Ohio (15-2, 4-1 MAC) at Bowling Green (8-10, 2-3 MAC)

Bowling Green is rated 76 OVR (76 off/76 def/78 sht/81 reb), well below us everywhere. Toledo was rated 74 OVR(the other team in this 2 game stretch we could have played), and we have played some good games with Bowling Green, so here we go.

Scouting

PG Richie Bracey – SR – 66 OVR – Their starter, Zam Surov, is injured and out for a month. Bracy is a poor defender, 78 defense. Decent speed/quickness(86/84), poor ball handler(74) and average passer(70, passing is harder to come by though). 86 close/71 med/74 3, definitely a reasonable scoring threat if given any space.. 6.9 ppg/2.9 apg.

SG Jean Goss – FR – 73 OVR – Goss will become a good player, but he still needs work. 86 speed/82 quickness, 79 defense, 90 close/71 med/70 3, 77 off the dribble. None of those but the close rating bother me now at all. Give him 3 years of development and he'll be quite good. 8.1 ppg so far this year.

SF Clinton Moye – JR – 78 OVR – Moye has started the last two years at SG as Bowling Green had a very good SF who just graduated. Average defense (79), above average shooter (87 close/77 med/73 3), good off the dribble and outstanding in traffic (78/88). Moye is a great athlete and a great dunker(91 dunk rating). 9.0 ppg, 2nd on the team.

PF Rich Draper – SR – 73 OVR - This is Draper's first year as a starter though he has seen enough minutes to earn 3 bars of experience. He's a natural SF but he is 6'7”. He doesn't have great PF skills though, he's a horrid rebounder(69 o/74 d) and totally ineffective on offense in the post(65). 74 post defense is reasonable, but not good. 84 close/78 in traffic. 7.7 ppg, 3rd on the team, nonetheless, but he is badly out of position.

C Jessan Dilligard – SR – 74 OVR – 6'10”, an average rebounder (79 o/81 d), a great post player (90 offense! 79 defense). 85 close/88 in traffic, guy looks like a serious scoring threat down low, and leads the team with 16.2 ppg/7 rpg.

The loss of Surov really hurts them. They go 7 deep as far as players rated above 60... before they lost Surov. Now they're in big trouble. Their next PG behind Bracey is a 50 rated true freshman who can't do anything really. Their starting lineup is solid, but we expect to wear them down. Additionally, their backcourt does not play good defense at all. We expect a big edge there.

58-46 unity edge, theirs isn't bad but we've got a solid, experienced lineup out there now.

We're not playing well at all. I switched from the custom playbook that I usually use to the “all plays” playbook for some variety(for both teams) and am getting a lot of plays I'm not familier with(the diagram on the floor is great of course but when I know a play by heart I can look for guys cutting in advance to see where my best move will be). But regardless, we're not rebounding well and not shooting well at all. Backups are in to hopefully change that.

Bowling Green scored 5 straight to go up 23-10 before we finally started playing better on defense. We rolled off 8 straight points, entirely in transition after missed shots/turnovers. We've been pretty even after that point. Our scoring has been balanced too, Lufkin, Mendoza and Keller all put up 4 I believe. Starters are back in to finish off the half.

HALF
34
47
Terrible half. Just terrible. We allow them to shoot 50%, including 4-11 from 3, Moye and Goss both hurt us (11/8 points respectively), their backup PG Bracey gets his shots too and scores 7. We've committed 8 fouls and they're 9-11 from the line.

They have a massive rebounding edge, 21-13. On our end we're 0-6 from 3. Sessoms has 6, Mendoza 6. Half the team has 4. I tried hard to get our big men going, Delic and Sessoms are a combined 4-13. Cooper is 1-5, House only has 2 shots so far. Gotta get something going from pretty much anywhere.
2
17:30
42
49
Well that's a good start, 8-2 run. Murphy scores our first 5 points, Delic gets a basket down low and then House a free throw. We've allowed a Moye jumper but that's it so far.
2
13:45
48
60
They push the lead back out to 12, and I am not seeing anything at all I can do different to score more consistently or play better defense. They're just getting good looks, good cuts, good drives from everyone. Backups are in.
2
9:00
58
67
We keep getting it under 10 and they just immediately push it back up over. Their center, Dilligard, is killing Keller, he has 6 points since the backups came in. Bad news too is that we're already at 7 fouls for the half, they're shooting the rest of the way.
2
8:30
60
69
Keller draws a foul on Moye, and its their 7th team foul too. It was on a 3 point play opportunity, the second Keller has had in the last two minutes. Yup, he missed both free throws.
2
8:00
60
71
Starters are back in. Its a bit early but the backups are gassed and we can't afford to stall for time here to rest anyone. I might sub them out once more at some point, or, I've got my timeouts.
2
6:00
70
76
Cooper finally hits a 3 pointer, which, after 4 straight points off turnovers, has us on a 7-0 run(yup, they'd gone up 13), and we're down only 6, our slimmest deficit of the half.
2
5:10
70
80
Backups are in for a short breather. And yup, we just gave up a quick 4 straight.
2
3:30
74
82
Starters are good to go the rest of the way. We scored 4 straight, a foul allows Dilligard to sink 2 Ft's and make it 8 again.
2
2:55
74
84
A steal and layup gives them a 10 point lead, Murphy gets a wide open 3 and can't sink it, and they have the ball up 10. This just hasn't felt like a winnable game all half and it already feels over.
2
1:00
83
89
5 straight by Cooper make it a 6 point game and at least give us a chance going into the final minute.

They score the next time they have the ball and its out of reach.

Bowling Green 96
Ohio 86

Just an incredibly frustrating game for us. We could not stop anything they threw at us. Moye hit tons of open jump shots, Bracey was lights out in absurd fashion, Dilligard was very effective down low. Bracey was 6-7 from the field for 16 points. Goss, their SG, 5-11 and 7-8 from the line for 18. Moye 7-13 for 19 points. PF Drafper 5-7 for 13. C Dilligard 5-10 for 15... if we can't play good enough defense to stop that, we can't win.

We were terrible. 13-20 from the FT line really hurt us. That 6 point game is a 3 point game if we make 80%, etc. They certainly did(28-33 for them... )

We're rated 90 on the boards, the highest in the MAC and way way higher than Bowling Green. They outrebounded us 39-26. We didn't get a single offensive rebound all game.

Murphy: 10 points (4-9 shooting)
Cooper: 14 points (5-14 shooting, 2-6 from 3)
House: 11 points (4-6 shooting, thank you)
Delic: 10 points/7 boards
Sessoms: 11 points

Mendoza: 11 points
Keller: 10 points

Just a poor game all the way around. I guess they were just up for us on the road big time and we didn't stand a chance.

Ball State (10-7, 4-2 MAC) at Ohio (15-3, 4-2 MAC)

Ball State looks good, 80 OVR (80 off/80 def/82 sht/81 reb). To compare after some development we are: 82 OVR (81 Off/81 def/83 sht/89 reb). Rebounding is still our big advantage in this league.

Scouting

PG Rod Rowe – JR – 71 OVR – 85 speed/84 quickness. Above average handling and passing (86/79). 83 defense, quite good, and 80 steals, outstanding. 84 close/82 med/67 3. 81 off the dribble/76 in traffic. Looks like a very dangerous player on both ends of the floor. 7.9 ppg, good for 2nd on the team.

SG Gary Edelin – SO – 80 OVR – Edelin is a JC transfer so this is his first year. He was a 4* guy and is outstanding. 87 speed/87 quickness, 82 defense, 86 steals(A-, very very good). 81 close/84 med/83 3. 83 off the dribble, an outstanding shooter and can create his own shot. There's really only one good thing here, and it may overtake all else. All his shot tendencies, even from 3, are very low. So it looks like he'll pass up the shot quite a bit. His stats seem to bear that out, as he only averages 5.5 ppg.

SF Fab Minoff – FR – 73 OVR - A very talented 6'8” freshman . 80 defense, good for a SF, a solie post defender. 83 close/80 med/63 3(thank goodness). 80 in traffic and a decent dunker. Solid athletic skills, B- vert/B- str, B- hustle. 7.1 ppg/5.1 rpg. Looks like a good, long, athletic wing player.

PF Herman Wheeler – SO – 69 OVR – Not terribly experienced, average/above average most everywhere on defense. 78/82 on the boards(off/def). 77 post offense/71 defense. Good hustle/vertical/strength so he loks like a pretty good athlete. Only a 76 close range shot/84 in traffic. He doesn't seem like a scoring threat. Not a shot blocker either. 7.5 ppg/6.9 rpg.

C Russell Kapono – JR – 77 OVR – 7 feet tall with some talent, very scary. 80 on the boards(both off and def), 89 post offense, 77 post defense. 91 in close/84 in traffic, and he's a good dunker. Strength is 90, average shot blocker... an absolute monster inside. 14.5 ppg so far this year, twice as many as anyone else on the team.

These guys go 9 deep with players rated 67 OVR or better. They have a defensive stopper at backup PG (84 defense), an athletic backup SF and decent depth everywhere. Kapono is my biggest worry. He is a huge threat to stop my driving offense and my post game. He looks like he will be hard to get into foul trouble as well.

Ball State likes to run a 3-2 offense, which we traditionally do well against. If we can shoot the 3 today we'll kill it. If we can't its going to depend on getting Kapono in some foul trouble inside I think. Home court advantage seems HUGE today.

58-44 unity edge.

Great start, we're getting inside well and scoring on the break with ease after a couple turnovers and long rebounds. Kapono came out after 3:30, I didn't check his stamina but maybe he just plays short stretches? I forget, its been 2 years since I've played these guys. Cooper with 8, we are 0-3 from 3, all wide open ones, but the fast break and our defense is great so far. Backups are in.

10:30

Timeout Ball State. They don't get back on defense well after a miss, they turn it over a lot, and their 3-2 defense is just riddled with holes. Kapono and Edelin are total non factors so far, though I of course expect that to change.
1
4:10
38
20
Lufkin missed 2 layups in a row and we let them cut the lead to 23-17 with about 8 minutes to go. All of a sudden, everyone just woke up. Keller with a couple cuts to the basket on the secondary break. Lufkin with 10 points or so, a 3 point play, a 3, a transition bucket. Lamkin and Mendoza with back to back 3s, and just stellar defense. The starters were ready 2 minutes ago but I wasn't about to stop the game on this streak. Starters are in now though.

A 3 point play and a 3 by house(albeit a last second on the shot clock 'well I guess he is the most open' 3 that bounced around twice before dropping) give us a 22 point lead!!

HALF
44
28
We go cold and allow the last 6 points of the half, but its just an outstanding performance all around. They're shooting 37%, and just 17% from 3 (2-14)Edelin is 1-4 with 4 points, Kapono is 2-7 for 4 points. We have 6 steals and 4 blocks, while only committing 4 turnovers ourselves.

Lufkin leads us with 9 points. Mendoza, Cooper, and House all have 8. Cooper is 0-3 from 3 but has gotten to the basket a few times. Murphy is 0-2 from 3, so we haven't had the 3 point shooting that makes it really easy to beat the 3-2 without worrying abuot their interior defense... but it just hasn't mattered at all yet.
2
16:30
48
38
They score the first 4 points of the 2nd half to make it a 10-0 run going back to the first half. We score a bit to offset that but their offense has really turned it on. Edelin has 4 already, Kapono has 4 and we're just not stopping them. A couple turnovers have not helped at all. We call a timeout.
2
15:30
51
38
1 for 2 at the line by House after drawing foul #2 on Kapono, then a monster windmill jam in transition, of course by House, and its Ball State's turn for a timeout.
2
12:30
55
45
We go up by as much as 15, but 5 straight by Ball State has it back down to 10. House was a beast during that stretch, scoring 7, he's up to 15 total. Backups are in.
2
12:00

Ugh. 3 pointer, we turn it over against their press, and they get a quick 2. Our lead has disappeared. Timeout.
2
10:10
62
52
We each score two quick points to make it 57-52, then we get a nice, long possession where we get 2 offensive rebounds and draw two fouls, just extending our time with the ball for well over a minute. Finally we get Mendoza a great look for 3 which he drains. Their PG falls over and loses the ball against the press on the way up the court, Mendoza scoops it up and scores for our own 5-0 run to push it back out to 10.
2
9:30
65
54
We give up a bucket but find Mendoza on the other end for another 3, timeout Ball State, we're back up 11.
2
7:45
68
60
Mendoza with 3 3's and he has our last 11 points in a row. Unfortunately, we're not stopping them at all and with one miss they've got the lead back down to 8. Timeout Ohio as we get stuck in the backcourt.
2
6:30
73
62
After Ball State cuts the lead to 6, we get 5 straight from Keller(3 point play/foul for 2 more Fts) to go back up 11 again. Starters come back in to try to finish this game off.
2
3:55
75
70
We get a couple wide open 3's for Murphy and Cooper, neither can find their stroke. Ball State scores each time we miss, and then we turn it over on two straight possessions and its an 8-2 run all of a sudden, 5 point game. Timeout Ohio.
2
2:00
82
74
Murphy finally makes a 3, one at the end of the shot clock, to put us up 8 with about 2:15 left. Edelin misses a 3 on their end and we rebound. Time to run that clock down.
2
1:15
82
75
We burn 25 seconds off the clock but miss, they get a good look inside and Murphy fouls Minoff. He only makes 1 of 2 at the line, our ball up 7.

House hits a 15 footer to make it a 9 point game with under a minute to go. That'll do it.

Ohio 84
Ball State 75

Solid game, we ran out to a big lead in the 1st half and successfully withstood run after run by their talented starting 5. Edelin ended up with 16 points, 12 in the second half, and Kapono with 16 points/8 boards. Minoff was their only other double digit scorer with 13. I think this is the only meeting we have with Ball State this year. I hope so, I don't want a return trip to their house.

Murphy: 7 points/4 assists
Cooper: 14 points
House: 17 points/4 boards
Delic: 4 points/6 boards
Sessoms: 0 points

Mendoza: 19 points
Lufkin: 9 points
Keller: 9 points

great win over the 2nd best team in the league(in theory at least anyway).

Our next game is vs Northern Illinois, the 3rd best team in the conference, rated 79 OVR. I really like the dynamic of playing every other game, so unless I *really* want to play a return trip to a team late in the season I'm going to stick with that. Simming every other game puts more importance on my ability to build a team which I'm all for.

Feb 1, 2014:

Northern Illinois 81
at Ohio 79

disappointing, our 2nd 2 point home loss in simmed contests, and we're now 3-3 in our last 6 games after opening conference play 2-0.

House has a great game, 21 points. Sessoms with 16, Delic with 8, Lufkin with 9 off the bench.

Next up, February 5th:

at Western Michigan 74
Ohio 64

ergh! 10 from cooper, 9 from House, 8 for Delic and Murphy both. 8 from Watson/7 from Lamkin off the bench.

0-2 in simmed games, knocking us down to 5-4 in conference play.

MAC Standings

1. Bowling Green 6-3
2. E. michigan 6-3
3. N Illinois 6-3
4. Ohio 5-4
5. Ball State 5-4
6. Kent State 4-5
7. W. michigan 4-5
8. Akron 4-5
9. Miami OH 4-5
10. C. Michigan 4-5
11. Buffalo 4-5
12. Toledo 2-7

That's the craziest thing I've seen in awhile. The road losses(simmed and played) to Bowling Green and Western Michigan i understand. The two 2 point home losses to Akron and Northern Illinois are bad losses. This team shouldn't be losing at home to anyone.

Our next game is at Miami OH, at home.

Miami OH (9-11, 4-5 MAC) at Ohio (15-3, 4-2 MAC)

Miami was rated 76 OVR, which is why I simmed the Western michigan game that we just lost... Miami OH was better. But, they just lost their starting SG, rated 78 OVR, for a month. They are no longer rated 76 OVR.

72 OVR (72 off/72 def/75 sht/79 reb). Their backup SG is rated 53 OVR. We're going to kill them.

Scouting

PG Edmund Kennedy – JR – 68 OVR – 5'11”, below average speed(83/83 quickness), soild ball handler/passer(C+ at both, 84/77). Terrible defense for a PG(78), but a decent steals guy (79, B- rating). 81 close/79 med/73 3, another guy who is a much bigger offensive threat. 81 off the dribble, he can create his own shot most likely. 8.1 ppg/4.3 apg.

SG Justino Fontenet – FR – 53 OVR – 82 defense, actually quite good there. 73 close/58 med/65 3. terrible speed, terrible ball handling. 1.5 ppg.

SF Roosevelt Hess – SO – 68 OVR – 6'7” natural SF. 83 close/75 med/70 from 3, entirely an offensive threat. 75 off the dribble/82 in traffic, both decent but not great numbers. Not strong at all(58), decent vertical/hustle. He's an awful defender(74) and is slow. If they go man to man House should destroy him. 8.4 ppg.

PF Cristano Blalock – SR – 73 OVR – 6'10”, average in the post (70/72 off/def), above average on the boards (80/81). 84 close/86 in traffic. Good strength (72) for a PF, a good shot blocker(74). Averaging 9.1 ppg/5.8 rpg. Likely their biggest threat now with their SG hurt.

C Rylan Gabler – SO – 71 OVR – 6'11”, 85 post offense/89 close/83 in traffic, 77 strength which is good for a B+ rating, looks like a solid offensive threat. 80 blocked shot rating, 76 post defense is pretty good too. 75/77 on the boards off/def, a weak spot for sure. 9.6 ppg/3.5 rpg.

This looks like a very poor defensive team, especially out on the perimeter. That should be a very good sign for us.

We go 5/11 from 3, shoot 57%, outrebound them 21-11, and hold them to 40% shooting.

I assume they're not coming back from that and sim to the end of the game.

Ohio 91
Miami OH 58

Murphy: 12 points
Cooper: 19 points/5 assists
House: 2 points/4 boards/3 assists/3 steals
Delic: 16 points
Sessoms: 6 points/7 boards

Mendoza: 9 points
Lufkin: 16 points/5 boards

Our next two are against teams with the same rating, I decide to play the one against the team with the better record though.

February 12:

Ohio 91
at Central Michigan 60

That's more like it, mr sim engine. Cooper with 20, Delic 15 and 10 boards, Sessoms 12, House 10, Lufkin 13 off the bench.

With that win, we've got 5 more conference games left to go. We're due to play 3 and sim 2.

MAC Standings

1. N Illinois 8-3
2. E. Michigan 7-4
3. Ohio 7-4
4. Ball State 6-5
5. Akron 6-5
6. Bowling Green 6-5
7. Kent State 5-6
8. Buffalo 5-6
9. Miami OH 4-7
10. C. Michigan 4-7
11. Toledo 4-7
12. W. Michigan 4-7

our next game is at home vs Eastern Michigan, the team we're currently tied for 2nd in conference play with.

Our final 5 games:

vs E. Michigan (7-4)
at Kent State (5-6)
at Akron (6-5)
vs Toledo (4-7)
at Buffalo (5-6)

We will almost certainly play Eastern Michigan, Akron, and Buffalo and sim the other two. If we do not finish at least 4-1 vs these 5 I will be pretty upset. Eastern Michigan is the only team that should even be able to threaten us, and that one is at home.

Eastern Michigan(11-12, 7-4 MAC) at Ohio (18-5, 7-4 MAC)

Huge game, the battle for 2nd place in the MAC. Eastern Michigan is rated 78 OVR (77 off/76 def/79 sht/80 REB), and we would appear to have the edge in every facet of the game.

We should do fine, we crushed them by 30 on the road in our first conference game of the year.

Scouting

PG WB McCoy – JR - 73 OVR – Looks like their best 3 point shooter(76), and their best defender by far(86, quite good actually). Great speed but not a good ball handler for a PG. 12.0 ppg/4.7 apg.

SG Haris Taft – JR – 72 OVR – Did not start last year. Great speed and quickness (90/88), decent shooter (86 close/77 med/71 3), but he's a poor defender (76), a poor leaper and doesn't hustle... he can shoot off the dribble(82). I'm not quite sure how to factor the speed vs defense vs hustle and such, but I'm hoping that a good handles guy like Cooper can burn him when we have the ball. 7.7 ppg.

SF Freddie Stehly – JR – 75 OVR – average/below average defense(74), not very fast, 86 in close, 75/72 from med and 3 point ranges. Looks like a pretty good leaper and dunker. He scored 10 ppg last year and has elevated his game quite a bit it appears, 15 ppg/5.7 rpg so far.

PF Kentrell Warner – FR – 68 OVR – 6'9”, average on the boards(80/76), average in the paint (73 o/71 d). 81close/81 in traffic. He's got no experience and probably won't be a big threat to us. 4 ppg.

C Dameon Archibong – FR – 67 OVR – Poor rebounder (73 o/76 d), average at best in the post (76 o/73 d), not a shot blocker at all, 82 close/80 in traffic. He's quite average. 5.3 ppg/5.3 rpg so far this year. 6'10”

As they've done so many times this year, the backups give us a huge lift. 3 from Mendoza, drives to the hoop by Lamkin and Lufkin and we've got the lead.

We scored a bucket, then they go on a 7-0 run to take a 32-27 lead. PG McCoy has 3 3's and 9 points for them. Murphy just hit a 3 to cut the lead down to 2.

HALF

41
They score the last 6 after we had tied it at 35. We're 6/11 at the line, 3/10 from 3 and just 43% from the field while allowing them to shoot over 50%. McCoy has 9, both their big men have 6 each, and Stehly, their SF that IIRC was the only guy to hurt us during the first matchup, has 6.

Cooper has 7, House 6, but they're 3/8 and 2/6 respectively, not good. 3 others have 5.

Our backups finish things off with two inside baskets by Keller. They kept getting steals and blocked shots on defense and every single one triggered or re-ignited the 6th man boost, so I just kept the backups out there. A foul by Lamkin stops the game and the starters are on the way back in.

They cut it down to 3 and have a chance to cut it to 1, but miss the shot and we get 2 for House on the other end to push the lead back to 5, nearing the 3 minute mark.
2

77
69
After each team scores, we get a steal with our press, and Murphy ends up with a 3 pointer to give us an 8 point lead with 1:45 to go.

We force a miss and run out the clock.

Ohio 79
Eastern Michigan 71

Stehly ended up leading them with 14 points, PF Warner 12 and McCoy 11. They didn't make a single 3 in the second half I don't think, and finished the game under 50% from the field.

We end up at exactly 50%, and shoot much better from 3 in the second half (4-7, compared to 3-10 in the first).

Murphy: 11 points/2 assists
Cooper: 13 points
House: 10 points/4 boards
Delic: 3 points/4 boards
Sessoms: 7 points/6 boards

Mendoza: 8 points
Lamkin: 8 points
Keller: 8 points
Lufkin: 7 points
Watson: 4 points

The backups were so much more efficient today. Backups shoot 15-21 from the floor, and 4-6 from 3. That leaves the starters going 16-41, an amazing difference.

We're back up to 6th in the mid-major poll. If I hadn't mentioned it before, we'd fallen as far as 9th.

UL Lafayette is 24-0, ranked #3 in the media poll with a top 15 RPI. They clearly lead the mid-major poll still. Nevada is 22-4 and ranked as well.

Our next game is a simmed road contest at Kent State, they're rated 72 OVR and we expect to win.

February 19th:

Ohio 68
at Kent State 55

Delic leads us with 17 points/10 boards, House 11, Cooper 10.

That is our 20th win of the season! Its also our only game of the week.

We remain 6th in the mid major poll going into the next week.

MAC Standings

1. N. Illinois (9-4)
2. Ohio (9-4)
3. Ball State (14-10)
4. Akron (7-6)
5. E. Michigan (7-6)
6. W. Michigan (6-7)
7. Kent State (6-7)
8. Toledo (6-7)
9. Bowling Green (6-7)
10. Buffalo (5-8)
11. C. Michigan (5-8)
12. Miami OH (4-9)

We're the only team with any overall record to speak of out of the group. Ball State is 14-10, Kent State 13-10, Akron 14-11, N. Illionis 14-13. Everyone else has a losing record.

Our RPI is 54th in the nation. We haven't played a single top 100 team this year.

I guess it is possible that we could win the rest of our conference games, and lose in the MAC final and have an outside shot at an at-large bid. We'd be 25-6 if that happened, but the loss would probably drop us further than the 5 wins would raise us up, I fully expect to have to win the conference to go dancing.

We are listed on the bubble watch, I don't know if this is in order or not, but we're in the bottom 3rd of the list along with many of the other top 10 mid-majors. VCU, Alabama A&M and Gonzaga are all on the list with us along with a number of major programs with RPI's in the 40s.

Ohio (20-5, 9-4 MAC) at Akron (14-11, 7-6 MAC)

We suffered a very unexpected loss at the hands of Akron at home earlier in the year. They are rated 70 OVR currently (70 off/70 def/71 sht/78 reb). I say currently because I'm 90% sure they were rated higher earlier.

WOW. Akron is decimated. 7'2” starting center – Out, 68 rated SG – out, 66 rated SG – out.

Scouting

PG Toby Warner – FR – 73 OVR – A very solid looking freshman, will be one of the best players in the league later if he develops well. 94 speed/87 quickness, 82 defense, 82 close/73 med/75 3, 80 off the dribble. 82 handling/84 passing, that's one of the higher passing ratings I've seen. Warner will be a beast if his primary ratings develop enough to get him upwards of 77-78 OVR as a senior. 6.9 ppg as a freshman.

SG Darien Guinn – JR – 69 OVR – Solid defense 84, average shooter, 81 close/66 med/70 3. 82 off the dribble, A- and outstanding. A natural PG. Only 4.8 ppg this year.

SF Damond Boone – SO – 57 OVR – Bad, like you'd expect someone rated 57 OVR to be. Also a natural SG, but not any quicker than House.

PF Bryan Delgado – SR - 56 OVR – A natural SF, 6'6, rebound and post numbers in the mid 60s. Awful.

C Lanny Gordon – JR – 69 OVR – 6'9” but he's also a natural SF, which means his post numbers are going to trend way lower. Nothing above 70 in the post or on the boards.

Sucks to have this kind of injury troubles. I'm going to go get revenge for their victory against us earlier this year just the same.

That's better. We score the last 15 of the half and take the big lead we expected. Wendell House took over the game in the final 5 mintues.

House has 12 at the half, Murphy 10, Cooper 8, Lamkin 9. We're shooting an outstanding 24-35, and holding Akron to 11-32 from the field

We build our lead up to 30 with 14 minutes to go and sim it the rest of the way.

Cooper: 8 points
House: 24 points
Delic: 12 points/14 boards
Sessoms: 9 points/5 boards

Lamkin: 15 points

House was huge today, just too fast and too strong and too athletic for anyone they would put on him.

The in-season recruiting period ends. I have two guys at 100%, one is a JC SF that I expect to land right away when offeseason recruiting opens, but one of them is a backup target without an offer. My other two scholarship targets are in the 90% range and I have the lead on them both. I have backups targets that are reasonable shots for me to land as well. More details on that, of course, when recruiting starts back up. For now, i've secured a 6'10" PF and have 3 open scholarships and feel reasonably good about my chances to pull in a solid class, but things are up in the air for sure still.

UL Lafayette is 27-0 now and #2 in the nation behind Louisville. Their RPI is 9th overall. Their conference is horrible but they did play two top 15 opponents, hosting Maryland and travelling to Indiana, winning both of those games for quality victories.

Despite the win, we fall to #7 in the mid-major poll. Gonzaga looks to have picked up two top 100 wins last week and jumped up above us.

March 4th, our last simmed game of the season, vs a middle of the MAC Toledo squad that we beat by 19 in a simmed game on the road earlier in theyear.

March 4:

at Ohio 80
Toledo 77

A close win, and a key win. Sessoms is the big scorer today with 20 points and 5 boards. Delic with 12 points/8 boards, House 11, Keller 10 as our inside game is strong.

Going into our last game, on the road at Buffalo, we remain tied for 1st in the conference. Northern Illinos and I are both 11-4. I still don't understand tiebreakers here, but we are listed as 1st so i assume if we win we get the 1 seed.

This doesn't help us understand anything about the conference tournament matchups yet at all. Going into the final game, 2 teams are 8-7 in conference play, tied for 3rd. 6 teams are 7-8, tied for 5th. Buffalo is 6-9 and 11th.

Ohio (22-5, 11-4 MAC) at Buffalo (11-16, 6-9 MAC)

This should in theory be an easy win to finish the season. But Buffalo has 4 starters rated over 70 and can play some ball, so we cannot take them lightly. 77 OVR (77 off/76 def/79 sht/78 reb).

We played out the game at home vs Buffalo earlier in the year. We ran out to a 17 point halftime lead, which they slowly erased over the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half, but we finally got our act together in the final 8 minutes or so and ended up with a 9 point victory.

Their PG Clement scored 25 on us, and PF Falls scored 18. I even made a note in the first game that I want to put Cooper, my best defender, on Clement this time around and have Murphy guard their SG.

Scouting

PG Clark Clement – JR – 71 OVR – 90 speed but 74 quickness. Very good passer, good defender (84). 84 close/68 med/73 3, not great but he'll make shots if open. 9.5 ppg as the only upperclassman on the team.

SG Derwin Sherrod – FR – 69 OVR – Average everywhere. 82 close/71 med/71 3, just 76 off the dribble, don't leave him open but he isn't going to kill me. 80 defense is average, maybe a bit above, but Cooper should do fine anyway. 85 speed/74 quickness, so not a threat b/c of speed. Poor hustle. He is 6'5” but cooper is a nice sized SG too(6'4”) so that shouldn't matter either.

SF Ronnie Burleson – SO – 75 OVR – this is Burleson's first year in the starting lineup. He's decent all the way around, he's good in traffic for a SF, 85(B-), 83 close/76 med/70 3, so not a guy we can just ignore, but not a huge threat either. Average defense(78), decent steals/shot blocking, nothing really stands out though. 8.4 ppg/5.6 rpg.

PF Elton Falls – SO – 77 OVR – 6'8”, started at Center last year but is better at PF. Average on the boards (79 o/77 d), great in the post (83 o/86 d), and a solid scorer. 89 close/86 in traffic, can step out and shoot too, 75 med/70 3. He's a good leaper and is strong for a PF(77 str/B+). 14.7 ppg this year, a solid scoring option.

C JJ Arnold – FR – 71 OVR – badly undersized, 6'6” 228 lbs. Average rebounder (75 o/81 d). Good post offense (82) but horrific post defense(66). 83 close/76 in traffic. He'll be pretty good eventually if he gets moved to PF but he's going to get eaten alive here. 6.5 ppg/5.7 rpg.

Buffalo has no injury worries.

We've been down by 18 a number of times, it hasn't gotten to 20 yet, and now it sits at 17 after a 3 point play on a foul by Sessoms. We drew foul #2 on their PF Falls and have had some luck scoring inside since that happened, but we just can't seem to stop them.

HALF
43
63
A fitting end to the half, Clement hits a 3 as Cooper is standing in his face jumping right up in time with him. Just unstoppable. We haven't had a clusterfuck/disaster of a half like this all season. PG Clement has 9, 1 from 3. SG Sherrod is 4-4 from 3 and has 14 points. SF Burleson is 2-3 from 3 and 5-7 overall for 15 points. As a team they are 9-13 from 3. We've also committed 8 fouls and they are 12-15 from the line. Just a perfect half by Buffalo. They play a pressing, tight pressure defense and they have stepped into a number of passes that I thought were perfectly easy feeds. They have 7 steals. I've only forced 2 turnovers.

On our end House is our best option so far with 10 points. Cooper has 9, Delic 6. Lufkin had 7 off the bench and Lamkin 5. We are shooting well, 17-31 from the field and 7-8 from the line. But we're 2-7 from 3, they have 7 more 3's than us and 5 more free throws made. That's a 12 point difference that we have to find a way to stop.

We know we can score in bunches. So we're not giving up yet.

Buffalo 114
Ohio 84

We have not had a game like this where we have just been completely dominated in a long time. This was a team playing their last home game of the year desparate for a win I guess. They got 19 from Clement, 19 from Sherrod, 24 from Burleson and 14 from Falls. They were 17-25 from 3, and 21-27 from the line. That is unbeatable.

Murphy: 6 points/6 assists
Cooper: 15 points
House: 19 points
Delic: 14 points/5 boards
Sessoms: 5 points

Lufkin: 11 points
Lamkin: 7 points

If I'd played the game all the way out and continued to push to try to come back, House would have scored 30+. He was my only effective offensive weapon.

We finish the regular season 22-6, an outstanding record. We're 11-5 in conference play, a record I thought should have been better given our talent level, but as that Buffalo game proves... shit happens.

Final regular season mid-major poll:

1. UL Lafayette (29-0)
2. Nevada
3. Davidson
4. Gonzaga
5. Alabama A&M
6. Portland
7. VCU
8. Ohio
9. Drexel
10. Fresno State

With that loss our RPI is 60th. We are no longer on the bubble watch sheet.

Final MAC Standings

1. N Illiois 12-4 (17-13)
2. Ohio 11-5 (22-6)
3. E. Michigan 9-7 (13-15)
4. Ball State 8-8 (14-13)
5. Toledo 8-8 (14-14)
6. Bowling Green 8-8 (14-15)
7. Kent State 7-9 (14-12)
8. Akron 7-9 (14-14)
9. C. Michigan 7-9 (13-15)
10. W Michigan 7-9 (13-16)
11. Buffalo 7-9 (12-16)
12. Miami OH 5-11 (10-17)

MAC First Round

8. Akron 58
9. Central Michigan 55

5. Toledo 87
12. Miami OH 57

6. Bowling Green 84
11. Buffalo 83

7. Kent State 66
10. Western Michigan 60

We really dodge a bullet here with the giant tiebreaker going on. Bowling Green and Buffalo are the two teams we struggled with in games I played out. Both of them could have been the 7 or 10 seed and thus in line for a date with Ohio in the quarterfinals... but the tiebreaker made them 6 and 11 and put them another round away from me.

MAC Quarterfinals

1. Northern Illinois
8. Akron

4. Ball State
5. Toledo

3. Eastern Michigan
6. Bowling Green

2. Ohio
7. Kent State

one of the best matchups we could get I think.

March 13, 2014 – MAC Quarterfinals

Ohio (22-6, 11-5 MAC) vs Kent State (15-12, 7-9 MAC)

Kent State graduated 4 seniors last year and didn't have enough depth to be anywhere close to the same team. They are rated 72 OVR(74 off/73 def/78 sht/81 reb). We beat them twice in simmed games this year.

Their best player, 76 OVR SF Logan Montgomery is hurt. He's a good shooter and his absence is really hurting their lineup, as they're starting a PF out of position at SF who has no skills at all to play out of the post.

Scouting

PG R. Parsons – FR – 66 OVR – 84 speed but only 77 quickness. Outstanding defender(86), not a steals guy so that's good. 76 close/72 med/70 3, not great but can't leave him open. 80 off the dribble. 7.9 ppg. Average ball handler/passer for a PG.

SG Theodore Holland – FR – 70 OVR – A 3 point shooting specialist, rated 83 from behind the arc. He doesn't look to do much else. 79 defense and only 81 speed. 80 hustle is very good for what that's worth. 8.1 ppg this year.

SF Larry Schifino – SR – 67 OVR – A natural PF, 6'8”, incredibly slow(70), derrible on ball defense(62). 88 close/62 med/61 3. Really an awful SF. 4.6 ppg.

PF Herman Bro – SO – 71 OVR – 6'9”, poor rebounder (75 o/71 d). Average on the blocks (73 post offense/72 post defense). 90 close range but only 78 in traffic. 8.5 ppg this year.

C Roburt Maye – FR – 66 OVR – 7'1”, a good defensive rebounder(82) but terrible on the offensive glass(69). 66 post offense/74 post d. 82 close/81 in traffic. He's got some strength, but not a huge threat other than his size it would seem. 7.9 ppg/5.5 rpg.

March 14, 2014 – MAC Semifinals

Ohio (23-6, 11-5 MAC) vs Eastern Michigan (14-15, 9-7 MAC)

Eastern Michigan is rated 78 OVR (77 off/76 def/79 sht/80 REB), and we would appear to have the edge in every facet of the game. They're the 3 seed in the tournament.

Injuries are hurting EMU. Their starting center, Dameon Archibong is out. He's a freshman with just moderate talent, but he is 6'10” and filled up the lane for them. Also, their backup SG Woody Karis is out. A 71 rated freshman, he's a solid backup who scored a bit for them.

I'm thinking that even simming half my games, I probably need to turn up injuries a bit more.

PF Keith Buchanan – SR – 67 OVR – 6'9”, a very poor rebounder (74 o/67 d), average/slightly below in the post (69 o/72 d). 87 close/80 in traffic. He's also got a 3 point shot, 73 from 3. Averaging 4.3 ppg. Not a bad backup, he's starting in place of Archibong. Hurts their depth though.

C Kentrell Warner – FR – 68 OVR – 6'9”, average on the boards(80/76), average in the paint (73 o/71 d). 81close/81 in traffic. He's got no experience and probably won't be a big threat to us. 4 ppg.

Just a terrible start. We have a 3 from Murphy and a couple buckets inside. We've got 3 fouls, 2 of them leading to 3 point plays for them. Their SG Taft has 6 already. They've got 3 steals all leading to fast break buckets. I get a timeout to settle things down.

We get it down under 10 thanks to 5 straight from Keller. Lufkin got a 3 point play and we got a couple fast break layups as well. They are still hitting 3's though despite our tight man defense. Starters are back in to try to shut things down a little.

A couple bad defensive possessions let them go back up 6. House took over the game completely in the final 6 minutes, scoring 12 of his 14 points. EMU's PG, McCoy, leads them with 11. Murphy and Delic both have 6. Cooper has 0 and only took 3 shots, that has to change.

Well after allowing McCoy to score the first 5 points of the half, House gets us going again and we only trail by 6 with 17 left after having fallen down by 11. We actually get a 6th man boost going for cutting the lead back down.

Cooper gets a steal on a pass into the paint. He gets it ahead up to Murphy who can either pass it to House on the wing or try to make a move on his man to get to the hoop. 9 times out of 10 he drives to the basket, but today, there is no question what to do with the ball. They make both their free throws when we foul We get the open look that we want, but Murphy misses the 3 pointer with a couple seconds left on the clock.

Eastern Michigan 91
Ohio 88

Just a stunning disappointment here. We beat them by 30 early in the year, struggled like hell to beat them by 7 later in the year, and the 3rd time they finally got us, leading almost the entire way.

If we had anyone but House playing up to their level today we win going away. But we just had no other offense. EMU gets an outstanding game from McCoy, their star PG. He scores 21, has 9 assists and 3 steals. SG Taft with 16 and backup SF Summers with 14. They were only 8-22 from 3 but they hit big shots when they had to.

Murphy: 6 points (2-7 shooting/1-6 from 3)
Cooper: 2 points (1-8 shooting/0-4 from 3)
House: 29 points/6 boards (14-18 from the floor, 10 or 11 dunks)
Delic: 9 points/6 boards
Sessoms: 8 points/5 boards

Keller: 12 points – solid game from Keller as Sessoms only got 21 minutes due to foul trouble.
Lufkin: 6 points
Watson: 6 points

Just give me 8 from Cooper and we win. 2 points? Damn.

8. Akron 74

3. Eastern Michigan 91
2. Ohio 88

MAC Finals

5. Toledo 70
3. E. Michigan 49

So Toledo comes through to win the conference. We are #60 in the final RPI of the year, but we are not on the bubble watch. I assume that means we are firmly out.

Toledo is the 15 seed in the South. They get to get crushed by Duke in the first round.

NIT Bid

Well, its a sign of how good a season we had that we do get to play in the NIT. We look to be a 4 seed and will play Notre Dame in the first round. The NIT is to see who the #66 team is in the nation. We didn't earn our way into the important tournament and have no desire to waste our time in the minors.

NIT First Round

Notre Dame 75
at Ohio 65

Lufkin leads us with 12 points. Sessoms with 11, Cooper 10. Delic scores 7 in his last game for Ohio.

1 Seeds

East: UL Lafayette
South: Texas
Midwest: Florida
West: Baylor

UL Lafayette finished the year 30-0. Baylor is almost as big a surprise.

Final Four

Midwest: (1) UL Lafayette beats 3 seed Indiana and makes the final four!
West: (4) Kansas crushes Baylor by 40, then beats 10 seed Texas Tech to make the final four. Its a big 12 world apparently in the West region.
South: (2) Arizona beats 1 seed Texas 103-92.
Midwest: (5) Wisconsin beats 1 seed Florida, then 2 seed Duke to make the final four.

4 seed Kansas beats 1 seed UL Lafayette 105-89.
5 seed Wisconsin beats 2 seed Arizona 86-68.

4 seed Kansas beats 5 seed Wisconsin 72-61 to win the national championship.

Graduating Seniors

PF Daryl Delic - 6'7" 226 lbs - 81 OVR

I never did quite figure out how to really use this guy, whether it be the height factor in played games or just me sucking in the post. Make him 6'10" and I bet I get 20 a game out of him. Still, by his senior season Delic was putting up 12 points/game.

Delic started part of his freshman year and all of his final 3 years. He started 105 of his 125 games.

He ended up a 45% FG shooter for his career and a 67% shooter from the line. Career averages of 9.9 points/6.0 rebounds a game.

Delic had already been recruited when I arrived at Ohio, but he was technically part of my first class.

PF Eni Danelius - 6'8 221 lbs - 76 OVR

Danelius was a transfer player from Utah. I only had him 2 years, and he ended up getting benched for younger players who were taller and needed their time on the court his senior year.

As a result, he ends his career with a 4.6 ppg average, 2.8 rebounds. He's a 49% FG shooter and 62% at the line.

C Kenan Sessoms - 7'0" 268 lbs - 73 OVR

A walkon who used his size to earn more minutes every year. Sessoms started as a senior and scored 8.8 ppg and pulled in 5.3 rebounds. He played 123 games for Ohio, starting 41 of them.

62% from the FT line and 43% from the field for his career,Sessoms was never a great scorer, but he had some games where he got hot. He had a career high 23 points in one game. 6.2 ppg/4.9 rpg for his career averages.

PG Dee Flowers - 5'9" 161 lbs - 67 OVR

Flowers was a last minute JC recruit to deal with some serious depth problems at PG. He was a backup as a junior and relegated to the bench as a senior behind two above average PG recruits.

Flowers had a 3.3 ppg/1.5 assists per game average over 2 seasons. He appeared in 55 games, starting none of them. He shot 41% from the field, 35% from 3, and 59% from the line for his career.

We'll miss Delic and Sessoms to be sure. Losing 3 big men in one year always hurts.

2013/2014 Ohio Team Stats

Just a heartbreaking finish for this team. Towards the end of the year when we were leading the conference with a few games to go, we were being projected as a 12 seed. This is a team that really could have been hell to play against and in great shape to pull a 12/5 upset.

More balanced scoring this year, with House/Delic/Cooper the clear team leaders. We're only losing 2 of our top 10 players which is a good thing. And, next year I think we're going to be really good again with Watson and Keller inside. Keller isn't as big or strong as Sessoms, but he is more athletic and seems a better scorer. A lot will depend on how our recruits come in to see how strong our 10 man rotation will be. Ratings wise, Delic is irreplacable. Watson is a damn good rebounder though and we're going to be solid.

A note on House and Lufkin: When I play out my games, I almost never take a shot with either of them unless they're driving to the basket. They do a lot of driving and dishing, and only take jumpers when the shot clock is running down. Thus, they have very high shooting percentages.

This isn't for any sort of advancement or anything, but I failed to point out that I earned my 100th win early in the season. I am now 118-94 in 7 seasons. Ohio finished the year 23-8, my second 20 win season and my second season going to a postseason tournament... though this was the NIT.

3 major conference jobs are open this year: Maryland, Iowa State, and South Carolina. We're not good enough for these jobs quite yet.

Saint Louis in the A-10, a 'large' conference, is also open. We're not ready for this one either.

After that are a number of mid-major jobs. It looks like we're the top choice for every mid-major job in the country, including at schools in the top mid-majors every year, the CAA and Horizon league. Of course, with a good team here we don't intend to jump to another mid-major.

Gonzaga's coach goes to Maryland

Portland's coach goes to Iowa State

Tommy Amaker of VCU is now the head coach at South Carolina.

We are not the top choice for Gonzaga, they hire davidson's coach. VCU, another top mid-major, hires Boston University's head coach. we're not on this list either. Portland, another top 25 mid-major, has us 4th on their list, but go with ETSU's head coach.

Davidson is intriguing, but ultimately a step in the wrong direction. They are in a small conference, but were a top 10 team going 27-3. But that's only good for the #76 RPI when you play in a conference as poor as the Southern Conference.

I would have gone to Gonzaga if offered most likely, and to VCU. But nowhere else that wasn't a jump up.

Looking back up, that was Gary Williams retiring at Maryland and Rick Majerus retiring at Saint Louis.

I have access to a bunch of C+ coaches still, nothing better than that. As such I have a large number of sidegrades available.

I stick with what I've got, which is(for future reference):

Sandy Boylan:

Offense: B+
Defense: D

Scouting: D
Charisma: C

Denver Francis:

The three of us gel well together with the exception of discipline. We can offer none.

We don't lose or gain anyone.

Junior SG TJ Blackshear leaves Iowa for Boston University. He is by far the best transfer player, rated 78 OVR.

No MAC teams are involved in transfers in any way.

Offseason Recruiting

First, a review of where we're at:

We have landed a solid looking 6'10" PF, ranked #292 in the nation.

we have 3 scholarship offers out:

3* SF Dwight Snowden - JC FR - Snowden is at 100%. He has an offer from Jacksonville State as well but we fully expect to land him. He looks like a very average player. Athletic and a good dunker but not a shooter or defender really.

3* SG Erkan Northcutt - #292 overall out of Cleveland. We have him at 95%. He looks like another average shooter who is a fairly good athlete and defender. He would like to go to a big school and has aspirations of playing at Kentucky or Wake Forest. Assuming they do not make him an offer in week 1, he will almost certainly come to Ohio.

4* PF Lloyd Bright - Ranked #94 overall, #13 among PF's out of Erie, PA. He doesn't care about playing at a big school and that seems a good thing as so far none care about him. He looks like a solid rebounder. He's only 6'7". I have no idea what to expect here. We have him at 90% but its taken everything we have to get him there. But other than Stony brook, who hasn't made him an offer, no one else appears on his list. I keep expecting to lose Bright early.

If we could get these guys it'd be an ideal class. We seem to have a shot, but something could go wrong with all of them... Backup targets are in the mix.

First Day

Our top PF backup target signs elsewhere. This was totally expected and a foregone conclusion when we decided to continue to pursue our 4* PF instead of offering the backup a scholarship.

JC SF Dwight Snowden signs with Ohio!! He'll come in a sophomore and have 3 years. With House a senior and Lufkin behind him I might see if I can get a redshirt year in. Depends on the rest of the squad of course.

Week 1

SG Erkan Northcutt signs with OHIO. Northcutt is the guy that I said above wanted to play at Wake or Kentucky. They never came calling and we've got him!

Our 4* target is at 99% and presumably we land him this week. he has no other interest or offers. I have to wonder if he's just completely broken.

Week 2

4* PF Lloyd Bright signs with OHIO. Well we got our ideal result here. I am pretty stunned that all 3 of those guys came through perfectly for me. Only Bright is a highly valued recruit, but still, the other 3 were our top targets, hopefully all solid players, maybe we get someone that booms a bit for us.

I spend the rest of my time working on juniors. I have two junior guards that i have up around 88/89%, both 3* guys. And i add a few that have moderate interest already, a couple that look like they might end up Mr Basketball in Ohio next year, hoping to get a little bit of a head start.

Before flipping to the next season I look through the signings page to see how the rest of the conference did:

Akron: 3* JC, 2*
Ball State: 2*
Bowling Green: 3* JC, 2*
Buffalo: 5 2* guys, only two of them ranked in the top 800
C. Michigan: 4 2* guys, none ranked.
E. Michigain: 3* JC, 3* PF ranked 434, 3 2* guys
Kent State: 3* SG (ranked #293), 3* PF (ranked #401), 2*
Miami OH: 4* JC PF, 3* C (#395), 3* PF (#410)
N. Illinois: 3 2* guys

Western Michigan brings in one guy ranked #210 overall.

So miami OH, Kent State and perhaps Western michigan are the only teams recruiting anywhere near the level that I am at Ohio.

2014/15 Scheduling

I make the schedule a bit tougher this year. We'll open up at Providence, a weaker major conference school, and end up at Virginia, another weaker major conference school. We'll also play Hofstra out of the CAA, UMass and Dayton out of the A-10. San Diego from the WCC is coming to play us, and we've got Hofstra, Missouri State and Illinois State out of mid-major conferences.

All in all its a noticibly tougher schedule this year, unlikely to have any top 50 teams but hopefully a couple top 100 teams. If we can win 22 again this year I would expect an RPI in the 40s or 50s, good enough to put us on the bubble with some better wins. I don't know if its reasonable to expect more out of this squad so i'm not scheduling any teams significantly harder like a UNC or whatever.

Incoming Recruits

PF Lloyd Bright looks like an absolute stud. Rated 76 OVR, 2-4 points better than the 'top freshmen' in the conference the last couple seasons. As an incoming freshman, he has a defensive rebounding rating of 91. That might be the best in the conference. He's got 81 post offense/77 post defense ratings. 83 speed is super fast for a PF(A-), he is a good leaper, strong and good hustle(all A-/B range). 85 close/84 in traffic is great for a freshman. C+ potential is a bit less than I 'd hope for, but hopefully good enough to see him gain 1-2 points every year and end up in the 82-83 OVR range. The AI wants him to start at PF out of the gate.

SG Erkan Northcutt - 68 OVR which is nothing to sneeze at. But with Cooper and Lamkin, Northcutt looks like a redshirt candidate. He's average all over, 78 defense, 83 speed/82 quickness, 85 close/73 med/71 3. 76 in traffic. None of that is bad but nothing stands out. Looks like a redshirt guy and if I can't bring in better then he'll backup Lamkin.

PF Nathan Grundy - 68 OVR, he grew an inch since being recruited and is now 7 feet tall. His post play is just average(72 o/70 d), his rebounding is not great (70 o/78 d). But he has a couple things going for him. Well first, he's 7 feet tall. Second, he's got a 90 close range shot, 85 in traffic. 3rd, he's got a B- potential, so he'll do some developing for me.

SF Dwight Snowden - 65 OVR - Nothing really looks that good. he is athletic but not so much that it is exciting. 76 vert/62 str/70 hustle... c+ for all but nothing great. 74 defense, 78 close/69 med/62 3. He wanted playing time, and I think we'll redshirt him and be perfectly happy if he transfers. We'll likely make snagging a SF to replace House a priority if I can find one who looks to be better than Snowden.

Bright and Grundy give me a lot to be excited about. They effectively replace Delic and Sessoms and give me a lot of hope for this team.

Offseason Development

Most of the guys who came in as freshamn in the mid-high 80s last year have imiproved up into the low 70s now. Murphy, Lamkin and Mendoza are all rated 70 even, Keller got 2 points in the offseason to jump to 71.

Our top players all improved a bit as well. Cooper starts the year at 81 OVR, higher than where Delic started last year. House, Watson and Lufkin all come in rated 77 or 76 OVR. This is a highly talented team. We've got 9 guys rated 70 OVR or better.

A lot will depend on how Bright, Watson, Keller and Grundy fit into the rotation together, but we have the potential to be better than last year I think.

I've looked over my roster and began recruiting but I'll go into detail on that tomorrow, I've simmed up to my first game at Providence.

But, just to get a feel for how we should rate against our conference competition:

MAC Preseason Predictions

Entirely based on ratings:

1. Ohio - 83 OVR
2. Ball State - 81 OVR
3. Miami OH - 80 OVR
4. Akron - 78 OVR
5. Buffalo - 77 OVR
6. Toledo - 77 OVR
7. Kent State - 77 OVR
8. Western Michigan - 76 OVR
9. Eastern Michigan - 76 OVR
10. Northern Illinois - 76 OVR
11. Bowling Green - 75 OVR
12. Central Michigan - 75 OVR

Well, there is some talent in the league this year. There are no terrible teams near the bottom, and 3 teams rated over 80. Miami OH had a couple outstanding recruiting classes and it looks like that's starting to really pay off for them. Ball State looks to have 5 starters back from last year including one of the higher rated guys in the league.

We improved over last year, and we lucked out greatly to get a highly rated 4* recruit. We're aiming for more in recruiting this year, but right now we have to assume that this is the year we MUST shine in the MAC. We're only losing two guys, but its Cooper and House, our two big guns on offense. There will be a ratings dropoff next year, and there will absolutely be a performance dropoff unless i bring in two 4* studs or something that are just ready to go.

MAC Preseason Awards

Best Overall Player: Gary Edelin - SG - Ball State - 81 OVR (JR)
Best Freshman: Lloyd Bright - PF - Ohio - 76 OVR
Best Shooter: Gary Edelin - SG - Ball State - 81 OVR (JR)
Best Playmaker: Amir Bridges - PG - Miami OH - 73 OVR (SR)
Best Pro Prospect: Arzelle Cooper - SG - Ohio - 81 OVR (SR)
Best Defender: JR Robertson - PF - W. michigan - 73 OVR (SR)

Cooper is currently listed as "undrafted". I wonder if I can get him up to 83 OVR and with a great season could get him up in the 2nd round. I'm not going to change how I play to try to do it... but I do wonder

Coaching Goals

Lastly, since I should have been in bed 2-3 hours ago, goals that aren't completely impossible for me to obtain should things go right this year that would allow me to improve as a coach:

Sign the Mr Basketball for your state - he's a 3* SF, not terribly interested in us yet, but we'll make a push for him.

Assemble a top 20 recruiting class - Highly unlikely, but we are going to be aggressive this year, offering 2 4* guys early on, because why not? We've got great depth and just 2 scholarships to offer. There's no 3* guy out there that looks like someone we *have* to get.

Have a player chosen in the pro draft - Again, highly unlikely, but if Cooper could really turn it on this year...

Coach a team into the top 25 - Probably our most realistic goal, depending on how we are able to do against our tougher schedule this year.

Coach a team to the sweet 16 - Another long shot, but we'll have a deep, athletic team. If we can get there, we can get there as a 12 seed and have a shot.

Be chosen conference coach of the year - I would have won this last ear had I not choked in the MAC tourney. I assume 20 wins and a conference championship would win this award for me.

My next win goal is 200, I have 118 right now. If I can keep up a good level of talent then we reach this goal in 4 years. Based on where I have Ohio right now, I feel that 20 wins/season on average should be realistic.

That's all for tonight, I'm extremely disappointed about losing out in the MAC Semifinals last season, but extremely excited about our prospects this year. With a tougher schedule and 3 teams with OVR ratings in the 80s, it seems a lot more likely that we could contend for an NCAA Tournament at-large bid this year.

Where do you find which goals you have accomplished, and which ones are available???

Also, do you know where to find the list of which in-game goals (e.g. 10 dunks in a game) you have left to get points to buy historic NCAA teams, etc.?

On the coach profile page... where you can set things like your recruiting priorities and what defense you want to play, etc. You and your two assistant's images are at the top of this screen, highlight yourself and push down on the right analog stick and it'll pull up your coach's history and stats page. You can RB/LB through a few pages that show your results each season, your accomplishments(# of all-conference players, tournament bids/wins, stuff like that), and one of the pages is your list of career goals. It shows which ones you've accomplished and which ones are still left to do. Each one earns you a skill increase at the end of the year that you accomplish it in.

No idea on that one.

2014/15 Ohio Roster

I haven't tracked player development as closely as I have intended to do during the season, so for returning players I'm going to start noting how much they've improved when I look over the roster(since i have last season's roster overview posted already anyway).

There's really no tough decisions this year. Murphy stuck in the starting PG spot last year, Mendoza was incredibly effective with the backups, but when relegated to the 3rd scoring option when playing with the starters he loses a lot of his luster, so there is no need to change anything there.

Starting Lineup

PG Michel Murphy - SO - 6'2" 186 lbs - 70 OVR (+1)

With a full season and offseason to develop, even with 'C' potential, I would have hoped for more than just 1 point in the ratings.

Muprhy is fast(91 speed) but lacks the quickness to go with it(just 81). He is a poor ballhandler for a PG (77, D level quality), but an effective passer(79, C+). He's an outstanding on ball defender(85), and above average with the steals(73). 74 close/73 med/79 from 3, 79 off the dribble. It would seem that he should be a more effective scorer than I've made him so far. Partly he suffers from a long, drawn out shooting motion, making it harder for him to get open shots on kickouts. Partly he suffers from being on the court at the same time as Cooper and House. He starts primarily for his defensive ability at this point.

SG Arzelle Cooper - SR - 6'5" 202 lbs - 81 OVR (+3)

B- potential and he really has developed over the years. I have hopes that he can gain another couple points and end the year in the 83 range.

Speed and Quickness(91/86) and hustle(88) and ball handling(84) allow Cooper to be aggressive in transition, and any time there is an open lane to the basket in the half court set. He's an effective shooter(79 close/78 med/78 3) but most of his 20 point days usually come against slower defenders that he can blow by for lots of layups. He's a stud on defense, 88 on ball defense is the best I've ever had, and 80 steals rating means he gets his hands on more than his fair share of passes.

Cooper averaged 10.7 ppg last year, I hope to see that increase significantly.

SF Wendell House - SR - 6'9" 209 lbs - 77 OVR (+2)

Even with D potential House has developed into a nice all around player.

At 6'9" he can bang inside a bit if he has to, though his post skills are lacking. But he creates massive mismatches for almost every SF that tries to guard him. His size gives him an edge over guards trying to defend him, and his speed(85 speed/77 quickness, A-/C rating for a SF) gives him a big edge over any slower forwards that try to guard him. 78 defense which is above average for a SF. 74 steals which is a B rating, so he can play solid defense. 88 close/73 med/73 3/77 off the dribble/84 in traffic. He obviously succeeds the most when he can get to the basket. Add in a good vertical leap(84) and spectacular dunking ability(90) and he is the closest thing the MAC is going to see to a highlight reel superstar. If his outside shot was a little better he could probably score 25 every single game. Its still a threat. 13 ppg last year, and I hope to see this increase greatly.

House is by far the most fun player i've ever controlled. I had complained often in my years at NC A&T about how I've never had a quality SF and usually just ignore the position. Its amazing how the last 3 seasons have changed that.

PF Lloyd Bright - FR - 6'7" 226 lbs - 76 OVR

Bright is my exciting stud freshman. His size is a bit of a concern but at PF its acceptable. He's very good in the post(81 o/77 D), a beast on the boards(79 o/91 d!!!), and he's got the speed of a SF(3 speed/77 quickness). A great athlete, A- vertical/B strength/B- hustle hopefully will help add to his game. 85 close/70 med, 84 in traffic. Also, I notice he's rated 79 from the free throw line. My team FT % has been in the low to mid 60s in recent years. It'll be nice to have a good fT shooter. I don't expect a lot of scoring from Bright, espicially his freshman year. But I'm excited about him.

C Curtis Watson - JR - 6'10" 245 lbs - 76 OVR(+2)

Deciding whether to start Watson or Keller is probably my toughest task this year. In the end, I cannot resist the defense and rebounding that Watson offers. 89 off/84 def rebounding, both outstanding. Bright + Watson almost certainly give me the best rebounding duo in the MAC. House is a good rebounder for a SF as well. 70 post offense/79 post defense. 76 block rating, Watson is a very strong defensive player. He has good physical skills (76 vert/73 str/76 hustle, all A- or B). 88 close/91 in traffic make him a guy that can score down low, probably quite effectively at times. Watson started 19 games as a freshman, averaging over 7 boards/game. He was back on the bench behind Sessoms last year. I expect a lot out of him inside this year though back in the lineup.

Bench

PG David Mendoza - SO - 6'3" 174 lbs - 70 OVR (+1)

Like Murphy, only 1 point gained his freshman year, disappointing. 88 speed/81 quickness allows him to get to the basket against many poorer defenders. 85 handling/74 passing, he's a good ball handler(that's C+/C+ btw). He's made good gains on defense, 82 defense/79 steals make him a threat espicially against poorer backup PG's that he often sees. 76 close/69 med/77 3, only 74 off the dribble. Murphy should by all accounts be a better scorer than Mendoza. Mendoza's quickness allows him more transition baskets, and his shooting stroke is ideal, a very quick set shot like shot that allows him a lot more open shots. He provides a great lift off the bench, averaging 7 ppg last year in just about 12 minutes/game. He was an outstanding 42% from the 3 point line.

SG Chuck Lamkin - JR - 6'4" 209 lbs - 70 OVR (+3)

Lamkin made some solid gains last year and will be a good threat as usual off the bench. 83 speed/85 quickness, a bit unusual but the quickness seems to help him get to the rim with some frequency. 84 ball handling is solid, 84 close/64 med/78 3, just 74 off the dribble. That works out ok for me though, as I try to make most of my shots inside the paint, or from 3. I don't like mid-range jumpers. Lamkin's biggest weakness is his defense, 78 on ball defense, and 59 defensive awareness are both weak and have me a little worried about what might happen if he becomes the starter his senior year when cooper leaves. However, this year, I love him off the bench.

SF Kaylen Lufkin - JR - 6'8" 216 lbs - 76 OVR (+2)

Every year I point out how Lufkin is "House Lite" - He is tall and athletic for a SF, he scores in exactly the same ways House does, just not quite as often. 85 speed/84 quickness is incredible for a 6'8 guy. 91 hustle is better than house, vert and str are both noticibly lower though. 76 off the dribble/77 in traffic. 83 close/72 med/72 3, he can score from anywhere if left open, and he did make a few 3's last season.

PF Nathan Grundy - FR - 7'0" 256 lbs - 68 OVR

Its hard to keep a 7 footer out of the lineup. But he lacks the rebounding (70 o/78 d) and skills in the post (72 o/70 d) that I want to see. He looks like he can be a scorer(90 close/85 in traffic), but I'm perfectly content to get a feel for him on the reserve team for awhile this year. He has B- potential and I am hopeful that he will show a similar development line that Cooper did, gaining 2-3 points/year. I am going to be training him hard in rebounding. If his defensive rebounding numbers get over 80 its going to be very hard to keep him out of the lineup.

C JR Keller - SO - 6'10" 220 lbs - 71 OVR (+2)

What a great problem to have... 3 talented big men all 6'10" or taller, and one extremely talented 6'7 PF. How to get them all minutes and keep them all happy?

77 o/75 d rebounding leaves a lot to be desired. 82 post off/75 post d is a lot more like it. 71 blocked shot rating(C+) is pretty decent and makes him a threat down low. 87 close/82 in traffic, combined with his excellent post offense, and for that matter 73 offensive awareness rating all make it look like Keller has the tools to be an outstanding scorer inside. He scored 4.5 ppg last year and only has a career high of 12 points, but he did show me some things last year that I liked an awful lot. I expect him to better his career high this year even off the bench.

Reserves/Redshirts

SG Shawn Garcia - SO - 6'6" 199 lbs - 68 OVR (+2)

Just no room for him with Cooper and Lamkin out there. He plays terrible defense (78), isn't as good a shooter as lamkin(78 close/72 med/75 3... remember that I don't value the mid-range rating much). 75 off the dribble, only 82 speed/77 quickness. I'm a bit surprised that he didn't transfer last year. I'll be surprised if he doesn't transfer this year.

SG Erkan Northcutt - FR - 6'2" 190 lbs - 68 OVR - REDSHIRT

83 speed/82 quickness, 78 defense, 85 close/73 med/71 3. 76 off the dribble/74 in traffic. 77 ball handling is terrible(my other guards are 80+). Even when Cooper is gone I will be surprised if Northcutt offers me anything at all.

SF Dwight Snowden - SO - 6'7" 221 lbs - 65 OVR - REDSHIRT

My JC transfer, came in a bit weaker than i'd hoped. 76 speed/79 quickness, just good enough. 74 defense is terrible. 78 close/69 med/62 3. He can dunk, 84 dunking ability(B-). That's really it.

2014/15 Recruiting Preview

We've only got two scholarships this year, and two players graduating:

SG Arzelle Cooper - 81 OVR - Starter, key player

SF Wendell house - 77 OVR - Starter, key player

so the bad news is that I'm losing what are likely my two most important players. The good news is that I have a lot of depth and talent. I won't be rated 83 OVR next year probably, but give my young big men another year of development, put Lamkin and Lufkin in the starting lineup where Cooper and House are, and we'll still be very good.

I love my 4 big men and none are seniors. So I'm not recruiting any big men. I have lots of average players in my backcourt who could easily be outdone by a high quality recruit, so that's where I'm aiming.

So anyway, I'm aiming high. Probably too high:

My two scholarship offers:

5* SG Lelan Acasio - #16 OVR, #4 SG from Toronto, Canada. I don't expect to land him, and there's no way that i can by the early signing period. But he has the 'foreigner' feel to him. He likes Clemson and St John's and Marshall...he rates playing time higher than playing at a big program. Someone will probably come steal him, I've only got him to 70% so far. But we have a *lot* of backup targets, so its all good.

4* PG Ben Cannon - #69 OVR/#32 PG - Fort Wayne, IN - Again he doesn't care about a big program, so we have a shot. He does want to stay close to home, so if Indiana comes calling, we lose. But perhaps we can compete with Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan State as far as location goes, and we've shown early and concentrated interest. In fact, we've got him up to 87%. We've used all 3 visits, but we haven't done a campus invite yet, with still 3 weeks to go til the early signing period. We're aiming a little high here but I think we've got at least a shot.

If we don't land these guys, our next top target is Mr Basketball in Ohio, a 3* SF who really looks kinda average but we'd gladly spend a scholarship for a coaching point.

We also have a 4* PG backup that we'd go after if he doesn't have any offers by the time the early signing period is over.

And lastly, we have 3 3* guys up near 80% based on recruiting them as juniors. None have offers yet and if they don't go early we would have great shots at them.

Really if we can't land one of these guys that are a bit out of our league(ok, a lot out of our league for the 5* guy), we're just looking to grab the best 3* guys we can and hoping someone comes in rated a bit higher than expected. If they don't, great, more depth.

I ended up(quite unintentionally) scheduling a very light november, and as such only have 5 total games before the early signing period. Continuing on with simming 1 out of every 2 games, I'll be playing two games against teams rated right near me that will hopefully provide a really good challenge, and simming the other 3 to get to the early signing period ASAP.

We'll open the season at Providence later this evening.

Ohio (0-0) at Providence (0-0)

Providence is rated 81 OVR (79 off/82 def/83 sht/84 reb/88 coach)

For comparison, we are: 83 OVR (81 off/82 def/85 sht/91 reb/78 coach)

Providence is young, they have one starter with 3 bars of experience(out of 6), 3 starters with just 2 bars, and one guy who appears to be playing his first game ever.

For comparison again, Cooper has a full 6 bars, House 5, Watson 3 and Murphy 2.

Scouting

PG Dwight Braxton – SO – 76 OVR – 89 speed/85 quickness, 80 vertical for some solid physical skills. 89 defense is stellar, and a 76 steal rating is solid too. 90 handling/82 passing, both of which blow away anything Ohio has. 85 close/78 med/73 3. 83 off the dribble. This is a lot of talent too.

SG Trent Krayl – SR – 81 OVR – Krayl has all the right numbers in all the right places. 90 speed/86 quickness, 86 defense, 80 close/83 med/80 3/86 off the dribble/83 in traffic. He looks like a complete stud. Averaging 10.4 ppg last year, this looks like his first year starting.

SF Trey Cooley – FR – 72 OVR - After Braxton and Krayl, its nice to see Cooley, a guy with some holes. 82 speed/78 quickness is solid, he's 6'5” and a natural SF. He's not great on defense (79), 77 close/79 med/64 from 3, a threat if he gets to the basket but we'll try to keep him out on the perimeter.

PF Tre McCollum – SO – 68 OVR – 6'8” just like their center. We'll be bigger than them no matter who we have on the court. 78 orb/82 drb, ok but not great. 68 post offense/71 post defense, both poor numbers. 81 close/83 in traffic. Poor awareness.

C Jeff Mack – SR – 70 OVR – Size advantage: Ohio. 6'8”, Mack is a good offensive rebounder (82) but poor on the defensive end(73). He's average ot above average in the post(76 o/71 d). He's a good shot blocker(75). 88 close/82 in traffic isn't bad but isn't something we really fear either.

Providence is deep in general, everyone on their roster is rated 65 or better. However,it isn't split evenly at all, they have a LOT of guard depth, not much inside. We expect a large edge on the boards and if we can get McCollum and/or Mack in foul trouble we will be posting up SF's before too long.

We take a unity edge of 40-27 into the game.

They end up going with a 4 guard lineup for awhile, and we get the ball to Keller and Grundy 3 straight trips down the court for easy baskets. Keller scores 7, Grundy just two, on a nice dunk for his first college points. Starters are back in. Their 4 guard lineup is generating a lot of good looks at 3 which we're struggling to stop.

Very entertaining first half, and we managed to build a little separation as we moved on. We're making just enough from 3 to keep things opened up, and they have no answer inside at all. The foul situation ends up being pretty equal, they commit 8, us 6. But we draw 2 fouls on both their starting big men. Providence is 6-11 from 3. Their star player, krayl has 11 and is 2-2 from 3. Backup SG Zoellner is 2-2 from 3 and has 8.

We're just not missing anything. We are 5-7 from 3, 16-23 from the field. Murphy has 12 on 4-5 from 3. Cooper is 1-1 from 3 for our other long ball. Cooper has 9, Keller has 7, Watson 5. Bright and Grundy are off to slow starts, just 1 point and 2 boards for Bright, 2 points and no boards for Bright.

Bright with a 3 point play, his 2nd FG of the half and he's got 6 points. More importantly, its the 3rd foul on their PF McCollum. Bright and Watson have all 7 of our 2nd half points so far.

I went too long without calling a timeout here... We score to go up 61-46 and they go on a 10-0 run. I call a TO with the 5 point lead to get my backups in. We've got 4 fouls this half, they only have 2. Cooper and Watson both have 3 fouls.

They score 2 more before we manage a bucket inside by Keller to end their run at 12-0.

We should have fallen behind for the first time in a long time but they miss 2 free throws and we're still tied up. The poor defense played by our backups is a huge liability here.

68
Now they do take the lead, after we allow them to get an offensive rebound and a 3 point play on the putback. Just awful. We've committed 7 fouls for the half as well and they're shooting the rest of the way. I call a timeout to quiet the 6th man a bit.
2
5:50
69
73
Another 3 and they go up 4, we call a timeout to stop another 6th man bonus, and to get our starters back in. We tried very hard to get Keller and Grundy the ball inside, but they were swatting at everything and did a very good job preventing us from scoring in deep.
2
2:15

House has our last 6 points, all of them dunks, 2 in transition, one in the half court set. We've allowed 3 offensive boards in the last 3 minutes but our defense has stayed strong(and/or they have gone cold at a bad time). Providence timeout, their ball after the break.
2
0:57
75
77
We get two stops, have two chances to take the lead and fail. House gets a good move to the basket but their big man comes up big and forces him to pull up short, blocking his shot. Next time down they get a steal and a layup. I call a timeout to back off their press, our ball down 2.
2
0:35
75
78
House gets a pretty good look down low but misses, they board and we foul. Their PG, Braxton, makes the first, misses the 2nd. Our ball down 3 now.

UGH. Their PG, Braxton, straight up picks Murphy's pocket as he's setting up the offense, runs it down for a layup and ices the game.

Providence 82
Ohio 75

Well, road games are hard, but we had the game in hand and let it get away. My biggest mistake was not stopping their 10-0 run when we had gone up 15 with about 15 minutes left. I wanted to just run the clock down to the 13 minute mark to get the backups in to change the momentum. There's just no reason not to call a timeout and switch things up right away.

Their two best players were both very good. Braxton, the PG, burned us badly, 10-15 for 24 points, he had 5 steals. The 3 point threat, Krayl, scored 16 to compliment Braxton nicely.

Murphy: 12 points (none in the 2nd half)
Cooper: 9 points (3-7 shooting, not involved enough)
House: 14 points
Bright: 8 points/5 boards
Watson: 9 points/12 boards/5 assists

Keller: 9 points

No one else had more than 4 for the backups. After a fast paced first half they held us to 27 points in the 2nd half to come back and win.

Our next game is a simmed game against North Florida, a team rated 67 OVR, at home. I made a mistake and scheduled it one day after the Providence game. Does fatigue carry over, b/c this one is a major WTF game.

North Florida 86
Ohio 53

They outscore us 47-22 in the 2nd half.

House scores 10. Bright 8, Watson has 0 with 7 boards. Keller has 9 off the bench, Grundy 6, a terrible result.

Our next game is at home against an evenly rated San Diego team. We'll be playing that one.

San Diego (1-2) at Ohio (0-2)

San Diego is rated similar to providence, 82 OVR (82 off/81 def/83 sht/82 reb). San Diego looks a lot more experienced and a lot more balanced.

Scouting

PG Maceo McCollum – SR – 77 OVR – 89 speed/92 quickness(damn!). 83 defense, 86 ball handling. Awareness is great on both ends (74/76). 80 close/74 med/66 3. 82 off the dribble, 77 in traffic, looks like the type to drive more than shoot the long range shot.

SG Trevor Kent – SR – 74 OVR - 88 speed/82 quickness. 81 defense(good but Cooper is better than that). 83 close/73 med/79 3. 79 off the dribble and in traffic. He's dangerous but I have bigger worries, if cooper can stay tight on him we'll be ok.

SF D'Marr Minnieweather – SO – 70 OVR – 6'6”, 82 sped/70 quickness. 79 defense, above average for a SF. 83 close/69 med/63 3. He doesn't lok like a scorer at all. He really looks like dead weight.

PF JJ Danley – JR – 74 OVR – 6'8”, not much of a rebounder (73 o/79 d) but a strong post prescence (85 o/80 d). 85 close/84 in traffic. Not a shot blocker, and he just has average strength (66).

C Ivan Floyd – SR – 79 OVR – Floyd is only 6'9” which is a relief. This talent with a little more size would be unstoppable. 80 orb/84 drb. 83 post offense/83 post defense. 78 blocked shot rating. Defensive Awareness 81. 90 close/79 in traffic. 87 strength. Its only through 3 games but Floyd is averaging 23 points/game so far.

San Diego has 10 guys rated 68 or above. They have talent and its evenly balanced. Danley and Floyd look like they are extremely strong post players and will be hard to score against. With a senior led team, they have a 56-44 team unity edge.

It's Wendell House's world and the rest of us are just living in it. House scores the last 9 points of the half for us. We commit 8 fouls on the half, they 11. We hold them to 1-8 from beyond the arc and 13-31 from the floor, solid defensive half. Floyd has 6 and 2 fouls. Kent, their SG has 6.

House has 17. Murphy 7. Lufkin 6 off the bench, and Mendoza 5. Cooper only has 2 again this half. This time we've got a 15 point lead we need to hang on to.

Well then!

Murphy: 9 points/5 assists/4 steals
Cooper: 5 points
House: 26 points
Bright: 4 points/4 boards
Watson: 16 points/8 boards

Mendoza: 11 points
Lufkin: 8 points

House had 23 when I took him out at the 13 minute mark. If it'd been a closer game and I'd played it out it was an easy 30+ game without forcing anything at all.

Cooper with 16, Lamkin 12, Bright 6 points/12 boards.

early signing period

First, we've got one more game. Its at a terrible Northern Arizona team. After this we have a string of A-10/mid-major types that will be good to play out anyway.

December 4th

Ohio 81
at N Arizona 61

18 from house, 14 points/12 boards from Cooper, 12 points/12 boards from Watson. Keller with 10 and 6.

I decide that the 5* recruit is a lost cause and drop him. I stick on the 4* PG out of Indiana and make a move on a top 150 PG that I have up to 85% without even offering.

The interesting thing is that both of them have campus visits on the last day of the early signing period. They're both in the low 90s though so I don't think I can get either to 100(but I'm not sure how awesome a campus visit can be)

And, on the final signing day, 4* PG Ben Cannon, the #69 overall recruit, signs with Indiana, who offered him a scholarship in the middle of the week.

Our other target, 3* PG Tim Barker is a solid #1 for me. Bradley and Ball State are on the list and there's a long time to make progress, but we have a firm lead. He's #142 in the nation/#49 among PGs. Above average passing and ball handling, a B- defender and C+ Steals guy, average shooter, average speed.

I decide to leave my other scholarship open for now. I have two primary targets for it:

4* PG Ron Jagla - #98 overall/#44 PG, but he looks like he might scout out to a SG just as well. A- speed, B defense/C+ steals, B- handling/C+ psasing. B midrange/C+ from 3, A- off the dribble. He's from Michigan, and likes notre Dame and Cincinnati the most, but playing at a big school is only his #3 priority and no one has made an offer yet. We're tied with Marshall and Bowling Green for 3rd on his list basically(though we're listed #4).

3* SF Rooney Santiago - #140 OVR/#36 SF. This is Mr Basketball in Ohio. The reason I haven't made an offer yet is that I've already given him 3 home visits and I only have him up to 71%. He seems to have his heart set on Ohio State or Cincinnati. He looks solid but I don't want to give him a scholarship offer only to find that we had a better shot with the 4* guy down the road and risk losing both if I switch the offers around.

So for now, we've landed no one, and Scholarship #2 stays open. We seem to have a fair shot at two top 150 players though.

Mid-Major Poll

So the mid major poll is out and we are currently #9 which is awesome given that we have two losses.

A few things to note:

-- Ball State is #21, N Illinois is #8, so there's 3 MAC schools on the list.

-- San Diego, the team we just demolished, is #14.

-- Hofstra, the team we play next, is #15.

Hofstra (6-2) at Ohio (4-2)

Hofstra is another solid mid-major team, rated 79 OVR (80 off/78 def/84 sht/82 reb). Their only losses are to top 25 major conference teams (Maryland and Pitt), but they don't look to have any quality wins, unless you count a win over a poor Ohio State team.

They look to have a lack of front court depth, hopefully something we can take advantage of.

Scouting

PG George Ewing – SO – 72 OVR – 89 speed/83 quickness, 83 defense, 82 hands/82 passing, 70 steals, all solid numbers. 77 close/72 med/84 3, 79 off the dribble. Deadly accurate from 3, we'll need to stay tight on him.

SG Dennis Gilchrist – SO – 75 OVR – Gilchrist has the all the right skills, 86 speed, though only 79 quickness. 82 close/75 med/80 3, 81 off the dribble. 86 defense, 78 steals rating both look very very good. A 78 clutch rating is one of the highest i've seen, if they are down 3 late I'd assume he gets the ball at all costs. Only 7.5 ppg so far.

SF Dante Chalmers – SR – 73 OVR – 6'8”, 83 speed/77 quickness. 83 close/71 med/72 3, he can hit it from anywhere if he has to. 83 in traffic is pretty good. 78 vertical/76 str/74 hustle are all solid for a SF, and 74 defensive awareness is quite good for this level. He's an above average on ball defender for a SF, rated 77. Just 6.8 ppg/5.0 rpg so far this year, but he looks like a pretty good athlete that we'll want to contain.

PF Bronski Pippen – JR – 68 OVR – Only 6'8”, a terrible rebounder (74 o/69 d), 78 post offense/77 post defense are both quite solid. 87 close/79 in traffic. He averages 6.6 ppg.

C Otis Lindsey – SR – 79 OVR – 6'11”, Lindsey really isn't a very good rebounder(78 o/75 d). He's solid in the post on both ends (83 o/77 d), a good shot blocker(80), and has solid hands for a big man. 92 close/87 in traffic, a good dunker, he looks like a scoring threat. He has great awareness (73 o/79 d), and great physical abilities, 86 strength/80 hustle. He's consistent and clutch. And he's averaging 20.4 ppg so far this year.

There is a lot of talent here. Ewing and Gilchrist are deadly shooters, and Lindsey is a strong inside scorer. They have no backups inside, no PF or C on the roster besides their starters. Team Unity is slightly in their favor, 53-47.

We're under 50%, 11-24 on the half, and 7-12 from the line. Grundy leads us with 11 points off the bench. House has 7, and Watson 4. Murphy only has 3, Cooper 2, Bright 0.

Hofstra 56

Keeping their big man, Lindsey in foul trouble was probably the single biggest thing we could do to win this game. He still scored 10 points in 15 minutes, though 4 of those were in the final minute of the game when I was happy to give up 2's instead of 3's.

Cooper, for all his offensive struggles, is great on defense. Their best shooter, Gilchrist, goes 2-10 from the floor today with Cooper guarding him for most of that.

Murphy: 3 points/2 assists/2 steals
Cooper: 10 points
House: 10 points (5-12 from the FT line... ugh)
Bright: 6 points/7 boards
Watson: 4 points/9 boards

Grundy: 17 points/6 boards
Lamkin: 7 points

Grundy is the player of the game today, his high so far this year had been 6 points and 5 boards. Very nice game for him.

Our next game is on the road at a tough Dayton team, this will be another good challenge for us similar to the Providence game earlier in the year. Hopefully if we get ahead in this one, we won't give the lead away.

Yeah, it is good enough that I'll have at least a couple top 100 wins(and hopefully more) if I end up in the same position as last season and need to turn to at-large hopes to make the tournament. One thing I didn't do was schedule anyone better than me, I should have given myself a couple chances to pull off upsets vs likely top 50 teams.

The MAC is a lot better this year too which will help. This of course all assumes I will be able to win 20 games vs the tougher schedule.

Ohio (5-2) at Dayton (6-4)

Dayton is probably my biggest non-conference test, along with Providence. Both are road contests against similarly matched teams. Dayton is rated 82 OVR (81 off/81 def/84 sht/86 reb). At this high level they match up very well with us and are likely favored since its at their place.

Similar to Hofstra, Dayton only has two natural big men on their roster. We have a small (50-48) unity edge, not worth anything I'd assume.

Scouting

PG Dazzmon Moran – FR – 77 OVR – 92 speed/83 quickness. 82 defense. 85 handling/89 passing, that's B+ passing talent, which is exceptional. 86 close/71 med/72 3, 83 off the dribble. Not an unstoppable scorer but very good for a point guard who distributes the ball so well. 6.7 ppg/4.5 apg.

SG Dana Blue – SR – 74 OVR – natural PG. 90 speed/84 quickness, 80 defense. 84 close/75 med/75 3, 78 off the dribble and in traffic both. 6.4 ppg, he looks pretty darn good but appears overshadowed by the other starters.

SF Spanky Felder – SR – 81 OVR – 83 speed/79 quickness, 83 close/80 med/71 3, 81 off the dribble, 83 in traffic, 91 dunker. All outstanding ratings for a 6'8” SF. 77 defense which is also above avaerge for a SF, 75 awareness, offense and defense each, both very very good. 79 vertical/77 str/75 hustle, C+/B+/B- respectively. 77 ball handling, almost as good as some guards. This is an outstanding talent. He is averaging 18.6 ppg so far this year.

PF Chas Forbes – JR – 77 OVR – 6'8”, 80 post offense/75 post defense, both solid. 87 close/89 in traffic, again very good. 73 blocked shot rating, 66 steals, also quite good, passes into the post or over the top will be tougher as a result of that. 76 orb/86 drb, an outstanding defensive rebounder. 81 speed/76 quickness is insane for a PF, the guy can flat out run the floor. 80 defensive awareness. 11.9 ppg/6.4 rpg so far this year.

C Varney Jack – SO – 68 OVR – 6'9” so we're going to have a size advantage in this game. 77 orb/80 drb, solid but not spectacular. 76 post offense/68 post defense, that 68 is bad for them. 87 close/83 in traffic. He's very strong(84). Just 6.1 ppg.

Felder and Forbes are both incredible players, Moran is a pretty ideal point guard as well. They have a bakcup SF rated 77 OVR and another backup rated 74 OVR, they don't have big men but they have a ton of overall depth, and they have a few SF on the bench that are 6'7 or 6'8 and can rebound, so they have a bit more inside than it appeared at first glance.

Cooper leads us with 7, then 4 players have 6 points each (House/Keller/Grundy). Both teams are shooting just under 50%. We're only 2-9 from 3, they are 5-12. We didn't start committing a lot of turnovers or anything, they just started hitting everything they put up.

They use up most of the shot clock, but end up with a 3 pointer for their troubles. We get House a dunk on our end, he's got 20 now. They're cutting into the lead trading 3's for 2's, a stop would be nice here.

Hah, that works. They work it in low and make a contested layup by one of their guards. We get a 3 by Murphy and the lead is back out to 7.

After we both come up empty, they get a short bucket by Jack, their center. Our ball with a 5 point lead and the chance to take the game under a minute if we want to.

We work the ball to Cooper for an open jumper, but he misses. House is called for over the back skying for the rebound. Their ball.

They pretty easily get an open look down low. Only a 4 second difference between the shot and game clock.

They choose not to foul, and House hits a jumper from 18 feet out with about 7 seconds left to seal the victory.

Ohio 85
Dayton 80

Their SG Blue was their star, with 18 points. We did hold him to 5 in the second half. Their 81 rated SF, Felder, scored 9, well under his average, despite playing 30+ minutes. They were impressive from three, 12-27, and that kept them in the game time and time again.

House controlled the 2nd half when the starters were on the court, and Grundy and Keller combined for the backups to make us a force in the post.

Murphy: 3 points/3 assists
Cooper: 7 points (0 in the 2nd half)
House: 22 points (16 in the 2nd half)
Bright: 4 points/9 boards
Watson: 7 points/11 boards

Mendoza: 8 points
Grundy: 11 points
Keller: 10 points

We end up with a huge edge on the boards, 36-23. Grundy and Keller are making me very happy with their offense on the backup squad, but its the rebounding that has Bright and Watson secure on the first team.

This is really a good, quality win for us. Whether it will count as one to the selection committee in March won't be up to us, but beating a talented team on the road like this is a really nice step for us.

Slider Changes

I'm going to increase the injury frequency and injury effects both by 3, raising the frequency to 63 and effects to 71. I'm not sure what EF27 changed them too, i was a little hesitant to do so at first seeing that I get a number of injuries in my simmed games(I get a lot of day to day stuff that I don't mention). But I do see opponents with players who are OUT way more often that I am missing anyone myself. So its time to raise the injuries a bit.

We move up to 7th in the latest mid-major poll, jumping up over conference foe Northern Illinois. The WAC looks like the place to be this year, with 4 teams in the top 6 of the poll (Nevada, Utah State, Fresno State, and Hawaii).

Its obviously meaningless at the momet, but our RPI is absurdly high, 13th. This appears to be mainly due to the fact that we are 4-1 on the road, even though 3 of the 4 wins are not really worth anything. Dayton is a top 100 team for now though.

We've got 4 non-conference games left:

vs Illinois State (78 OVR)
vs Missouri State (74 OVR)
at Virginia (78 OVR)
vs UMass (75 OVR)

The CPU was down 3 under 40 seconds and didn't foul? I don't think I've ever seen that...

Yeah, it was the first time I saw it too. They didn't full court press, I waited about 8 seconds to cross the time line, assuming they'd foul when I got over half court. Eventually I realized that nothing was going to trigger the intentional foul that should have been coming, and just ran my offense. But by the time I decided to start doing that the clock was already down to 20 seconds.

Illinois State (5-3) at Ohio (6-2)

Illinois State out of the MVC is a decent 78 OVR (78 off/80 def/80 sht/81 reb). Interesting to me is that they have a coach rated lower than me(75, compared to my 78). They also have an RPI ranking of 40 right now, which I'm probably obsessing about a bit much but I'm curious to see how this shakes out in the end for me and if these are just artificially elevated early on, etc. They have a 1 point road loss to Penn State and a 5 point loss to Northern Illinois, they also played Providence and lost by 8 at home.

Scouting

PG Zack Sneed – SO – 77 OVR – 90 speed/89 quickness. 93 defense, 'A' rated and one of the highest i've seen. 82 hands/83 passing. 79 close/70 med/76 3. 87 off the dribble. 79 steals, a B- rating... that defense + that steals usually means that I am in for a very tough day. 9.6 ppg/6.4 apg. His career high for steals in a game is 5. Lets hope he doesn't top that against us.

SG Jaime Strawberry – SR – 70 OVR – 89 speed/82 quickness. 86 defense, 76 steals. 82 close/66 med/77 3, 79 off the dribble. 7.3 ppg.

SF Brennon Blue – JR – 79 OVR – Blue looks like a 6'8” SG. 80 speed/77 quickness, 86 defense(outstanding for a SF). 85 close/82 med/77 3. 85 in traffic, 86 dunk, 74 clutch... he can play in the post too. 89 vertical, an outstanding leaper. This guy is the real deal. Only averaging 10.6 ppg but they play a lot of games under 60 it seems.

PF Lenny Stafford – FR – 66 OVR – 6'9”, terrible on the boards (71/69), and in the post (72/68). 84 close/78 in traffic. He is strong for a PF and hustles, but he looks like he's pretty outmatched compared to our big men.

C Dontaye Bakinde – SO – 71 OVR – 6'10”, decent but not great on the boards(78 o/77 d). Same in the post (79 o/76 d). 86 close/84 in traffic. He's strong (76) and has solid awareness (72, a B- rating) on defense. 7.9 ppg/4.3 rpg.

The biggest worry I have against these guys is their defense. Sneed, Strawberry and Blue put up a very solid defense on the perimeter, and Sneed and Strawberry are both fast enough to present problems. If any of them can put up a big scoring number against us, we could be in trouble.

Our big edge on the other side is that they lack depth. They have a backup PG rated 70 OVR, a very good 3 point shooter named Ian tyler. But they only have these 6 guys rated above 65, and only2 more rated over 60. They do have a 6'10” PF and 7'1” C coming off the bench rated 63 and 62, that size will help.

They are also fairly young, team unity is only 33, while ours is 50.

I can already tell that Strawberry is going to be the guy that kills us today. He has an instant release on his shot. He's 1-2 from 3 so far, there is no way our guys can close on him unless they're sitting on top of him at all times, and of course, even in tight pressure, they don't do that.

Backups are in. We just scored 4 points in the last 30 seconds. They are fast, have good hands on defense, and have good shot blockers. Cooper has had 3 shots blocked already, a 3, a mid-range jumper and a drive to the basket. We're having to be very methodical to find shots that are open, and having to be a lot more careful than usual protecting the ball. I forsee a low scoring game unless we can get the fast break going.

A 3 by Mendoza gives us our biggest lead of the game so far, Illinois State calls a timeout.

Stellar defense, and we pick up 2 from house, 2 from cooper, and 2 from watson. 4 of the 6 in this little stretch are 2nd chance points, we seem to be doing very well on the offensive glass. Illinois State with a timeout.

HALF

Wow, the starters with exceptional play the remainder of the half. Illinois State is scoreless over the final 6 minutes and 15 seconds, and we end the half on a 10-0 run. Illinois State is 6-21 from the field, 2-7 from 3, and 5-7 from the line. Somehow they are only credited with 3 blocks. I would have guessed 6, maybe even 7. Strawberry has 4 points, he picked up two fouls in 10 minutes and sat Sneed and Blue, their other two most talented players, have 0 points on 0-8 shooting.

House and Cooper both have 8 for Ohio. Cooper is 2-8 from the floor though, and 4-4 at the line. He's had a lot of trouble. Mendoza's 5 off the bench is best out of the backups. We are shooting 12-28, and have a 20-10 edge on the boards, including 6 offensive rebounds and 8 2nd chance points.

Wow, we just have these guys completely outclassed. They're getting to the rim, and they're getting shots that it seems like they'd like. House and cooper both should have 2 or 3 blocks each but it doesn't look like they get credited correctly at all for tipping a long range shot. When they get to the rim Bright and Watson are playing great defense seem to be forcing a lot of contested shots by guys that aren't great in traffic.

Backups are in.

We score the next 4 and lead by 26 with 9:30 to go. I go ahead and sim to the end.

Ohio 64
Illinois State 33

How embarrassing for them.

Murphy: 3 points/2 assists
Cooper: 11 points
House: 15 points/5 boards/3 steals
Bright: 2 points/13 boards
Watson: 6 points/8 boards

Mendoza: 12 points
Lufkin: 7 points
