We go into the playoffs looking like paper tigers.. Defense was weak, offense was the worst we've had in years. Still went 14-2 against a weak schedule, but don't expect it to go much further against elite playoff competition.
Chuck seems to have finally reached the end of his best days. Time to look for a new arm.

We seemed to be roughly the same team as last year underneath, but the record sure doesn't show it.

Well, I found out my offensive gameplan does not suit Bryan Rogers (55% completion rate). Frustrating because Rogers had a solid preseason. Will give Parliman a chance in preseason next year. Hopefully, one of he can show us something next season.
Our defense also did not play up to expectations. I understand I had a lot of rookies and we should do better next season... but Korey Floyd only had 4.5 sacks, while last minute pickup John Todd had 7.5. I need more from Floyd in coming seasons, otherwise his big rating really doesn't mean much. Had several guys that didn't improve as I'd hoped. Special teams wasn't as special as I'd hoped either. Have 3 guys with 100 ST bars, my punt returner's bar is 81 and kick returner 88. Neither performed up to my expectations. I hired a rookie kicker hoping to increase my kickoff effectiveness, but I lost a LOT of FG accuracy (went from 75% last season to 61% this season). Most likely the reason we lost several close games. Our punter was almost everything we'd hoped for. Would like to have seen a few more In20 punts and less TBs... but overall did a great job. On positive notes, had 5 guys creep a little this season. 2 on offense: RB Butch Carlson +7/+3 - got this guy mostly for ST as he had a 100 ST bar. Probably be our starting RB next season, depending on Cassidy's TC. WR Oliver Penn +12/+5 - Was hoping at least one of my two WRs would make a move like this. Both creeping offensive players still are showing green in some bars, so I hope they will both creep a bit more. 3 on defense: LB Dan Mueller +14/+4 - Was expected. Had him as one of the top five players in the rookie class. Should be a centerpiece for a long time. CB Harold Ashcraft +12/+5 - Another top defensive player who had an expected boost and good stats season. Need another CB to complement his skills. SS Charles Hilliard +20/+3. Not much creeping, but it's good where he is. Had a solid season. Hilliard has some more green, the other two are likely done. Good news is that all 3 played up to my expectations. So, it looks like I have a core group of players, plus my offensive line did an excellent job this season as well (12th in sacks allowed and 1st in Blocking %). So, I like the way this team is starting to look. My big concerns next season are to get a better kicker, get a QB who fits our system better, and get at least 1 more WR for said QB to throw to. I also need to find a few more players who fit my defense better. Some are just not going where I'd like to see them go. Not a successful season... but a good building year. Good luck to all the playoff teams... give 'em hell! |

Ok, so going into the season I had two year starter QB Henning slated to start. He did horrible in pre-season. I put little value in pre-season, but he also pretty much sucks and was horrible last year.
I had two reverse creeper QBs on my roster. They both started very high in future (60+) and I snagged them on purely bars last year as rookies. They both took big hits int he original TC, so I benched them. Well, both of them also took no hits this year. Lorenzo Ponce had a future of 55 and good scrambling ability, so I said.. "what the hell?"... and I started him. We proceed to go 13-3 and have the most yards (and up there in points, etc) of any team in the league earning ourselves a bye week. Go figure.

Oh - and I had 3 10+ sack players, including the 72/72 rated DT I picked up AFTER Training Camp.
Sweet .

In Chicago we went 9-7 which is about what I expected.. thought I may have had an outside chance at a wildcard and came up a short. An average season.
Took me awhile to find it - big surprise seeing Portland take amazing rookie RB Berkhoffer and switch him to FL. Sure he's a great WR too, but wouldn't a high rated RB getting more touches have a bigger impact than at WR? How can the Vikings be -70mil in cap room? Oh I see the same question in the rules thread and Ben explaining there. |

Offensive rookie of the year, but go 10-6 and lose out on the playoffs to New Orleans on a tie-breaker. Alas. Looks like my defense let me down.
My current QB wants too much to resign, not sure what we'll do for next year.

This is pretty standard in FOF. Elite WR have a high impact - probably more than an elite RB (longer useful careers, too).

Doesn't this go against the grain of the general idea of the league? Specifically: DRAFT CLASS: Will be generated until there's no QB or WR over 6.5 adjusted rating. The idea is for teams to try something other than the usual all out passing attack, or, at least, to try to find the hidden gems in the rookie classes. Now that one person has done it, everyone in the league is considering this... and again, it negates the idea of generated draft classes with no WR over 6.5 adjusted. |

Dallas finishes 11-5 and wins the division, but it was a disappointing season. The defense did not play well at all. Our big play numbers were very low compared to seasons past and we gave up many more points than we have over the past two seasons.
We get New Orleans in the first round and we beat them during the regular season, but it will be tough to do it again. Even if we get by them, I don't see us going much further. Made some changes to the GP, so we'll see what happens. Good luck to the rest of the playoff teams.

Agreed - I think we should just ban it here in FOWL.

Groo: I think Quik's point is that your "now that one person has done it..." thing is way off. It's been done quite a few times already. I've tried to make sure we didn't have RBs small enough to do it very effectively. I didn't think a 218-pounder would do it that easily. I've generally just made sure we didn't have any RBs under 210 with high receiving bars. Maybe that should be 220. Easier to do it that way than to have to police stuff.

I have one small concern here. If you do watch for light RB with high receiving bars and avoid them, will it limit the number of good receiving backs we see? One great thing about having a nerfed WR/QB pool is that we can focus more on throwing to RBs and TEs and I like that. My fear is that we may be inadvertently nerfing RBs too...
