For you music fans.....Grooveshark
For the past few weeks, I have been going to this site when I want to listen to a song that I have in my head that requires a quick listen. I like this site for the simple fact that you can listen to a wide variety of songs and create a cool online playlist with a pretty simplistic interface. Although this site also helps you to discover music, it's primary function is to create your own online jukebox.

WTF - this is a pretty sweet site.
My coworker (and my sister) mentioned it to me. I like it - it's like Pandora except you can create the playlist and listen to what you want. Great shit. |

Yes yes. I guess it's ad-supported hmm, so that's how they're able to do it? Well that and VIP members...

I use it to post stuff on Facebook. Seems to have a rather large database of music as well.

yeah, Passacaglia posted about it in teh iPhone apps thread this morning. Have not had time to look at it, but sure looked pretty interesting.
Also for music fans, anybody ever heard of Audiogalaxy. Found it when I read this review about their iPhone app and it looks almost too good to be true. Allows you to stream anything from your home music library as long as you have internet access (wifi or 3G)... FM

dola, I also posted about the the Top 100 by Jango iPhone app in the iPhone app thread yesterday. Also pretty good to stream some good stuff. Listened to their Metal mix for about 30 minutes yesterday and Only used the skip button once...

The issue I have with these types of things is that my only home computer is a laptop and I don't leave it online 24-7, so they're useless to me unfortunately.

I used Audiogalaxy back in the day....it was one of the first music sites I used to learn about new stuff. It was great, because you'd post and literally tons of folks would send you on a wild chase for more music. It was a great community, not so much because you knew anyone, but for finding lots of obscure music from around the world that I'd never otherwise get to hear.
But it's obviously been rebranded and is very different from it's origins due to the change in the marketplace since those days. Still, it was fun.

There's still no iPhone/iPad app for it here, because it was removed when the labels howled.

I didn't even think we could get to the website -- perhaps I'm thinking of something else.

You're thinking of Spotify, which is like a fully legal version of Grooveshark. I got banned from uploading on Grooveshark because I did what it told me and matched my songs to their service. Evidently, if others haven't uploaded a song, it just uploads your's for everyone to listen to. Well, if the label sees the song and objects, then Grooveshark bans you from uploading your songs. So wait, I can't upload my music anymore because I did what you asked me to do, then I got in trouble for it? So note, if you pay for Grooveshark, the money only goes to Grooveshark, not to the people you are listening to (and yes, I know they get barely any money from record labels, but at least they had some say in the matter to start). |

Yeah, that's a pretty weird coincidence that this thread got bumped a little bit after I mentioned it. But anyway, it's pretty cool -- I used it for a while at the office when Pandora was blocked, but I still prefer Pandora (maybe that would change if I registered an account at grooveshark). |

haha, I had not realized this was a bump of an old thread. DT must have seen it in the apps thread then and made searched for it... Good one. FM
