Tarvaris Jackson was 8-4 as a starter in his second year. His stats that year were slightly better than what Favre is doing now...and that was with Troy Williamson and Bobby Wade as his top receivers. I don't see how a broken down Favre (who has been record setting streaky in both directions throughout his entire career) right now is any better of an option than Jackson.

Well...if Willis was averaging 3 tackles per game and was leading the league in missed tackles, I'd probably say you're right.

Jackson is a 77.9 rated QB for his career. Considering Favre when healthy this year is less than that, do you know who Favre is at this point? Is Jackson so horribly bad that a 40 year old injured game killing INT prone QB is better? I would be more than willing to give Jackson a run with that offense which is better than what he had while he was starting before.

I don't think anybody is debating who is better in their prime...Jackson and Favre. The argument here is that Favre right now is shit, and Jackson can at least give the Vikes a half-way decent chance. There are few QB's in the league not named David Carr or that would play as well as Favre right now in that offense.

Jackson needs to be given a little slack. Kid has thrown 545 career passes. His QB rating for those passes were higher than Manning and Steve Young's at the same point in their careers. And nearly identical to the beloved Favre's as well. He won't develop into a HOF QB, but right now he's (far) better than a crippled interception machine.

Talk about a blanket statement. Smith has at least been an NFL backup caliber QB. Russell is arguably the worst #1 pick in the history of the league.

Alex Smith is also having a better year than Favre right now.

This is true. Performance-wise, Smith (and any other backup in the league) is light years ahead of Russell. Smith is most likely going to be a career 75-80 rating QB. Russell would have been bad as an undrafted FA.

Just to put things in perspective...Russell's career QB rating is just one point less than Favre's rating this year.

Brett Favre in his prime... one of the best to ever play the game.

But this is all pretty academic. Favre right now is an immobile target for defenses with two ankle fractures. It's not if Tarvaris Jackson gets a chance to play... but when?

If the above is the case... then why not now? To even get to 9-7, the Vikings have to play .700 ball the rest of the way.

Right. But what does that have to do with Jackson being an improvement over Favre?

It's as believable for a QB to go from 33/7 to 15/35 just as it is for a QB to go from 22/22 to 33/7 or 30/17 to 20/29 or 19/24 to 33/14 or 18/18 to 28/15.

I wouldn't say 35 INT's...maybe closer to 29. You know, like he did in 2005? Or maybe just 24, you know, like he did in 1993? Or even just 23, you know, like he did in 1998 and 1999? Or, this is giving him the benefit of the doubt, maybe just 22, you know...like he did in 2008?

Too bad this is all pointless, since none of us are making the decision. We should do the FOFC Groupthink again, and try to do it so that we get people to care about things this much.

I'd say top 20, but not in my top 10 of all time, even in his prime I'd choose other Qbs in their prime over him, like Manning or Marino.

I know I can be a jerk about certain things pertaining to how some of you rip on the referees, but it's just because I am one and I know how hard the job it.

However, please understand that at the end of the day these guys are trying their best and do not want to screw games up. 99.9% of them have a lot of pride in what they do and when I hear a guy stand in front of a group like I did tonight and talk about how he got a call this morning from a guy saying that he just planted a bomb at business of the referee, makes me sick. The FBI had to be called in. The same guy got death threats and had guys calling him saying they were on their way to his house with a gun after the Detroit game this year.

I know none of you hear would consider anything like this, but try to keep a little perspective that these people are human too. I will step off my soap box now.

I think this board could use this occasional soap box perspective. Certainly there's a lot of idiot sports fans elsewhere that need it desperately.

I'll never understand why people take officiating mistakes so goddamn personally, when their error rate is no worse (and probably far better) than the athletes playing the game, or any fan in their own jobs. Some people just have a very unhealthy relationship with sports and the games they watch on TV. They just can't handle it.

The story that Dr. Sak shared is a sad one but I don't think most sports fans take officiating mistakes any more personally than they take any mistakes made on the playing field or in their personal life. The fact is we don't accept that people in general make mistakes whether it is the official on the field or the waitress who can't get our stinking order right. When you add in the passion of sports fans and the betting angle, I can see how things get irrational. Not excusing the nonsense described above, but it does not shock me. That is the consequences of sports being big business.

it's a strange time in sports. we have the technology to eliminate human error in all sports but we push back because of tradition and not wanting to remove the human element.

but if there is a missed call that changes the outcome of the game it leads on sportscenter and the echo chamber screams we need replay/goal cameras/robots/etc.

Personally I very very rarely complain about the refs or a bad call, even if it affects the outcome of a game. I can't stand replay, I wished it had crashed and burned. Completely interrupts the game, takes to long. I cringe at it being expanded or becoming more prevalent in other sports.

I realize I'm in a minority here.

I agree.

But the thing that always confuses me is the difference between how replay is handled by the NFL and college level.

It seems a college replay lasts less than sixty seconds and they come back with the correct call far more often than it seems the NFL does... and it takes the NFL three times as long to do it.

Maybe the NFL needs to look at how the college game handles replay.

You can squeeze in a Bud commercial and a Wrangler commercial during the replay.
