Finally! I have some respectable players here. It's a shame that I don't have the choice to even redshirt one of them, but they should be fine.

Last year turned out much better than I expected. I even had a Rimington and Outland trophy winner in Ray on the line. Were getting better, but the most important part is we actually have depth. Last year it wasn't that depth was bad...it's that we had none.

Apparently Latimer was good enough to be in the running for the Groza award. Austin has turned into a pretty decent player. Like I've said before, it's really hard to find guys in recruiting, so I won't worry about it unless I have a 4* or better asking me to call him.

Pipeline:

Our pipeline states are NJ, NY, PA, and FL.

Major Needs:

Defensive Tackle: With Page leaving, I really need some new blood here or I'm really gonne be in trouble. I probably need two good players.

Fullback: Same old story.

Wide Receiver: I'm not in need of an elite player, but I only have four returning WR's.

Guard: At right guard I have two JR's and I need someone to groom under them.

Tackle: Not happy with my starter or depth at RT.

Strong Safety: Haven't had too much luck here. Not sure about my developing guy and my starter isn't great either.

Minor Needs:

QB
RB
OLB
FS

2013 Week One:

Recruiting:

I took an agressive approach to this recruiting year. We have a few 5* recruits who have us in their top ten, and the majority of our targets are 4*'s.

So to get things underway, I take the usual approach and find the players who have us listed as their #1 and offer them a scholarship.

And we get very lucky! Two wide receivers have committed to us!

4* WR Cantrell
4* WR Robinson

The next thing I'm going to do is try and get recruits that have me in their Top 3 to put me at #1. Then I will make them an offer and maybe they will accept on the spot.

With two hours left, I went through my need positions and spent some time with guys I liked.

#10 Rutgers (0-0) @ Florida Atlantic (0-0)

Here we go! Let's kickoff the 2013 season!

A convincing win. Carpenter...well. I think 12 for 17, 272 yards, 5 TD's and 1 INT is a good way to start your NCAA career.

Mills picked up where left off, running 19 times for 132 yards and 2 TD's.

Final Score: Rutgers 63, Florida Atlantic 3

2013 Week Two:

Recruiting:

A few players bumped us up to #1, but we had no luck when we offered them a scholly.

I offered a few more players scholarships, but only players that I feel I need to throw everything at.

Not the best week in the world, but there is still plenty of time. It's still a weird period because you are trying to weed out the players that you don't have a chance at/don't think will be interested in you.

Huge game.

And a huge win! We took an early lead and never let up. We went into halftime up 21-6.

Carpenter wasn't as good, going 14 of 25 for 17 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. But Mills...this guy is just unreal. 32 carries, 243 yards, and 4 TD's.

Carpenter had a rough game, throwing 2 INT's, but our running game picked up the slack. We had a tough day of injuries though. Nothing too serious except RT Harris is out 7 weeks with a foot stress fracture. Shit.

Final Score: Rutgers 59, Virginia 13

2013 Week Seven:

Recruiting:

Here comes the big update. I hope you are ready!

At quarterback, we are doing excellent. It's not the biggest need, but when I had the chance to get 5* QB Scott Ford from good ol' Mississippi, I had to look into it. A few weeks later, and he now has us as #1. We have a convincing lead over the next school.

Running back is similar. Not a huge need but I'd like to get a guy. I have two RB's on my list, both 4*'s, and we are #1 for both of them.

Fullback is less impressive. Two 2* recruits. I'm pretty far behind for my top guy but my second choice has us #1.

At WR, we're looking for future replacements to our two SR starters. I've already gotten hard committments from two 4*'s, but I have two more 4*'s and a 5* who have me number one. I'm pretty much going to exclusively go after the 5* now.

At TE, I'm in a tight race with LSU for Mississipi recruit, 4* Joe Holmes. I regret spending so much time with him, but he has us at #1 and I'll continue to try and get him here, but I won't go overboard.

I have a convincing lead over Texas for 4* T Justin Carey. I have a lead, but a small lead, on 4* G Scott Roberts from PA. Maryland is right behind me.

At center, Cruz hasn't gotten any attention as USF and Memphis have pulled away.

At DE, 4* James Manning has narrowed his choices down to 3, but has me 5th. He wants to visit, so I'll throw him a bone and let him come hang out. Ya never know what could happen.

At DT, which is a huge need for me, it's looking pretty good. 4* DT Dan Dukes from NJ isn't convinced yet. He has us at #1, but Maryland is right there. 4* DT Ryan Black likes us much more than his #2 school, WVU.

CB is where I have another 5* recruit. He has us at #1, but Florida St. is right there behind us. At FS, 4 Brad Ratliff loves us and is ready to visit, and 5* JUCO athlete Chris Ford has us at #3, but we're right there behind Auburn and Georgia.

So anyway, for this week the first thing I want to do is schedule some more visits. I currently have 7 players visiting this week but want to get the other players in as well.

After that, I just spent some time with players who may have us as #1 but have other teams very close behind.

Huge upset. Carpenter went 19 of 29 for 157 yards with 2 TD's and 1 INT. Mills ran 18 times for 104 yards. DT Page had 2 sacks on defense. This is really dissapointing.

To kick things off, we see that 5* ATH Chris Ford has bumped us up to #2 and is ready for a visit. We'll definitely spend some major time with him this week.

But bad news as we scroll down. 5* CB Donald Brown, who has us #1 last week, has committed to FSU. That one realy hurts.

No big news other than that.

No commitments this week.

This week is another fairly big visiting week for us. As of now, we have four players visiting but a few more will be invited.

5* ATH Chris Ford now has us at #1!

Now I'm hoping to get a few extra WR's so I can convert them to CB, so I spend some time with them.

4* DT Dan Dukes has us at #1, but Maryland is basically tied with us. I'm gonna spend some major time with him this week to seal the deal.

That really sucks. My only other tackle on the board is a 3* and we're far from a sure thing to get him. Damn it. I added two OT's who haven't gotten too much attention.

I do like the guys I added and I may have a shot at them. Oh well.

I'm in a hell of a battle with LSU for 4* TE Joe Holmes. I got in a good 3 pitches with him in only 30 minutes.

The running game was where it was at today. Mills ran for 107 yards, Mitchell ran for 92 yards, and our QB Carpenter, who I forgot to tell you has a good set of wheels, ran for 140 yards on 7 carries! This guy has a good shot at the Heisman in a few years if he can keep improving in the passing game.

On defense, both OLB's, Alvarez and Adams, had a sack AND an interception. Nice.

Woot! Well we got one of our 4* DT's, Dan Dukes. This is a big signing as it allows us to spread the time around even more.

We also got a soft committment from 5* QB Scott Ford, 4* TE Joe Holmes, 4* DT Ryan Black, and 4* G Scott Roberts.

We also lost four players, but no one that I was even really going after any more.

Everything else goes well, but I've very worried about OT. The two guys I added haven't responded by adding me to their Top 10, but I've had extra time every week so I won't give up yet.

Very big game this week.

And we can't pull of the win, even though we are the better team. They scored a TD on their final drive putting them up by 7. With only 46 seconds, we couldn't get the ball down the field.

How did we not win this game? We outperformed them statistically in every category except pasing yards. They had FOUR turnovers, we had one. They had two INT's, we had none. We ran for 222 yards, they ran for 84.

Fuck.

2013 Week Thirteen:

Recruiting:

YEESSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!

5* QB Scott Ford has committed to Rutgers!!!!!

We also had two more very good committments. 4* DT Ryan Black and 4* G Scott Roberts will be attending Rutger next season!

Some bad news is that 4* CB Derrick Harris has soft-committed to Notre Dame. I think we still have a chance at him.

First thing I did this week was move some recruits that are no longer interested or are just out of our reach to the bottom of the board.

I also moved some players up that need that extra boost.

Other than that, no news to report.

#16 North Texas (10-0) @ #18 Rutgers (8-2)

A tough win, but a win. North Texas is a good team but have played a very easy schedule and we were just too tough for them.

Carpenter was bad, going 12 of 32. Mills was great and ran for 152 yards. Archie had a solid game catching 3 passes for 99 yards.

On defense, Page picked up 2 more sacks.

Final Score: Rutgers 34, North Texas 27

2013 Week Fourteen:

Recruiting:

No committments when we start the week. That always worries me when we're near the end of the season.

When I open up our board, I see that 4* CB Derrick Harris has committed to Notre Dame. That sucks, but I think I'll be converting some WR's to CB.

I then see that 4* TE Joe Holmes has flip flopped once again. He soft committed to LSU, then soft committed to us, and now he's back with LSU. What a jerk.

I spent a ton of time with Holmes and got in plenty of pitches but he was mad I kept him for so long.

With four hours left after going through, I spent the rest of the time on the two tackles I added a while ago. I also added a few more recruits and gave them scholarships.

Recruiting:

Well, I've given up on the tackles.

TE Holmes hasn't flip flopped back yet, but this is my last chance before the off-season to make sure he doesn't commit to LSU.

This is my last chance to sway a lot of guys, so I make sure I speak to every player who doesn't have us in a big lead.

vs.

#14 Rutgers Scarlet Knights (10-2) vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (8-4)

Lee Picks: ND
Kirk Picks: RU

Notre Dame: B+ OVR, A- OFF, B DEF
Rutgers: B+ OVR, B+ OFF, B+ DEF

The game was pretty even, and we went into the 4th quarter up by 4, 24-20.

4 minutes into the 4th, ND threw a 7 yard pass for a TD, putting them up 27-24.

A couple of drives later, we got the ball back, moved it down the field, and got to the 1 yard line. Mills pounded it in, putting us ahead 31-27.

But on ND's final drive, with 32 seconds left, Notre Dame's QB threw a 10 yard pass for a touchdown.

We couldn't tie it up.

Carpenter went 10 of 14 for 141 yards and a TD. Mills final college game was solid. He ran 24 times for 121 yards and 3 TD's.

Fred Page finished his collegiate career nicely as well, sacking ND's QB twice and also finishing the game with 5 tackles for a loss.

Notre Dame lost three fumbles, and we had no turnovers. Can't lose games like that.

Final Score: Notre Dame 34, Rutgers 31

vs.

#1 Texas Longhorns vs. #2 BYU Cougars

Lee Picks: Texas
Kirk Picks: Texas

BYU: C OVR, C+ OFF, C+ DEF
Texas: B+ OVR, B OFF, A- DEF

The Longhorns were national champions five times in their history, their most recent win in 2010. BYU, on the other hand, has only been on top once, in 1984.

But this year is all that matters. Texas is the heavy favorite, but you can't count out the undefeated Cougars. Texas has beaten three teams this year that finished in the Top 25. The Cougars? Only one, and they ended #25.

Both teams are healthy, so no one has an excuse.

Let's kick this one off!

The first quarter started with a BYU touchdown 5 minutes into the game. On their next drive, they stalled on the 7 yard line and kicked a 24 yard field goal, puttting them up 10-0. Texas felt the pressure, but with 0:15 left in the 1st, Texas QB Smith hit T. Williams for an 18 yard TD, bringing Texas right back into the game.

In the 2nd, BYU had the ball with 11:51 left. After running a pretty conservative offense, BYU's QB Cunningham faked a handoff and got ready to unlead a bomb. And it was caught in stride for a 40 yard TD! BYU was in control 17-7.

The rest of the half was uneventful until 1:24 was left, when Texas got their own 40 yard TD strike! The half ended at 17-14, BYU ahead. Could they pull off the upset?

The third quarter was exactly what Texas needed. With 8:24 left, their QB hit a receiver in the back of the endzone from 7 yards out. Texas was ahead, and after stopping BYU, they got the bll back and with 2 minutes left the charged down the field. But in an incredible goal line stand, Texas stalled at the 2 yard line and had to settle for a FG, putting them ahead 24-17. The third ended, and momentum was in Texas' favor.

BYU continued their drive as the 4th quarter started up. A couple plays in, BYU was at the Texas 15, and Cunningham hit a receiver on a fade route for the touchdown! Johnson made the extra point and the game was tied.

Texas got the ball back and was determined to get ahead again. They quickly marched down the field, and on the 7 yard line, they handed redshirt freshmen running back Underwood the ball and he fought his way in. Texas was up again, but they weren't done. Just over two minutes later, they had the ball again and connected on a 17 yard TD pass. Texas was pulling away, and time was running out for BYU.

So with 6:20 left in the 2013 National Championship game, BYU needed two TD's. The drive didn't look good.

With 2:15 left, BYU had only made it to their own 41 yard line. But then, a break. Texas' defensive back slipped, leaving Simpson all alone. Cunningham chucked him the ball. Simpson made the catch, juked a safety, and scored a touchdown! They were hafway there. Now they needed to get the ball back.

With all of their timeouts left, BYU's run defense had to step up....and they did. With 30 seconds left, BYU got the ball back. They had one more shot to tie the game. A few missed plays, and now they really had one more shot. 4th down. 15 seconds left.

Cunningham dropped back...he had all the time in the world with only two rushers coming. Nine defensive backs were in the game, all trying to stop what would need to be an absolute miracle.

With the deep passed completely covered, Cunningham tossed a short pass to the running back in the middle of the field. He caught it and passed the first down marker, but he needed to get out of bounds fast or he was toast. He darted for the sideline, but in a moment of sheer stupidity or brilliance, he pitched the ball back to a linemen behind him. The 312 pounder was shocked to have the ball. With defenders converging on him, he pitched the ball back to the quarterback! And in what seemed like a planned play from the beginning, the Quarterback threw a dart on a 90 degree angle across the field to a wide open wide receiver! He was the only man on that side of the field! He darted down the field. With no time left, he HAD to score. He had only one man to beat.

The 20...the 15....the defender, a speedy DB, was coming in close, but he was winded.

The 10....the 5....both players leaped toward the corner of the endzone. The receiver used every inch of his arm length to stretch the ball across the plane of the endzone.

TOUCHDOWN!! BYU TIED IT UP! THEY SCORED 13 POINTS IN THE LAST TWO MINUTES OF THE GAME!!

They still needed the XP. And they got it. We were headed to overtime at 38-38.

BYU won the toss and elected to defend first. On 1st and 10 Texas was stuffed at the LOS on a run.

2nd and 10. Texas' QB dropped back and threw a laser over the middle of the field. It looked like the receiver had a good chance to catch it, but it deflected off his arm into the air! The BYU linebacker dove and caught it! An interception!

BYU started their possesion with a nice run of 13 yards, putting the on the 17 yard line. On 1st and 10, the QB made a bad decision and almost threw an interception but it was just over the head of the defender.

2nd and 10. All they needed was a field goal, but they wanted to get closer. But when the QB dropped back, you knew they would wait to do that on 3rd down. It was clear they were going for the touchdown. They had two WR's going towards the corner of the endzone. AND THE PASS FLOATS OVER THE DEFENDER INTO THE ARMS OF HARRISON! TOUCHDOWN! TOUCHDOWN! BYU HAS WON THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!

Final Score: BYU 44, Texas 38--OT

What a game. As you know, some of the play by play stuff I made up but everything else really happened. BYU really scored two TD's within the last two minutes, both on pass plays of 57+ yards. Unbelievable upset!

Players Leaving

Heh. These players are funny. Look who wants to declare the for the draft already, after one season of playing. The QB Carpenter. I'd like him to stick around for one more year so I can redshirt the 5* recruit I got.

The loss of Mills is obviously terrible, but at least I was expecting it. I'm very concerned to see both of my centers leaving. Ray is graduating, but Ware is my backup who I was planning on starting this year. He's gotten a lot of playing time because he's the backup at every spot on the line. I need him back or I'll most likely have a walk-on playing center or someone who's not a natural center.

Page has been great for us, and it's very sad to see him go. We're losing some impact players so I'm kind of nervous.

Results

First things first. I need a QB for next year because I really, really don't want to start my new 5* QB recruit. I spend 20 minutes with him. Does he really think entering the draft after one year as a starter is a good idea? Of course not. I convince him to stay, and he tells me that he still has a ton to accomplish here. Of course you do, Marcus.

Next guy is the center Travis Ware. With Ray leaving, I need Ware to replace him. I have no other centers on the team and haven't recruited any. I spend 30 minutes with him. He tells me he wants to talk to his parents.

So I move on to Wilson. He's been good for us. He had two picks last year and really seems to make playes. He forced and recovered 3 fumbles last year. It's always good to have guys like that. I spent 20 minutes with him, and he tells me that he wants to come back next year. Woo!

Now it's back to Ware. I want him on the team next year badly, so I spend another 30 minutes with him. He's still undecided, saying that one day he wants to stay, the next day he wants to leave. Come on buddy. I need you here. Another 15 minutes later, and he's ready to go. Fuck!

QB Marcus Carpenter. 6'3", 212 lbs. SO(RS). 88 OVR - Pro Draft (Staying)
C Travis Ware. 6'2", 272 lbs. SO(RS). 83 OVR - Pro Draft (Leaving)
CB Alex Wilson. 5'11", 195 lbs. JR(RS). 84 OVR - Pro Draft (Staying)

2014 Off-Season:

Off-Season Recruiting:

Week One:

I've been looking forward to this since we finished our regular season recruiting. I have 23 players left on my board with only 18 scholarships left to give out. This should be an interesting five weeks.

First thing I need to do is add a center or two to the board. Fuckin' Ware...Ugh.

Just thinking about strategy...I'm willing to take some risks when making promises. I've built up my integrity level high enough to let me make any promise I'd like.

With the way we've been playing, I can promise every recruit good national exposure. And if I need to, I can promise a spot in the Top 10 within two years. I'll try to only do that if the battle for a recruit is really close.

So with that in mind, I start off by setting up some visits with our top recruits.

I get to TE Joe Holmes, a 4* recruit who, if you missed it, has been flip-flopping between our school and LSU. He's soft commited three times now, first to LSU, then to Rutgers, then to LSU again. I want him here so I'm willing to make a few promises that are risky. I told him that I wouldn't sign another player of the same position before his first year. I have two nice tight ends right now and I highly doubt that I'll need another for a year or two. Plus he's the only TE I'm going after right now. I promised him good national exposure and also promised a game in his home state. He is from Mississippi.

Week Two:

Nice! We open up the week with eight committments!

We welcome to following players to the Rutgers football team!

5* ATH Chris Ford
4* WR Kenny Flowers
4* RB Thomas Cochran
4* RB Bryant Harrell
4* TE Joe Holmes
3* T Steve Thompson
3* G Ed Jones
3* OLB Drew Johnson

I'm pumped about the junior college transfer Chris Ford. Not sure where he will play yet...he may even redshirt this year but he will not hurt the team, I can promise you that.

And look who else! Joe Holmes has flip flopped again, but this time it's a final decision. Also, WR Flowers de-committed to join us. Other than that, no surprises but we're happy to have all of them here.

So I start off the week finishing up any leftover visits. And with only one, we went through the list to make some final pushes.

Week Three:

We get the word that only one players has committed this week. 4* WR Mike Robertson from Texas is a Scarlet Knight!

A few more players want to visit us, so I set them up with a trip to the campus this week.

Week Four:

Nice! We land a few more recruits this week including 4* FS Brad Ratliff! Here's the full list.

4* FS Brad Ratliff
3* QB Robert Ryan
3* DT Ben Miller
3* FB Robert Jean

Unfortunately, the center we started going after never bit and committed to Maryland. We'll see what we can do there when we get into camp.

I have 7 guys left on the list and only 5 scholarships left. I have to make the tough decision of cutting two players from the board.

The first guy I cut from the list is 3* JUCO WR Brandon Clarke. I have a ton of WR's already and have two 4*'s still on the board. The other guy is gonna be 2* CB Nick Cooper. I'm planning on converting a bunch of these WR's to CB, and they'll be better than a natural 2* CB.

Week Five:

This is our final week to make any final pushes, and we have four players left to sign. This week, 3* ATH Dedrick Spinner signed with us.

I'm worried about 4* WR Chris Pullen. He still isn't ready for a visit and I'm worried he's not going to be eligible to sign with us.

We advance the week, and our worries came true. Chris Pullen wasn't on the list.

We did get the other three recruits:

4* WR Eric Royal
4* OLB Stanley Broussard
3* DE Derek Whitmore

But when we open our board, we see that Pulled wasn't ineligible, he just decided to committ to Tennessee! We had such a big lead but I guess he saw how many WR's were recruiting and didn't think he had a chance to make an impact. Wow!

WR Flowers to CB
ATH Ford to CB

2013/2014 Recruiting Review

Quote:

Major Needs:

Defensive Tackle: With Page leaving, I really need some new blood here or I'm really gonne be in trouble. I probably need two good players.

Fullback: Same old story.

Wide Receiver: I'm not in need of an elite player, but I only have four returning WR's.

Guard: At right guard I have two JR's and I need someone to groom under them.

Tackle: Not happy with my starter or depth at RT.

Strong Safety: Haven't had too much luck here. Not sure about my developing guy and my starter isn't great either.

Minor Needs:

QB
RB
OLB
FS
C

Here is what we said our need were at the start of the season. I got two 4* DT's and a 3* DT that looks great, so I'm happy there. I got a fullback, but I also got a tight end which allowed me to move a previous TE to FB, so I feel like it's a net success. I got a ton of Wide Receivers, including a 5* player. Tackle was a dissapointment, but I did well at guard. I couldn't land a SS.

As for the minor needs, I kicked ass at QB by picking up a 5* dual threat QB. I got two 4*'s at running back and also got a few good OLB's. Got a 4* FS, but missed out on center and it ended up being a major need.
