1867 Off-season thread
So we'll do draft ('66) tonight and sim to start of FA. I suppose I'll do the draft lottery for the past season at some point this week too.

Here's the draft order for the teams outside of the lottery:
11. Kauai 12. Cuyahoga 13. Gettysburg 14. Memphis 15. Chicago 16. Washington 17. Columbus 18. Winnemucca 19. St. Louis 20. Brooklyn |

Here's the damage. A few more balls distributed to the lower teams, thanks to expanded playoffs making the lottery pool this year slightly smaller.

I'm going to realign the NL slightly for the upcoming season.
Columbus is moving to the NL West and Portland is moving to the NL East. It's mostly a parity thing, the NL East has the highest concentration of "competitive" owners and so, it seems to make sense to do it that way. I realize Portland is in Oregon for game purposes, but...that's okay. |

Maybe Portland can move to Portland, Maine for geographical purposes.

I'm just going to rename the divisions to make them non-geographic to solve that issue for next year.

Just Checking in
The Boston Blue Sox are no more, their owners are fed up of losing 100 games a season. They have been seduced by a consortium who have bought them out and relocated them to New York where they will play in the SLOP AL Eastern Division as the New York Skyliners. Fans in New York are are excited about getting a second SLOP team to replace the New York Americans that left in 1846 |

Oh right, mavericktango is taking over the expansion New York Skyliners who will replace the Boston Blue Sox in the AL starting this season. As he's said, it's the first explicitly New York team (with apologies to Brooklyn) since my New York Americans folded and moved their guts to Winnemucca, Nevada. Nigel is an OOTP vet who plays in a lot of writing intensive leagues, so we're hoping fast-sim is a breath of fresh air for him and also that he lends his talents to our immersive playpen.
Welcome aboard. Last edited by Young Drachma : 01-09-2013 at 12:17 PM. |

Also, note that Dave Petty is not actually a free agent, even though he's in the pool, he should have been put on Gettysburg's major league roster. So I will need to fix that for tonight's file.

I will be trying to maintain a log of the Skyliners highs & lows in This thread in the OOTP Dynasty boards
No promises but I shall try and it would be nice to have a record of the entire franchise |

Got a noob question. Since we have a limited number of Free Agent sims, what's the "fast-sim" strategy for signing FA's? Just throw a bunch of offers out there, and hope it works out, or risk not signing enough guys at a certain position by being "picky"?

I'd say best strategy is to pick one or two guys you want to sign and bid high on them. No sense blanket bidding on guys and trying to lowball them. Other thing you can do is find secondary and tertiary FAs and blanket bid on them. They won't be as good but if you're looking for quantity, that is the way to do it. If you want quality you need to go the former route.

My advice is to know what you want to do with your team. If you can pick up a few quality guys each year, you can be contending in no time. So it makes sense to isolate your one or two star guys you want if you're in a contending mood. If you're going to build a more organic way, then wolvie's advice about 2nd and 3rd tier guys is critical.
There are almost ALWAYS those kinds of role type guys on the market that you can pick up, so I'd use FA1 to isolate the stars you want and making great offers on a guy you REALLY want. Not EVERYONE signs during FA1, so you might not get him, but you want to deter those "must haves" from signing elsewhere. FA2 tomorrow night is the critical sim where pretty much everyone (with some exceptions) will sign, so you need to for sure make your best offers then. The last sim is basically to the start of Spring Training and that's just picking up whoever you need leftover or post-trade signings and the such. Occasionally, there will be a 4th FA phase in-between the 2nd and 3rd, but again the 1st two are really the ones that are where 95% of the work gets done. But so long as you know what you want your team's 5 year plan is, you can usually just offer guys with that in mind. Last edited by Young Drachma : 01-09-2013 at 10:57 PM. |

Eusebio Salavisa of Las Vegas is just 8 hits away from breaking Hall of Famer Taikan Hatsutori's all-time record of 3874 hits. He's 42 years old, but still producing as one of the few FRANCHISE players left in SLOP. He's average 186 hits per year. If he does that this year, he'll break the 4000 hit mark, as he's only 133 hits away from breaking that threshold as well.
It's fun watching him continue to perform at a high level and with all of the acquisitions that Vegas got this off-season, maybe a playoff swan song is in order? |

I added a year to Minor League Free Agency, so now they're eligible after 5 years, rather than after 4 years as it's been for the past few years.

Tuesday, January 1st, 1867 We wish JR well on his new team. He was instrumental in bringing a championship to Gettysburg, but we felt that his skills were declining, and with an influx of younger talent and Harman's increasing salary, our best move was to not offer him arbitration this season. |

Fatigue gets reset before the start of the regular season, since with guys having played Winter League and in some cases spring training right after, it ensures they're fresh for opening day.

Very annoyed that you didn't take imports before producing the new file I spent three hours setting up all my minors just right, download the new file and it's all wiped out
Luckily I guessed there was a good chance of that happening so I wrote out my line-ups but I've still got to spend an age redoing all the promotions / demotions & lineups |

Your export isn't wiped out. Exports only get wiped out if I advance the sim date. I didn't advance the sim date, alas your export will work as normal.

The problem with me taking exports before I upload is, if both teams involved in a trade have exported, the moves I've made (aka trading their new players) will be reversed and when they get the file, their new players will be free agents and I lose their contract info and so I have to fix all of that.
