Roster review/preview:
This is the most talented Nevada roster in the history of the program. Wether or not that will show up in the win/loss column is unknown. For all the talent they have, the leader of the offense will be a first year player and might be a true freshman. What is really scary is that almost all of the starters will return next year. Offense: QB Joe Broussard (RS Soph, 6'1", 209, 42/71) is the most prepared to play, but Patrick Jurgensen (True freshman, 6'1" 200,19/76) has a tremendous amount of talent that can pay dividends with some reps. The staff would love to redshirt Pat, but with only two other scholarship QB's on the roster, he should wind up on the active roster regardless of him starting or not. The third sholarship player is RS Freshman Vincent William (6'0", 193,33/67) who will probably wind up third on the roster. The most likely scenario here is Jurgensen getting mop-up time early, then getting a chance to make a run at the position later in the year or next spring. Broussard has one advantage over the other two QB's, he's a solid runner where the other two are pure pocket passers. RB For all of the questions at QB, there is an embarassment of riches at the RB spot. The leader is Hardy Simon (RS Jr., 5'10" 215, 75/75) who is a reliable, tough back with good speed and excellent vision. Behind him is RS Freshman Stanley Curtis (6'2" 227, 70/73). Curtis would be starting on most rosters, and will make Simon earn his starting spot. Curtis is outstanding on third down, and could wind up being the third down specialist in his first year on the active roster. The forgotten man in this group is the versatile Alex Cousin (RS Soph, 5'9" 200, 64/68). Cousin kept the offense rolling just fine when he was in for Simon last season. The one guy who will have a hard time getting touches is senior Brant Foley (5'11" 211, 57/66). Foley is a quietly consistent player and sets a great example for the younger, more talented backs on the roster. The buzz of summer workouts was surrounding true freshman Marvin Malley (5'11" 210, 58/98), who appears to be a superstar in the making. Marvin would step on most campuses and be an immediate starter, or at least a backup, but with the position being loaded he's going to sit on the bench this year and work on getting bigger, stronger, and faster. FB RS Soph Quinten Fulton (5'11" 231, 44/95) will probably take over the FB spot after showing excellent knowledge of the offense and great work habits in the summer, even though classmate Jerry Wetnight (5'10" 222, 59/67) is more prepared to play in the beginning of the season. The coaching staff love Fulton's potential, and think he can have an excellent season after having the experience of a few games. True freshman Wesley Cash (6'1" 220, 39/64) will probably man the 3rd active FB spot on the roster, but like Fulton, Cash has exciting potential. TE Redshirt freshman Tracy Quarles (6'5" 251) impressed the coaches in spring ball and has the starting TE job locked up. He's not going to make anyone forget Roosevelt Clemons right away, but he could wind up with an even better career by the time he graduates. 6'2" 233 pound Idahoan Dave Rigsby appears to be a solid bet for #2 on the depth chart, and is the hard working, driven type of player that the coaches love working with. Glen Botkin (RS Jr., 6'4" 266, 36/94) will be third on the depth chart. True freshman Freddie Fahey (6'4" 248, 23/34) was brought in as a big physical WR prospect, but after fall practices the staff likes his potential at TE. WR Both starting recievers return for Nevada. During the offseason RS Jr. Jeffrey Ramirez (6'1" 194 88/88) took a huge leap in his game, and absolutely tore up spring workouts. The Montana native was a demon in the strength and conditioning program, and is a definite contender for all-conference honors if the new starting QB can hit the ground running. Opposite of him will be "Big Play" Bob Dunne (6'3" 208, 67/77) , who has been working hard on concentration and consistency. While 6 drops in 52 receptions isn't disasterous, Dunne has focused this offseason on becoming a more reliable reciever. The backup order hasn't been determined yet, and three recievers will be chosen from four candidates. True Senior Deion Burton (5'11" 208, 33/51) has averaged an excellent 18.9 yards per catch in very limited action. True Soph Dustin Palmer (6'2" 217, 39/65) was excellent in very limited action last year, catching 72% of the passes thrown in his direction (targeted 7 times, 5 catches). Redshirt freshman J.C. Joyner (6'0" 194, 32/63) has amazing potential, especially considering he didn't show up on any rivals.com national, positional, or state lists, and he could be the clear cut #3 WR by the end of the season. Super recruit Ted Jolley (True Freshman, 5'11" 189 33/74) is another top flight member of last year's outstanding recruiting class, but Ted will probably be best served by a redshirt year to get stronger and more familiar with the system. Walk on Walt Booker (True Sr., 6'1" 222, 10/22) might only see the field during scrub time this year, but will graduate having caught a 61 yard touchdown pass last year - his only catch in 2042. C RS Junior Skip Booker (6'3" 293, 54/72) and RS Freshman Andre Henry (6'4" 282, 54/71) are in an absolute dead heat for the position, but it's obvious the coaches like Henry's condition better. Henry spent his redshirt year in the weight room and under the guidance of the strength & conditioning coaches and has worked himself into great shape. The real key comes in game conditions though, and if the winner of this position battle (Henry most likely) isn't getting the job done then the coaches won't hesitate to bring in the other. You have to feel bad for true junior C Rico Metzler (6'5" 304, 43/83), who started every game as a freshman but slid into a backup role last year, and appears to be a third stringer this year. Metzler very well could redshirt because outgoing Sr. C.J. Watanabe (6'0" 292, 26/67) can provide solid depth. G 6'3" 292 pound Doug Whitmore (RS Jr., 68/77) is a lock to start one of the guard positions, and safe money is on Lance Gardner (true sr., 6'2" 286, 50/58) to start the other. True Senior Max Fulcher will be the primary backup to both sides, and behind him is RS freshman Desmond Heckathorn (6'4" 271, 8/48). True Freshman Archie Sanford (6'5" 294, 28/100) will redshirt. T Cary Ballard (RS Jr., 6'8" 326,80/81) seems like the perfect type to be a dominating pass blocker, and while he is an excellent pass blocker he really shines when he can line up and knock helmets in support of the run game. Toby McGregor (RS Soph., 6'5" 319, 38/54) has reported out of shape and will probably be passed over for the starting RT spot by weight room fanatic Jay Carpenter (RS Fr., 6'5" 275, 36/75). While Carpenter is a bit on the lean side, he reported in terrific condition and only helped himself during the summer sessions. Jeff Snyder is an excellent backup. P/K True Junior punter Tim Skipper (6'1" 196, 79/79) and true freshman kicker Marcus Moss (5'11" 177, 19/55) have the jobs locked up.

Defensive preview:
DE Team physicians think Mo Grasmanis (6'4" 255, 85/95) is 100%, and if he can pick up where he left off before his injury last season he will be the star of the defense. Opposite of him will most likely be RS freshman Nicky South (6'2" 266, 36/93) after South had an excellent spring and summer. The reliable Buddy Heinz (RS Soph, 6'4" 257, 35/35) and the overachieving Mike Turner (True Senior, 5'10" 244, 25/40) will provide depth, and super prospect Tony Harmon (True Fr., 6'4" 246, 28/81) will redshirt. DT Andre Witt (RS Jr., 6'2" 268, 65/65) is the anchor of the line, but the coaches are excited about RS freshman Ronnie Vanderjagt (6'0" 279, 56/96) getting on the field a lot, and possibly getting time at DE in Nevada's base 50 defense. Outgoing Sr. Harry Kemp (40/72) will provide depth, and RS Jr. Kennedy Sisk (6'4" 310, 26/64) will probably get on the field very infrequently, and true soph T.J. Carlin (6'3" 273, 22/63) and true freshman Russell Gould (6'3" 257, 20/72) will both redshirt. ILB A pair of outgoing seniors in Deron Gilmore (6'3" 223, 57/57) and Robert Shackelford (6'4" 248, 38/78) have locked down the starting ILB spots this offeseason. Gilmore is a seasoned vet with 28 starts, while Shackelford will be starting for the first time. True senior Bucky Flowers (6'2" 233, 21/52) will be redshirted and True freshman Ross Coker (6'2" 217, 25/75) will immediately work backup duty while true freshman Neil Stancil (6'1" 223, 10/77) will redshirt. Flowers will redshirt to prevent ILB by being manned entirely by redshirt and true freshmen next year. OLB Irv Null (RS Jr., 5'11" 219, 81/89) is the leader and playmaker of the linebacking corps and opposite of him RS Soph Roman Buckner (6'1" 238, 59/78) had an excellent offseason and solidified his starting spot. Jamal Glenn (RS Soph., 6'1" 230, 40/57) will be the primary backup and outgoing seniors James Zellner (6'3" 261, 35/51) and Ethan Carey (6'1" 241, 20/71) round out the active roster. True freshman Tito Halas (6'0" 211, 12/51) will redshirt. CB Four solid Cornerbacks vied for two spots over the spring. Redshirt freshman Chuck Abrams (5'10" 174, 40/92) and outgoing senior Kelly Hall (6'0" 197, 40/66) appear to have the starting spots locked up, and Oliver Shwartz (6'1" 193, 42/52) and Cris Hines (True Sr.,5'9" 197, 43/43) will provide solid depth. Redshirting will be true freshmen Deon Nichols (6'1" 186, 28/77), Sedrick Hotchkiss (6'0" 169, 27/54) and Bracey Powell (6'0 203, 12/55). S Redshirt freshman Ray Pugh (6'0" 202, 64/90) blew away the coaches in the spring, and looks like he could wind up being one of the best safeties to ever play for Nevada before he graduates. Next to him will be fellow Californian Carlos Bruce (5'11" 205, 58/78). Outgoing Senior Vernon Atkins (6'2" 199, 41/66) and RS Soph Rondell Dwyer (5'10" 204, 37/71) provide solid depth.

WR Jeffrey Ramirez (88/98 overall, 98, 98, 77, 82, 98, 29, 98, 68, 98, 95) Ramirez is poised for a big season, but will have to rely on an unproven QB. OLB Irv Null (81/89 overall, 91/100, 91/100, 62/73, 79/90, 31/35, 85/96) Null had a very good offseason, and looks like a force this year. RB Hardy Simon (75/75 overall, 65, 87, 77, 100, 82, 74, 68, 72, 76, 44, 45) Simon will get a lot of touches until the new QB gets comfortable. Newcomers to watch: S Ray Pugh (64/90 overall, 66/84, 63/76, 77/100, 96, 61/91, 61/86, 78, 45/63) Ray has thrilled the coaches with his playmaking ability. DE Nicky South (36/93 overall, 32/60, 43/63, 45) South is still very raw but has amazing potential.

Recruiting Needs:
QB: (2) Currently there are three scholarship QB's on the roster, and the staff likes to carry 4. At least one needs to be signed this year, since the other three return next season. RB: (0) RB is pretty set. The staff will probably look for a big time RB but don't feel the need to sign one this year. FB: (1) Two of the three FB's on the roster are in the same class. The staff would like to bring in another FB to spread out the roster. TE: (0) The staff is comfortable with three TE's and they are carrying four, and since they are comfortable with the talent on hand they probably won't look at TE's. WR: (1) There are 6 WR's on the roster with 1 graduating. Signing a WR isn't a dire need, but this is another position where the coaches will always look to sign playmakers. C: (0) The center position is set, and the staff won't look to sign anyone at the position this year. G: (1-2) Two Guards graduate this year, and one is redshirting, so the coaches are looking to sign one more guard. Ideally, they will sign two this year. T: (1) All players return at T next year, but next year two are graduating so the staff will look to bring one in to redshirt next year. P/K: (0) Both positions are set. DE: (1) Career backup Mike Turner graduates, and the staff feels it's vital to keep the DE position stocked with talent. DT: (0) Nevada is pretty stocked at this position and probably won't sign anyone at DT this year unless it's a big time prospect. ILB: (2) With 2 seniors graduating Nevada is really hurting at ILB, they are hoping to sign two players. OLB: (1) Nevada graduates two OLB's this year, but they are both backups. Nevada will look to sign one more OLB, but it isn't the biggest priority. CB: (1) With three cornerbacks in last year's class redshirting, the staff is looking to sign one. S: (1) One backup player graduates this year and four return, but the staff will probably look to add one more player at Safety. #29 Wisconson at #11 Nevada Nevada will face a new wrinkle in Wisconson's offense, the Wolfpack defense doesn't see the single back offense very often. Wisconson's questionable defensive front could have trouble against a solid Nevada offensive line, especially with Nevada looking to grind the ball out on the ground quite a bit. Recruiting updates: early offers QB Lance Conway (6'2" 199, scouted 75/100) Lance (Sumner, Washington, Sumner HS)has become Nevada's early number one target. The high school senior has thrown for 1,076 yards on 61/94 passing to go with 6 td's and 2 int's. Lance also chipped in 63 rushes for 358 yards and 4 TD's. Lance is currently holding offers from Nevada and South Carolina. WR J.J. Settle (5'11" 182, scouted 59+/100) Settle is an excellent reciever with great hands, hauling in 38 receptions in 5 games for 988 yards and 8 TD's. Settle's other offer is currently Temple, but it's a safe bet that he will have a lot more in the coming weeks. Settle plays for Riverside, California La Serna HS. G Les Ballard (6'7" 298, scouted 99+/100) Ballard is every bit the player and prospect that all-universe Nevada signee Archie Sanford was last year. Les attends Antelope, California Center HS. T Dean Webster (6'6" 287, scouted 98/100) Dean (Farmington, NM, Farmington HS) is listed as the overall #2 prospect in the nation by Rivals.com. DE Rodney Kravitz (6'4" 242, scouted 71+/100) Kravitz (Livingston, CA, Livingston HS) is a pass rushing demon and has posted 6 sacks and 39 tackles in 5 games. CB Al Steude (5'9" 172) Steude (Pittsburg, CA, Pittsburg HS) isn't the typical Nevada recruit at cornerback, standing only 5'9", but the Rivals 100 member (#89 overall) completely shuts down his side of the field and will be recruited by almost everyone. Steude currently holds offers from Nevada, San Jose State, and South Carolina. In Addition, South Florida and Syracuse are on the verge of offering.

Game Action:
It's a gorgeous day for College football here in Reno, Nevada as we get set for the kickoff of what promises to be an exciting game between the Nevada Wolfpack and the Wisconson Badgers. Wisconson wins the toss and elects to recieve. The first Badger drive is a 3 and out however, and on 4th and 1 from the Nevada 16 Wisconson P Alex McElroy sends off a 39 yard punt that Hardy Simon returns 2 yards to the Wolfpack 46. On Nevada's first play, Simon takes the ball and rumbles 28 yards behind the blocking of his massive left tackle Cary Ballard. Since it works so well the first time, they run the same play and the result is another 11 yard gain and another Nevada first down. With the Wisconson defense on their heels, Nevada runs a WR Reverse to Bob Dunne, who goes around left end for another 11 yards and another first down. Tight end Tracy Quarles sealed off with a great block. After a pass is incompleted and a run goes nowhere, a 3rd and 3 pass to Quarles finishes off the drive. 11:44 1st Quarter 7-0 Nevada Wisconson opens the drive with a dive play that goes for 22 yards, and QB Tyrell Wells moves the Badgers offense down the field efficiently down to the Wisconson 29 yard line, but on 4th and 10 Wells is pressured and forced into a bad throw by reserve DT Harry Kemp, giving Nevada the ball on downs. The Wisconson defense is selling out to stop the run now and it works, forcing Nevada into a 3 and out punt that Wisconson gets at their own 21 yard line. The Badgers can't get that first down in three tries either, and send a punt that Nevada handles at their own 39 yard line. Nevada marches down to the Wisconson 6 yard line and the drive stalls, but a huge mental mistake in the form of an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty by Wisconson's defense after a failed 4th and 8 try by Nevada gives the wolfpack a huge first down that turns into 7 point after Joe Broussard finds Bob Dunne streaking down the sideline for a 19 yard TD. 13:33 2nd Quarter 14-0 Nevada Nevada gives Wisconson a gift of their own on a third down with a pass interference call but Wisconson can't move the ball and is forced to punt, which Nevada collects on the Wolfpack 12 yard line. The teams trade punts before a Nevada 4th and 4 attempt on the 35 yard line is thwarted. Wisconson moves the chains a couple of times, including a 3rd and 14 pass to reciever Orlando Garcia, but on a 3rd and 21 play the Wells pass attempt was snatched by Cris Hines, who falls on the ball at the Wolfpack 12 yard line. Joe Broussard hits Dunne for a huge 56 yard gain while the wisconson defense is out of position, but with 11 seconds left on the clock there's not enough time for another play. Halftime 14-0 Nevada Nevada stats: Broussard 9/12 for 128 yards and 2 TD's Simon 9 rushes for 57 yards Simon 4 catches for 34 yards Wisconson stats: Wells 10/17 for 82 yards and 1 Int. Franz 9 rushes for 37 yards Watkins 3 catches for 28 yards 2nd half: Nevada takes the kickoff and marches down the field on the legs of Hardy Simon, who caps off the drive with a 34 yard run off right tackle. 09:53 3rd Quarter 21-0 Nevada The next offensive play for Wisconson is trouble for the Badgers when Carlos Bruce picks off the Wells pass at the Nevada 32. The Wolfpack can't take advantage however, and a 4th and 13 pass attempt from the 27 falls harmlessly to the ground. The Badgers go 3 and out, and Nevada takes over at the Wisconson 41 after a nifty 18 yard Simon return. Nevada moves down to the Wisconson 29 but can't convert the 4th and 12 and Wisconson take over on downs. Wisconson is forced to punt after a 3 and out, but the punt is blocked and and Nevada S Ray Pugh takes it back for a touchdown. Freshman kicker Marcus Moss misses the extra point. 14:13 4th Quarter 27-0 Nevada When it rains it pours, and on 2nd and 13 the Wells pass was picked off by Kelly Hall at the Nevada 40 and returned 7 yards. Nevada can't turn the pick into points however, and the teams trade punts until the end of the game. Final 27-0 Nevada

Recruiting update: More Nevada offers: FB Pat Thomason (6'0" 221, scouted 74+/100) Thomason (San Francisco, CA, El Camino HS) is the kind of guy the Nevada coaches love at Fullback. He comes out of high school as a good runner and an outstanding reciever, and has the physicality the coaches think is essential for teaching a fullback to be a top flight blocker. "It's easier to teach those guys how to block than it is to show them how to be a weapon with the football," a source close to the coaching staff told a rivals.com reporter, "and Thomason is the kind of weapon with the ball that adds an extra dimension to an offense, especially in the red zone." ILB Leland Ellison (6'3" 217, scouted 89+/100) When asked about his star playmaking linebacker, his Prairie Bush (Wa) Prairie HS couldn't stop talking about his playmaking ability. "He makes plays all over the field for us. Sideline to sideline, really. We turn him loose and teams just can't avoid him no matter what they try." Leland, who wants to major in Nuclear Physics, has 51 tackles, 1.5 sacks and 2 int's so far this year. This Rivals.com top 100 member (#90) is considered the sixth best inside linebacking prospect in the country. S Sherman Hetherington (6'1" 178, scouted 70+/100) Sherman (Fair Oaks, CA, Del Campo HS) is an excellent athlete who also starts at point guard for the Del Campo basketball team and averages 18 points and 6 assists per game. "Basketball is my first love, I guess," said Hetherington in a recent Rivals.com update, "but I know my future is on the football field." Hetherington has collected 41 tackles and 1.5 sacks to go with his 9 interceptions, through five games this year. DE Sean Glover (6'1" 222, scouted 85++/100) Glover, the top rated Defensive End in the nation (Rivals) and ninth rated prospect overall, was just too good for the coaches to ignore, but considering Nevada's traditional lack of success recruiting Utah (Glover attends American Fork, UT, American Fork HS) you can't help but think Nevada is a long shot. Glover lists academics and distance as two of his top criterea. Glover also has an offer from South Carolina. DT Corey Fontenot (6'1" 279, scouted 100--/100) Nevada was content with the talent and depth at defensive tackle, but when redshirt freshman safety Orlando cooley approached the coaches and informed them that ex-teammate Fontenot (Moreno Valley, CA, Valley View HS) was seriously interested in the Wolfpack, a written offer accompanied by hand-written letters from the head coach and defensive coordinator were sent out by fed-ex within the hour. Fontenot, the Rivals.com top rated prospect in the country, is a bolt of lightning off the line and has collected 7.5 sacks and 52 tackles in five games this year.

#24 Texas A&M (1-0) at #9 Nevada (1-0) Preview: The Texas A&M Aggies return to Mackay stadium to attempt a repeat of the road upset that they pulled off last year. That upset might have cost Nevada a shot at the championship game, and the Wolfpack remember that loss too well. Players to watch: A&M QB Danny Bridges Bridges didn't have a stunning day on paper last year, but he made a lot of key plays that kept Nevada out of the game. A&M RB Scottie Montgomery Montgomery did have a huge day on paper last year, and on the field, with 36 rushes for 142 yards and 2 TD's. Nevada S Ray Pugh Pugh could be the difference in the game if he can put the stops on Montgomery without letting Bridges throw behind him. Nevada ILB Robert Shackelford Shackelford might not be the most dynamic guy on the Nevada defense, but he's excellent in coverage and big enough (6'4" 248) to match up with physical recieving tight end Bo McKenzie (6'4" 255). Recruiting update: The coaches hit the road and scouted Sumner, Washington QB Lance Conway (Offer) and came away very impressed. Scouting update: 75++/100. Nevada will have big time competition for Conway, who also holds offers from UAB and South Carolina. The coaches have also spent some time in the state of New York scouting players, New York has been very friendly to Nevada in recent years. The coaches also extended an offer to Fremont, California (Mission San Jose HS) Offensive Tackle Jimmy Welch. Welch is a 6'8" 294 mountain of a prospect that offensive coordinator Damon De La Garza thinks could have the most upside of any offensive tackle prospect in the nation. A&M wins the toss and elects to recieve. Marcus Moss kicks a short 48 yarder that Gilbert Outlaw brings back for 21 yards. On the first play from scrimmage, Scottie Montgomery takes the wind out of the stadium with a big 48 yard gain. Montgomery looks like he's about to go the distances until a hustling Irv Null chases him down. The next 3 plays are a little more pedestrian however, and after gaining 9 yards on those plays A&M settles for a 22 yard Mark Benson field goal. 12:17 1st Quarter 3-0 A&M Nevada starts on their own 22. A&M is loading up to stop Simon, but they lay off on a 2nd and 15 play from the 24 and a Joe Broussard pass is picked off by safety Steve Barry at the Nevada 44 yard line. Montgomery reels off a couple of nice runs of 13 and 14 yards, but Nevada finally keys up on Montgomery and after a couple of runs for a loss the desperation fourth and 20 Danny Bridges pass is picked off at the Nevada 17 by Deron Gilmore, who dodges tacklers on his way to an electrifying 83 yard return for a touchdown. What a big play for Gilmore and the defense, it seemed like the fans were expecting something bad to happen until that play. 06:39 1st Quarter 7-3 Nevada Moss gets his leg into the kickoff this time and setinds it back into the end zone. Montgomery takes it out of the end zone but only gets to the 18. On 3rd and 8 from the 14 Bridges hits WR Shane Rose for a 19 yard first down strike, but A&M loses 3 yards in the next three plays and is forced to punt from the 30. Hardy Simon fair catches the ball at the Nevada 28. Broussard moves the team to midfield keyed by a couple of passes to FB Quentin Fulton, but the drive stalls out just past midfield and Nevada is forced to punt. A&M fields the ball at the 20, but a holding call pushes A&M back to the 12. A&M puts together a drive reminiscent of last year's game, with Montgomery breaking off nice runs and Bridges hitting clutch third down passes, until Bridges is intercepted by Linebacker Roman Buckner and returned 14 yards to the A&M 47. The Aggie defense does it's job and holds Nevada without a first down, and gives the ball back to the offense when a 4th down WR reverse oses a yard on 4th and 2 at the A&M 39. Scottie Montgomery busts off two back to back runs of seven yards, but the third time isn't the charm and Montgomery gets demolished by Roman Buckner on the third consecutive carry, forcing a fumble that reserve linebacker Jamal Glenn scoops up and returns five yards to the 50 yard line. Nevada moves down to the 19 yard line, and recieves a huge gift from A&M on a 4th down 36 yard field goal attempt in the form of an A&M roughing the kicker penalty, which gives the wolfpack offense the ball on the 9 yard line with an automatic first down. On the next play Simon bursts up the middle on a quick hitting run play and drives into the end zone. 05:05 2nd Quarter 14-3 Nevada A&M starts with the ball at the 25 yard line and they keep feeding Montgomery, who moves them down to the A&M 44 yard line but Nevada manages to hold on a 3rd down and 10 and forces an A&M punt with a minute left. Nevada runs out the clock, and is happy to go into halftime with a 14-3 lead. A&M's defense continues to do a solid job and forces the Nevada punt after 3 plays, but a nice Tom Skipper 41 yard punt has A&M starting on their own 11 yard line. Montgomery makes a nice first down run, but the next two runs are stuffed and A&M is forced to punt from the 14 yard line. A nice punt and good coverage don't give Nevada an edge in field position, and Nevada takest he ball at their own 31. After a holding pushes them back, Broussard hits Bob Dunne for a nice 25 yard pass giving them the first down. The first down run is stuffed for a 4 yard loss, but on 2nd and long Broussard finds Jeffrey Ramirez behind the defense and tosses him a perfect pass that he grabs in stride and the play goes for 44 yards. Nevada is in scoring territory, but can't get any points after Broussard throws his second pick of the day. A&M CB Ernie Hardaway made a beautiful break on the ball and stole away a sure touchdown pass. Nevada is intent on slowing down Montgomery, and other options open up for A&M but their drive stalls out on the 45 yard line. A short punt gives Nevada the ball on the 24 yard line with 3:34 remaining in the 3rd quarter. Nevada's offense goes backwards, and a short punt from the 18 gives A&M great field position onthe 50 yard line. Nevada's defense has stepped up and forces an A&M 3 and out, and a short 24 yard A&M punt is returned 9 yards by Hardy Simon to the Nevada 28. A&M is still geared up to stuff Simon, and Broussard makes them pay by moving the offense down the field with midrange passes to Dunne and Ramirez. With A&M's defense playing on their heels, Simon takes a draw play 17 yards on 2nd down, then Broussard hits Ramirez for the 6 yard touchdown. 10:31 4th Quarter 21-3 Nevada A&M takes the ball at their own 32, and keeps feeding Montgory. After getting to midfield, Danny Bridges opens things up a bit and hits passes of 9, 28, and 22 yards, the last one for a touchdown to WR Bryan Pettis. A&M tries the two point call, but Montgomery is stuffed at the line by DE Nicky South. 06:46 4th Q 21-9 Nevada After a short 49 yard kickoff was returned to the Nevada 38 yard line, Broussard hits a couple of nice passes to move past midfield. Simon finds a hole in the defense and bursts forward for a nice 11 yard gain to the 37, and on the next play Broussard catches the A&M defense expecting the run and hits Ramirez for a 37 yard TD. 03:42 4th Quarter 28-9 Nevada A&M gets the ball and moves down the field quickly before a Nicky South sack and an offensive holding call push them out of field goal range. #9 Nevada (2-0) at #41 SMU (2-1) Players to watch: Nevada CB Chuck Abrams (4 tackles, 1 TFL, has allowed 2 catches all season) When SMU throws, it will be to excellent WR Reggie Blanchard, and will be Abrams' job to make sure he's not open. Nevada QB Joe Broussard (32/50 for 433 yards, 4 TD's, 2 INT, 155.1 QBR) SMU's not going to get beat by the run, so it will be up to Broussard. SMU RB Josh Henry (61 rushes for 340 yards, 1 TD, 6 catches for 61 yards, 1 TD) SMU will need to keep Nevada's offense off the field and hope to wear out the excellent Nevada defense, and Henry is the guy who will have to shoulder the load. SMU DT Louis Jean (17 tackles, 4 assists, 5 TFL, 1 PB, 3 QB Hurries, 1 FF) Jean is probably the best defender on the team, but if he can't impact the run game the safeties will have to sneak up more in run support. Recruiting Update: New offers: QB Ray Albright (6'5" 208, scouted 71+/100) Rivals.com has this lanky QB from Heber City, Utah (Wasatch HS) ranked as the 15th best QB in the nation and #219 overall. The ponies offense is in reverse after the first two plays net 5 negative yards and the third starts with a false start penalty that puts SMU in a 3rd and 20 from the 10. Les Singleton tosses a nice pass on a post route to Reggie Blanchard, but safety Carlos Bruce helps out his cornerback and smartly knocks it away. Nevada fields the punt on the SMU 47, and on the first play from scrimmage Joe Broussard hits Tracy Quarles for a nice 17 yard gainer that Quarles grabs using all of his 6'5" height. SMU is taken a bit off guard and Nevada lets Broussard move them down the field with his arm until Curtis takes a trap play from the 6 yard line in for a touchdown, the first of his career. 11:26 1st Quarter 7-0 Nevada Drive Stats: 6 plays, 47 yards, 1:57 A big 50 yard runback by Josh Henry lets them start the drive from their own 47, and gets the crowd back into the game. Henry Simon moves them just inside the 20 on two nice runs before Broussard catches SMU overloading to stop the run, finds Jeffrey Ramirez in single coverage and hits him for the 19 yard TD. 11:51 2nd Quarter 21-7 Nevada Drive Stats: 3 plays, 33 yards, 00:49 Another decent runback gives SMU starting field position at the 32, and on a 3rd and long Les Singleton hits Emmitt Lane for 18 yards and a first down. after a pair of runs get SMU just past midfield but fail to give them another first down, they decide to play a little field position this time and the punt is downed at the Nevada 16 yard line. The decision pays off and SMU's defense pushes the Wolfpack offense back 3 yards in 3 plays before forcing a punt. Skipper only manages a 35 yard punt facing tremendous pressure, and the 6 yard return gives SMU excellent field position on the Wolfpack 42. Nevada dares SMU to beat them with the pass, but Singleton can't complete any of his three attempts and SMU is forced to punt. A beatiful Sherman Flemming punt pins Nevada deep in their own territory on the 2 yard line. Nevada's defense can't contain Simon and Nevada moves out to their 20, but a beautiful pass coverage play by safety Mel Robinson-Randall on Wesley Cash forces Nevada to punt again. SMU's special teams come up with a huge play on the punt and block it, giving SMU the ball on the Nevada 10 yard line. Nevada's reserve FB Wesley Cash is injured on the play, and if he can't come back in that leaves the Wolfpack with only one healthy FB on the roster. After a 7 yard Nicky South sack, Singleton finds Finch open for a 17 yard TD. 04:09 2nd Quarter 21-14 Nevada Drive Stats: 2 plays, 10 yards, 00:37 After taking the ball over on the 31 yard line, two plays go nowhere and the home crowd is going nuts, but Broussard calmly finds Henry Simon out of the backfield for a 15 yard completion and a first down. Simon fumbled the ball at the end of the play after he was belted by Luther Silas, but an alert Bob Dunne smartly fell on the loose ball. Nevada isn't as lucky this time around as Broussard gets belted from the blind side by Louis Jean, and DE Vince Shelton falls on the loose ball to give the Mustangs offense starting field position on the Nevada 41. On the first play Singleton keeps on the option and turns upfield for 27 yards, but a sack and a run for a loss force SMU into a 3rd and 18, which turns into a 4th and 10 after the pass to Lane only nets 8 yards. Nevada takes the short punt on the 30, and moves up to the 40 yard line. After a penalty moves them back five yards QB Broussard is belted, and needs medical attention. True freshman Patrick Jurgensen has to enter the game. SMU stacks the line and the handoff goes to Simon for only two yards, but on 3rd and 12 Jurgenson beats the SMU defense that's daring him to throw with a 24 yard pass to Palmer, then follows it up with an 18 yard pass to Joyner. SMU continues to stack the box with 8 defenders, and Nevada runs enough to keep the defense honest but Jurgensen hits another pass for 12 yards to Joyner that gives them first down on the 10 yard line. On the next play Jurgensen finds Jeffrey Ramirez single covered by a linebacker and hits him for a 10 yard touchdown. 5:38 2nd Quarter 28-17 Nevada Drive Stats: 8 plays, 70 yards, 3:31 SMU returner Reggie Blanchard takes the kickoff at the five but only manages 10 yards against a fired up Nevada kickoff coverage squad. SMU moves up to midfield a few yards at a time with the option play before Singleton finds Reggie Blanchard open for a big 31 yard gain. On 3rd and 5, Josh Henry takes the option pitch but is stuffed by Harry Kemp for a 4 yard loss forcing 4th and 9 on the Nevada 28. Jurgensen is not looking like a true freshman seeing his first game action on the road, and he continues to find open recievers and moves the chains. Simon gains 13 yards on the dive play and Nevada settles for a 40 yard Marcus Moss field goal. 08:42 4th Quarter 31-17 Nevada Drive Stats: 9 plays 69 yards, 5:03 SMU starts inside their 20 but open up with a big 35 yard pass play to Josh Henry, then 2 plays later a 22 yard pass to TE Murcury Fisher moves them down to the Nevada 25. #32 Tulsa (3-0,1-0) at #9 Nevada (3-0,1-0) Preview: Nevada's conference home opener comes against a decent Tulsa squad that plays good (but not great) across the board. The leader of the Golden Hurricane offense is senior Jeff Turner, who actually comes from Sparks, Nevada. Beating Nevada would be something he would really enjoy in his last season. Turner said this week in a radio interview that "I'd really like to make those guys regret that they didn't recruit me." Turner is effective passing - 43/60 for 555 yards, 3 TD's, 0 INT's, and is enough of a running threat to keep defenses honest. The primary offensive weapon he looks for is 5'11" Cary Pinkston, who has 255 yards and a TD on 12 catches. The running game is by committee, with RB Jose Dole, RB Greg Shepherd, and FB Rod Eller combining for 406 yards and 6 TD's on 96 carries. The leader on the Golden Hurrican defense is DE Joseph McGregor, who has 6 tackles, 9 assists, 3.5 sacks, 4 TFL, 1 PB, and 6 QB hurries despite constant double teams. Tulsa manages to move forward 6 yards before a 3rd down option handoff to the FB Rod Eller is stuffed at the line. Another short Courtney O'Neal punt gives Nevada the ball at the Golden Hurrican 38, but a deep pass into the end zone is picked off by Tulsa safety Jaun Barker. The Nevada coaches are trying to calm down Patrick Jurgensen after his shakey start. Tulsa moves close to midfield after two nice Jeff Turner passes, but the drive stalls after a sack puts Tulsa in 3rd and long. Tulsa moves out to the 20, but on the next play deep pass is picked off by Robert Shackelford at the 50. Nevada gains 7 yards in 3 plays and is forced to punt from the 43, but a well placed punt is taken from the 6 yard line and returned 6 yards by Jose Dole. This is a home game for Rice, and if Nevada is caught napping they could suffer a king sized upset. Rice recievers Ricky Wolfe and Eugene Henderson form what is probably the most talented reciever tandem in the conference. Players to watch: Rice QB Roosevelt Liliedahl 48 of 107 for 623 yards, 3 TD, 3 INT Liliedahl had a respectable season last year going 200/320 for 2280 yards, 16 TD's and 6 INT's, but has struggled so far this season. Recruiting Analysis: Position by position review QB (1-2): The coaches feel good about their chances with Ray Albright, and won't offer anyone else unless he drags things out too long. RB: Nevada won't sign an RB this year. FB (1): Nevada feels great about their chances with Pat Thomason right now. WR (1): After the top 2 guys committed elsewhere, the coaches are looking at a couple of different prospects right now before deciding who to offer. They are very close to extending an offer to Al Dillon (6'1" 179, 75/100) who has piled up some excellent stats this year for Loara HS in Anaheim, California. Dillon has 81 catches for 1976 yards and 13 TD's. OG (1-2): The top OG in the country, Les Ballard, is visiting. Right now the coaches want to get a better feel on Ballard and Will Banks (offer) before they start looking around more. OT (1): Jimmy Welch is visiting, and the staff feels comfortable enough with Welch that they aren't really looking around. DE (1): Rodney Kravitz is saying all the right things to the Nevada coaches and he's the guy they really want, but if he draws his recruitment out much longer the coaches already have alternative options. Kravitz is also strongly considering Stanford. Utah DE Sean Glover still has an offer, and the coaches are still in contact with him, but at this point it's a long shot. Nevada is competing with SMU, Stanford, BYU, Miami (Fla), and Utah State for his last visit. ILB (2): Obviously with the two recent offers to Davis and Whaley, the coaches don't feel very good about their chances with Leland Ellison. Ellison is the guy on the top of the chart by a great margin, but Davis or Whaley are both among the best the coaches have scouted this year. OLB (1): Wayne King is the first choice for Nevada, but King is undecided between Nevada, South Florida and Stanford and has said he changes his mind many times a day. CB (1): Al Steude is visiting Arkansas, Nevada, SJSU, South Carolina, and Stanford. Arkansas and South Carolina appear to be the solid leaders, but once Steude visits the campus anything can happen. Steude has gathered in 13 interceptions along with 45 tackles and 3.5 sacks. If Steude should decide to cross the country, a guy that would be in line for an offer would be Shawnee Mission, KS (South HS) 6'0" 174 lb cornerback Jay Alvarez. S (1): Sherman Hetherington is the guy they really want, the problem is that South Carolina is making a real run at the 6'1" safety. Hetherington has said that distance won't be a factor, but hopefully it becomes one. Hetherington has collected a superb 17 interceptions to go with 71 tackles and 5 sacks. Calvin Wolf of Derry, New Hampshire (Pinkerton Academy) is a guy who's high up on their board if they can't seal the deal with Hetherington.

Rice wins the toss and elect to recieve, and the Owls offense starts from the 20. On the first play Roosevelt Liliedahl drops back to pass and is pressured into throwing the ball away by Nicky South. On the next play he drops back and tosses a 38 yard post to Ricky Wolfe, who caught the defense in a two deep zone. After a 6 yard Van Arsdale run on first down, another pass is defeneded by Atkins and the third and 4 pass is knocked away by safety Carlos Bruce. Rice tries for the first down and only comes up with a yard on the toss sweep to Donnie Van Arsedale, a curious call. On the change of possession Hardy Simon and Stanley Curtis go to work, cracking off nice runs until the drive stops on the Rice 34 yard line. On fourth down Simon runs behind his mammoth tackle Cary Ballard and just reaches the first down marker. After a holding call on first down it's Simon for 22 yards, Simon for 8 yards, and Simon fort he last 10 yards and a touchdown. 08:25 1st Quarter 7-0 Nevada Drive Stats: 10 plays, 70 yards, 4:31 Rice has a close call on a fumbled kickoff return, but Ricky Wolf alertly falls on the ball to retain possession for the Owls on the Rice 28 yard line. Two plays later they aren't as fortunate and the Roosevelt Lilidahl pass is picked off by Chuck Abrams on the Nevada 48 and returned 33 yards. Two consecutive runs are stuffed and the third down play results in a 6 yard sack. Nevada lines up to go for it on fourth down, but the play is stopped on an illegal motion penalty on the offense. Oddly, Jeffrey Ramirez suffers some sort of minor injury on the play. The penalty pushes Nevada back to the 31 and leaves them with a 4th down and 22. Patrick Jurgensen completes his first pass of the day for 12 yards to WR Dustin Palmer, and Rice takes over on the 19 yard line. The next Owls play is a 2 yard gain by Van Arsedale. On the play, ILB Deron Gilmore is injured and requires assistance to leave the field. The Owls manage a first down and move up to the Rice 37, but a Liliedahl scramble only brings 3 yards on 3rd and 8. Rice punter Freddie Gilmore sends off a 41 yard punt that Simon fair catches at the 22. Jeffrey Ramirez is back in for this series, and on the third play of the drive he catches a 20 yard out from Patrick Jurgensen that he takes upfield for 8 more yards, moving Nevada to the Rice 40 yard line. Three failed pass attempts later Nevada is forced to punt, and Tim Skipper sends off a nice 35 yard punt that is downed at the Rice 11. The Owls gain a first down on a 14 yard pass, but the ground game is ineffective and Rice is forced to punt on 4th and 8 from their own 23. On a 3rd and 2 play Nevada is called for a big Illegal use of the hands penalty that has them in a 3rd and 20 from their own 33. The pass is blocked, and the Wolfpack are forced to punt. Rice takes the ball and moves up to midfield where a 3rd and 3 Liliedahl pass is picked off by Wolfpack linebacker Robert Shackelford, who was doubling up the intended reciever. Jurgensen finds his groove and hits Ramirez for 14 yards, then FB Wesley Cash for 18 yards, and from the 10 yard line Stanley Curtis follows a big block by Cary Ballard and sprints into the end zone for the 10 yard TD. 06:58 2nd Quarter 14-0 Nevada Drive Stats: 3 plays, 44 yards, 1:19 Rice finds some daylight with their ground game until they move to midfield and it stalls. The Owls punt pins Nevada deep in their own territory on the 5 yard line. after gaining 0 then 1 yard, a big 3rd and 9 Jurgense pass from the 6 yard line is caught by Jeffrey Ramirez, who takes it up to the 20 yard line for a first down. Nevada is trying to beat everyone else out - he also has offers from Norfolk and Texas A&M, but is starting to get more attention from big names like Utah, UAB, and Arkansas. Irwin attends Escondido, California, San Pasqual HS. ILB Harvey Castillo (6'4" 215, scouted 72+/100) The offer extended to Castillo, who hails from Van Nuys, Califonia (Birmingham HS), was the result of many intensive hours of scouting and reviewing film. Castillo is a bit of a project, but the coaches think his combination of speed, size, and instincts is superb. Castillo is the 33rd rated ILB prospect in the country, #560 overall, and also has offers from NM State, Rice, San Diego State, and Utah State. Castillo posted 95 tackles, 6.5 sacks, and 10 interceptions his senior year. OLB Harrison Spencer (6'0" 226, scouted 48+/100) Spencer is a real sleeper, and his Nevada offer has suprised some people in the recruiting circles. OLB Wes Tirado (5'11" 201, scouted 83+/100) Tirado is a real force, but is bumped down the recruiting rankings (#17 OLB, #242 overall) because of a lack of ideal size. "He's a real player," a Nevada source said of the smallish linebacker, "we weren't too crazy about his size but he could put on some more weight and be a force at outside linebacker. #26 Fresno State (5-1,3-0) at #8 Nevada (5-0, 3-0) Coverage on TV1 Preview: Fresno State and Nevada grab the national spotlight in the firce conference game to get top billing in many years. Fresno State has been spectacular in winning their last four, allowing an average of 1.5 points per game during that span while scoring an average of of just over 40 points. Fresno State runs the Trips formation offense that has piled up such marvelous stats over the years; the matchup of an excellent, pass happy FSU offense with the stingy Nevada defense that's almost inflexible in it's quest to stifle opponent's run game will be a very interesting one. Players to watch: Fresno State WR Bubba Black 6'0" 182, 33 catches for 647 yards and 9 TD's Black is a touchdown scoring machine, and has also scored a KO return for a TD. Levine is good both in space and attacking, and always winds up around the ball. Nevada has 10 scholarships remaining and wants to sign 1-2 QB's, 1 WR, 1 OT, 1 DE, 2 ILB's, and 1 OLB. The other two might go to the best available players at any position, or get held for later use.

You may be right, but I don't save all box scores so I can't tell if it was OT or not. Is there another way to tell? Even considering that, it's a pretty wild score.

I'm going to break up the first part a bit so it might be easier to read.. On a gorgeous day for football, Nevada wins the toss and elects to recieve. Taking the ball at the goal line, Hardy Simon is swarmed over on the 13 yard line by a fired up Bulldogs kickoff squad. After an offside penalty by Fresno gives Nevada a 5 yard gift, Hardy Simon takes the handoff and follows Jay Carpenter for a 6 yard gain and a first down on the 24. After losing 5 yards in the next 2 plays, Patrick Jurgensen drops back to pass and the attempted hitch pass to Stanley Curtis after a pump fake is knocked down by Harold Floyd. Nevada was lucky that wasn't a pick 6. Tim Skipper gets off a decent 37 yard punt that Bubba Black returns for 2 yards to the Fresno 46. The first play from scrimmage is a 4 yard Antoine Hopper pass to Tight End Spencer Middleton, who turns upfield for another 5 yards. Things are compounded for Nevada when Mo Grasmanis is injured on the play. After a 20 yard pass gets the Bulldogs down to the Wolfpack 29, Nicky South puts a sweet spin move on the offensive tackle and forces a poorly thrown ball. After a one yard gain on second down, Mo Grasmanis rejoins the defense and gets the big third down sack of Hopper for a loss of 5 yards. Grasmanis forced the fumble with an aggressive swipe at the ball, but OT Nathan Moore falls on the ball for the Bulldogs. Trying to catch the Wolfpack defense off guard, Fresno state rushes up to the line on fourth down but a trap play nets only two yards after Carlos Bruce steps up and delivers a blow to RB Mitch Humphries. Nevada gets the ball on the 31 on downs and a holding penalty pushes Nevada back 10 yards. On first down and 20 Nevada gets five of them back on a screen play to Quentin Fulton. Simon carries for five then six yards and Nevada is forced to punt from the 36. Tim Skipper sends off a 37 yard punt that is downed on the Fresno 27. Hopper drops back to pass and gets pressured by South again, forcing another pass that goes off target. After a Humphries run of 1 yard, Hopper is sacked by DT Ronnie Vanderjagt for a 7 yard loss. Vanderjagt is getting a lot more PT after filling in for Grasmanis so well, and he might be the best DT on the roster right now. After a 42 yard punt is returned by Simon for 7 yards, Nevada gets the ball with their best field position of the day, on their own 44 yard line. After clipping is called on Fresno State (clipping on the defense) the ball is marked off 10 yards against Nevada. (!) Jurgensen drops back and throws a strike to WR Dustin Palmer, but Palmer can't get the handle and Nevada is stuck in a third and 22. Jurgensen hits Hardy Simon on a screen play, but a hustling Harold Floyd pulls Simon down after a 4 yard gain. After a nice 44 yard Skipper punt, Fresno takes over on their own 20. Two pass plays move the Bulldogs to midfield. After a short run and a 3 yard scramble, the 3rd and 4 pass is overthrown. After a 36 yard punt is fielded by Hardy Simon, the punter Matt Strong makes a huge hit and knocks the ball free. After a mad scramble players are unpiled and Fresno state recovers the ball on the 13. What a Huge play for the Bulldogs... After a delay penalty on first down, Hopper throws a short 3 yard pass. The Humphries run on second down his blown up by Vanderjagt for a 2 yard loss, and on third down true freshman Ross Coker taps away a sure touchdown pass intended for Bubba Black. K Leslie Gash hits a 34 yard field goal giving Fresno State the 3 point lead, but holding on first down at the 13 is definitely a positive for the Nevada defense. 02:01 1st Quarter 3-0 Fresno State Drive: 4 plays, -4 yards. Fresno's lead is short lived as Ray Pugh takes the kickoff from the 7, finds a seam in the coverage, and busts the kickoff return 93 yards for the go ahead score. 01:55 1st Quarter 7-3 Nevada Nevada takes the kickoff and returns it to the 27, but a holding call forces them to start on the 8 yard line. On the first play Hopper hits Black for a 19 yard gain. The following play is destroyed by pressure from true freshman Ross Coker, who is playing a solid game in his first start. Coker was playing high school opponents at this time last year. Fresno is forced into a 3rd and 10 situation, but Hopper calmly completes a dart to Black, who was double covered on the play, for a 16 yard gain. After a defensive holding call give the bulldogs a first down, another Fresno run is stuffed and Mo Grasmanis pressures Hopper into another bad pass. On third and 8 Fresno hands the ball off to Mitch Humphries, but he can only gain four yards and Fresno is forced to punt from their own 49. Nevada takes the punt at the 15 and gets 3 yards on the Bob Dunne return. A first down holding call really puts Nevada in the hole, giving them a first and 19 at the 9. Patrick Jurgensen calmly steps back and hits Simon on the screen play, which gets the 10 yards back and gives Nevada a second and 9. A Hardy Simon second down run is stuffed, and on third down Jurgensen completes his first pass to a wide reciever in the game, a big 32 yard play to C.J. Joyner. After another Simon run is stuffed, a Jurgensen pass is dropped on second down by the tight end Tracy Quarles. The third down pass is money however, a 23 yard screen to the fullback Quentin Fulton. Simon is getting stuffed almost every time he gets the ball, but it's opening things up for Jurgensen who hits a 2nd and 13 pass to Quarles for 15 yards and a first down on the Fresno 20. Stanley Curtis gets the ball on first down and gets jammed up, but on second down Jurgensen finds a hole in the defense and hits C.J. Joyner for a 23 yard touchdown. 08:57 2nd Quarter 14-3 Nevada Drive: 10 plays, 91 yards, 5:09 Bubba Black prevents momentum from swinging too much in Nevada's favor with a big 55 yard return that gives Fresno the ball on the Nevada 38. After a sprint draw on first down goes for 11 yards, the first down is stuffed and then Mo Grasmanis blows up two consecutive pass plays with big pressure, forcing a 43 yard field goal that Gash sticks. 06:45 1st Quarter 14-6 Nevada Drive: 4 plays, 12 yards, 2:12 After Hardy Simon brings the ball out to the 29 from one yard deep, he takes the first down handoff and gets his first nice run of the day - a 24 yard trap play. Tracy Quarles laid a beautiful block on the safety that sprung Simon. Curtis comes in to give Simon a breather, and takes the next play 5 yards. On 2nd and 5, Jurgensen hits Quarles for 30 yards, and in the blink of an eye Nevada is in the red zone. Two plays are dropped for a total of minus 8 yards, and the third down pass is off the mark. Marcus Moss comes on the field and gives Nevada back a 14 point lead with the 37 yard field goal. 03:22 2nd Quarter 17-6 Nevada 6 plays, 51 yards, 3:22 Fresno takes the ball on their own 42, but South makes his presence known on the first down pass attempt with enough pressure to force an errant pass. The second down pass goes to Black for 21 yards, and Fresno crosses midfield to the 47. South puts a blinding spin move on guard Patrick Irwin and blasts Hopper for the 5 yard sack on first down, and on second down Grasmanis puts heat on Hopper and forces another bad throw. On third and 15 cornerback Cris Hines comes off the corner blitz and belts Hopper for a 6 yard sack, and Fresno moves back to their own 42 for fourth down. After a short Simon run, the Jurgensen pass is picked off by cornerback Clyde Chu at the nevada 43 and returned to the 8, giving FSU a chance to get the lead down to one score. Fresno calls a 3 yard run off tackle, and calls a timeout with 14 seconds left. On second and goal, Fresno RB Lonnie McCarthy takes the dive play in for the touchdown. 00:04 2nd Quarter 17-13 Nevada Drive: 2 plays, 8 yards, :17 Nevada takes the ball on a touchback, and on first down it appears the Fresno defense is thinking more about the locker room at halftime, because Hardy Simon take the ball on the dive play, dodges the linebacker, and puts a sweet shoulder fake on the safety, and as the half expires he is on his way to the end zone. 00:00 2nd Quarter 24-13 Nevada Drive: 1 play, 80 yards, 0:04 Halftime Stat Leaders Nevada (142 yards passing, 107 yards rushing, 8 first downs) Jurgensen - 8 of 13 for 142 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT Simon - 12 rushes for 109 yards, 1 TD Joyner - 2 catches for 55 yards, 1 TD Fresno State (116 yards passing, 10 yards rushing, 7 first downs) Hopper - 8 of 19 for 116 yards Humphries - 4 rushes for 18 yards, 1 TD Black - 3 catches for 56 yards 2nd Half: Fresno starts with the ball on their own 32, and moves down to the Nevada 23 in two plays. Oliver Shwartz makes a beautiful play on a second down pass that looked like a sure touchdown, and Mo Grasmanis again applies pressure forcing a bad thrown on third down. Gash knocks in a 38 yard field goal on fourth down. 12:58 3rd Quarter 24-16 Nevada Drive: 5 plays, 47 yards, 2:02 After the touchback, Nevada can only manage two incompletions before suffering an 8 yard sack by DE Rod Caruso. Tim Skipper shanks a punt from the 12, and the 29 yard punt is returned for 13 yards putting Fresno in great field position. Nevada's defense stuffs two runs for no gain before Nicky South pressures Hopper into a bad pass on third and 10, but the fourth and 10 pass goes for 11 yards and gives Fresno a first down on the 17. Hopper hits the 2nd down pass for a 13 yard TD to WR Tommy Robb, but the two point play is stuffed. 09:24 3rd Quarter 24-22 Nevada Drive: 6 plays, 28 yards, 2:40 Nevada's offense is stalled, and after an intentional grounding on first down two passes result in nothing and Nevada is forced to punt from the 10. Skipper punts under tremendous pressure and only gets off a 24 yarder, which is returned for 15 yards to the Nevada 19. The first down pass goes 17 yards to the 2, and after two stuffed runs Fresno gets the lead back with a 4 yard pass to Robb. 07:21 3rd Quarter 29-24 Fresno Drive: 4 plays, 19 yards, 1:37 Two plays go for nothing, and a third down pass attempt results in another sack. Nevada's offense is in reverse, and for the third time in a row they are punting from inside their own 20. This time Skipper gives the defense some breathing room, and sends off a 44 yard punt that's downed at the Fresno 42. South and Grasmanis are in the backfield on almost every play, and after a 5 yard Grasmanis sack the third and 15 pass only goes 8 yards to the Nevada 45. Hardy Simon breaks free on the first down run from the 19, and goes up to the Nevada 41 yard line. Simon takes a couple more carries to get Nevada past the 50, but the drive stalls there and a 27 yard punt is returned 21 yards to the Fresno 38. After a first down run, Nevada is flagged for unnecessary roughness and Fresno moves past midfield. On 3rd and long, Nevada bails out Fresno again with a defensive holding call that moves Fresno to the Wolfpack 27. After a second down sack by Grasmanis, Hopper throws a pass that is thieved by CB Kelly Hall at the 5 and returned 15 yards. Simon takes the first down run for 6 yards, but the next two runs are stuff and Nevada punts on 4th and 9. On the punt, Nevada is called for the ineligible man downfield, and Skipper is banged up on a hit that should have been called for roughing the punter. Skipper gets up and sends off a 39 yard punt that gives Fresno the ball at midfield. Fresno state Moves down to the 20 on a pass to Black, but on the next play OLB Roman Buckner steps in front of a Hopper pass at the 10 and takes it back 6 yards. The Wolfpack offense finally shows some life with a screen pass to Simon that goes 31 yards. A committee effort by Simon, Curtis, and Fulton gets the ball to the Fresno 14, where Jurgensen finds Joyner for their second touchdown hookup of the day. The two point run attempt is stuffed, but Nevada takes the one point lead. 03:27 4th Quarter 30-29 Nevada Fresno takes the ball on the 22, and on first down Grasmanis drops Hopper for a 6 yard loss, Mo's third sack of the day. He almost gets his fourth sack on 2nd and 16, but his pressure forces a bad throw. Hopper hits a third down pass, but it only goes 8 yards and Fresno is forced to punt from the 24. Nevada's punt rush team gets tremendous pressure on Matt Strong, and he barely gets off a wobbly kick that goes 21 yards before being downed at the Fresno 45. The screen play has been money for the Wolfpack all day, and it works for 24 yards as Jurgensen hits Fulton out of the backfield. Nevada sticks to the ground on the next 3 plays and plays it safe, while Fresno uses up their timeouts but hold Nevada to a 33 yard field goal attempt that Moss cooly nails. 01:04 4th quarter 33-29 Nevada Drive: 4 plays, 29 yards, 1:04 Fresno takes after the ball after a short kickoff to the 14, and return it 20 yards to the 34. The Bulldogs take over with 0:54 left on the clock. On first down Ross Coker drops Hopper for a 6 yard sack, the 8th sack of Hopper on the day. With 33 seconds left on second and 16, Hopper is dropped for the 9th time as Coker and Andre Witt meet at the quarterback for an 8 yard sack and Fresno has only 13 seconds left and 80 yards to go. Witt drops back and feels pressure from Witt which causes an errant throw, but Witt belts Hopper after the pass is thrown and Nevada gives up 15 yards on an unnecessary roughness call, giving the Bulldogs another breath of life with 8 seconds left and a first down on the Fresno 35. It looks like instant replay, as Witt pressures Hopper into a bad pass but is flagged for the second time in a row for roughing the passer, and with 1 tick left on the clock Fresno has the ball on the 50 yard line. Nicky South pressures Hopper on the last play of the game, and the pass sails harmlessly out of bounds. Final: 33-29 Nevada

We put them in some bad situations time after time, yet they came up pretty big for the most part. The front line played very well, Mo in particular, and we kept Hopper under constant pressure. For his high ranking, Rob is still a project who's probably going to need a redshirt year to adjust to college football. Nevada coaches are going to hit the road and look at more prospects this week. At QB, the coaches are very concerned about Ray Albright. They were in the drivers seat for a long time, but now Kansas State has gotten very involved and it sounds like Albright is leaning to the kitties. There's a real sleeper prospect right now that will eventually get an offer after Albright decides, that is Visala, California (Golden West HS) 6'5" gunslinger Phillip Carlton. Carlton doesn't appear on the major lists, but the coaches think he's got excellent potential. at WR, Michaud is a heavy Nevada lean and it would be a huge upset for him to wind up anywhere else. At DE, Rodney Kravitz is the guy they want, and he's had Nevada out in the lead since early on, but the longer he goes the more nervous the coaches are getting. They are very close to offering Syracuse, NY (George Fowler HS) prospect Alvin Lawhorne. Lawhorne is 6'4" 231, and listed at #171 on the Rivals national list. He may actually have an offer on the way, according to a source in the program. at ILB, offers has been extended to a pair of Pennsylvania prospects, 6'3", 214 lb Kent Mullins, who attends Avon Grove HS in West Grove, and 6'1" 199 lb Mack Malone, who attends Port Allegany HS in Port Alleganey. at OLB, Nevada will try to take both Wes Tirado and Harrison Spencer. at S, Howard Levine should verbal to Nevada any day now.

UTEP's record is a bit of a surprise until you notice that 3 of their wins are against teams rated in the triple digits. UTEP's passing game out of the pro set is solid, but their running game is one of the worst in the nation. Players to Watch: UTEP DE Ernie Tanner 38 tackles, 8 assists, 11 sacks, 16 TFL, 1 PB, 18 QB Hurries Tanner is by far the most productive player on defense. UTEP QB Andy Givens 138 of 247, 1790 yards, 14 TD, 10 INT 61 rushes for 74 yards, 1 TD Givens is having a good year on a team lacking talent. Nevada WR Jeffrey Ramirez 20 catches for 353 yards, 5 TD Ramirez should have a nice day if he's on the field long enough. Recruiting Update: QB Ray Albright (offer) has decided to attend BYU (!) OT Mercury Grier has decided to attend Cal ILB Kim Doyle has decided to attend Iowa ILB Ricky James has decided to attend Alabama Recruiting Analysis Nevada was dealt a huge blow with Albright going to BYU. Phillip Carlton has been offered which isn't a surprise, but another QB has also been offered - Southampton, NY (Southampton HS) prospect Michael Keith. Keith is a 4 year starter and a member of the New York all-state squad, but has been ranked fairly low (#433 overall, #29 as a QB) because of his height - Keith stands 5'10". Keith does a lot of good things on the football field, and finished his senior year throwing for 3112 yards on 191 of 303 passing for 18 TD's and 5 int's. He also chipped in 122 rushes for 745 yards and 3 TD's on the ground. Ideally, Nevada will be able to sign both Keith and Carlton. At WR, Hugh Michaud is down to Nevada and Western Michigan, but Nevada is considered a near lock for the Montana reciever. At DE, things have really heated up after Nevada offered Alvin Lawhorn. Lawhorn has his final 5, all of which he is visiting. Iowa State, Miami (Fla), South Carolina, and Utah are all in the hunt for his signature, along with Nevada. Utah and Nevada are rumored to be the two leaders for Lawhorn. The other DE Nevada has been recruiting hard is Rodney Kravitz, and Rodney is down to Nevada, Fresno State, Georgia, and Stanford. at ILB, Mack Malone is visiting Nevada but Kent Mullins declined to even visit Nevada. There's 4 or 5 other guys Nevada is in contact with, but nobody knows who will get the second offer at ILB at this point. Nevada is leading on OLB Harrison Spencer, OLB Wes Tirado, and S Howard Levine as of right now, but anything can happen. On a chilly day in El Paso, Nevada wins the toss and takes the ball. Deion Burton returns the ball 21 yards to the 31, and the Wolfpack offense starts there. Nevada moves down to the Miners' 39 in a hurry, but after two stuffed Hardy Simon runs and an incomplete pass Nevada is faced with a 4th and 10. Thinking a punt won't get them much, the Wolfpack coaches keep their offense on the field, and Patrick Jurgensen rewards their decision with a 10 yard pass to Quentin Fulton who snuck out of the backfield after a chip block on the blitzing linebacker. Nevada gets down to the 17 before losing momentum, and the 34 yard field goal is just plain missed by Marcus Moss. UTEP moves 7 yards in two plays, but the third and three Givens pass is thieved by Ross Coker at the UTEP 36, who was just playing center field and reading the QB's eyes. UTEP is taking a page out of Louisiana Tech's defensive gameplan and throwing everything they have into stopping Hardy Simon. That lets Jurgensen get some space to throw, and he caps off a short drive with a 25 yard strike to Jeffrey Ramirez. 05:45 1st Quarter 7-0 Nevada Drive: 4 plays, 41 yards, 1:19 Nevada's defense is already in gear, and after allowing runs of 1 and 2 yards, Mo Grasmanis busts through the line and belts Givens 7 yards in the backfield, forcing a fumble that is recovered by UTEP. A nice punt from the 13 forces the Wolfpack offense to start from the 32, but Jurgensen is really having a nice game and moves the team down the field on 3 nice throws. After getting the red zone, Stanley Curtis gains 10 yards then Simon finishes off the drive with a 3 yard plunge. 00:31 1st Quarter 14-0 Nevada Drive: 9 plays, 68 yards, 2:43 UTEP gets some momentum with a big 63 yard return that puts them on the Nevada 35. After moving down to the 28, UTEP is forced to try a 45 yard Levon Lewis FG, and he nails it. 13:20 2nd Quarter 14-3 Nevada Drive: 3 plays, 12 yards, 2:11 Nevada starts this drive on their own 33 yard line, and grind this drive out on the ground with the exception of one third and 8 pass from Patrick Jurgensen to Jeffrey Ramirez. Hardy Simon beats the defense and goes 39 yards for the TD on a sweep right. 10:11 2nd Quarter 21-3 Nevada Drive: 6 plays, 67 yards, 3:09 UTEP moves immediately into scoring position on a 50 yard dash by RB Sammie Bourque, but the defense puts the stops on the Miners offense and a 27 yard field goal attempt goes wide right. Players to watch: Boise St. RB Calvin Alston 152 rushes, 757 yards, 6 TD 20 catches, 139 yards, 1 TD Alston is one of the tallest running backs in college football (6'4" 233). He's a real steady performer who can get the tough yards, but he's not much of a home run hitter. Boise St. QB Leo Gonzalez 97/187, 1218 yards, 8 TD, 11 INT, 108.9 QBR Gonzalez will have to have a career game to pull off the upset. After a stuffed Hardy Simon, Patrick Jurgensen is picked by ILB Dennis Ross, who returns the ball 29 yards for a TD. 13:41 1st Quarter 7-0 SJSU Ray Pugh takes the ball at the 4 and breaks off a nice 36 yard return. The Nevada coaches had a quick talk with Jurgensen, and they aren't afraid to put the game in his hands early. Sheilds, a 6'3" 204 ILB prospect from San Diego, California Gompers HS, is really raw but as the frame to grow into a solid MLB prospect with good range and speed. Campbell, 6'0" 189, scouted 48-/100, had an good year throwing 181/370 for 2352 yards, 18 TD's, and 5 INT's. Scouting Maryland: Maryland is pretty outstanding, undefeated, and could be the best team in the nation right now.
