Some interesting stories this year. I had an incredibly hard time deciding on the RL Commissioner's Award in fact. Went with the 90 mph Split-ball pitcher that had one of the most dominating seasons in a while (Jim Carr). Very close runner up was the 40 year old Bailey Marks who out of no where hit 40 home runs for the first time in his career!

Did Spring find the fountain of youth or something? Is that what the word Spring refers to?

I can see how you could have had a hard time deciding but I'm glad you picked Carr for the award

Lots of all stars but not many championships shows my deficiency in FOOL format. I try to spread talent up and down the lineup but I never have that huge star. I guess picking in the middle of the draft most of the time will do that.

If you release somebody and they retire that same year do you still lose out on their contract? (ie., SP Ramón López retires.)

EDIT: answered wrong

EDIT #2: Yes, if you had released him you likely lost the money. When you release someone the contract is paid at the moment of release.

Hyde is correct. Once you release someone, you pay the amount you owe them in a flat sum payment all at once then.

Kind of figured that was the case.

Thanks for the answers guys...

I had three guys that left for FA that I really wish I was able to sign them before headed to the market. I was able to sign all three so very happy about that. I wonder if I could go with a 2 SP staff - because that's all I have on my active roster. I'm really hoping one of my MR can step up and become a decent SP.

Bouchard pisses me off. I twice offered him what he wanted to extend and he didn't take it, he wanted just a little bit (less than 200k) each time. I know that sometimes you gotta go higher, its just that I hadn't had that happen for me in quite a while and didn't adjust for it. I didn't have the money to go full bore Free Agency after him, so now my rotation plans are all screwed up.

I know, I know, whining from the two time champs. Who wants to hear that...I'll shut up now.

I have an issue with that. If a guy says he wants $20 to sign. He should sign for $20. If he wants more then he should say that. If you offer a guy his asking price, he should sign no matter what.

I agree, and I think normally that is the case that they do. I think what happens sometimes and I don't know why is there is a delay between when you send the request and when they receive it that they seem to be "considering" it. If you blow them away with the offer far and above their request, then they sign quickly. if you don't, then they consider the offer.

Usually they accept it, sometimes something else happens during the consideration phase that changes their opinion on accepting it. The most common thing here is you simply run out of time and free agency starts before they accept it.

I guess for your safety sake, you should view their "demand" as more of a case of:

"We likely will sign for x amount. If you want to offer that, we will definitely consider it"

Man, he wanted just 200K and you offered him exact? Game's busted for a guy of his talent to even ask for that amount, IMO.

That's a tough thing to have happen. He should accept what he's saying he'll accept.

That said, you should be kicking yourself for not offering him much more (like a $1 M), which still would have been a terrific deal.

Since I screw up all the time, if you need help kicking yourself, PM me and I'll tell you how.

I was more than happy to offer him 5 Mil per while I suck for a couple years and get a couple draft picks. After the 2 years I'll gladly give him the pennies he'll be asking for and keep him well into his prime.

Welp, in that case I hope he flames out early and you get nothing for those 10 million dollars.

Okay, that can change things, depending on how much he was asking for.

I actually did offer him considerably more, but it looks like the signing team offered incentives. I thought about doing so also, but its always been taboo in other leagues to offer incentives unless the player asked for it and I didn't want to break any rules.

I thought we were able to give incentives that were reasonable - am I wrong by saying that?

I was going to say he could be very loyal to his team but that trait is very low for him. But his desire to win is high - maybe he felt staying with a team that has gone to the playoffs 3 years in a row had something to do with me signing him?

Yes, reasonable incentives are ok. it is self-policing here, basically don't be someone who cares more about winning than being a part of a friendly community.

I don't have the game in front of me so can't see what the incentives are, but generally as long as they are kept small to be a non-factor it's not a huge deal.

Judging from past experience, the incentives unfortunately play too large of a role in the player deciding where to play, hence why other leagues I have played in have regulations or outlaw them altogether.

Not a big deal. At least I know the rule on them now

I gave him 400k over 200 IP and 800k for Pitcher Award.

I'm hoping I didn't step over the boundaries here because I'm definitely in FOOL more for the community than anything else. I often give incentive bases contracts - no just FA but to guys I'm trying re-sign as well.

Nah its no big deal. The incentives you offered were nothing outrageous. Again I just come from other leagues that generally don't allow any incentives unless the player specifically asks for them.

My fault for not asking Alan on the rule.

Yeah, I don't think that offer is a huge deal there.

For newer folk in the league, we've had a rocky history with incentive policing. Basically it is too much of a headache since sometimes players specifically ask for incentives, if you just accept the player's request by default you may not even realize you are offering them.

We found it made the league much less fun for everyone to police those or other similar type rules, so we basically made an agreement league wide that every team would go out of their way to try to avoid cases that would cause us to have to possibly regulate stuff.

Other than perhaps 3 times in 170-180 years worth of leagues (between the two leagues), we've really not had too many issues which I attribute to the quality of the ownership here.

I would like some guidelines regarding incentives because I can be crazy.

I Lost my 3B Clint Lewis after offering him his contract demands as well.

Well, there will be no three-peat in Spring. We haven't been able to sign anyone during free agency, and I completely forgot to set my draft list, so our future may be a little wonky as well, even though we got a ton of draft picks this year. Bah, this offseason SUCKED.
