Odd computer issue

Lately my computer has taken to giving me the dreaded blue screen of death on a somewhat regular basis. When it tries to reboot, it asks for a boot device because it cannot communicate with my hard drive, apparently. If I turn it off and wait a second or two, it will boot with no problem...until it BSDs again. I've cleaned out the case (dust is a killer) and re-checked all my connections, so that is all good. Any thoughts from the groupthink out there as to what this could be? Any other diagnostic ideas outside of troubleshooting part by part (HD, cables and motherboard are my suspect list at the moment)?

Sounds like your HDD is failing. May also be an issue with the system board but I would start with the HDD.

I agree with Shepp although the fact that it boots after waiting for a couple of seconds makes me wonder if it's the drive. Try to reseat the memory sticks. Run memory diagnostics and a disk check. To be safe, start backing up anything that's important.

So tonight I'm going to get into the nitty gritty of the computer. Checked both RAM sticks last night and neither is the problem. Any way to troubleshoot the HD without simply replacing it? SSD's aren't exactly cheap, and I'd hate to buy a new one only to find out it's the motherboard.

You will need to check the health of your SSD.

Check the manufacturers website or use something like this (that's for Intel drives):

Intel® Download Center

I suspect HD as well.

How to Analyze a BSOD Crash Dump

The failure on reboot makes it unlikely that its a simple driver problem, so you're probably screwed in some way, but maybe there will be information in the blue screen memory dump that tells you exactly how and could remove some of the guesswork?
