Nice! I've been swamped with work (year end closes are terrible!), but after that I should be free for some gaming. I'll post my codes when I look them up. Anyone else want to share? |

For Animal Crossing, I am TerpKris of OzTown, friend code 1804-5106-7027. My fruit is apples, though I have cherries, coconuts, and oranges planted right now (too early to bear fruit right now, or to know if they'll even survive..)
In Mario Kart, my friend code is: 111729 348632 I look forward to some good online play! SI and I have already "met up" in MOCKBA this afternoon. Edited to add fruit /tk

I've got oranges in Animal Crossing.
I've also got one of all fruit growing somewhere in my town. However, one of the trees is dying so maybe I'll be lacking one SI

Bump. Anyone else online? It's kindof a slow period now. Not much news until Tetris and Metroid Prime come online in March.

Finally got around to picking up MarioKart, so figured I'd post here. Still wish Advance Wars was WiFi capable as its the game that steals most of my time, along with the Yugioh game (no laughing.. I like CCGs, but don't like paying for cards. )
Anyways: MarioKart Code: 386611 361906 American Sk8tland Code: 180452932742 Animal Crossing: Code: 1761-5789-3933 Name: Bootsy Town: Funktown (If they'd only given us one more letter for town name...) I'd kill to have Advance Wars WiFi compatible.
Everyone in the thread has been added in both Mario Kart and Animal Crossing. SI

Eilim, I added you to my list. Now I, like SI, have everybody here in my list.
What are all the types of fruit? Apples are native to me, but I have: apples cherries oranges peaches pears I really need coconuts. I've tired to plant a few of them, and they've all died. /tk

I think thats all of them. I've actually had rediculous luck with my coconut growing, yet to have a tree fail. I think I have about 15 or more of them growing on my beach. As soon as I'm done replacing all "normal" trees with fruit trees, I plan on setting a nice size section aside for attempting to grow some flower hybrids. Well, I'm off to go play some sort of shoot'em up game or atleast something involving blood and gore to make up for the fact I just talked about my urge to plant flowers in a video game. |

So how does the wireless connectivity work? Do i just turn on a DS in my house if I have a Wireless Router, and it'll work? Do I need to login somehow? What if I have an encrypted connection? Laptops need to get the key to use my wireless, so how can a DS just "work?"
Just curious as to how this works... |

Also, if you don't have a wireless router or a compatible one, you can get a USB Network adapter that acts as a wireless router for your DS. Basically you hook it up in a USB drive and you can then access that much as you would access through a wireless router. I have a friend online who does that and it works just fine for him. I've vistited his Animal Crossing town for over half an hour. SI

Hmm..interesting. I didn't realize so many folks had Nintendo DS. I got a PSP last month and the wireless part was the reason I liked it.

For the record, I have both the PSP and the DS.
Only games I'm playing on my PSP right now are FIFA2006 and Lumines. Can't wait for FM2006 to come out for it. Then agian, only games I'm playing on the DS are Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, and Mario & Luigi Partners in Time (and of those three, it's mostly AC lately). Meanwhile, my PS2 is collecting dust. /tk

Thanks for the answer.
How is the wireless community? Fun games of Mario Kart, or do people disconnect a lot? Just wondering now if it's fun to play more than it'll be annoying... |

Knock on wood, I've never had a problem with the wireless on the DS (nor the PSP).
That said, my router can be flaky anyway, so if I did drop off, I'd first assume it was on that end of things. And now that I've said that, I'm not going to be able to connect at all. /tk

If you're familiar with snaking (it's originally from MK: DD), it's still around and kindof makes games feel like haves versus have nots. If you're not familiar, it's a way to get speed boosts down the straight away by power sliding back and forth. It's kindof broken on some courses so snakers will wipe out non-snakers regardless of anything else. However, if you pick courses you can't snake on, then it's much more fair and you can win without snaking. I don't know how to do it, personally, and I've found that if I'm racing against non-snakers, it's fun, racing against snakers can be frustrating as they'll win by 20-30 seconds, even if you get all kinds of good items. Also, there are some snakers who, if they are racing against non-snakers, will not snake and make the races competitive. Frankly, it's about the only gameplay weakness to the game- it really needs to go for the next one. Hasn't stopped me from playing online. I'm not super good and I still have something like a 20-25 record in online games and still love playing when I'm not playing AC, Meteos, or Advance Wars (and Phoenix Wright is on the way!). Tho, I'm not entirely sure how they calculate that (ie I think if you finish 2nd out of 3, I think you get 1 win and 1 loss, but I could be wrong). SI

Thanks for the replies. I'm just looking for something fun to play, and the DS really interested me once I learned about the world-wide wireless internet.
There's an online Resident Evil co-op game coming out sometime too, which I hope is as fun as the PS2 version. I don't have a PS2, but I love playing that game when I'm at a friend's house. |

I get a lot more fun by going to other people's AC villages and seeing what they have going but that game really isn't for everyone. For the people that like it, it's totally addictive to us

There are two big downsides as the NES games are gone as are real holidays (replaced by game-based holidays which aren't nearly as fun, imo) but there's a plethora of new stuff (flower breeding, constellations, more clothes, hair, etc) that it's still ridiculously fun, especially with the ability to visit other people's towns via Wi-Fi.

Unless someone has some has issues, I'm just going to combine this into the "official" DS thread for FOFC and copy friend codes onto the top post. If you don't want yours included, just PM me and I'll get rid of it. Also, some news in the next post.

For anyone watching in the wee hours of the night, there has been a Japanese hardware conference going on. There was some good DS stuff announced (summary from GAF)- the release dates are Japanese:
Ok here's a complete summary of the conference: - Tetris: April 3800yen - If you haven't seen this yet, it will likely be the next big thing. New wifi Tetris with new modes and Nintendo themes. It's due out here in March on the same day as Metroid Prime Hunters - Calligraphy Training announced - Cooking Software announced - Children of Mana video shown - Xenosaga video shown - New Super Mario Brothers: May 4800yen I love Pokemon- probably my favorite franchise and there's one coming for the DS soon. Yet, every video I've seen of this makes it my most anticipated game. It's old school 2D Mario goodness in a brand new, original game. - Winning Eleven *cough*paging tk*cough* has online wifi play but not sure it will make it here, tho - Super Robot Wars - Dynasty Warriors - Internet Browser Opera (add-on) Yup, web browsing on the DS, courtesy of Opera - 1Seg Digital TV Card (add-on) Curious about the quality of this, likely Japan only, tho SI

Anyone know anything about having a DS shipped here from Japan? Can one play English games on an imported system without any problems? I only ask because my sister-in-law is in Japan and the DS Lite is being released over there in a couple weeks. I thought about asking her to pick up one for me, but don't know enough about compatibility.

From one particular FAQ: "Q: If I import one like you just said to do, what is the difference? A: For all pratical reasons the US and Japanese DS's are exactly the same, either can play games from any country, and the wireless signals are the same. The ONLY difference is that the default language is set different depending on which one you have." SI

Reading more about the DS Lite today, I'm going to be SERIOUSLY tempted to buy one when they are released in the US (though I'll get one in dark blue, not white or light blue).
I found this today via Engadget at http://www.lik-sang.com/news.php?artc=3808&lsaid=219793 Quote:

Here is something to get excited about
hxxp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pGSdPL8rGg A DS Zelda. I picked one of these things up the other day, sort of as a father/daughter co-present. Thus far all i have is Animal Crossing(came prepackaged). I really haven't played it much, but my 7 year old seems to enjoy it. I think we'll probably get super Princess Peach soon, and that new version of Tetris looks great. Also I need to pick up Mario Kart and Mario 64. |

I meant to bump this thread earlier this week since Zelda and Metroid Prime Hunters came out so that's 2 more major WiFi games.
There's also a new side-scrolling Mario in May SI

Wow. The DS Lite reminds me of a miniature iBook of some sort.
A pity I already have an original which I got for $70, but I'll probably pickup a DS Lite version for myself, and hand off my original to a relative or something. Though, I seriously need to get myself a wireless router...or at least, that USB adapter thing for the meantime. :o

Has anyone got any other games lately? I was kind of geeked for True Swing Golf, i guess it's not that new, but then I read some reviews for it, and they were in the 6's. I'll probably wait for the next version, or one that incorporates internet play.
So, anyone have Tetris or Brain Game? I'm pretty stoked for new Super Mario Brothers as well. |

Is Nintendogs wifi? My daughter has the one with the Golden Retriever and Siberian Husky and was hoping it was wifi so she could unlock other dogs. I would switch from WPA to WEP for this.
We have: Nintendogs Pokemon Trozei (sp?) Tetris (a little disappointing) Princess Peach The DS is soooo great for kids (my daughter just turned 6) and yet has stuff for me (maybe not a good contrast since I'm mentally 5). She loves Nintendogs and has become quite good at winning competitions. It is as close as we are coming to owning a dog. |

I haven't gotten ahold of Tetris or Metroid Prime Hunters or Brain Age yet. Thought about Brain Age since it's only $20 but with my current job I just don't have much time to play each day. When I do play, I've been continuing with Animal Crossing and also playing some Age of Empires, which is quite fun. SI

Nintendogs isn't wifi- it came out before Nintendo WiFi launched, unfortunately. How is Tetris? I played the demo for a half hour or so and, while I loved the new touches, I disliked some as well and don't understand why they can't just get off their arse and include classic Tetris for the nostalgia factor. That said, I'll be snagging it at some point anyway because it does still look like quite a bit of fun. SI

I was hooked big time on classic tetris and this just isn't the same (and to me that is a bad thing). It just feels all wrong. Now, that isn't to say that with repeated playing it won't erase my classic tetris bias, but for now it just doesn't feel right. As for Nintendogs, I knew it could do localized stuff, shame about the wifi. What is so fun about Animal Crossing? I see you all talking about that. |

I think you can unlock all the dogs on nintendogs in any version. Only difference is the starting dogs.
Check the faq here on how to unlock them. hxxp://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/ds/data/926849.html |

I picked up Brain Age and it's alright...really, it's not my cup of tea. It's got a few quirks that drive me bonkers. One is that the voice recognition still kind of sucks. There's one game where you are supposed to say the color of the print on the screen (like if it said red on the screen, you'd have to say "blue" because that's the color of the print). For red, yellow, and black it picks it up fine, but usually I have to say "blue" about 6 times before it registers (without background noise), which makes my score bad (frustrating for me because I like competing with myself and others to get high scores). Similarly, the touchscreen doesn't pick up numbers properly fairly often and seems to pick up stray inputs every now and then (some of this might come from my splint), so I end up getting things wrong (which I shouldn't, and again, drives me nuts). The one reason I could see a lot of people playing it is for Sudoku, which I'm really not into, either, so it's an alright game which I pick up every now and then, but for $20, it wasn't much of a loss, I suppose. I'm looking forward to the new Mario Brothers game, and I might get Tetris when it comes down in price to about $20. Tetris is one of those classic games that they could only "make worse" by re-making it and trying to capture the nostalgia, but it's still a great game. In other news, I saw that the DS Lite details are supposed to come out on Thursday the 4th (see here). Early rumors I read somewhere said it was going to be $150 and be released on 6/21, but I can't seem to track down where I read that rumor. I'll almost undoubtedly get a DS Lite at some point fairly soon after it's released. With all the other issues my hand is having, I think it'll ease some of my other complaints. Anyway. Brain Age is sort of "eh" for me, can't wait for Mario, and will get Tetris and the DS Lite at some point in the forseeable future. /tk

Found the place where I found the rumors on the DS details: Gizmodo.
Linky Our beloved brothers at Kotaku with all of their stellar sources in the retail world tell us that the Nintendo DS Lite will be available in the US on June 21, which also happens to be the first day of summer. The tipster also told Kotaku the first units will be available in white only, and will sell for $150. DS Lite Hits First Day of Summer for $150? [Kotaku] /tk
