TCY/FOF: Coaching Career of Harrison Daniels
2004 UTEP School and Stadium Conference: Western Athletic Conference Prestige: 63 Academic Reputation: 36 Stadium: Sun Bowl Stadium (51,500) 2004 Season Tickets: 20,600 City Economics: Poor Community Loyalty: Decent Alumni Loyalty: Decent Student Goodwill: Very Good AP: UTEP coach Gary Nord fired, Valdosta State DC named replacement -------------------------------- Associated Press EL PASO (AP) - Texas-El Paso football coach Gary Nord has been fired after compiling a 14-34 record in four years. "This was a difficult decision,'' UTEP athletic director Bob Stull said. "Gary is a man of high integrity who has made a lot of positive contributions to UTEP and the city of El Paso, including our first WAC championship.'' However, UTEP had beaten only three Division I opponents in the past three years and finished 2-12 overall this year. "I do not feel we are moving in the right direction,'' Stull said. Stull said after weeks of interviews, Valdosta State defense coordinator, Harrison Daniels would lead the team in the 2004 season. "We're excited to have Mr. Daniels here at UTEP. Although he's a younger guy and this being his first head coaching job, we're confident in his abilities to lead our team to many victories in the future." Harrison Daniels comes from a Valdosta State University team which has compiled a 46-6 record during Daniels' tenure as defense coordinator at the school. That's funny... now there is a UTEP and a New Mexico State dynasty going on at the same time. Nice!

Actually, your dynasty was the inspiration for this one. I usually take mid-major or higher teams in TCY. I'm pretty sure I've never taken over a team as low in prestige as UTEP before. It should be interesting. Good luck with New Mexico State. |

2004 Roster Breakdown
Meet the Team
Code:
Offense outlook: As you can see, not much talent at the QB position. We'll go ahead and start Franks, but if he struggles, it's not out of the question that we could replace him with Jaconetty. Vickery and Newhart will get the nod at RB and FB. We have some depth at the receiving positions, but it won't matter if our QB can't get the ball to them. With 2 seniors at center, that'll be a major recruiting area for us this season. Elsewhere on the O-line, our strength is obviously at the tackle position with Richardson being one of our better players on this year's team. Code:
ST outlook: We'll be counting on Shelton's punting ability to give us an advantage with field position. DiPaolo will be our field goal and kickoff guy. Code:
Defensive outlook: Unsure if we'll be running the 3-4 or 4-3 this season, but I'm currently leaning toward the 3-4. We have some potential on the line. Hopefully we can maximize that potential going into next season with our training regime. Secondary will be our strength of the current defense. I'll be counting on them to shut down the pass. |

UTEP has a long way to go talent-wise, but your roster is a tad bit better than my NMSU squad. Good luck!

2004 UTEP Preview
Here's a look at the UTEP 2004 schedule:
Code:
2004 Outlook: The WAC is far from stacked talent-wise, but we're at the lower tier of the conference. Coming off a 2-11 season, I'll be happy if we can match those 2 wins this year. I was contemplating putting in a new offensive system, but with Cris Murray's 5 year experience with the T-formation, I've decided to stick with it. I'll make adjustments next season if I see fit. |

Good luck with your Miners. It looks like Coach Daniels has some decent younger players, so if he gets through Year One and recruits well, the UTEP program could be on the rise.
I'll be reading and following. Great start so far! |

UTEP @ #41 Arizona State (-15) In our opening game of the season, we went into a hot and muggy Tempe to face a much more talented ASU team. I'm not sure what I can say that the stats below won't tell you. Well, atleast we had less turnovers than they did. Coming from the defensive side of the ball in my career, it was painful to watch the ASU offense rack up almost 600 yards of total offense. Obviously my work here is going to be a bit tougher than I initially expected. Code:

UTEP (0-1) @ McAllen (0-1) (-3) A much better result this week, albeit against Solecismic Eight competition, but a win is a win and I'll take it. McAllen really shot themselves in the foot with turnovers and penalities. Our rushing attack was crisp totalling 241 yards. OC Murray asked me after the game what I thought about his offense and I was impressed. I'm not sold on the T-formation yet, but I liked what I saw when we were executing. Unfortuantely, we lost 2 starters in the game to injuries. ILB Grisham will be out 14 weeks with a broken jaw and WR Ellis will miss a few weeks with a hyperextended knee. Code:

#38 Boise State (2-0) (-1) @ UTEP (1-1) We come back down to earth after gaining our first win, losing this one big to Boise State 47-10. I wasn't expecting to win against the WAC favorite, but I thought we could've given them more of a game than this. 5 first downs and 0/11 on third down conversions. Yikes. Luckily next week is a bye, so we'll go back to the drawing board. New Mexico State is next on the schedule and is definitely a winnable game for us. Code:

New Mexico State (1-3) @ UTEP (1-2 (-5) With the win today, we've already matched last year's win total. I'm happy for our kids, but we've got a long way to go before we're competitive on any sort of national level. New Mexico State's secondary made Franks look like a Heisman candidate. Vickery and Maloney were running over their defense all day. We still haven't had a complete game on defense since the McAllen game which is disheartening. Next week is 2-2 Fresno State at their house. They're a middle of the road WAC team, so we'll see what this team is made of against some better competition. Code:

UTEP (2-2) @ Fresno State (2-2) (-7) Going on the road to Fresno State and getting a win is huge for our team and the UTEP program. They have the talent, but we played our most complete game of the year so far. I was especially proud of the way our defense played with only allowing 244 yards of total offense. Vickery and Maloney continue to be our workhorses on offense. Next week is rivalary week with 3-1 Hawaii coming to El Paso. Code:

Hawaii (3-1) (-2) @ UTEP (3-2) In a game where we started out slow, we came out in the second half and dominated rivals Hawaii. Hawaii uncharacteristicly gave up 4 turnovers and we took full advantage of their mistakes. Comparing this team that was blown out at Arizona State in our first game to now sitting at 4-2, it's nothing short of a miracle. Looking ahead at our schedule, it's not improbable that we could be looking at a winning season here in my first season at UTEP. Code:

UTEP (4-2) @ Louisiana Tech (3-3) (-3) A second half surge by Louisiana Tech hands us our third loss of the season. Disappointing as this was a very winnable game for us, but we couldn't move the ball on offense worth a damn in the second half. Hats off to Louisiana Tech who fought back to get the win. A costly INT by Franks early in the third quarter which gave LATC all the momementum they needed to finish the game. Next week we travel to lowly 1-5 San Jose State. Code:

RECRUITING (AS OF WEEK 10)
Coming into the season, we had 28 available scholarships. Of course with TCY only allowing up to 16 per year, we'll have our hands full with recruiting for the next few years. So far the steal of the class to be is TE Harvey. He's not the smartest crayon in the box, but he can play football. Coming from Central HS in Phoenix, Arizona, in 9 games played, he's had 35 receptions for 518 yards with 9 TD. With 7 spots remaining, we're hoping that we can fill up the class very soon. Code:

UTEP (4-3) (-6) @ San Jose State (1-5) The fact that we struggled so mightily against one of the worst offense's in the country certainly worries me. With San Jose's third quarter surge, I thought I was seeing a repeat of last week with Louisiana Tech. Fortunately for us, our defense buckled down in the fourth and our offense cranked it up. I was especially proud of our O-line has they paved the way for Vickery going for 184 yards on the ground and only allowing 2 sacks. Next week is a bye and I'll be hitting the recruiting trail hard. TV 5: Rice (7-2) (-3) @ UTEP (5-3) Our boys gave it their all, but we come up short in this one 10-7. I thought we had their backs up against the wall in the first half. We drew first blood and I never thought we were out of the game against a more talented Rice team. Vickery has another 100+ yard game and Franks really surprised me going 12/19 for 213 yards. I gotta give a lot of credit to their defense, though. They were bending, but they didn't break. Next week 3-7 SMU comes to town which will our last home game of the season. Code:

SMU (3-7) @ UTEP (5-4) (-6) We jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in this one. Although against a less talented SMU squad, I thought this was an important game to see how we'd bounce back after that tough loss to Rice. After the first quarter, it was apparent our boys came to win today and I was pleased with our overall performance. We controlled the time of possession with our running attack and SMU never had a chance. Code:

UTEP (6-4) (-8) @ Tulsa (2-8) By far one of the worse offensive showings in the past few weeks. We couldn't establish the run the way we wanted, but I guess a win is a win. Tulsa was able to keep Vickery under 100 yards running which is a testament to their run defense. As I said, it wasn't a pretty win and we most certainly benefited from Tulsa's four turnovers. We'll finish the season at 7-4 and see if we can get a bowl invitation. Code:

2004 SEASON REVIEW
All in all, I couldn't have asked for a better first year. We played relatively smart football on the offensive side of the ball, as you can see by our +18 in turnover margin. I stressed smart and disciplined football and the kids really bought in. Coming into the season, I was counting on 2, maybe 3 wins. 7 wins and a winning record is quite unbelievable. I either overestimated the WAC or I underestimated my group of players. Our OOC schedule was pretty weak. I intend on trying to schedule some bigger Texas and midwestern schools next season if I can. Recruiting was fairly weak as we finished dead last in the TCY Today rankings. That's an issue I'm concerned about in the future. On the bright side, we snagged a lot of smart players who'll help our academic reputation. Speaking of academics, our team this year finished with a cumulative 3.05 GPA, which I'm very proud of. I have some personnel decisions to make in the offseason. The previous coaching staff was retained for a 1 year contract so I could take time to properly re-evaluate in my first offseason here at UTEP. 2004 END OF SEASON GRADES Code:

UTEP offensive lineman took money, will sit out 2005 season January 9, 2005 El Paso - Ricky Harvey, an offensive guard for the University of Texas at El Paso, has been suspended for the upcoming 2005 season for accepting money from a member of the booster club. Harvey, who started all 11 games last season for the Miners, will certainly be missed on the offensive line as he was the only returning lineman with starting experience. Coach Daniels was quoted on a local sports talk radio show as saying, "It's unfortunate. Ricky displayed a terrible sense of judgment and now he'll have to pay the price of sitting out his senior season." Last edited by Recoil : 01-14-2010 at 03:31 PM. |

UTEP fires OC Murray, DC Gallardo January 11, 2005 El Paso - Coach Daniels has decided not to renew the contracts of offensive coordinator Cris Murray and defensive coordinator Herb Gallardo. It was no surprise to hear the firing of Gallardo, but Coach Daniels was expected to renew Murray's contract as the two seemed to form a friendship and compliment each other well on the football field. Cris Murray had spent 5 seasons with UTEP running the T-formation, which has become well known at the university. Herb Gallardo had been with the school for the past 4 seasons. Mr. Daniels wasted no time in replacing both coordinators. UTEP has secured 2-year deals with offensive coordinator Barry Thompson, formerly the backs and receiving coach from Middle Tennessee State and also defensive coordinator Clay Figures, the 67 year old veteran who has spent the past 8 seasons at James Madison University. "I felt we needed to go in a new direction. A new beginning. I became good friends with both Cris Murray and Herb Gallardo during my first year here in El Paso, but I feel I needed to start putting my own stamp on the program here at UTEP," Daniels said in a press release. "Mr. Thompson and Mr. Figures are great acquisitions for our coaching staff. I'm excited to see what we accomplish together in 2005." Last edited by Recoil : 01-14-2010 at 03:43 PM. |

UTEP signs 3 year extension with Harrison Daniels January 15, 2005 El Paso - The University of Texas at El Paso athletic director Bob Stull announced at a press conference today that the university has come to terms with Harrison Daniels for a 3 year contract extension. Financial terms were not discussed, but it's rumored the contract is worth around $325,000 per year. "We're pleased to announce today the restructured contract extension of Coach Daniels. It's a 3 year extension, which means Mr. Daniels will be under contract at UTEP for 5 total years. We believe he's made substantial strides in his first year at the university and he's more than deserving of this extension. To say that the 2004 season was a success would be an understatement," remarked athletic director Bob Stull during the press conference. "I'm thankful for all the support we had this past season," Coach Daniels said. "The university and the city of El Paso have been nothing but welcoming to myself and my family. For that, I have a lot to be thankful for. I'm confident in our team that we can perform as well as we did last year. UTEP fans have a lot to look forward to. I see myself coaching here at UTEP for a long time." |

Here's a look at the UTEP 2005 schedule:
Code:
2004 Outlook: Once again the WAC, looking at an overall prospective, isn't that strong excluding Boise State. It looks like we'll permanently have Texas Tech on our schedule. We also went out and scheduled a game in Austin against Texas. It should be interesting to see our guy's play against the big boys. Last year my expectations were very low. I definitely didn't foresee a 7-4 season. With that being said, I have no idea how this year will play out. Likely losses against Texas, Texas Tech and Boise State, but other than that, I think we should be able to compete. As a first year head coach, I struggled with recruiting so that'll be one of my main focuses for the upcoming season. |
