Earthquake in Turkey & Syria

What a horrible disaster. The death toll is going to be horrific on this one. 3,000 buildings have collapsed. Awful. Devastation on a scale that is hard to imagine.

Yeah especially in Syria I think given they are still recovering from a war, and won't have what's needed to deal with this on top of that

The videos of twenty story buildings collapsing in 5 seconds is insane. First earthquakes was a 7.8 and second was a 7.5.

Looks like a former Premiership forward, Christian Atsu, is missing and believed trapped in some if the rubble.

Meanwhile his Turkish club has denied that he (or their sporting director) have been found.

The Guardian has, so far, stuck by their found & hospitalized story and even updated it. Turkish reports are sticking, so far, with the club version of it.

Türkiye has asked and NATO should definitely send all the aid they ask for. Horrendous event

I'm a little surprised that the Christian extremist contingent hasn't commented on this being punishment by God for their 'false' beliefs.

One day later, up to 21,000

I’m guessing this will be like a Top 20 quake

My wife has a Turkish guy that works for her. He has friends there who are volunteering with the rescue missions. He told her it is way worse and they are only counting people who had ID on them in the death toll.

Looked it up and not yet in Top 25 for deaths.

Most recently, 223k for the 2010 Haiti quake. And 225+k for the 2004 Indonesian earthquake/tsunami.

Deadliest Earthquakes on Record

Up to 36,000 now

Below is strange, you’d think there is plenty of work in other areas if there are security concerns in one area. Why leave the country when there is obviously a lot of recovery (and maybe some rescue) to do?

Quote:
Germany sent 50 recovery experts to Turkey last Tuesday, to locate and rescue victims. The country suspended its rescue and relief operations on Saturday, citing security concerns in the Hatay region, according to a statement issued by the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief.

They haven't left, far as stories from yesterday indicated, they returned to their base camp. The Austrians paused as well, until the Turkish Army took responsibility for their security. (Meanwhile in Syria, operations by their own workers ended in rebel controlled areas because they no longer felt safe to work, especially since they no longer believed it was rescue but just recovery)

Best I can tell, when you say "Hatay region" that covers pretty much all the area of Turkey that had rescue/recovery work going on. It's a full-on region, not just a city or something.

There's got to be an odd story there between the "is he/isn't he dead" where some people with the team reported him dead while others reported him alive.

SI
