FOF 2007: Rebirth of Coach K - Call me GM K

After the Steelers "won" the Super Bowl chaos ensued in the football world. Scandal rocked the league's leadership. Players sued to be released from their contracts and for a new CBA. Eventually things began to clea up under new league leadership and the players sat down to work out a new agreement.

The terms of the agreement, not much different that their old one (so they didn't have the greatest representative) and they were released from their current contracts.

Sadly the players did not read what their representative was about to accept. As they prepared for becoming free agents and had thoughts of big bucks dancing through their heads, the ownership group slipped in one small phrase. "After the effective release of the players from their contract there will be a league wide draft for the services of all players." So much for the big free agency dollars.

Elsewhere many teams found new GM's and coaches to hedlp lead them to that coveted Super Bowl win. Back in Oakland, Al Davis was being his normal eccentric self and interviewed someone to take over as the Raiders new GM. This would mark the return of a man who's name alone elicits a response from most football fans, but not a good response. A man who once led an Eagles team full of potential Super Bowl talent to an early playoff exit. A man who led the Jets to their worst season ever. This marks the return of Rich Kotite to the NFL.

The announcement by Al Davis actually drew some laughter from the reporters at the press conference. To which Kotite's response was "that's just bizarre" and that he was "without question" the best man for the job. Raiders fans everywhere sobered up and considered getting a job, it was a rude awakening.

One fan was even quoted as saying "what better playoffs or number one pick duscuss". The reporter who submitted that quote to press was promptly fired and now works for public broadcasting somewhere. Elsewhere fans were heard saying "you know, Brady's arm was moving forward..." It was sheer chaos and lawlessness in Raider Nation.

There were side affects noticed outside of the football world. One political leader was even heard saying "nukular? have I sounded that stupid this whole time?" Elsewhere liberals actually began to love America. Who knew that life could turn upside down because of one announcement? Who knew that a couple shots of Hennessy could lead to such a strange dynasty introduction? Who knows what lies ahead?

Who... okay, time to get to the actual dynasty. I figured this would give me something to do in my complete down time over here and this weekend was a good enough time to start.

Time to Draft up a Team

With the selection of Tom Brady by the Green Bay Packers (which oddly received a cheer from Eli Manning) the draft was underway. The Raiders had to wait until the seventh pick (as the order was completely random).

1. Kotite made it no mystery that he was looking to go with a quarterback early and he saw only Brady and Peyton Manning get taken off the board before his first pick. As the Raiders were on the clock Kotite decisively jumped to the podium and went with a risky pick of a rookie quarterback in Matt Leinart. He said he wants a team that will perform well for a long time and not just a quick fix.

2. Next was offensive line as he drafted center LeCharles Bentley to anchor the line.

3. Raiders fans began to worry as he went with yet another rookie in left tackle Winston Justice next.

4. With his 3rd rookie in 4 rounds, coach K pick up runningback Laurence Maroney.

5. Time to give Leinart a target next with wide receiver Deon Branch.

6. Back to the rookies but on the defensive side with defensice end Tamba Hali. Coach K liikes youth I guess? Is he actually going to stay around their careers though?

7. He remained on the defensive side of the ball with linebacker Daryl Smith.

8. He lands a veteran to anchor his secondary next with safety Tony Parrish.

9. Back to the offensive line with guard Edwin Mulitalo.

10. He went with a rookie that he hopes will be a big play receiver next with Marques Colston. So far his offense seems to have future potential.

11. Young tackle Alex Barron got the call next has coach K has almost fleshed out his starting offensive line.

12. Back to the defensive side with another rookie in defensive end Mark Anderson.

13. Safety Wil Demps is the next Raider selection. So far those safeties may be busy with the lack of defensice selections.

14. Rookie guard Erik Herrin finished the offensive line "starters" with his next pick and yet another rookie.

15. The next selection brought a very dissatisfied reaction from the fans as he went for a kicker, Nate Kaeding.

16. He made a nice selectikon next with cornerback Lito Sheppard who was still on the board.

17. Staying with the cornback theme he also returned to his rookie theme with Adam Doyle.

18. Remaining on the defensive side he went with linebacker Napoleon Harris.

19. He returned to a controversial selection next with punter Andy Lee. He went young and talented with his kicking game but probably way too early.

20. Next up was a veteran fullback in Mike Alstott, someone to open some holes.

21. Rookie tight end next with Anthony Fasona. This team has a lot of potential if they can live up to it, offensively. The question is how long until they reach that potential and will GM K be around long enough.

22. Their first defensive tackle in Kendrick Clancy is next. They may struggle mightily on the defensive side of the ball.

23. Rookie linebacker Gerris Wilkinson gets the call next as he closes in on having his "starters" selected.

24. Rookie defensive tackle Lance Bartell fills out what could be the starters.

The rest of the draft becomes a blur of seemingly scrolling text to Raiders fans as the roster gets fleshed out...

I apologize for all the space. I did everything that I could think of and in WYIWYG it looks fine but the space still shows up.

EF27, what did you do different with your Eagles dynasty? I don't see the empty space in your post with the roster.

Training Camp

As the team prepares for their preseason the fans begin to size up just how GM K did with his rookie gambles.

QB Matt Leinart looks to be very rough around the edges but has a ton of potential if he can live up to it.

RB Laurence Maroney has amazing breakaway speed and can power through the middle as good as anyone in the league. He needs work on receiving and his endurance has come into question.

FB Steven Kelly was a late round pick and backup and looks like a decent blocker but don't expced the ball in his hands.

TE Anthony Fasano has the potential to be one of the best blocking tight ends in the league but needs to work on his route running and hands to make him a long term solution.

FL Marques Colston looks like a homerun hitter but needs to work on his hads quite a bit.

SE Chad Cook is a backup who was a late round pick and looks like nothing more than roster filler.

RG Xavier Schulze looks like a project but if he progresses could be a capable player to add depth.

RG Erik Herrin also looks like a big project but shows that he could have a very bright upside.

LT Winston Justice looks like he will be the real deal but has some work to do. He does bring an attitude problem but that may just make him a Raider.

LT Sherman McInnis is a very late round pick and nothing more than an emergency roster filler.

LDE Tamba Hali has a lot of potential and may be a terror for quarterbacks with his speed around the end.

LDE Brock Pascal has a lot of work to do but looks like a solid late round find who could be a good option to spell the starters and provice nice depth.

RDE Mark Anderson looks to have the pass rushing down but needs to work on his run defense.

LDT Jarred Brennan will be roster filler.

RDT Shane Fletcher has a lot of work to do but could provide good depth if he can improve.

RDT Lance Bartell has a little potential but not a great upside overall.

MLB Everett Hawthorn was a late mid round pick that may be a decent backup.

MLB Dan Doyle will be little more than a backup and emergency filler.

WLB Gerris Wilkinson may turn into an average player but doesn't appear to be anything special.

LCB Adam Doyle has decent potential but a long way to go to get there.

FS Don Reese (changes position from SS) looks to have little future.

The jury is still out but it can't be a good sign for this season to have 21 rookies on your team and 11 of them as your starters (though it could be a great sign for the future if they can afford them later).

2006 Preseason

The preseason began with a game that almost single handedly cost GM K his job (it's not like Al Davis is a stable person) as they lost the preseason opener to the Eagles in a game where their offense had 7 first downs and 115 total yards. Their best quarterback performance earned an eye popping 24.3 rating, the worst was 6.2. The only bright side was defensively and special teams as they produced the two touchdowns the Raiders scored.

From there things got better as some of the youngsters showed a little flare at times and hlped the team go 3-2 in the preseason. Injuries did not play a major role in the preseason.

As preseason comes to a close and the regular season is around the corner the team is almost 100% healthy with only a few minor probable injuries. The tough decision will be the 7 players to inactivate for the season opener.

After a tough night of deciding, GM K handed down the list to coach Rusty Wilkerson. The names on the list were:

RB Artose Pinner - did very little in his limited action

TE Ernie Conwell - A tough decision but GM K did not want to go with 3 active tight ends.

LG Claude Terrell - Showed little ability to actually block, a prerequisite for the job.

LT Anthony Davis - Needs more work.

MLB Dan Doyle - A tough decision but for the wrong reason as he did not want to have only one active middle linebacker so he had to chose just one to deacticvate.

WLB Wesly Mallard - Close to being cut.

RCB Roderick Hood - A very tough decision.

2006 Week 1

San Diego (0-0) -9 at Oakland (0-0)
68, calm and sunny

Code:

Being outgained 378-195 (37:07 to 22:53 time of possession) in your home opener and only manageing a field goal is not the way to go as they open the season at 0-1. There was nothing good to speak of in this game as far as the overall team play goes as they managed just a field goal.

Leinart had a dreadful debut as did most players. The few bright spots were the 12 reception performance from Deion Branch and the 12 tackles and a forced fumble by Tony Parrish.

Sadly, Matt Leinart had a severe wrist sprain in the game and could miss up to 4 weeks. Dan Orlovsky will take over in his absence which does not leave the fans with much hope for the season as a bad start for this young team will most likely not be able to be recovered from.

I've had that happen numerous times during my dynasty. I keep forgetting this feature...

Have to be more careful in the future.
