Most creative school nickname?
Every school has a nickname. The Broncos, the Pirates, or even the Patriots. But what nicknames do you think are some of the most original or very creative? I was thinking more along the lines of highschools, but if you know of a small college that has a unique name, please let us know.
Just to start things off, I will post my favorite school nickname in Oklahoma. The Midwest City Bombers It's original, and very fitting, since MWC is home to Tinker Airforce Base.

West Plains Zyzzers, I believe. I have no idea why they're named that.

Every year we are treated to a few interesting names in the NCAA men's basketball tournament - Jaspers, Catamounts, Hilltoppers, Purple Eagles, Ragin' Cajuns, and so forth. I have a friend who convenes a "committee" of old pals each year on the Sunday night when they announce the brackets - their mission is to select the best two-team matchup solely based on the team nicknames.

for a while their colors were pink & purple. It was what the student body did to show the then president of the school how they felt about funding to sports and not school at a time. The 'Chokes name stuck, but the colors are now green & silver I believe |

My high school...
Kaukauna Ghosts. Or the Galloping Ghosts for all you Red Grange fans. Other High School names from Wisconsin: Kimberly Paper Makers (hornet) Monroe Cheese Makers (near Madison) I always wanted to know what a Zypher was. Besides a car, I noticed some catholic schools use this name.

Sov might also be aware of these high schools. Can't remember which one was in MN and which was in ND.
Ayr Rifles and the Cando Odnacs. (Odnacs is Cando spelled backwards if you couldn't figure it out.)

I suppose it's more just funny than creative, but when I was in Arkansas, I saw the "Ozark High Hillbillies"

My mom grew up in Cando, ND. Never heard of Ayr before, but I guess it's in ND too. A search on the town brought me to a 2000 census number of 23. How'd you hear about that one? |

Funny you should say that, as my high school's nickname was the Hillbillies. Of course the joke of it being that my town is in suburban New Jersey, and there's nothing Hillbillesque about it, other than the fact it is on the sides of two hills. The best part about it was that the mascot, until the late 80s or early 90s, was a Hillbilly with a shotgun and bottle of moonshine. Somebody eventually decided that wasn't the most approriate symbol for a high school team, so they made it a fishing poll instead of rifle and dog instead of bottle of moonshine. Now, the new superintendant doesn't even like that idea and wanted to rename all the teams the "Maroon and White" after our colors. Many alumni and townspeople have protested and as of yet, he has been unable to institute the change. |

I grew up in SD, lived for a while in ND. Actually went to school at Moorhead State for a year. So I would see the exit for the town on the interstate and one of my friends said that their mascot was the Rifles. So I've always gone with it.
