Laptop PC Issue Troubleshoot / verification Question

I think I have a major system failure on my laptop.

I can be working the thing just shuts off. No warnings, no blue screens.

When I boot it back up, it wants to run a check disk. I let it go through, it has the 3 index processes it wants to run, it passes through the first two and crashes before it gets to the third and then shuts off.

I am not getting any error messages when it goes down, it just goes down. Anyone have any knowledge of tests or anything I can run?

Sounds like a heat issue to me and the comp is shutting itself off to prevent serious damage. Is the fan working and clean?

I blew it out last week and it is still happening, is there a log anywhere on the PC I can read to find out why?

There is a program called coretemp you can download for free and that will at least let you see what the temp is before the computer crashes.

Core Temp

If it is not too high then we can at least rule out overheating. Just make sure you decline all the extra stuff when installing it.

Ok...I was able to get the following after launching a game and playing for 5 minutes:

My GPU shot up to like 85 Celsius 80% load.

85 degrees would be pretty normal for gaming on a laptop, nor is that hot or dangerous enough to shut your system down.

85C is like 185F. That can't be good for any computer.

OP: Have you considered a chill pad of some sort to dissipate the heat faster?

Your hard drive might be going out. You might want to download one of the bootable diag discs and run some checks.

Alright,

I tried to make it limp along, it finally overheated for what I thought was the last time yesterday.

So what the hell, I took the machine apart, completely apart, down to pulling out the motherboard.

I honestly found a dusty bunny that was clogged in my exhaust system the size of a small mouse...it was thick and caked on. I cleaned it out, cleaned everything out to the best of my abilities using canned air and even a qtip on the one grill for my exhaust.

It still runs to me at high temps sometimes. I ordered a chill mat for it and that should be here tomorrow.

Yep.. I would guess a heating issue. We typically replace the heat sink and fan on issues like you are having. Those should be relatively cheap.
