I know maybe not as huge nationally, but really big locally (even to today, it's mentioned), but I'll go ahead and throw in the onside kick call between Oklahoma and Oregon. Maybe if there was no replay, it would have been excusable, but to not see on the replay that the Oregon player illegally touched it first was really bad. Then the pass interference called when the pass was tipped later in the game-winning drive, also reviewed and not overturned.

The 1997 Nebraska kicked ball was also terrible. Ended up keeping Michigan from a unanimous NC.

Just watched this on youtube - I don't understand how nobody else seemed to notice that it was fifth down either. The announcers didn't notice, the Missouri players didn't seem to notice. Did the Missouri coaches try to bring it to the ref's attention?

Mick McGeough called a clean face-off win by Horcoff a "glove pass", negating an apparent game-tying goal in the closing seconds of a game between Edmonton and Dallas a few seasons back.

Another call that I always thought was awful, although I'm not sure many agree, was way back when Steve Young played for San Fran and they were up against Chicago in the playoffs. Young ran into the endzone and was hit immediately. Steve Young immediately hit the mud and was stuck there. A penalty flag was thrown for late hit/unnecessary roughness. Yet, over entire seasons, I see this same kind of hit happen dozens of times, even to QBs (and have never seen a flag thrown for it since or before that game).

Unclear. The question mark is what happened on first down, because that's one the down marker official didn't flip to second down. Some sources say Missouri coaches and players asked about the down marker during the timeout. They said the explanation was that the officials ruled that the first down play (when Johnson spiked the ball) didn't count because the ball was properly set. That's obviously hogwash.

The fact that it was fifth down completely obscured the question of whether Johnson actually broke the play before he was down. The replays seem to suggest that his shoulder or arm was down before he twisted the ball over the plane.

The Fifth Down, The Flea Kicker ... all just another day in paradise for a Missouri fan.

5th down has to be one of the worst. That's not even a judgement call that someone can potentially see incorrectly. That's just paying attention to the game.

Also, the Ravens being robbed by a blown replay. The ref looked at the wrong thing in the replay and that is obvious by how he announced the resuilt of the replay. You don't announce the feet being down if you were looking to see where the ball was.

The Seahawks getting robbed by a blown replay in the Super Bowl.

The Seahawks getting robbed by Vinny's helmet seemingly counting the same as the ball.

The Immaculate Reception? Wasn't there controversy if it hit the receiver first and went right to Harris; which would make it an illegal play at that time?

Wasn't there a coin toss in OT of a football game where the referee screwed up the call? The one team called heads and it came up heads but the ref thought he called tails. Something like that?

Yeah, it's on the list. Jerome Bettis mumbled tails, the ref said it was heads and gave the ball to the Lions. This is why they call the toss and announce the call prior to the actual tossing of the coin now.

Some I really remember:

Kordell Stewart's TD (he was out of bounds and came back in) in the AFC Championship game against Indy in 95.

Larry Johnson's four point play against the Pacers in the 99 Eastern Conference Finals.

Hated the steelers and knicks ever since.

Its about half-way in ... team score, opposition player even catches the ball as it bounces out of the net BUT the referee decides it never went in AND ignores the player having caught the ball to allow a play-on ....

PS - Soccer fans spot the young Duncan Ferguson playing before he became infamous for being the first footie player to be sent to prison for an on-pitch offense ... always kinda liked him myself, not least because he once caught two people breaking into his home and managed to (as the papers said) detain one of them ... who subsequently required 3 days in hospital to recover (thats some sort of detaining

).

Except every single call, with the exception of the call after the Pit int, was proven to be correct via replay. Perhaps if the Seahawks wanted to win that game, Jerramy Stevens should have caught one of the half-dozen balls he dropped.

That was still the most exciting World Series ever IMO.

I vote any call in the NFL that involves instant replay. They cant overturn calls in the most meaningful games of the season because lack of evidence so why dont they just abolish the whole fucking thing.

Finger points directly at the Saints/Vikings overtime the past postseason.

Up until that point, none of my pro sports teams had ever won a championship, so that play stung really badly for me. Finally the Braves won in 96, but that's it for any of the teams.. so moments like that tend to remain for a very long time
