RIP Jose Fernandez

It has been confirmed that Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez died in a boating accident this morning.

Stunned. So sad, so young. What a good pitcher.

Just tragic. Barely 24, full life ahead of him, and now he's gone. Escaped Cuban after spending a year in prison for trying to leave, and had saved his mom from drowning when she fell of the boat. Just a bright light that has been snuffed out too soon.

Brings back memories of Crews and Olin. I'm guessing alcohol will be a factor. Such a great pitcher gone.

I am absolutely shocked and completely saddened by this news. Fernandez also just recently announced his GF is pregnant. What a terrible and tragic loss. This reminds me abit of Nick Adenhart, who had also been a tremendously talented young man taken way too soon.

RIP Jose.

Devastating to see someone who had come so far, and seemed to have the world in his hand, lost so unexpectedly.

There seems to be an element of fast life with Cuban players. Not all obviously but Puig's off season habits aren't a secret and Chapman has about a million speeding tickets

Consider the world they came from, now put them in the world we live in, now give them as much money as they need to do whatever they want. It's not too much of a stretch.

The boat picture looks pretty bad, at least the one from the distance. The spokesperson just said that the owner of the boat is well know to the Marlin players and has been stopped before by the Fish and Game for safety violations.

I just off the phone with a childhood friend who did community work with Jose. Man, this is crushing the local community. He was from Cuba, he graduated from high school in Tampa but that kid was Miami man. The love that kid showed for that community could only be surpassed by the love they had for him. Brutal brutal loss.

I'm sure this loss is most acute in his community, but this is also a loss for any baseball fan. Fernandez had an incredible start to his MLB career and looked like he could be an all-time great, and now that's ended before he even hit his athletic prime. A huge loss for baseball.

Devastating. One of the things that makes it a little more tragic is that his start got pushed back a day - presumably he's not out boating until the wee hours of the morning if he's still starting the next day. RIP

All the Marlins will wear #16 tonight.

No one will ever wear #16 in a Marlin uniform after tonight.

Thank you to Rob Manfred and MLB for allowing this tribute.

I don't think this is a terrible surprise, but of course, it makes it even more tragic in that it was all so avoidable.

I'm a little confused by this. Of course it could have happened. Still, the three made a poor decision, and unfortunately it cost he and his friends their lives. It doesn't mean he wasn't a good guy or a great pitcher or anything. It also doesn't mean we can't learn from it.

You are much more likely to die if you are under the influence in a motor vehicle. It could have been prevented. Sober people don't drive a boat into a jetty at 2:00 am in Florida very often.

One of the other two in the boat also had cocaine in his system, and both had alcohol (though apparently neither were above the legal limit).

I just hope he's not under consideration for Comeback Player of the Year in 2017.
