Love Monkey...Shameless Plug

If you've watched the NFL playoffs, you've no doubt seen the previews for the new CBS show Love Monkey. It premieres tonight on CBS at 10 PM. The show is a cross between High Fidelity, Jerry McGuire and Sex in the City for guys.

Anyhow, the show is produced by one of my best friends (he jokingly gave me permission to call myself a consultant for the show, as he's called me several times during filming to ask me a sports related question that's come up (one of the character's is a sportscaster)). The show has only been picked up for eight episodes, and though it has received "critical acclaim," they need viewers for it to be picked up next fall. So, if you haven't been too turned off by Dick Enberg reading promos for it after every television time out, give it a shot.

Here are some relevant links and reviews:

Not a big fan of the previews.

I liked Ed though mainly for Julie Bowen.

Having seen the pilot, I don't think the previews are a very good representation of the show. But even so, it may not be your cup o' tea, which is fine. (And I will agree that Judy Greer is no Julie Bowen.)

It's more intelligent television than the vast majority of what is out there today (but that may not be a very high standard). It's also a major departure from CBS's normal programming of all Bruckheimer mystery shows all the time.

I liked Tom Cavanagh a lot in Ed, and will be watching tonight... and next week... so hopefully it will be good before I get my TiVo in 2 weeks when I have to start deciding what stuff to tape and watch and what to not bother with.

yeah, I loved Ed - so I will definitely give it a shot. I'll definitely at least Tivo it - though sadly, no Julie Bowen..

From the brief previews it looked a lot like a TV version of High Fidelity... But when it crosses the pond, as it undoubtedly will, I'll give it a look

I was going to chastise you for confusing Tom Cavanagh with the lead on Scrubs, Zach Braff, but then I remembered that Cavanagh was on Scrubs as a guest star playing Braff's older brother. Oops. So, why make this post then, you may ask?

Simple. Post count.

If you want men to watch it make him a secret agent and retitle it Love Gunn

Fair point. CBS wanted to change the title, but they fought to keep it as Love Monkey (the book on which the show is based has the same title).

I'm planning to give it a shot. I loved Ed and I like Tom Cavanaugh.

And yes, Julie Bowen is super hot. That's probably why I liked Happy Gilmore. I want to take her ice skating.

The show looks OK enough to me, but I can't help but think the title alone will help sink it. I don't know what they were thinking.

funny you say that, I was gonna comment about Happy Gilmore. The Julie Bowen of Ed didn't do much for me. The Julie Bowen of Happy Gilmore on the other hand, yowza!

They've got the concepts all wrong.

Love Monkey should be with Jenna Elfman in various states of undress. Courting Alex should be some other hot chick trying to pick up Ed in various states of undress.

Emily's Reasons Not To Watch This Show should be 30 minutes of Carrot Top.

The kid (Teddy Geiger) that Ed is trying to sign to his independent record label on this show, is from Rochester so I will have to give it a watch and take it from there.

My Tuesday show will and always will be "House" on Fox. The one-liners in that show are unbelievable. It is a completely underrated show with some decent female talents

The title is absolutely going to kill it. People (especially men) aren't going to admit to other people that they watch something called "Love Monkey". There'll be no good word of mouth because people won't hear anything expect that title.

Good point, I will have to record on the DVR. With 24, Sopranos, House (soon enough) and college hoops my TV schedule is starting to get maxed out. I am good for about an hour of TV per night.

House is a great show. Formulaic as all get out, but still very entertaining. I don't think it's "completely underrated". Hugh Laurie just won a Golden Globe (justly deserved) and the show is very well received and quite popular. I think it's a properly rated show. While I am not a fan of Cameron, I likes me some Cuddy and you can never go wrong with Sela Ward.

I'll give this "Love Monkey" a shot for you and your mate, Digamma. The previews looked all right enough. I'll also be keeping a careful eye on all sports related references. A very careful eye...

I guess my only basis for saying that House is underrated is that no one I know watches it. This really surprises me because the wittiness of the show is right inline with most of my friends' sense of humor.

Look for the Boomer Esiason episode.

One of the others is very brief. There's a clip of a basketball game and a reference to the game. I guess there are only a few outlets for obtaining clips of games for things like this, so they were limited in which game they could get. Let's just say the initial choices weren't very good for fitting into the script.

That's funny you mention that, because I don't know anyone (either than me and Lady H_B) that watch it either. Apparently a lot of people do... just don't know any of them.

I knew I would have a hard time not thinking Ed when I watched this, but then the pilot had the loss of job / breakup on the same day happen again.

If he buys a bowling alley next, I'm done.
