Thanks. A nervous minute or two out here.
I'm ok, though a bit woozy and both literally and figuratively shaken up. Last edited by digamma : 12-22-2003 at 02:45 PM. |

Boy, even Rex gets asked but not me. Im surprised Kippy didn't get asked either. LOL.
I actually didn't feel here in the Pasadena area. I saw it on a post on the UCLA recruiting site and my brother changed the channel to news. 6.5 is significant, but not "the big one" everyone projects. Maybe a precursor |

I'm just waiting for the first idiot on CNN, FOX, or some other 24/7 news network to speculate if al-Qaida might have somehow been involved.

Here in downtown Los Angeles, I just felt a slight sway of the building. And I sit on the 8th floor of a low-rise building (22 stories). No damage, from what I can see.

I'm on the 40th floor of a building, so that may be why I felt it more than you, Bug. We had significant swaying of the building and a couple of office doors slam shut. Got everyone pretty riled up, but no damage reported thus far.

I believe Franklinnoble, like me, lives in Northern California. I didn't feel it here, but I'm pretty far away. Of course, so is LA from the reported epicenter.

I'm not sure what surprises me more. That A) SkyDog forgot I lived in SoCal, or B) MrBug forgot me, too, and even mentioned kippy before me; or C) that Franklinnoble and kippy both live in NorCal and aren't anywhere near the quake, or D) that, despite two dogs that would have been freaked out by it and a pretty good sensitivty for this sort of thing, I slept through it all apparently and my first indication anything happened was Ben's post.
I'm not sure whether to be more embarrassed kippy was mentioned and not me, or that I was obviously dead to the world. FWIW, everything around me and what I can see seems to be okay. No outward sign anything happened. Still have to do a tour of the rest of the condo, though. CR

I'm on the 3rd floor of my building here in Costa Mesa and I felt swaying. The Bruce Lee bobblehead doll on my desk was shaking so I figured I wasnt just dizzy.
The epicenter was actually in Cambria which is a good 3 to 4 hours north of LA. |

dola,
I just looked up the news story. It hit seven miles off the coast from San Simeon (I think?), where the Hearst Castle is. That's actually very far north of here. I would even question that is closer to LA than San Francisco. I have been to the Hearst Castle as a kid, and I thought it was up near Carmel and Monterrey Bay. So it wouldn't surpise me if NorCal posters felt it more than SoCal people (although guessing from digamma's report, it was definitely felt down here, too). Still, I don't feel so bad for having slept through it now. I hope everyone out here is doing okay. I'm not sure if we have an posters who live along the coast of central California. I also wonder if a seaquake like that triggered a small tsunami? I think you need much deeper water for that to happen, though. Something like that would actually scare me more than the quake. CR

Don't worry about it, SkyDog.
For future reference, I am pretty well smack down in the middle of coastal SoCal, in Orange County, a little bit southeast (along the coast) from Los Angeles, although all int he same SoCal metropolis. I currently live in Anaheim, bit I used to live a feww mile to the south in Costa Mesa, the same city heybrad works in. I didn't know that, though--where do you work heybrad? Ironically, given your thought process there, SkyDog, and tyhe location of the quake, I would have been more affected, it seems, if I had been in central California. CR

That part of the coast is very sparsely populated. I drove it, and went to Hearst Castle, a few years ago. Hearst Castle is still closer to San Luis Obispo than Monterey, though.

Either way, it's about as close, maybe even closer, to the Bay Area than LA. All that is a good drive north from here in SOCal. I went to San Luis Obispo more recently than my trip to Hearsty Castle as a kid, and that was a good 4-5 hour drive up the coast. CR

I agree with that, definitely. I think SLO is about the halfway point, isn't it? And it was 30 miles north of there.

Yeah, if I had to pick a halfway point, I would be hardpressed not to pick SLO.

It was closer to San Jose than to LA. I am in the South Bay, but did not feel anything. However, my fiance was on the 12th floor of a 16 story building in San Jose and said the whole building was swaying.

Wow. You don't work for AAA, do you? I was just at that building taking a test to be a claims agent a couple months ago (didn't pass, stupid test). I lived down just a handful of lights down Harbor on Adams for a whole year, from November, 2002-to last month. Small world, eh? CR

I am in Fresno, and felt it sitting at my desk on the ground floor. I am probably closer to Cambria than either the Northern or Southern Ca posters though. I can drive to Cambria in about an hour and a half, and I doubt either the SoCal or Bay area folks are that close. The parents of one of my good friends lives in Cambria, and the one thing I distinctly remember about their house is a wall consisting entirely of glass looking our over their property. Probably not something designed with a 6.5 earthquake in mind.

I'm in Santa Clarita, 'bout an hour north of Dodger Stadium.
I felt a couple minor tremors late last night, maybe around 4:30 am, but they were small enough that I really wasn't sure if they were earthquakes, or just construction trucks rumbling past our house (lot of home construction goin' on out here). At any rate, we either didn't feel it, or I slept soundly through it. No damage to anything anywhere in the house, so I have to think we were far enough north that we didn't get more than a brief shake or two. |

dola - the power did go out, at least briefly, cuz my alarm was flashing when I woke up, but the power company has been telling us for several weeks "On Monday, we're going to turn the power off sometime between 8 am and noon for upgrades," and they hadn't done it yet.
Today's Monday, so it's entirely possible that was the culprit. |

A few deaths are being reported in Paso Robles, which seems to be the city hit hardest so far. Here's the CNN article:

The thing I love about these earthquakes is they usually don't even wake me up from my sleep. I was born and raised in SoCal and have spent most of my life here. There have only been two times that scared me: One was the big Northridge earthquake in the early 1990s that almost brought the entire five story apartment complex down on top of me. The other was a when an earthquake hit while I was working on the 44th floor of a downtown LA building, and you could actually see and feel the building swaying back and forth (and when I say feel it, I mean that tipping feeling where you feel like if it keeps tipping it's going to fall over). Being 40 floors up during an big earthquake is quite an experience.
