1994 OFFSEASON
Free Agency: The biggest news for the Clippers is that Dikembe Mutombo decides not to resign with us, and instead signs a 6-year maximum deal with the Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks have a decent youth movement going on, and Dikembe might fit in perfectly with that team. We signed 30-year old Mugsy Bogues to a 3-year contract worth $24 Million. While Shawn Kemp, Paul Graham and Buck Williams returned cheap. Terrell Brandon, we had a hard time haggling with. He wanted a 6-year contract worth $70 mil. Not happening. We wait for a week or so, and when he realizes that noone in the market is willing to give him that amount of money, we offer him a considerably lower offer. 6 years at $6 mil per year for a total of $36 mil. Brandon signs, and we retain our back-court from the past couple of seasons. In other FA news, Hakeem Olajuwon resigned with the 76ers for the max. Magic Johnson finally decides to call it quits (and is inducted into the Hall of Fame). Price/Stadium Proposals: We raise our prices considerably, expecting another sell-out season. And we finally get legislation passed. After several years of planning, the creation of a new sports arena in San Francisco has begun. In 5 years, the LA Clippers will be moving to San Francisco.

1994-1995 SEASON
Training Camps: We will be experimenting between Brandon and Bogues this season. Both are good PG's, and we just have to find the one who is more in tune with the team. Gill and Anderson remain our wing starters while DC and Shaq look to have extended minutes now that Dikembe is gone. Again, our goal this season is a playoff birth and if possible, have home court advantage in the 1st round of the playoffs. Player Ratings: Code:

1994-95 NBA SEASON
Dec. 1, 1994 16 games into the season, and we were 10-6. Granted, I am pretty disappointed with our standing. We were still #2 in the Western Conference, behind the absolutely red hot Portland Trailblazers, who were 18-0. Shaq wasn't gettting enough touches, and Derrick Coleman has not performed up to par. Code:
Jan. 1, 1995 We end the year with a record of 22-10, going 12-4 in December. Shaq got more minutes, and so did most of the starters. But it was pretty obvious that we were light years behind the 26-3 Blazers. The New York Knicks, in the East, were also having a great season at 21-3. However, their cap problems seem to be mounting as John S. Williams' contract was coming to an end this season. NY Management was trying to ship out the reigning MVP in return for a couple of solid stars. And when NY came knocking with an offer, we certainly did not have the stomach to refuse it. We send Derrick Coleman, Dennis Scott and a future 1st round pick to the New York Knicks in return for reigning NBA MVP John S. Williams. Williams is a solid "stopper-type" defender and a versatile offensive weapon. Just like that, the Clippers looked like Title Contenders. Nick Anderson's, Shaq's and the 29 year old Williams' contracts were up at the end of this season, and it will be up to us to give them a reason to stay. Maybe a title? Code:

1994-95 NBA SEASON
Feb. 1, 1995 So, we picked up the reigning NBA MVP, and gave up on two quality players in Scott and Coleman. We grabbed a relatively unknown SG through the FA wire: Todd Day, who last saw playing time in 1992. Did things pay off? You're damn right it did. We went undefeated, 14-0, in January. Of course when Kendall Gill, our leading scorer at 19 ppg, came down with right achilles tendinitis halfway through the month, we thought that we would kiss the streak (then 7) goodbye. Todd Day stepped up and filled in nicely, while Paul Graham saw minutes as a back-up SG. Shaq upped his scoring as did everyone else. Shaq, Williams and Anderson all signed extensions with us. Shaq signed a 6-year extension for the max, Anderson signed for two seasons while Williams inked a 4-year deal. That put us dangerously above the cap, but I'm going to admit that I think it's worthwhile. We're still #2 in the West, behind the 43-5 Blazers, who are teasing to beat the 72-10 record set by the Sonics way back in 1988-1989. The Knicks are 31-9 and atop the East. Code:

1994-95 NBA SEASON
Mar. 1, 1995 The All Star Game featured two starters from the Clippers, John S. Williams and Shaquille O'neal. O'neal dominated the game and led the west to a 107-97 victory over the East. O'neal scored 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds on the way to being the All Star Game MVP. We went 7-1 in February, putting us at 43-11, only 4.5 games away from the 40-8 Blazers. Our sole loss in this month was a double-OT game against the Detroit Pistons, who edged us 133-120. Todd Day is turning heads in Clipperland as he has shown flashes of brilliance. For a pick-up off the FA wire, Day is certainly paying dividends. For the first time, the critics are seriously talking about championship hopes for the Clippers. We're hoping that bringing in John S. Williams while giving up on Scott and Coleman was the key move this organziation did to push us into that direction. Code:

Quite funny that in this replay, John S. Williams, aka "Hot Plate," actually manages to live up to his expectations. Yes, his nickname was "Hot Plate" and for good reason. He was a little too enamored of food and ended up being a bloated waste of space for most of his career. They say he had a lot of potential and could have been something if only he didn't eat so much. Guess this replay is proving that.
I wonder what his nickname would have been in this world. There was another John Williams who played roughly at the same time and had a much better career. He had the nickname "Hot Rod", which is where the derisive "Hot Plate" nickname came from, since both players had the same first and last names. Maybe "Hot Shot"? |

1994-95 NBA SEASON
Apr. 1, 1995 We were red hot as we entered March. But a couple of games into a month, Mugsy Bogues sprained his knee and was estimated to be out until mid-April. We scrambled to set our line-up. Terrell Brandon showed his inability to truly become a leader on the court as we dropped three consecutive games against Western Conference rivals. One against the Blazers and two against the rejuvenated Lakers. We managed to win against the lesser teams, but without Bogues, it seems that our entire line-up is lost against the tough ones. The good news is Mugsy is coming back mid-April, just in time for the NBA Playoffs. We are currently 55-14, 5 games behind the 61-10 Blazers. Code:

1994-1995 REGULAR SEASON END
Apr. 27, 1995 The last month of the season went by in a flurry. We got Mugsy back, and defeated the feared Trailblazers in back-to-back games, 115-103 and 138 106. Only two teams have been able to beat the Blazers twice this season, and they're both from Los Angeles. Shaquille O'neal is rumoured to be the frontrunner for the MVP award, of course it's all talk right now. The season draws to a close and we finish with a 65-17 record, 4 games behind the 69-13 record that the Blazers posted. Clippers: Season Stats: Code:

Bump - does your moderation of the WW game mean that the Clipper drive to the title is on hold? I'm dying to see Hot Plate Williams named Finals MVP.
