1st and Ten - a FOF2K7 draft pick dynasty

This will be a draft pick dynasty, where I will follow players over the course of their careers. I call it 1st and 10 because I will be looking at a few positions each time, and picking the best and the 10th best player in the draft at those positions. How good they are will depend on how thin the draft is at their position, I expect to see everything from legends of the game to scrubs who never make an NFL roster, but it should be interesting.

I've done a previous draft pick dynasty and it's been a lot of fun.

http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/...ad.php?t=53760

I'll be starting in a new game in 2007 with fictional players.

Quarterbacks

1st

QB Dexter Hoffman played for Pittsburgh, and is the best of a pretty poor crop of QBs this year. The combine scouts rate him at 5.9, and he likes to throw long passes. To be honest this guy is hard to read, he has a high volatility and his skills are all over the place, his very low accuracy doesn't look too good but he's high in the intangibles, timing, read defense and so forth. He can definitely throw the ball too. This is one of those guys who could go either way, he could stabilize and be a really nice QB or he could bomb out.

10

QB Norm Ewart is the 10th best QB in the draft, graded at 4.9, out of San Diego State. He looks like he could be a decent short pass quarterback, but he doesn't have much of an arm and has trouble reading defenses. If he gets drafted this guy will be on someone's bench for a long time.

Running Backs

1st

Sherman Sampson from Stanford is a great player, and will most likely be a top 3 pick., he's currently scouted as the 2nd best player in the draft. He's graded at 7.1 and looks to be the complete package, with very nice power and speed, and good pass catching ability as well. He ran a 4.57 dash, not the fastest but it's not bad. Sherman is going to put some numbers on the board for some team.

10

Richard Grayvil out of Wagner is graded 5.0 and looks like the kind of player who could surprise a lot of teams. He runs a 4.56 dash, slightly better than Sampson, but he doesn't have much power, he looks like a burst runner rather than a guy who's going to run through people. He's well developed and looks like he can catch some passes. All in all he looks like he could succeed as a backup runner.

Wide Receivers

1st

Trevor Kakoza from Kansas is a burner, with 4.38 speed only two players in the whole draft are faster. He's got good skills, is graded 6.1 and looks like he can be an excellent receiver, though he's very undeveloped (27%) at this point and may need a season or two to really get used to the pace of the NFL. Once he does though, look out, he has big play receiver written all over him.

10

Brandon Reed played for Nebraska and has 4.39 speed, so he'll get downfield quickly. He is one of those min/max players where his stats are either nothing or maxed, so he'll end up somewhere in the middle. He can get downfield and make the big play, but doesn't run very good routes. He's only graded 4.6 so he may get ignored, but I think he can play at the NFL level.

Outside Linebackers

1st

SLB Randal Pritchett from LSU is graded 6.9 and is the 5th best player in the draft. He's got 4.42 speed and looks like a great defensive player, with his zone defense his only area that lags behind. Randal is very volatile and could be better developed, but he looks like a defensive star in the making.

10

SLB Donald Flynn from Florida State is something of a mystery. He declined to work out at the combine, is graded 5.0, but his scouting report looks great, with high marks across the board. To me he looks like a great sleeper player, a guy with his skills could go far in the NFL. We'll see if he gets the chance to show what he can do.

Cornerbacks

1st

Corner Britt Cash just barely nudged out Dexter Dodge for the top spot, both are very close, and they're both very fast, the two fastest players in the draft in fact. Britt played for Louisiana Tech and is very well developed and ready to start at CB. He's graded 7.0 and will certainly go fast in the draft. He looks excellent across the board, and looks like a franchise cornerback.

10

Thomas Gardner out of Iowa State is graded 4.9 and is extremely volatile. He looks like a middle of the road player, though great in a bump and run defense. With his volatility, he could break out or be a complete bust, it's hard to read right now. I think he's a player who would need a particular type of defense to play well in.

2007 Pre Season

Quarterbacks

Dexter Hoffman was picked by Miami in the #2 overall spot. He doesn't look that good but he's the best quarterback available. Dexter is scouted 24/56 after camp and looks like the best QB on the Dolphins roster, so he may have a chance to start, though he looks extremely raw.

Norm Ewart was taken by the Carolina Panthers in the middle of the 5th round. He's the second best QB on the roster this year, scouted at 17/55 after camp, and will back up starting QB Charles Colford.

Running Backs

Sherman Sampson was snatched up by the Cincinnati Bengals with the first pick of the draft. This looks like a very strange pick since they already have the very good 2nd year RB, Brad Treftz on the roster. It looks like some big competition for Sherman, who is scouted 47/66 after camp.

Richard Grayvil was picked by Houston with the 26th pick of the third round. He's scouted 36/43 and will be the backup to starter Henry Monk.

Wide Receivers

Detroit picked Trevor Kakoza at #9 overall (they always seem to pick the wide receivers, even in FOF, don't they.) Trevor is scouted 38/64 after camp and will get the starting job at SE immediately. He's a big upgrade to the Lions receivers, and their 2nd year QB will have some nice targets once he develops.

Brandon Reed was picked by Tampa Bay with the 25th pick of the third round. Though Brandon is scouted at only 33/42, it looks like he'll start at SE. The Bucs receivers are just that bad.

Outside Linebackers

The Vikings took Randal Pritchett at #18 in the first round. Randal is scouted at 36/70 and looks like he's going to be a great player, though he needs some development time. The Vikings starter at SLB is 11 year veteran Warren Craighead, and Randal will back him up this year and move into the starting job as he develops.

Donald Flynn was picked by the Chargers with the last pick of the third round. Donald is scouted 32/57 after camp and looks like he has a good chance to start this year at SLB.

Cornerbacks

Britt Cash was picked by Jacksonville with the #6 overall pick. Britt is scouted 71/80 and looks amazing, he'll start at right corner for the Jags this year and is a huge upgrade.

Thomas Gardner was selected by Miami with the 2nd pick of the fourth round. He's scouted at 24/53 and will try to develop this year and get some playing time as the Dolphins secondary corps is already pretty good.

2007 End of Season

Quarterbacks

Dexter Hoffman was ready to go, he was a top draft pick, ready to start for the Dolphins, the world was his oyster, then BAM, ruptured elbow tendon in a pre-season game and he was done for the year. It remains to be seen whether his skills will take a hit because of this.

Norm Ewart was the backup for Carolina, and threw only eight passes all year, completing two for 24 yards.

Running Backs

Because of injuries, the Bengals ended up with Sherman and Brad Treftz getting significant playing time, though Sherman looked sharper, ending up with 146 carries for 713 yards and 5 touchdowns in 8 starts, and catching 45 balls for 219 yards and two touchdowns. Soon the Bengals are going to have to make a decision on who they want running for them.

Richard Grayvil barely saw the field this year for the Texans, running the ball 3 times for 8 yards in total.

Wide Receivers

Trevor Kakoza played well for Detroit, but his numbers are limited so far by their developing QB. He had 46 catches for 624 yards this year, and two touchdowns.

Brandon Reed was Tampa Bay's best receiver this year, as he hauled in 53 catches for 656 yards with 5 touchdowns.

Outside Linebackers

Randal Pritchett didn't get to play very much this year, as their starting SLB racked up huge numbers of tackles. He ended up with 13 tackles, 3 assists, and a sack.

Donald Flynn got to start for the Chargers at SLB but leg and wrist injuries limited his playing time to 7 starts, with 21 tackles, 7 assists, and a sack on the year.

Cornerbacks

Britt Cash looked great all year, recording 40 tackles and 19 assists in the running game and three interceptions and 13 passes defensed against the pass.

Thomas Gardner barely got to play at all this season, with 6 tackles and 4 assists.

2008 Pre-Season

Quarterbacks

Dexter Hoffman is rated 25/58 by my scout in pre-season, he's still very close to Miami's other QB Glenn Hesselman but has more upside.

Norm Ewart remains with Carolina, and is scouted at 17/51. He will be a backup again this year to Charles Colford.

Running Backs

Sherman Sampson has developed well and is scouted at 52/67, he's definitely edging out Brad Treftz and might start full time for the Bengals this year.

Richard Grayvil is scouted at 31/42 and will remain a backup with the Texans, actually he'll be a third backup this year as they signed a pretty talented rookie back.

Wide Receivers

Trevor Kakoza is scouted at 45/63 and will remain a starter for Detroit.

Brandon Reed is scouted at 42/42 and will be a second SE for Tampa Bay, as they signed an excellent new receiver in this year's draft.

Outside Linebackers

Randal Pritchett is scouted at 39/70 and will remain a fill-in player for the Vikings.

Donald Flynn is scouted at 37/57 and will start again for the Chargers at strong side linebacker.

Cornerbacks

Britt Cash seems to have fully developed and is scouted 84/84 and will start for the Jaguars.

Thomas Gardner is scouted 26/54 and he looks like he'll be the nickel back for Miami this year.

2008 Post-Season

Minnesota handled Denver 14-3 in the Super Bowl this season.

Quarterbacks

Dexter Hoffman was the backup for Miami, as expected, though an injury let him start three games, in which he looked very good, throwing 62-106 for 536 yards, with 5 touchdowns and 1 interception.

Norm Ewart was the third backup for Carolina and never threw a pass this year. He has a chance to develop but he's going to need some playing time.

Running Backs

Sherman Sampson was the full time starter for the Bengals, and he put up some impressive numbers, with 1343 yards on only 282 carries, with 14 touchdowns. He also caught 41 passes for 243 yards.

Richard Grayvil didn't get the run the ball once this year for the Texans.

Wide Receivers

Trevor Kakoza was Detroit's top receiver this year, catching 62 passes for 1014 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Brandon Reed was used as a backup by the Bucs, and caught 28 passes for 344 yards and a touchdown.

Outside Linebackers

Randal Pritchett was the backup to Warren Craighead the whole regular year, and Warren had another great season for the Vikings. But for some unknown reason, they suddenly released him during the playoffs and Randal had to take over. During the regular season Randal had 25 tackles, 16 assists, 1.5 sacks, and an interception. Once named the starter he really stepped it up during the playoffs, in three games he had 18 tackles, 3 assists and a sack, helping the Vikings to win the Super Bowl.

Donald Flynn got to start the entire year this year, except one game missed with an injury. He had 63 tackles, 20 assists, and 5 sacks, as well as 1 interception. He's definitely showing some skills in the pass rush.

Cornerbacks

Britt Cash struggled with injuries this season, and only started 11 games. In those games he had 33 tackles, 10 assists, 2 interceptions, and 9 passes defensed.

Thomas Gardner got to start a few games for Miami this year, and was okay, recording 19 tackles and 6 assists, and defensing a few passes.
