OT: Why do we see the moon during the day?
I was driving the girlfriend home today and she noticed the moon. She asked me why we could see it. I tried to think of something smart but couldn't think of anything.
Is it closer to earth during a certain time of month?

Generally, it's because the moon reflects enough of the sun's light to be seen during the day. Distance is irrelevant.

No, you can see it during the day sometimes because it is in the sky at the same time as the sun. Most of the time we see it during the first or last quarter in the sky because it is still able to reflect sun light to the earth at those angles. As it gets closer to the new moon phase it is towards the sun and is not at an angle to reflect any light.

In the old days you couldn't see the moon during the day. But now, with that huge ozone hole in the atmosphere, from time to time you can see it. Scary really. Global Warming. Tell her that, she'll eat it up.
