Favorite Musical?
I know this might be a rather bold question for some to answer honestly, but do you have a favorite (or some favorite) musicals? Movies or stage...doesn't matter. The two that battle for my top spot:
Sound of Music -- Julie Andrews robbed of the oscar for this one. A perfect movie in so many ways. Fiddler on the Roof -- probably my favorite. It's not for everyone but I think if given a chance, as one gets older, they can appreciate this one a lot more. |

Another one that I enjoy -- Yankee Doodle Dandy with Jimmy Cagney. Like this one mostly because it's one of my grandpa's favorite movies and when I watch it, I think of him but it's a great one as well. The tapdance down the stairs at the end is still tough to top.

Les Miserables is far and away my favorite. I've seen it multiple times, never seen a bad production. It's also the only one whose soundtrack I keep on my iPod.
I am also a fan of The Secret Garden, not so much for the story but I love some of the songs (Lily's Eyes and Winter's on the Wing in particular). /tk

The Man of La Mancha is probably my favorite. I also really enjoyed Rent, and Phantom is pretty much amazing. I am still very sad that I have yet to see Le Miserables.

Big fan of musical comedy. It is what I miss most from no longer living near NYC.
A few I've seen/watched on DVD recently: How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying--If you watch Mad Men, this is the inside joke of having Robert Morse as owner of the ad agency. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum--Zero Mostel is great. The Producers--don't watch the movie with the atrocious Will Ferrell. See it on stage. Once you see enough of the musical classics, you will be able to discern from which old time hit Mel Brooks stole/borrowed the music for each song. Anything Goes--classic, always worth watching. Usually called Light Opera, but in reality the beginning of Musical Comedy, is Gilbert and Sullivan's THE MIKADO. If I could go back in time to be at the opening night of any play in history, this is the one.

+10000000000000000. Best.musical.ever. I also enjoy Man of La Mancha and Little Shop of Horrors for stage productions. For movies, probably Rent. I've always wanted to see stage productions of Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera.

Probably either The Wiz, Guys and Dolls, or The Sound of Music for sentimental reasons.

1. Avenue Q (Anyone who tries to explain it can't do it justice. You try to explain it is R-rated puppets but it sounds stupid. I imagine it would be like saying the Simpsons or South Park are funny cartoons. You have to see this play to really know how great it is)
Also rans: Mamma Mia (lot of fun, good music), Wicked (entertaining story), Chicago (some of the songs stuck in my head for a long time) The only show I have ever seen that I didn't enjoy was Rent. (and that one cost an arm and a leg on Broadway) |

On stage: I feel unoriginal for saying it, but I've always enjoyed Phantom of the Opera. The tone of the musical numbers, the atmosphere surrounding the use of the chandelier, it has always clicked with me. (By always enjoyed, I mean the two times I've seen it in person.)

Les Mis. Seen it 4 times now. The first was with my mother and sister, the second was with my wife, the 3rd and 4th were by myself. And yes, I'm still married to that same woman, she just didn't like it. Myself, I can sing any of the songs on request, and torture my family with it often.
Yep, I should turn in my man card. Honest folks, I like manly things like fast cars and guns too. ;- )

Not a huge musical fan, but I suppose I enjoyed Les Mis and How to Succeed the most on Broadway. Didn't see these on Broadway, but I also enjoyed Sweeney Todd and Little Shop of Horrors. Been giving some thought on taking my Grandfather up on his offer of going to see Come Fly Away.

So what are we going to do with this pile of man cards? Give 'em to the homeless? Burn 'em? Use them to make lovely pterodactyl?

Pretty much generally hate musicals, but my kids went through a Julie Andrews phase years ago and, as a result, I now recognize the genius of Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music.

It's presented as a concert by a German-American rock band. Throughout the show, the singer (Hedwig) tells the story of "her" life through her rock songs. I say "her" because she is a former man who had a sex change operation in order to marry an American soldier and escape East germany. The operation was botched which is why she still has an "angry inch" down there. Anyway, the music is awesome and it's very funny. I saw it 3 times off broadway years ago, and there is now talk that they'll mount a full Broadway production this year. It was also made into a pretty good movie, but the stage show is much better because of the intimacy of being that close to a wild, rocking man-woman who goes through a breakdown as the show goes on. |

You are correct sir. We did not (with a couple of special occasions exceptions) do a full dress cast. What we lacked in costuming we seemed to make up for with energy, consistency, and sheer numbers. It's definitely awesome (And a bad thing to get songs stuck in your head) I think I've posted this before but when society suitably collapses to allow this, I want to be there. I want to see (or even direct!) a live action version of this on Broadway, complete with a live cast of children SI

Les Mis is excellent. As is Wicked and Spamalot.
As for movies, I love Moulin Rouge and Chicago.
