Seconded. I applied for an $8/hr cashier job and I'm worried my poor credit will keep me from getting it.

I can't wait to get back to school this fall.

We went through this shit last year with my wife. She was unemployed for about 2 years. I can't say she was looking hard all the time, but you can only send out so many resumes with nary a response. She got some substitute teaching, but that barely pays anything.

She found something now, and it's really not all that great, but at least it's a platform from which to look at other things. I probably think credit being trashed from losing income is probably why she didn't get certain things.

Ah well, good luck. Id encourage you guys to be as social as you can and interact with a tin of people. It's how I've gotten hired the past few times. Especially if you can subsist off of a low paying job for now. Everyone qualifies for those, but knowing even a friend of a friend might help.

Yeah, and I suspect I'm moving out and onward. Detroit has an unemployment rate of roughly 18% - not going to find one here.

Come to Cleveland. I need to hire a couple capable workers but yet to find any. Amazing with the unemployment rate as high as it isl, still can't find new help that comes in on time and is capable of working.

This is why when my father tries to convince me to move back to Michigan, I just look at him and shake my head. No thanks.

Good luck with the search, it is not fun.

I've got a friend that just headed for the oil rigs in North Dakota. And another that may not be too far behind.

I remember seeing something on TV last year even (60 Minutes?) talking about the oil boom in North Dakota. Not necessarily even working on rigs, but construction and all the other fun stuff that comes with building an infrastructure.

I'd love to go back too, but job prospects make it difficult. I'm already in a pretty small field, so staying in Detroit would mean even fewer prospects than what's available here in Chicago.

Unemployed for 440 days and counting. Eviction in 44 days. I'm 47 years old and educated.
My wife is on workmens comp. (when the employer actually bothers to pay) with settlement we thought 2 months ago. Now we have no idea when/if they will settle.
I have my youngest (20 years old) at home, and did I mention we are in the final days before adopting my wife's cousin's (father killed in Afghanistan, mother in prison).
Oh and not to forget my post-illness care requiring 16 pills and 2 shots (insulin) a day.

Oh the freakin' joy of waking up everyday.

And I was right. They won't hire me as a cashier because I have bad credit. I guess ten years in a supermarket checkout, five of those as a department manager is not good enough to make $8/hr

I second you, Abe...

I just applied to Lowes.

You know what else sucks? I just put $1700 on my credit card to buy kitchen cabinets & don't have a job to pay for it. Why would I do something so stupid? The condo isn't up to code. If it isn't up to code I can't sell it if I need to. Having a kitchen (and a fucking sweet one at that) is a selling point.

My company pretty regularly has openings and is growing. There is also a decent opportunity for advancement. If anyone wants to PM me where they live I'll try and remember to check our job website. You also could likely apply on line. PM me for any details, I work for one of the big auto insurance companies. You would likely need a college degree but the major probably doesn't matter. I was hire with a BA in History and work in property damage, go figure.

edit: they do a pretty extensive background check so any criminal records or major driving problems likely rule you out.

I wish I could help you guys, I know what it is like as well. But I have tried to help RendeR here in Buffalo but it is tough in the beat up cities.

It's honestly the entire reason I moved out from behind a computer and went into sales, I know I can get a job usually with decent base and then have to work my ass off for a good commission.

I should have 2 postings later this year for database developers. One more senior at like 80k and the other more junior at 70k (bases bonus targets are 7.5%) Mostly SQL. I don't really know anything about database development but it will be housed in my department. I have a business lead job that will go up at 100-110k, but that will probably have to be someone internal with some background.

Being in Hartford would be a nice to have, but there are two current developers who work at home from Phoenix and Dallas.

If you're not averse to relocation then I would look into moving to Texas. Either one of your job skills would be applicable and in demand. Massive construction projects underway here, housing market that didn't dip as much as the rest of the country and is in recovery. Plenty of game companies in the Austin area. Cost of living substantially less than where you are right now.

I'm looking at seminary. My path in my career is virtually ruined by my termination, but seminary would open doors at christian schools which I've wanted to work at for a while. I feel hamstrung by the inability to fully help my public school students fully deal with the things in their life.

Welp, same company that wouldn't hire me for barely above minimum wage to cashier is hiring me to be "general help." I guess they're okay with my threat to steal merchandise, but not cash.

A job is a job is a job at this point.

School was paid for, but he still has loans on his undergrad and he took out a couple private ones for living expenses while getting his PhD since the stipend wasn't enough to get by on. I think the undergrad ones aren't too bad since they are federal ones and have a low interest rate. But I think the private ones are at least 5%. Don't think he owes 6-figures or anything, but I'd guess at least $50k.

I appreciate it. I'm stuck for a couple more years until my youngest finishes college. Out of state cost is crazy expensive.

You sound like a real good guy, so this is may sound kind of harsh. But you would seriously rather be homeless then for your youngest child not to finish college? It sounds like you are on the brink of disaster. I know kids are important and all, but you got to get a job and that means doing anything necessary for it.
