Right after Dennis Rodman shows up to the Vatican, we have white smoke.

Coincidence? I think not. All hail Pope Rodman I.

Ha...I posted "white smoke" in the "random thoughts that don't deserve it's own thread" thread . I was actually surprised we didn't have a thread on this earlier.

Seems like they went for another caretaker. If I heard the Vatican TV translation right he was born in 1936.

It's a good pick in that they open up the church to developing nations, but Argentina is probably the most western country in S.A. He's the son of an Italian, so he isn't foreign enough to piss off the racists in the Italian church. (Yes, soccer fans, I'm pointing at you.)

From an earlier bio of papal candidates:

Quote:
Bergoglio, 76, reportedly got the second-most votes after Joseph Ratzinger in the 2005 papal election, and he has long specialized in the kind of pastoral work that some say is an essential skill for the next pope. In a lifetime of teaching and leading priests in Latin America, which has the largest share of the world’s Catholics, Bergoglio has shown a keen political sensibility as well as the kind of self-effacing humility that fellow cardinals value highly, says his official biographer, Sergio Rubin.

Bergoglio would likely encourage the church’s 400,000 priests to hit the streets to capture more souls, Rubin said in an Associated Press interview. He is also most comfortable taking a low profile, and his personal style is the antithesis of Vatican splendor. “It’s a very curious thing: When bishops meet, he always wants to sit in the back rows. This sense of humility is very well seen in Rome,” Rubin said.

Bergoglio is known for modernizing an Argentine church that had been among the most conservative in Latin America.

Interesting that he was runner-up last time.

So is he Pope Francis, or Pope Francis I?

(i.e. does the number get attached only after there's a second one? Like John Smith Sr. isn't a Sr. until there's a John Smith Jr.)

Just happened to click on a news page that has a livestream. Must admit to getting goosebumps at the crowd going crazy at the window opening and a guy giving an anouncement (and now every new development).
There´s few more impressive sights than a packed St Peter's square at night ...

I´m very sceptical towards religion in general and the organisational aspect of it (no matter which of the big and small religious fractions), but i must admit that seeing this i understand the magnitude of it all. It is a big deal, plain and simple.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio is the new pope, 76 year old from Argentina. Will go by Francis, is the first to choose the name. Pretty conservative ...

edit : I severely underestimated the speed of posting

Let's see how much his Wiki changes in the next few days (it has already been redirected from his name to Pope Francis in the past 15 minutes)

Here's the three sections about his views. I'll paste in full under the spoiler tags but to summarize what's there so far: he's opposed abortion & euthanasia, he's affirmed church teaching on homosexuality, he strongly opposed same-sex marriage legislation & same-sex adoption

Spoiler

So more of the same. I'm sure the Catholic Church will switch their stance on homosexuality before I die, but it's still going to be awhile. Obviously not under this pope. They needed a younger leader in a bad way.

From what I just read, it can be either. Sometimes regnal names are SoandSo I, sometimes they don't become I until there's a II.

Just talking about this at work. I'm cynical, but at least part of this constantly choosing older people who will be retiring/dying in 5-10 years, it's good for business.

Choosing the Pope is a big deal, to both hard core Catholics, who may travel to Rome, etc, and those who are interested from a pop culture angle.

That, and when some kind of compromise is needed to get a guy elected, it's probably a lot easier to have a shorter-term presence. People are going to be a lot less willing to settle on a pope they don't really want if he's going to be there for 40 years.

Seems that it would take a certain amount of years to develop the gravitas needed to be elected.

St. Francis was pretty awesome, as far as saints go. I don't know too much about saints or Catholicism, but he's always kind of stood out to me, the little I've heard about him. Though it seems like it'd be an ideal name for a younger, hipper pope.

i think this is important. in handicapping the cardinals, CNN talked about the philipino cardinal, and how it was widely considered that he was too young... at 55.

So far his Wiki entry additions have included a section on his relationship (and/or allegations about his relationship) with the military junta.

I suspect we'll see details about his favorite football team & favorite meals appear soon.

I think this is a good selection. I mean, you were NEVER going to get a Pope who was going to be for gay marriage, c'mon. However, he seems to be very austere. He doesn't like living in luxury and would rather live in sparse accommodations and take the bus to work (as he did in Buenos Aries). He also is very big on social justice and against neo-liberal economics (so was Benedict XVI, but Francis is more so).

Also the St. Francis is known for having a vision from God telling him to "clean up my house" (paraphrasing). It appears this is what Pope Francis wants out of his Papacy.

When people say we need a younger Pope, maybe so, but John Paul II when he was elected in 1978 was the youngest Pope in 130 years. So it does occasionally happen, but even in earlier centuries it was common for Popes to be elders of the Church.

Can Argentina be considered developing as opposed to...I dunno, already developed*? They seem to have their shit together pretty well.

* Ok, maybe economically they're still considered "developing", though they're still in the G-20 and they appear to be Very High on the Human Development Index

I was thinking the symbolism of a country south of the equator. I probably should have worded it better.
