Herrera Garners CL Batter of the Month Award

Orlando Herrera battered Continental League pitchers all April and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around Front Office Offseason League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 30-year-old Herrera told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 26 games, Herrera hit .273 with 11 home runs, 26 RBIs and scored 19 runs.


April's Best RL Hitter is Orlando Castro

Orlando Castro of the Royals hit .333 in April with 6 home runs, 25 RBIs and 19 runs scored to capture a majority of votes for the Republic League Batter of the Month trophy.

The 38-year-old is in the last year of his contract and will undoubtedly use these numbers to try and bring in a huge pay raise.

CL Top Pitcher for April Picked

Rodrigo Rivera's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 4-0 in April, the 31-year-old Apex hurler has been named Continental League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 39 in 42.1 innings, logged an ERA of 1.06 and allowed opponents to hit .209 against him.

Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Roberto Ruíz still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in April. The 32-year-old starter for Toronto was named Republic League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 5 wins and 1 loss with 37 strikeouts in his 6 starts, putting up a fine 1.99 ERA in 49.2 innings of work.

Orlando Rivera earned April's Rookie of the Month honors in the Continental League for last month's performance. The boyish Napa Valley left fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Rivera hit .316 with 1 home run, 10 RBIs and 16 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

Youngster Samuel Demers emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Hammersmith deserved the honor, batting .361 with 5 home runs and 15 runs batted in. May's CL Batter of Month Award Announced

Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 27-year-old Chris Long put together a solid offensive month for Brooklyn and was crowned May's top batter in the Continental League.

He batted .345 with 9 home runs, 31 RBIs and 19 runs scored.



On the season, Long is batting .282 with 11 home runs and 42 RBIs. He has played in 56 games.


Raúl López Selected May's Best Batter

Omaha Bees 31-year-old third baseman Raúl López hit his way to a .376 batting average and the Republic League Batter of the Month award in May.

He had 7 home runs, 14 RBIs and 20 runs scored for the month.

This year López is hitting .343 with 12 home runs and 25 RBIs to his credit. He has gotten on base at a .416 clip and scored 35 runs.

CL Announces May's Best Starter

Veteran Tatsukichi Kouda put together quite a successful stretch in May for the Leduc Bullets, earning himself the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

Kouda racked up a 4-1 record in 5 starts, posting a 2.25 ERA over 36 innings and striking out 25.

In 11 starts this season Kouda has compiled a 5-4 record and a 2.81 ERA.


RL's Best Starter is Ruíz

The Republic League hitters didn't have a chance in May when the Toronto Marlboros manager wrote "Ruíz" on the lineup card. Outing after outing, Roberto Ruíz held teams in check and usually got a win.

He excelled with a 5-0 mark and 2.47 ERA in 6 starts. The talented Marlboros star pitched 47.1 innings, fanned 35 and held opposing teams to a .253 average.

For his superb mound work Ruíz was named the RL Pitcher of the Month by the baseball writers.

To date this season Ruíz has compiled a 10-1 record with a 2.23 ERA in 12 starts.

Orlando Rivera is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Continental League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In May the Napa Valley hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .327 average with 37 hits, 1 home run and 6 RBIs.

This season Rivera is batting .322 with 68 hits, 2 home runs, 16 RBIs, 13 walks, .376 OBP and has scored 33 runs. He has played in 54 games.


May's Outstanding RL Rookie Announced

Samuel Demers's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Hammersmith right fielder has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In May he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

CL Top Batter Trophy Won by Long

Today Chris Long was voted Continental League Batter of the Month for July. During the month the 27-year-old Brooklyn center fielder compiled a .333 batting average.

Most importantly for the Brownstones though, he also posted 7 home runs, 25 RBIs and 24 runs scored.

So far this year Long is hitting .299 with 18 home runs.


Catling Wins Best Bat Award in June

Tony Catling used that sweet swing with great success for Omaha last month, garnering him the Republic League Batter of the Month award.

The 27-year-old first baseman put up a .373 batting average and collected 8 home runs, 27 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

So far this year, Catling is batting .297 with 16 home runs and 58 RBIs.

Contreras Stands Out, Choice for Best Pitcher

When Roberto Contreras takes the hill, he's a good bet to nail down the victory for the Apex Assassins. At least that's the way it was in May.

He excelled with a 4-0 mark and 2.08 ERA in 5 starts. In 39 innings, he fanned 24 and walked 14.
That's why he was honored today as the Pitcher of the Month by the Continental League.

Contreras has fashioned a 8-1 mark for the season, 2.53 ERA and thrown 110.1 innings in 16 starts. Opposing clubs are batting .234 against him.


Pérez #1 RL Pitcher in June

Hammersmith starter Reynaldo Pérez really put the chill on opposing teams in June and today was acclaimed the Republic League Pitcher of the Month.

He excelled with a 4-1 mark and 1.53 ERA in 6 starts. In 47 innings, he fanned 20 and walked 6.

Looking at his season stats, Pérez has won 11 and lost 4, collecting 60 strikeouts and 23 walks in 120.2 innings with a 2.76 ERA.

A veritable toddler to the Continental League, José López just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for June.

Over the past month the 25-year-old center fielder for Baltimore hit .365 with 23 hits, 3 home runs and 13 runs batted in. He also logged 5 walks and compiled a .406 on-base percentage.

To date López has chalked up a .301 average with 8 home runs, driven in 27 runs and scored 23 times.


Hartford Third Baseman June's Best Rookie

The Republic League made the official announcement today. The Rookie of the Month trophy went to John King of Hartford. He was voted the outstanding rookie in June.

Last month the 24-year-old Riverhawks third baseman played in 19 games and hit .340 with 9 doubles, no triples and 1 home run. King also scored 11 times and drove in 2 runs.

In the month of July Chris Long thumped the ball with authority, earning Continental League Batter of the Month honors in the process.

Brooklyn's center fielder hit .324 with 10 home runs, 21 RBIs and scored 25 runs.

Long is currently hitting at a .305 pace with 28 home runs, 88 RBIs and has scored 84 times.


Republic League Picks July's Best Batter

July was a good month for Lee Hall. The Montreal first baseman had his way with opposing pitchers all month while posting a .337 batting average and was selected as the Republic League Batter of the Month.

Last month Hall put up some solid numbers: 6 home runs, 25 RBIs, 20 runs scored and a .417 on-base percentage.

Hall is currently batting .296 with 13 home runs, 71 RBIs and 59 runs scored. He has 120 hits in 405 at-bats.

CL Announces Best Pitcher for July

Last month's cream of the crop on the mound was Tatsukichi Kouda of the Leduc Bullets. He captured the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award for his outstanding performance in July.

Kouda started 5 games, threw 41.1 innings, yielded 22 hits and logged a 4-0 record. He put down 32 batters on strikes, walked 6 and compiled a 1.31 ERA. Opposing teams batted .157 against him.

On the season Kouda has 11 wins and 5 losses and a 2.39 ERA.


Tushinghem Garners RL #1 Pitcher Award

Micheal Tushinghem is at the zenith of his career and today he was selected as the Republic League Pitcher of the Month for July.

He made no relief appearances for Montreal last month, throwing 37.2 innings and collecting no saves, a 5-0 record, 18 strikeouts and a 3.35 ERA.

This season Tushinghem has logged no relief appearances, 127.1 IP, 65 strikeouts, and a 4.38 ERA. His W-L mark is 11 wins and 8 losses, and he has no saves

Pérez Heads the Rookie Class

Emílio Pérez made a name for himself in the Continental League in July. The talented shortstop for Leduc compiled a .323 batting average and was the top votegetter for the Rookie of the Month trophy.

He won it by going 21-65 in 21 games with 3 home runs, 10 RBIs and 8 runs scored.

This year Pérez has socked 81 hits in 276 at-bats for a .293 average with 4 home runs. He is getting on base at a .334 pace and his totals also include 30 RBIs and 31 runs scored.

Apex's Martínez Collects August Batting Honor

On the heels of a very productive August, Jesús Martínez received Continental League Batter of the Month recognition today.

The battle-tested center fielder hit .310 for the Apex Assassins and racked up 8 home runs, 25 RBIs and 25 runs scored.

So far this year Martínez is batting .296 with 27 home runs, 90 RBIs and 101 runs scored.


Omaha Third Baseman RL's Best Batter in August

Omaha's Raúl López had a productive August and topped it off by winning the Batter of the Month citation from the Republic League.

The 31-year-old third baseman stood out at the plate with a .371 batting average, 8 home runs, 21 RBIs and 22 runs scored.

Presently López is batting .333 with 30 home runs and 82 RBIs. He has played in 135 games and scored 96 times.

Flores Acclaimed Top Pitcher in August

Ramón Flores had a very good August and has been rewarded with the Continental League Pitcher of the Month Award. The Napa Valley bullpen specialist was very effective, constantly coming in and getting his club out of trouble or protecting a one-run or two-run lead.

The Winemakers ace starred with 5 saves in 13 relief appearances, logging 14 innings, 14 strikeouts, 3 walks and a 2.57 ERA. Flores finished the month with 3 wins and 1 loss -- and was named the league's best pitcher.

On the year Flores has 28 saves in 62 relief appearances with a 4-4 record and 2.59 ERA.


Herrera Snags RL Top Hurler Trophy

Jorge Herrera took home the Republic League Pitcher of the Month honors in August. After all these years playing ball, the 38-year-old veteran still enjoys the game as though he'd just broken camp for the first time a month ago. He's a bit older now with a few more aches and pains, but the old man has reason to celebrate, having gone 3-0 for Omaha last month and claiming the Pitcher of the Month award.

He tacked up a 0.23 ERA in his 5 starts, tossing 39.2 innings and striking out 29.

Up to now Herrera has recorded a record of 11-9. In 27 starts he has fanned 139 batters in 187.1 innings with a 2.79 ERA.

W...T...F?!? 10-17 in August? I went from cruising to the playoffs to just scraping in by the skin of my teeth (sorry, Tasan).

I never understand what the hell is going on for some stretches of this game. You go at a .614 clip for five of the six months of the year, but you drop a .370 win % in the sixth month.

But, hey, I know I shouldn't make too big a deal about it, as I did get into the playoffs. Good luck to the other playoff squads tomorrow.
