CL Best Hitter Trophy Goes to Barrón

Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 27-year-old Bernardo Barrón put together a solid offensive month for Washington and was crowned April's top batter in the Continental League.

He batted .361 with 8 home runs, 15 RBIs and 23 runs scored.


Carlos Delgado Named Best RL Batter in April

Not known for his offensive prowess, Carlos Delgado set the league afire in April and took home the Republic League Batter of the Month award.

The Maricopa third baseman posted a steady .366 batting average, 6 home runs, 16 RBIs and 19 runs.

Continental League Names #1 Pitcher in April

Paul MacDormond's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 4-0 in April, the 31-year-old Omaha hurler has been named Continental League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 44 in 44 innings, logged an ERA of 2.86 and allowed opponents to hit .196 against him.


RL Starter of the Month Goes to García

Pepe García has made fans throughout FOOL-X take notice over the past month with an exceptional 3-0 record. No pitcher in the Republic League threw better in April, garnering him the Pitcher of the Month award today.

In 5 starts García compiled a 1.78 ERA, putting up a 3-0 record, striking out 24 and tossing 30.1 innings.

Marquee Month for Guzmán, Top CL Rookie

Jesús Guzmán of the Oshawa Mullets has been chosen the top Rookie in the Continental League.

In April he racked up 30 hits, 1 home run, 8 RBIs and 9 runs scored. He hit .294 with a .357 OBP.


Republic League Names Rookie of Month

Youngster Dany Martin emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Waikiki deserved the honor, batting .287 with 1 home run and 13 RBI. Is the month of April a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Martin enjoy the limelight.

García Grabs CL Best Batter Award for May

When guys like Omaha's Héctor García win Batter of the Month awards, it just makes you feel good. In a productive May, the longtime Continental League veteran toyed with opposing pitchers all month long, collecting 43 hits in 111 at-bats.

The veteran center fielder hit for a .387 batting average and collected 6 home runs, 15 RBIs and 22 runs scored.

This year García has 9 home runs and a .340 batting average.


Díaz Snares RL Top Batter Award in May

Germán Díaz battered Republic League pitchers all May and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around FOOL-X long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 32-year-old Díaz told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 29 games, Díaz hit .296 with 7 home runs, 23 RBIs and scored 14 runs.

In 55 games this season Díaz has batted at a .271 pace with 60 hits and 14 home runs.

MacDormond Stands Out, Choice for Best Pitcher

Veteran Paul MacDormond put together quite a successful stretch in May for the Omaha Bees, earning himself the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

MacDormond racked up a 4-0 record in 5 starts, posting a 1.93 ERA over 37.1 innings and striking out 35.

On the season MacDormond has a 8-0 record with a 2.43 ERA.


Burrell Is May's Best RL Hurler

There was little doubt around the Republic League that Devin Burrell would be awarded Pitcher of the Month honors for May. Today, they made it official, naming the 24-year-old Spring Lions starter the latest honoree.

He thoroughly dominated the hitters who stood in against him, holding them to a .217 batting average while fashioning a 1.74 ERA in 6 starts. His record for the month was 5-1 in 41.1 innings of work.

Burrell has posted a 6-3 record for the year with a 4.43 ERA. Teams are hitting .271 against him and he has rung up 35 strikeouts in 65 innings.

Guzmán Voted May's Best CL Rookie

A rookie, Jesús Guzmán is turning heads around the Continental League, especially since he just netted May's Rookie of the Month trophy.

The Oshawa first baseman batted .239 last month and collected 26 hits, 2 home runs, 14 RBIs and 11 runs scored.

This could be the first of many such awards if he continues this torrid hitting, but he's definitely put himself in a good position to claim the Kien-lung Teng Award later this year.

This season Guzmán is hitting at a .265 pace with 3 home runs, 22 RBIs and has scored 20 times.

The Republic League Rookie of the Month trophy has been awarded to Glen Lodge of the Las Vegas Wildcats.

In May he played in 9 games, recording a .387 batting average with 1 home run, 9 RBIs and 4 runs scored.

For the season Lodge is currently batting .333 with 1 home run and 11 RBIs. In 17 games he has reached base at a .379 rate and scored 6 runs to date.

Barrón June's Best Bat Choice

Bernardo Barrón was declared the Continental League Batter of the Month today. Washington's right fielder stroked 42 hits in 104 at-bats for a .404 average in June.

He also hit 6 home runs, drove in 22 and scored 19 runs.

Thus far this season in 82 games Barrón is batting .355 with 20 home runs, 56 RBIs and 57 runs scored. He has 107 hits in 301 at-bats.


López Gets RL Batter of the Month Trophy

When it came to hitting the baseball, Javier López had few Republic League peers in June. The left fielder for Chicago mauled opposing pitchers for a .373 batting average and was voted the league's best batter for the month.

He finished with some strong stats: 10 home runs, 29 RBIs, 22 runs scored, 11 walks and a .419 on-base percentage.

This year López is hitting at a .307 pace with 20 home runs and 69 RBIs. He has played in 81 games and scored 48 times.

CL's Top Starter is Cobb

Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Jim Cobb still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in June. The 33-year-old starter for Alberta was named Continental League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 4 wins and no losses with 40 strikeouts in his 7 starts, putting up a fine 2.34 ERA in 42.1 innings of work.

On the season Cobb has compiled a 6-5 mark with a 3.17 ERA in 21 starts. In pitching 119.1 innings he has 114 strikeouts and 18 walks while limiting the opposition to a .271 batting average.


June's Best Starter Named in RL

Fernando Reyes dazzled opponents on his way to the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award for June.

Posting a 4-0 record and a 1.58 ERA, the Cleveland Naps starter held opposing hitters to a .207 batting average while striking out 39 in 45.2 innings and giving up no walks.

This year Reyes has a 8-5 record with a 2.68 ERA in 21 starts.

Jesús Guzmán certainly had a lot to crow about in the Continental League in June. The rookie first baseman for Oshawa tagged opposing pitchers for a .288 batting average and was the top votegetter for the Rookie of the Month trophy.

He won it by going 32-111 in 28 games with 2 home runs, 12 RBIs and 10 runs scored.

So far this year Guzmán has 5 home runs and a .273 batting average.

A veritable toddler to the Republic League, Dany Martin just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for June.

Over the past month the 23-year-old shortstop for Waikiki hit .242 with 24 hits, 2 home runs and 20 RBI. He also logged 6 walks and compiled a .278 on-base percentage.

CL Announces Outstanding Batter Award

Olímpio Cassar of the Omaha Bees was named the Continental League's best batter for his fine performance in July.

He compiled a .387 batting average and .508 on-base percentage during the month. In 25 games he piled up 36 hits, 1 home run, 12 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

Thus far this year Cassar is hitting .316 with 2 home runs, 47 RBIs and 62 runs scored.


RL Choice for Batter of the Month is Delgado

In July, José Delgado was the toughest out in the Republic League and that is the prime reason he was voted the Batter of the Month.

The Ann Arbor center fielder rapped out 38 hits in 105 at-bats for a .362 batting average, hit 3 home runs, drove in 20 runs and scored 22 times.

Delgado is hitting .300 this year with 15 home runs, 73 RBIs and 69 runs scored. He has 134 hits in 446 at-bats, 22 walks and a .338 on-base percentage. Delgado has played in 108 games.

Manchester's Young Top Pitcher in July

Last month's cream of the crop on the mound was Mike Young of the Manchester Terriers. He captured the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award for his outstanding performance in July.

Young started 5 games, threw 33 innings, yielded 25 hits and logged a 5-0 record. He put down 23 batters on strikes, walked 13 and compiled a 2.73 ERA. Opposing teams batted .210 against him.

To date this season, Young has registered 21 starts, 10-8 won-lost mark, 3.67 ERA, 117.2 IP, 86 strikeouts and 59 walks. Opposing teams have hit .235 against him.


Gibbons Takes RL #1 Pitcher Trophy

When Danny Gibbons took the hill in July, he was in charge. The Ann Arbor starter never let the Republic League batters get a foothold against him. For his peerless performance, he came away with an impressive 3-1 record and the Pitcher of the Month award.

The talented Wolverines hurler made 5 starts, worked 32.1 innings, permitted 24 base hits, and struck out 29 while putting up a 0.84 ERA.

In the current season in 22 starts, Danny Gibbons has a record of 11-6 with 141 strikeouts in 132.2 innings and a 3.46 ERA.

July's Best Rookie Honored by CL

The whole town is celebrating today in Oshawa as Jesús Guzmán has just been awarded July's Continental League Rookie of the Month trophy.

The standout rookie first baseman took the award by rapping out 33 hits in 96 at-bats for a .344 batting average. During the month he collected 4 home runs, drove in 16 runs and scored 17 times.

This year Guzmán is hitting .289 with 9 home runs.


Martin Selected July's Top Newcomer

Dany Martin's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Waikiki shortstop has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In July he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .239 with 5 doubles, 1 triple and 2 home runs. Martin also scored 9 times and drove in 9 runs.

This year Martin is batting .235 with 6 home runs and 48 RBIs. In 107 games he has scored 40 times.

Ayala Takes CL's Best Bat Award

Oshawa shortstop Héctor Ayala put the wraps on a fine August by capturing the Continental League Batter of the Month honors today.

He put up a .308 batting average and .400 on-base percentage last month while racking up 8 home runs, 19 RBIs, 21 runs scored and 15 walks.

This season Ayala has hit at a .329 clip with 86 RBIs, 31 home runs and 95 runs scored. He has played in 134 games.

In August, Jason Thompson snapped up the Republic League Batter of the Month trophy by cracking 27 hits and popping 9 home runs.

Washington's Relief Ace Top Pitcher in August

José Larreta was the anchor in the Washington bullpen last month and snatched up the Continental League Pitcher of the Month honors for August. The 27-year-old is in the prime of his career and pitching like he intends to stay around baseball for quite some time to come.

He threw 14.1 innings over 13 relief appearances and collected a 1-0 record with 16 strikeouts and 10 saves while etching his 0.63 ERA.

To date, Larreta has registered a 5-5 won-lost mark, has 58 relief appearances and rung up 36 saves. He has a 3.49 ERA and has allowed 57 hits over his 56.2 innings of work, struck out 57 batters and walked 29.


Hitmen García August's Top Hurler

Alfredo García has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in August and stole away with the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Hitmen bullpen ace collected 9 saves and 23 strikeouts in 14.1 innings, holding the opposition to a .125 average and posting a 0.00 ERA and a 1-0 record.

Up to this point in the season, García has put up these stats: 54 relief appearances, 33 saves, 56.1 IP, 81 strikeouts and 1.60 ERA. His won-lost record is 2-2 with the opposition is hitting .195 against him.

José Larreta was the anchor in the Washington bullpen last month and snatched up the Continental League Pitcher of the Month honors for August. The 27-year-old is in the prime of his career and pitching like he intends to stay around baseball for quite some time to come.

He threw 14.1 innings over 13 relief appearances and collected a 1-0 record with 16 strikeouts and 10 saves while etching his 0.63 ERA.

To date, Larreta has registered a 5-5 won-lost mark, has 58 relief appearances and rung up 36 saves. He has a 3.49 ERA and has allowed 57 hits over his 56.2 innings of work, struck out 57 batters and walked 29.

Alfredo García has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in August and stole away with the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Hitmen bullpen ace collected 9 saves and 23 strikeouts in 14.1 innings, holding the opposition to a .125 average and posting a 0.00 ERA and a 1-0 record.

Up to this point in the season, García has put up these stats: 54 relief appearances, 33 saves, 56.1 IP, 81 strikeouts and 1.60 ERA. His won-lost record is 2-2 with the opposition is hitting .195 against him.

Alfredo Garcia needs 46 saves this season to tie the all-time franchise mark at 412. He's never saved 46 games so it would be quite the feat for the dominant closer.

What a strange season. I really expected better from Havana this week. Not saying I was a championship contender, but in the mix for a spot in the playoffs and being above .500, I felt for sure. So to end up with a Top Four pick is a bit disheartening. Ugh.

At least I signed Ledoux to an extension.

Well, I won't see the file until tonight, but if I had to guess, my pen, which lacks top end talent, probably underperformed, my defense was merely solid at key spots (CF, SS), and I was too platoon heavy at too many positions, which makes me vulnerable to teams with versatile pitching staffs. Plus, I had a couple key players in their mid-30s, so they may have hit the wall, too.

Lots that could go wrong with this team. But, yeah, it is also a very strong division.
