Barrón Garners CL Batter of the Month Award

The premier hitter in the Continental League in April was Manchester left fielder Bernardo Barrón. For his standout play, he was voted the Batter of the Month.

Barrón was selected after batting .400, hitting 8 home runs, scoring 13 runs and driving in 15.


Marquis Takes RL's Best Bat Trophy

It was a good month for Maricopa Rattlers catcher José Marquis, April's Republic League Batter of the Month.

Marquis starred by hitting .344 with a .400 on-base percentage. He totaled 33 hits in 96 at-bats, 6 home runs, 14 RBIs and scored 11 runs.

Continental League Picks Best Starter in April

Veteran Kang-xi Shu put together quite a successful stretch in April for the Plantana Pirates, earning himself the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

Shu racked up a 4-0 record in 4 starts, posting a 0.88 ERA over 30.2 innings and striking out 21.


RL Top Pitcher Award for April to Hernández

Francisco Hernández has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in April and stole away with the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Lions bullpen ace collected 10 saves and 19 strikeouts in 15.1 innings, holding the opposition to a .120 average and posting a 0.59 ERA and a 1-0 record.

Continental League Names Rookie of Month

Andy Stanley is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Continental League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In April the Omaha hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .400 average with 26 hits, 3 home runs and 13 RBIs.


RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month

Jason Thompson earned April's Rookie of the Month honors in the Republic League for last month's performance. The boyish Las Vegas first baseman might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Thompson hit .328 with 3 home runs, 15 RBIs and 12 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

Gehrke Claims CL Batter of the Month Award

On the heels of a very productive May, Jack Gehrke received Continental League Batter of the Month recognition today.

The battle-tested catcher hit .356 for the Havana Banana Sluggers and racked up 8 home runs, 22 RBIs and 25 runs scored.

Gehrke is hitting .308 for the season with 12 home runs, 30 RBIs and 31 runs scored. He has 44 hits in 143 at-bats and played in 43 games.


Joaquín Sosa Named Best RL Batter in May

Joaquín Sosa was at the top of the hit parade in the Republic League throughout May. For the outstanding month, the talented Chicago first baseman was chosen the Batter of the Month.

He compiled a .322 average with 39 hits, 7 home runs, 35 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

For the season Sosa is currently batting .286 with 14 home runs and 51 RBIs. In 53 games he has reached base at a .326 rate and scored 34 runs to date.

Continental League Names #1 Pitcher in May

Edmond Ward was the anchor in the Havana bullpen last month and snatched up the Continental League Pitcher of the Month honors for May. The 29-year-old is in the prime of his career and pitching like he intends to stay around baseball for quite some time to come.

He threw 14.2 innings over 13 relief appearances and collected a 5-0 record with 10 strikeouts and 1 save while etching his 1.23 ERA.

This season Ward has made 19 relief appearances and has 1 save. His record is 6-0 with 15 strikeouts in 20 innings with a 1.35 ERA.


Republic League #1 Hurler is Hernández

Upon hearing the news that he had won the Republic League Pitcher of the Month honors for May's work, Spring reliever Francisco Hernández merely smiled.

"That's just the kind of guy he is, and that's what makes him so good out there," his manager told reporters. "The guy has ice water in his veins. Nothing short of a League Championship could get this guy excited and I'm not so sure that'd do it either."

Hernández made 10 relief appearances burning through 14 innings as he racked up 4 saves, 20 strikeouts and held batters to a .184 average as he notched a 4-0 record and a 0.64 ERA.

For the year Hernández has 14 saves. In 23 relief appearances he has hurled 29.1 innings, fanned 39 and issued 5 walks with a 5-0 record. The Spring reliever has recorded a 0.61 ERA and allowed the opposition to hit .152 when he is on the hill.

Sendejo Voted May's #1 Newcomer

Sergio Sendejo of the Omaha Bees just ended a sensational month, but it didn't end there. He topped it off with the Continental League Rookie of the Month award.

The talented center fielder took the honor in May by hitting .310 in 28 games, racking up 35 hits, 8 home runs, 30 RBIs and 23 runs scored.

Posting a .298 batting average to date, Sendejo has 10 home runs and 48 RBIs.


RL Best Newcomer Trophy Awarded

Youngster William Pépin emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Ann Arbor deserved the honor, batting .269 with 3 home runs and 20 runs batted in. Is the month of May a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Pépin enjoy the limelight.

This year Pépin is batting .270 with 5 home runs and 30 RBIs. In 53 games he has scored 29 times.

CL Honors Ruíz, Best Hitter in June

León Ruíz battered Continental League pitchers all June and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around FOOL-X long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 32-year-old Ruíz told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 28 games, Ruíz hit .343 with 8 home runs, 18 RBIs and scored 26 runs.

So far this year Ruíz is batting .271 with 18 home runs.


Joaquín Sosa Winner in June

In June, Chicago Hitmen first baseman Joaquín Sosa claimed the Republic League Batter of the Month award.

The 26-year-old swung with confidence, hitting .358 with 10 home runs, 25 RBIs and 27 runs scored.

Hitting .310 to date, Sosa has 24 home runs and 76 RBIs. He has played in 80 games.

Shu Wins CL Top Pitcher Award

Kang-xi Shu's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 4-0 in June, the 26-year-old Plantana hurler has been named Continental League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 25 in 38.1 innings, logged an ERA of 1.88 and allowed opponents to hit .201 against him.

This year Shu has fashioned a 9-2 mark, 2.48 ERA and pitched 105.1 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .235 against him and he has logged 75 strikeouts.


RL Announces June's Best Starter

Portland starter Ken Hoffmann really put the chill on opposing teams in June and today was acclaimed the Republic League Pitcher of the Month.

He excelled with a 4-0 mark and 2.10 ERA in 5 starts. In 34.1 innings, he fanned 36 and walked 7.

This year Hoffmann has a 9-2 record with a 2.18 ERA in 16 starts.

Sendejo Heads the Rookie Class

First-year man Sergio Sendejo really swung a mean bat for the last thirty days in the Continental League and has been picked as the Rookie of the Month.

During the month he hit .373 with 15 doubles, 2 triples and 3 home runs. Sendejo also scored 22 times and drove in 22 runs.

So far this year Sendejo has hit .323 with 13 home runs, 70 RBIs and 62 runs scored.


RL Rookie Star Shines

For the last thirty days he outperformed all the other newcomers in the Republic League. So it was no surprise that Maricopa's right fielder Pat Joyner took the Rookie of the Month honors today.

In June he hit .305 as he ran up some impressive offensive numbers. In 23 games he collected 29 hits, 7 home runs, 17 RBIs and 18 runs scored.

Joyner is presently hitting at a .239 pace with 10 home runs and 29 RBIs. He has played in 56 games and scored 37 times.

Barrón Top Hitter in CL in July

Manchester's Bernardo Barrón wowed sportswriters in July with an award-winning performance. For his standout play he was voted the Continental League Batter of the Month.

He rang up a .427 batting average with 4 home runs, 28 RBIs and 20 runs scored. He also had 15 walks and a .505 on-base percentage.

Looking at his present stats, Barrón has compiled a .381 batting average in 104 games with a .463 on-base percentage, while hitting 20 home runs and driving in 78 runs.


July's Best RL Hitter is Kiyotaka Yamashita

Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 35-year-old Kiyotaka Yamashita put together a solid offensive month for Ann Arbor and was crowned July's top batter in the Republic League.

He batted .417 with 6 home runs, 17 RBIs and 14 runs scored.



This year Yamashita has socked 127 hits in 402 at-bats for a .316 average with 15 home runs. He is getting on base at a .420 pace and his totals also include 65 RBIs and 64 runs scored.

Freedom Hurler Named July's Top Starter

Jay Allen nailed down July's Continental League Pitcher of the Month award today, adding pressure on Washington to get a deal done before the 31-year-old becomes a free agent.

Allen seems unfazed by the talk. "We get a deal done or we don't," he told reporters, "I'm not worrying about next year. Worrying about next year isn't what wins awards, you know?"

He fashioned a 4-1 record, reeled off 31 strikeouts, worked 38.2 innings and held batters to a .231 average for the month as he posted a 2.33 ERA.

His record for the year is 6-13 in 21 starts and Allen has a 3.68 ERA.


July's #1 Hurler Announced: Moody Wins Award

The best at putting a stop to late-inning rallies in the Republic League in July was Jim Moody of the Portland Axemen. For his stellar work out of the bullpen, he has been named Pitcher of the Month.

He chalked up a 2-0 record, 12 relief appearances and 8 saves with a 0.00 ERA. Moody pitched 12.1 innings and rang up 11 strikeouts.

Moody has 27 saves this year. In 43 relief appearances he has tossed 44.1 innings, fanned 27, and given up 13 walks with a 5-4 record. The Portland reliever has recorded a 2.23 ERA and allowed the opposition to hit .189 when he is on the mound.

Great Month Gets CL Top Rookie Trophy

A veritable toddler to the Continental League, Danny Hunt just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for July.

Over the past month the 25-year-old third baseman for Alberta hit .391 with 36 hits, 2 home runs and 14 runs batted in. He also logged 7 walks and compiled a .440 on-base percentage.

This year Hunt is batting .292 with 8 home runs and 48 RBIs.


Joyner Wins Rookie of the Month

Swinging a hot stick in July, Pat Joyner picked up the Republic League Rookie of the Month Award today.

The 27-year-old right fielder for Maricopa lashed 25 hits as he put together a .298 average with 1 home run. He also drove in 9 runs, scored 12 times and drew 10 walks on his way to a .372 OBP.

This season Joyner is batting at a .255 clip with 11 home runs and 38 RBIs.

Mullets Hurler Named CL's Best Starter

Whether Fernando López stays in Oshawa beyond this season remains to be seen, but while he's here he's making the most of it. In August the 33-year-old certainly pulled out all the stops by winning the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

He put up some fancy numbers with a 3-0 record and and an ERA of 0.98. In 36.2 innings he struck out 23, surrendered 27 hits, 8 walks and proved to be a solid performer in 5 starts last month.

In season stats López shows a 8-12 record in 23 games, 148 innings, 120 strikeouts and a 3.28 ERA.


RL Selects Austin August's #1 Pitcher

Rod Austin has made fans throughout FOOL-X take notice over the past month with an exceptional 5-1 record. No pitcher in the Republic League threw better in August, garnering him the Pitcher of the Month award today.

In 6 starts Austin compiled a 0.84 ERA, putting up a 5-1 record, striking out 30 and tossing 42.2 innings.

To date this season Austin has compiled a 14-5 record with a 3.78 ERA in 27 starts.

Danny Hunt's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Alberta third baseman has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In August he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .343 with 5 doubles, 1 triple and 2 home runs. Hunt also scored 11 times and drove in 10 runs.

September's Best Batter Announced

Bernardo Barrón was declared the Continental League Batter of the Month today. Manchester's left fielder stroked 33 hits in 102 at-bats for a .324 average in September.

He also hit 6 home runs, drove in 18 and scored 18 runs.

In his 2129 season totals, Barrón has 32 home runs, .372 BA, .459 OBP, 113 RBIs and 96 runs scored.


Las Vegas's Pérez Snags September Batting Title

Fernando Pérez is in the final year of his contract with Las Vegas and today added a timely piece of hardware to his trophy case. Playing in 25 games in September the 28-year-old second baseman ripped Republic League pitchers for a .398 batting average, nabbing him the Batter of the Month award.

He also rang up 3 home runs, 20 RBIs and 21 runs scored.

If Pérez keeps up this pace, he'll cost someone a lot of money.

Pérez has a .292 average and a .409 on-base percentage for the year. He has picked up 158 hits, 4 home runs and driven in 51 runs.

CL's Top Pitcher in September Is Maeda

As Yutaka Maeda hoisted up the Continental League Pitcher of the Month trophy for September, rumors have already begun to swirl about whether he will leave Plantana once his contract is up at the end of the season.

Maeda put pressure on the Pirates to keep him around by posting a 4-0 record and an ERA of 1.46 over 37 innings last month. He also rolled up 24 strikeouts, increasing his value both to Plantana and to every other team in the league.

This season Maeda has compiled a 13-7 record with a 3.68 ERA.


Sosa Wins RL Top Pitcher Honors

Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Pablo Sosa still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in September. The 30-year-old starter for Chicago was named Republic League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 4 wins and no losses with 33 strikeouts in his 5 starts, putting up a fine 1.93 ERA in 32.2 innings of work.

For the year Sosa has a 14-9 record with a 3.60 ERA in 32 starts.

Hunt Voted September's Best CL Rookie

Almost everyone agreed -- fans, teammates, peers -- and BNN sportwriters, too -- that Danny Hunt was worthy of the Continental League Rookie of the Month award.

In the month of September the Alberta third baseman was a bigtime threat. The 25-year-old Alberta third baseman played in 27 games and hit .318 with 6 doubles, no triples and 2 home runs. Hunt also scored 9 times and drove in 20 runs.

So far this year Hunt is hitting .306 with 12 home runs.


RL Rookie Vote Goes to Thompson

Jason Thompson of the Las Vegas Wildcats has been voted the top Rookie in the Republic League.

In September he collected 28 hits, 8 home runs, 24 RBIs and 21 runs scored. He batted .364 with a .438 OBP.

This year Thompson is hitting at a .260 pace with 27 home runs and 93 RBIs. He has played in 126 games and scored 74 times.
