Great glovemen can range far and wide to make a backhand stop or an over-the-shoulder catch -- and the best usually make it look easy. Today the winners of the Continental League Slick Fielder Award for 2130 were announced. These awards for defensive excellence go to:

Ayala Is CL's Best Rookie

Things are coming up roses for Héctor Ayala of the Oshawa Mullets. This blossoming star finished his first year in the Continental League by taking the 2130 Kien-lung Teng Award.

The 23-year-old second baseman fashioned a .280 batting average with a .371 on-base percentage, solid numbers to go with his 25 home runs, 94 RBIs and 90 runs scored.


Taylor Grabs RL 2130 Rookie Honors

This year's outstanding rookie has been chosen and the honor goes to Cleveland left fielder Earnest Taylor. He received the 2130 Republic League Kien-lung Teng Award for his consistent play and solid numbers.

He finished the regular season with a .315 batting average, 32 doubles, 8 triples and 18 home runs. The 24-year-old Taylor also had 95 RBIs and scored 87 times.

Pirates Ace CL's Best Pitcher

The Mauro Morales Award for 2130 has been presented and the Continental League winner is Kang-xi Shu of Plantana.

"It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Shu. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Pirates star told reporters.

Shu excelled with an impressive 19-8 record in 33 starts. In 238.2 innings he yielded 209 hits and 39 walks, while striking out 209 and compiling a fine 2.26 ERA.


RL Best Mound Performer Named

The votes are in for the 2130 Republic League Mauro Morales Award. It has been bestowed on Andy McDermid of the Maricopa Rattlers.

The 30-year-old Rattlers ace finished the year with a 20-5 mark, logged 33 starts, threw 226.2 innings, yielded 170 hits, struck out 255 and held the opposition to a .208 batting average.

Super Season, Vargo Wins Bartolo Liriano Award

Adrián Vargo has been around FOOL-X enough to know a good hot streak when he sees one -- and he got to see one firsthand all year. For his standout run through the 2130 season, he's taking home the Bartolo Liriano Award in the Continental League.

The Plantana left fielder put up a batting average of .314 with 22 doubles, 1 triple, 21 home runs and 85 RBIs.


Yamashita Selected RL's Top Batter

It's been a year of triumph for veteran Kiyotaka Yamashita of the Ann Arbor Wolverines as he hit his way to the 2130 Republic League Bartolo Liriano Award.

The 36-year-old veteran compiled a .294 average and .395 on-base percentage by putting together 178 hits, 25 doubles, 3 triples, 35 home runs and 95 walks. He also scored 109 times and drove in 106 runs.

Really wanted one of those four SP's but didn't think I would land one at 6. I'm happy with that 1B though - he looks like he can be a stud! As someone else mentioned, this was definitely one of the better drafts we've had.
