Good speed and a good arm never hurt, either, but not always required. This year's all-defense team in the Republic League consists of:

2131 Best CL Rookie Picked

Jesús Guzmán of the Oshawa Mullets enjoyed a fine rookie season in 2131, culminating today with his announcement as the winner of the Continental League Kien-lung Teng Award.

During the regular season the 27-year-old budding star played in 160 games, hit .282, collected 172 hits in 610 at-bats with 13 home runs, 63 RBIs and 68 runs scored.


Soto Is RL's Rookie of the Year

It was a very productive rookie season for Chicago center fielder Claudio Soto. He made the club, made the starting lineup, then in the regular season put up numbers impressive enough that the Republic League presented him the league's Kien-lung Teng Award for 2131.

It was a season to remember for the 23-year-old Hitmen newcomer. In addition to hitting .248, Soto played in 162 games and collected 13 home runs, 61 RBIs and 105 runs scored.

Great Season For MacDormond, Wins CL Mauro Morales Award

The votes are in for the 2131 Continental League Mauro Morales Award. It has been bestowed on Paul MacDormond of the Omaha Bees.

The 31-year-old Bees ace finished the year with a 18-5 mark, logged 33 starts, threw 230.1 innings, yielded 185 hits, struck out 213 and held the opposition to a .218 batting average.

The Mauro Morales Award for 2131 has been presented and the Republic League winner is John Miller of Portland.

"It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Miller. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Axemen star told reporters.

Miller excelled with an impressive 17-8 record in 32 starts. In 206 innings he yielded 209 hits and 44 walks, while striking out 204 and compiling a fine 3.23 ERA.

Bernardo Barrón Chosen CL's Premier Hitter

What a way to finish off the year -- being honored with the 2131 Bartolo Liriano Award in the Continental League. It had already been a very special season for Washington's Bernardo Barrón, but today's announcement really put the icing on his cake.

All season long Bernardo Barrón gave opposing pitchers fits by hitting .358 as he collected 218 hits, 42 doubles, 2 triples, 38 home runs and 118 RBIs.


RL's #1 Hitter for 2131 Named

Kiyotaka Yamashita got just what he wanted after deciding to enter the free-agent market: a strong offensive performance in 2131, highlighted by his selection as the Republic League Bartolo Liriano Award.

The 37-year-old right fielder for Ann Arbor churned out a .312 batting average while amassing 186 hits, 33 doubles, 1 triple, 32 home runs, 103 runs and 105 RBIs.

His performance virtually guarantees him a lucrative payday from whichever team he signs with during the offseason.
