When Héctor Rodríguez stepped up to the plate in April, he did it with confidence and today he was honored with the Continental League Batter of the Month award.

The young Brooklyn second baseman posted a .339 batting average with 7 home runs, 23 RBIs and scored 21 runs. Rodríguez also worked pitchers for 14 walks to post a .407 on-base percentage.


Alvarado Gets RL Batter of the Month Trophy

Fernando Alvarado is in the final year of his contract with Colorado and today added a timely piece of hardware to his trophy case. Playing in 29 games in April the 28-year-old center fielder ripped Republic League pitchers for a .381 batting average, nabbing him the Batter of the Month award.

He also rang up 5 home runs, 22 RBIs and 22 runs scored.

If Alvarado keeps up this pace, he'll cost someone a lot of money.

Flores Is April's Best CL Hurler

Wilson Flores's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 5-0 in April, the 33-year-old Brooklyn hurler has been named Continental League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 25 in 42.2 innings, logged an ERA of 2.11 and allowed opponents to hit .185 against him.


Riverhawks Hurler Named RL's #1 Starter

Doug Sawyer hasn't been around the big leagues long enough to know that youngsters shouldn't be winning Republic League Pitcher of the Month. But when you put up numbers like his, you're going to get some notice.

In April the Hartford starter earned a 5-0 mark in 6 starts. He threw 45.1 innings, struck out 34 and compiled a solid 3.57 ERA.

CL Selects Rookie Star of the Month

A veritable toddler to the Continental League, Julián Ortíz just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for April.

Over the past month the 24-year-old right fielder for Napa Valley hit .327 with 36 hits, 5 home runs and 14 RBI. He also logged 3 walks and compiled a .345 on-base percentage.

César Peña's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Hartford right fielder has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In April he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

Ordóñez Brings Home CL Batter of Month Honor

Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 28-year-old Pedro Ordóñez put together a solid offensive month for Halifax and was crowned May's top batter in the Continental League.

He batted .323 with 5 home runs, 16 RBIs and 21 runs scored.



Thus far in 2195 Ordóñez is hitting .333 with 12 home runs, 35 RBIs, 40 runs scored and has compiled a .405 OBP.


May's RL Batter of Month Award Announced

May's Batter of the Month has been chosen by the Republic League. This month's trophy was awarded to the Montreal left fielder, Lee Hall.

He starred by hitting .308 with a .438 on-base percentage, totaled 28 hits in 91 at-bats, 11 home runs, 26 RBIs and 28 runs scored.

Presently Hall is batting .330 with 17 home runs and 52 RBIs. He has played in 53 games and scored 45 times.

May's Top Hurler is Caro

It was a very good month for Ánibal Caro in May. The 36-year-old veteran starter for the Brooklyn Brownstones outpitched everybody -- young and old -- to claim the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award earlier today.

Caro ran up a 4-0 record in his 5 starts during the month. In 39.2 innings he fanned 29 and recorded a 0.91 ERA.

To date this year, Caro shows a 5-3 record, 11 starts, 75.2 innings, 49 strikeouts and a 2.97 ERA.


RL Pitcher of the Month Goes to Suárez

"The kid had it all working last month," a veteran teammate told reporters. "He keeps up those kind of numbers, we might have to start inviting him out with us after the games."

Jesús Suárez put together a very solid month to take home the Republic League's top pitching honor in May.

The 25-year-old reliever threw like a veteran. In 16 relief appearances he raked in 10 saves and 12 strikeouts in 16.1 innings as he put together his 3-0 record and 1.10 ERA.

This season Suárez has crafted a 5-2 won-lost mark, pitched in 28 relief appearances and rung up 15 saves. He has a 1.95 ERA and has allowed 20 hits over his 27.2 innings of work, struck out 19 batters and walked 1.

Rookie of the Month Winner Announced

Julián Ortíz is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Continental League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In May the Napa Valley hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .299 average with 35 hits, 5 home runs and 19 RBIs.

Batting .313 to date, Ortíz has 10 home runs and 33 RBIs.

Ken Ames earned May's Rookie of the Month honors in the Republic League for last month's performance. The boyish Tokyo left fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Ames hit .236 with 7 home runs, 13 RBIs and 11 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

For the year Ames has hit at a .236 clip with 21 RBIs, 9 home runs and 26 runs scored.

CL Best Hitter Trophy Goes to Rodríguez

Aurelio Rodríguez battered Continental League pitchers all June and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around Front Office Offseason League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 27-year-old Rodríguez told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 27 games, Rodríguez hit .351 with 6 home runs, 21 RBIs and scored 22 runs.

Rodríguez is hitting .286 in 2195 with 53 RBIs and 14 home runs.


Torrid June Gets Hall RL #1 Batter Trophy

The Batter of the Month honoree for June in the Republic League is Montreal Royals left fielder Lee Hall.

He showed no mercy as he finished the month with a .368 batting average, 12 home runs, 32 RBIs, and 25 runs scored.

So far this year Hall is batting .344 with 29 home runs, 84 RBIs and 70 runs scored.

Best Starter Chosen by Continental League

Last month was a very successful month for Enrique Salazar of Brooklyn. So successful that he has been honored as the Pitcher of the Month in the Continental League.

Salazar shut down league hitters in fine fashion, rounding out June with an impressive 4-0 mark and 1.67 ERA in 5 starts with 22 strikeouts in 37.2 innings.

This year Salazar has registered 7 wins and 4 losses in 16 starts with a 3.56 ERA while registering 58 strikeouts and 17 walks in 93.2 innings.


RL Starter of the Month Goes to Thompson

Which Republic League hurler dominated in the month of June?
According to the voters who decide the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award, it was Bill Thompson of the Tokyo Catfish.

He put together a record of 4-0 with an ERA of 1.10 in 6 starting assignments. In addition, he struck out 27 in 41 innings.

This year Thompson has made 17 starts, thrown 111.1 innings, fanned 67 batters and walked 16. His won-lost record is 7-3 with a 2.34 ERA.

Youngster Luis Arellanos emerged as the latest Continental League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Brooklyn deserved the honor, batting .392 with 1 home run and 12 runs batted in. Is the month of June a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Arellanos enjoy the limelight.

On the year Arellanos is hitting .325 with 69 hits, 2 home runs, 28 RBIs, .387 OBP and has scored 32 runs.


Hirayama Voted June's Best RL Rookie

Noburo Hirayama had a standout June and today received the Republic League Rookie of the Month trophy.

Last month the 25-year-old Ann Arbor right fielder played in 26 games and hit .320 with 3 doubles, 1 triple and 8 home runs. Hirayama also scored 10 times and drove in 15 runs.

This season Hirayama has hit 16 home runs and posted a .283 batting average.

July's Premier Batter Announced

The Continental League Batter of the Month has been chosen for July and the trophy was presented to Elliott McKenzie of the Noblesville Millers.

He stood out this month with a .398 batting average, 39 hits and 9 home runs, along with 23 RBIs and 24 runs scored.

McKenzie is batting .291 this year with 26 home runs, 70 RBIs and 65 runs scored. He has 109 hits in 374 at-bats.


Great July Gets Peña RL Best Hitter Award

César Peña hit the baseball with consistency all month long and was voted the Republic League's Batter of the Month for July.

The Hartford right fielder batted .314 and posted 7 home runs, 25 RBIs and 21 runs scored. He also drew 6 walks for a .355 OBP.

In the 2195 season Peña is hitting .299 with 17 home runs.

CL Top Pitcher Award for July to Rivera

Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Rodrigo Rivera still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in July. The 33-year-old starter for Apex was named Continental League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 4 wins and no losses with 26 strikeouts in his 5 starts, putting up a fine 1.64 ERA in 38.1 innings of work.

His record this season is 9-7 in 22 starts and Rivera has a 2.59 ERA.

António Rodríguez has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in July and stole away with the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Marlboros bullpen ace collected 10 saves and 9 strikeouts in 13 innings, holding the opposition to a .178 average and posting a 2.08 ERA and a 1-0 record.

In the 2195 campaign Rodríguez has 33 saves. In 51 relief appearances he has tossed 57.1 innings, struck out 39 and yielded 9 walks with a 2-1 record. The Toronto reliever has recorded a 2.35 ERA and allowed the opposition to hit .252 when he is in the game.

CL Spotlight Shines on Rookie Star

July was a very good month for Dale O'Connor. The left fielder for the Cleveland Cyclones was named the best newcomer in the Continental League.

He captured the honor by hitting .279 in 24 games with 24 hits, 3 home runs and 7 RBIs.

This year O'Connor is hitting .262, produced 52 RBIs and 14 home runs, scored 43 times and gotten on base at a .301 rate.


Rookie Wiz Gets July Award in RL

Swinging a hot stick in July, César Peña picked up the Republic League Rookie of the Month Award today.

The 24-year-old right fielder for Hartford lashed 32 hits as he put together a .314 average with 7 home runs. He also drove in 25 runs, scored 21 times and drew 6 walks on his way to a .355 OBP.

This year Peña has hit at a .299 clip with 130 hits, 17 home runs, 73 RBIs and 74 runs scored.

Martínez Snags CL Batting Honor in August

When guys like Apex's Jesús Martínez win Batter of the Month awards, it just makes you feel good. In a productive August, the longtime Continental League veteran toyed with opposing pitchers all month long, collecting 34 hits in 94 at-bats.

The veteran center fielder hit for a .362 batting average and collected 6 home runs, 19 RBIs and 18 runs scored.

Currently Martínez is batting .273 with 22 home runs, 67 RBIs and 69 runs scored.

Wow, crazy pennant races this year! With two weeks left in the RL, we had three teams tied for 2nd place and a fourth lurking just behind them. And that wasn't even the league that needed a playoff.

It's days like this when I harken back to Alan doing the day by day thing at the end. That was always fun. I know Dan's always busy between taking care of himself and watching over his family, so I would never ask him to do that, but seasons like this do make me remember those season endings with fondness.

Tough break for the other RL teams. I didn't think my starting pitching would hold up enough to squeak into the playoffs.
