1967-1968: A Basketball Replay (of sorts)

For some reason, I was not able to get into my ABA vs NBA thread as a replay. I think it was because the results were to preordainded. So I did what any gamer worth his salt would do: held a random draft. Now I'm excited!

I'll use the NBA/ABA structure for the franchises and both leagues now have the 3-point shot as well. I'm already a couple games in and think this is more to my liking.

The opening week saw more than its share of fights. A total of 8 players were suspended 2-games for fight related ejections.

NBA East

Cincinnati Royals 2-0 for the week (2-0 overall)
This largely no-name club (Sam Jones is probably the closest to a star the Royals have) used tremendous defense in edging the Pistons and Warriors. The sub-.400 shooting Cincinnati bullied their opponents too should be a hallmark of this true team. The Royals need to improve on their free throw shooting (28-48, .583) to really make a mark as a potential contender.

New York Knicks 2-0 for the week (2-0 overall)
The imposing front line of rookies Mel Daniels, Bob Netolicky and veteran Cincy Powell looks to score inside early and often. The Knicks burnt the nets at a .625 pace in their game with Baltimore. Even starting guards Jimmy Jones and Maurice McHartley contributed a combined 26-35 shooting in that game. The lack of a "true" point guard may cause trouble down the line.

Chamberlain, Chamberlain, Chamberlain. In the Celtics' only game this week, the Dipper paced the team in points, assists and rebounds. There are some good role players here, Happy Hairston and Wali Jones for example, but this club will only go as far as Wilt's big shoulders can carry them.

Philadelphia 76ers 1-0 for the week (1-0 overall)
Lou Hudson and Charles "Chico" Vaughn poured in points and assists in the lone game against the wobbly Lakers. Both Gerald Govan (17 points) and Kendall Rhine (12 rebounds) contributed from the bench.

Baltimore Bullets 0-1 for the week (0-1 overall)
Let's just take a mulligan for the first one. The Bullets watched the Knicks light up the board for 135 in their opener, not the way this club wanted to get off. There is far too much talent here for this club to be this bad. With Jerry Lucas (29 points, 18 rebounds), rookie Walt Hazzard (11 assist) and Joe Caldwell (23 points from the bench) leading the way, I expect Baltimore to be a play off team when all is said and done. Center Bob Rule will miss 6 games, giving talented Walt Wesley or Rookie Phil Jackson major minutes in the pivot.

Detroit Pistons 0-1 for the week (0-1 overall)
The Pistons had planned to win with good defense and some gunners. Well, the defense was not very good (.485 shooting for Cincinnati) and the gunners (15-40 from Roger A. Brown and Willie Somerset) didn't hit enough shots. This is an intriguing team, but there isn't enough information to know where this club will sit in the East for the long term.

NBA West

San Diego Rockets 2-0 for the week (2-0 overall)
We know the Rockets can beat the Hawks at home, which they did twice. That doesn't tell us much about how strong this club might be.

Chicago Bulls 2-1 for the week (2-1 overall)
After dropping their opener to the Celtics, the Bulls caught a break with two slumping clubs at home. With playmaker Paul Neumann (7.3 assist) and starting forward Don Kojis out with and injury and suspension, the next few games will show if the Bulls have enough to win the weak West.

San Francisco Warriors 2-3 for the week (2-3 overall)
What a difference a road trip makes. The Warriors start the year with two quick wins at the Cow Palace, and then find the road a little less friendly. With Chet Walker coming off a 2-game suspension, hopefully there will be some more certainty in the line up. Lou Dampier can't shoot this badly (.345, 19.2 ppg) all season either.

Saint Louis Hawks 1-3 for the week (1-3 overall)
Outside of Nate Thurmond (currently on suspension) there has been very little consistency from any of the Hawks. Forward Walt Simon has two games over 20 points, and two with sub-15 points. Four players have been rotation out of the playmaker slot. Once roles are better defined, then the Hawks should have as good as chance as any in the West to make the playoffs.

Seattle SuperSonics 0-1 for the week (0-1 overall)
An opening night loss to the Warriors showed a little promise. Rookie Earl Monroe was unstoppable on the offensive end tallying 33 for his efforts. Bill Bridges pulled down 20 boards, showing this club has a physical presence too. The big blow was guard Cazzie Russell fouling out in 14 minutes of play, robbing the Sonics of that second scoring option. After Monroe, no one else really could put the ball in the basket. There might not be enough firepower here for Seattle to contend in the division.

Los Angeles Lakers 0-3 for the week (0-3 overall)
Just a mess. Billy Cunningham could be a force on offense, but he has fouled out of both games he has played. Clyde Lee is averaging 21.0 rebounds a game, but seems to run out of steam in the 3rd quarter. And someone seemingly is having a 1-15 (Howard Komives) or 1-10 (Jack Marin) or 2-10 (Craig Dill) shooting night. The game plan appears to be let Larry Jones launch as many shots as possible and hope for the best. This club could be playing for Elvin Hayes of the University of Houston really soon.

ABA East

Kentucky Colonels 1-0 for the week (1-0 overall)
Quite possibly the best front line in basketball. Zelmo Beaty, Connie Hawkins and John Tresvant (with Paul Silas off the bench) helped the Colonels outrebounded the Pacers 70-40 in their only game of the week. With Donnie Freeman ably handling the point, they could run away with the East.

Minnesota Muskies 0-0 for the week (0-0 overall)

New Jersey Americans 0-0 for the week (0-0 overall)

Pittsburgh Pipers 0-0 for the week (0-0 overall)

That is unless one of these inactive clubs can challenge Kentucky. The Muskies have a trio of Lenny Wilkens, Willis Reed and Rick Barry that could be a formidable line up. The Piper threesome of John Havlicek, Wayne Embry and Oscar Robertson could be just as good. New Jersey doesn't have much beyond guard Hal Greer and forward Bailey Howell. The ABA East could be a serious fight for first.

Indiana Pacers 0-2 for the week (0-2 overall)
The Pacers shot .390 in their two games last week. Take away Dave DeBusschere's 20-40 performance and the percentage drops to .363.

ABA West

New Orleans Buccaneers 1-0 for the week (1-0 overall)
This season will be the story of Bill Russell and Elgin Baylor. The Bucs were up on Houston by 20 when the two stars sat down; then the Mavericks made it a game. Russell and Baylor came back in the middle of the 4th and shut Houston down the rest of the way. Russell didn't block any shots, but really changed the complexion of the defense. Baylor was just as unstoppable on the offensive end. With Gary Bradds contributing 23 from the bench the Bucs should be an entertaining club this year.

Anaheim Amigos 3-1 for the week (3-1 overall)
The Amigos did all their damage on the road, making them the favorites in the West. With Walt Bellamy (22.3 ppg, 15.0 rpg) and Gus Johnson (24.0 ppg, 11.5 rpg) holding down the front line, the Amigos are looking for someone to step out in the backcourt. A series of guards have shined for moments, but none have put together a complete game.

Denver Rockets 2-1 for the week (2-1 overall)
Other than a horrific defensive effort against Houston, the Rockets have been a solid club the first week. However injuries to starting center Dewitt Menyard and rebounder Ron Reed weaken a thin front line. Jim Caldwell was getting the most minutes in the pivot anyway, but there really is no back up for him now. This club will have to play great team ball to get through this patch unharmed.

Houston Mavericks 1-1 for the week (1-1 overall)
The Mavs are a track meet club, averaging 121.0 for and allowing a point and half more a game. They can fill the buckets (they are shooting .555) but there is no player who can stop the opposition.

Dallas Chapparels 0-1 for the week (0-1 overall)
The Chapparels tried to outrun the Amigos in their only game of the week. Outside of Jerry West, no one was up to the task. Some decent players here, but how they fit together is a question.

Oakland Oaks 0-2 for the week (0-2 overall)
Another club that can't shoot straight, which is odd given the collection of quality point guards on the roster. If the baskets continue to not fall in, look for one of the four playmakers to be traded. Dave Bing (19.0 ppg, 2.5 apg, .375 pct) has been one of the many disappointments early.

SelzShoes High School Varsity Join Date: Apr 2005	Around the Associations The opening week saw more than its share of fights. A total of 8 players were suspended 2-games for fight related ejections. NBA East Cincinnati Royals 2-0 for the week (2-0 overall) This largely no-name club (Sam Jones is probably the closest to a star the Royals have) used tremendous defense in edging the Pistons and Warriors. The sub-.400 shooting Cincinnati bullied their opponents too should be a hallmark of this true team. The Royals need to improve on their free throw shooting (28-48, .583) to really make a mark as a potential contender. New York Knicks 2-0 for the week (2-0 overall) The imposing front line of rookies Mel Daniels, Bob Netolicky and veteran Cincy Powell looks to score inside early and often. The Knicks burnt the nets at a .625 pace in their game with Baltimore. Even starting guards Jimmy Jones and Maurice McHartley contributed a combined 26-35 shooting in that game. The lack of a "true" point guard may cause trouble down the line. Boston Celtics 1-0 for the week (1-0 overall) Chamberlain, Chamberlain, Chamberlain. In the Celtics' only game this week, the Dipper paced the team in points, assists and rebounds. There are some good role players here, Happy Hairston and Wali Jones for example, but this club will only go as far as Wilt's big shoulders can carry them. Philadelphia 76ers 1-0 for the week (1-0 overall) Lou Hudson and Charles "Chico" Vaughn poured in points and assists in the lone game against the wobbly Lakers. Both Gerald Govan (17 points) and Kendall Rhine (12 rebounds) contributed from the bench. Baltimore Bullets 0-1 for the week (0-1 overall) Let's just take a mulligan for the first one. The Bullets watched the Knicks light up the board for 135 in their opener, not the way this club wanted to get off. There is far too much talent here for this club to be this bad. With Jerry Lucas (29 points, 18 rebounds), rookie Walt Hazzard (11 assist) and Joe Caldwell (23 points from the bench) leading the way, I expect Baltimore to be a play off team when all is said and done. Center Bob Rule will miss 6 games, giving talented Walt Wesley or Rookie Phil Jackson major minutes in the pivot. Detroit Pistons 0-1 for the week (0-1 overall) The Pistons had planned to win with good defense and some gunners. Well, the defense was not very good (.485 shooting for Cincinnati) and the gunners (15-40 from Roger A. Brown and Willie Somerset) didn't hit enough shots. This is an intriguing team, but there isn't enough information to know where this club will sit in the East for the long term. NBA West San Diego Rockets 2-0 for the week (2-0 overall) We know the Rockets can beat the Hawks at home, which they did twice. That doesn't tell us much about how strong this club might be. Chicago Bulls 2-1 for the week (2-1 overall) After dropping their opener to the Celtics, the Bulls caught a break with two slumping clubs at home. With playmaker Paul Neumann (7.3 assist) and starting forward Don Kojis out with and injury and suspension, the next few games will show if the Bulls have enough to win the weak West. San Francisco Warriors 2-3 for the week (2-3 overall) What a difference a road trip makes. The Warriors start the year with two quick wins at the Cow Palace, and then find the road a little less friendly. With Chet Walker coming off a 2-game suspension, hopefully there will be some more certainty in the line up. Lou Dampier can't shoot this badly (.345, 19.2 ppg) all season either. Saint Louis Hawks 1-3 for the week (1-3 overall) Outside of Nate Thurmond (currently on suspension) there has been very little consistency from any of the Hawks. Forward Walt Simon has two games over 20 points, and two with sub-15 points. Four players have been rotation out of the playmaker slot. Once roles are better defined, then the Hawks should have as good as chance as any in the West to make the playoffs. Seattle SuperSonics 0-1 for the week (0-1 overall) An opening night loss to the Warriors showed a little promise. Rookie Earl Monroe was unstoppable on the offensive end tallying 33 for his efforts. Bill Bridges pulled down 20 boards, showing this club has a physical presence too. The big blow was guard Cazzie Russell fouling out in 14 minutes of play, robbing the Sonics of that second scoring option. After Monroe, no one else really could put the ball in the basket. There might not be enough firepower here for Seattle to contend in the division. Los Angeles Lakers 0-3 for the week (0-3 overall) Just a mess. Billy Cunningham could be a force on offense, but he has fouled out of both games he has played. Clyde Lee is averaging 21.0 rebounds a game, but seems to run out of steam in the 3rd quarter. And someone seemingly is having a 1-15 (Howard Komives) or 1-10 (Jack Marin) or 2-10 (Craig Dill) shooting night. The game plan appears to be let Larry Jones launch as many shots as possible and hope for the best. This club could be playing for Elvin Hayes of the University of Houston really soon. ABA East Kentucky Colonels 1-0 for the week (1-0 overall) Quite possibly the best front line in basketball. Zelmo Beaty, Connie Hawkins and John Tresvant (with Paul Silas off the bench) helped the Colonels outrebounded the Pacers 70-40 in their only game of the week. Minnesota Muskies 0-0 for the week (0-0 overall) New Jersey Americans 0-0 for the week (0-0 overall) Pittsburgh Pipers 0-0 for the week (0-0 overall) That is unless one of these inactive clubs can challenge Kentucky. The Muskies have a trio of Lenny Wilkens, Willis Reed and Rick Barry that could be a formidable line up. The Piper threesome of John Havlicek, Wayne Embry and Oscar Robertson could be just as good. New Jersey doesn't have much beyond guard Hal Greer and forward Bailey Howell. The ABA East could be a serious fight for first. Indiana Pacers 0-2 for the week (0-2 overall) The Pacers shot .390 in their two games last week. Take away Dave DeBusschere's 20-40 performance and the percentage drops to .363. ABA West New Orleans Buccaneers 1-0 for the week (1-0 overall) This season will be the story of Bill Russell and Elgin Baylor. The Bucs were up on Houston by 20 when the two stars sat down; then the Mavericks made it a game. Russell and Baylor came back in the middle of the 4th and shut Houston down the rest of the way. Russell didn't block any shots, but really changed the complexion of the defense. Baylor was just as unstoppable on the offensive end. With Gary Bradds contributing 23 from the bench the Bucs should be an entertaining club this year. Anaheim Amigos 3-1 for the week (3-1 overall) The Amigos did all their damage on the road, making them the favorites in the West. With Walt Bellamy (22.3 ppg, 15.0 rpg) and Gus Johnson (24.0 ppg, 11.5 rpg) holding down the front line, the Amigos are looking for someone to step out in the backcourt. A series of guards have shined for moments, but none have put together a complete game. Denver Rockets 2-1 for the week (2-1 overall) Other than a horrific defensive effort against Houston, the Rockets have been a solid club the first week. However injuries to starting center Dewitt Menyard and rebounder Ron Reed weaken a thin front line. Jim Caldwell was getting the most minutes in the pivot anyway, but there really is no back up for him now. This club will have to play great team ball to get through this patch unharmed. Houston Mavericks 1-1 for the week (1-1 overall) The Mavs are a track meet club, averaging 121.0 for and allowing a point and half more a game. They can fill the buckets (they are shooting .555) but there is no player who can stop the opposition. Dallas Chapparels 0-1 for the week (0-1 overall) The Chapparels tried to outrun the Amigos in their only game of the week. Outside of Jerry West, no one was up to the task. Some decent players here, but how they fit together is a question. Oakland Oaks 0-2 for the week (0-2 overall) Another club that can't shoot straight, which is odd given the collection of quality point guards on the roster. If the baskets continue to not fall in, look for one of the four playmakers to be traded.
