Maple Leafs News
- The Toronto Maple Leafs made a ground breaking deal today that has left fans and pundits alike scratching their heads. In a deal showcasing new GM Danny Wilson's philosophy of aggressive, hard hitting defense and gritty young forwards, the Leafs dealt team Captain Mats Sundin and Wade Belak to the LA Kings for Dustan Brown and Jack Johnson. Johnson is the centerpiece of the deal as he will be put in the Leafs opening night lineup alongside new captain Bryan McCabe. |

GAME 1: Ottawa @ Toronto
First Period An up and down first period saw the top line of the Senators move all over the ice and manage the games first goal as Dany Heatly scored from Eaves and Meszaros at 8:13 to make it 1-0 Ottawa. A Michael Peca penalty gave the Sens a great chance to score but Mark Bell stole an errant pass and broke in a lone on Ray Emery, sniping him top shelf glove side to tie it up on the SHG. Following another Leafs penalty, the Sens PP continued to struggle, leading to an odd man break following Darcy Tuckers penalty completion. Ponikarovsky made the dish across to Nik Antropov who put it through Emery to make it 2-1 and thus finishing off the scoring for the first. Second Period Our boneheaded play costs us finally as Hal Gill goes off for roughing at the 8:45 mark. The Sens PP gets it down low and works their to perfection with great puck movement and lots of skating finally leading to Mike Fisher coming out of the corner and burying it top shelf blocker side on Toskala for the PP Goal. Assists to Eaves and Vermette. We keep coming down the ice and getting shots on Emery but none in PSZ (Primary Shooting Zone) so we're settling for shots from the top of the cirlce out, something we must correct by getting the puck low and working from behind the net if we want to win this one. Third Perod Tied up to start the third the game kicked into absolute overdrive as 4:10 in Darcy Tucker scored on a quick wrister form Kubina and Toskala to give the Leafs a 3-2 lead. The potent Sens offense would jump right back though as 1:50 later Daniel Alfredsson tied it up from Corvo and Spezza on the Power Play. A crazy bounce off of Jason Blakes skate right to the front of our net on a bad outlet pass led to Shean Donovan scoring from point blank range to make it 4-3 Sens. Two minutes later Oleg Saprykin would score, from Schubert and Donovan to make it 5-3. The Leafs would cut the lead down to 5-4 with 5 minutes left on a beautiful outlet pass from Jack Johnson to Darcy Tucker who'd net his 2nd of the game but it was all for naught as Patrick Eaves scored the Empty Netter to ice it for the Sens as they skate away with a 6-4 win. 3 STARS 1st Star: Darcy Tucker (TOR) 2 G -1 A- 3 PT 2nd Star: Patrick Eaves (OTT) 1 G - 2 A - 3 PT 3rd Star: Jack Johnson (TOR) 0 G - 2 A - 2 PT |

GAME 4: Carolina @ Toronto
FIRST PERIOD We put together our best period of the year as we jump out of the gates laying the wood on the Canes, especially their star Eric Staal. We control the puck all over the Canes zone resulting in a Mike Commodore penalty and on the ensuing PP Alexei Ponikarovsky nets a one time goal from O'Neill and Colaiacovo to make it 1-0. The Leafs keep up as Tomas Kaberle scores on a beautiful rip from the point. Helpers from Kilger and Tucker help make it 2-0 Toronto. Jeff O'Neill would keep the momentum going as he nets his own goal from Colaiacovo and Toskala to make it 3-0. Carolina would take some momentum back as Craig Adams scored near the end of the period but a fight between Jack Johnson and Mike Commodore, with Jackson winning got the Leafs fans back on their feet to close out the first. SECOND PERIOD The bruising play continues for the Leafs as every chance we get to lay the wood we do. One specific hit by McCabe leads to an odd man rush by Jack Johnson who takes it deep around the net and puts a perfect pass to Darcy Tucker who slides it past Cam Ward to make it 4-1. That is how the second period would finish out. THIRD PERIOD The third period showed as good as we can be, we can be equally as bad. A goal by Ponikarovsky made it 5-1 and then we shut down for five minutes which allowed goals from Whitney and Staal to make it 5-3. The Canes clawed back but with the goalie pulled Dustin Brown scored in the open net to make it 6-3 and put a bow on a good effort for our club. FINAL SCORE TOR 6 CAR 3 |

HAHA, i never even thought of that. You did pick up 2 players i like, so I'll give you points. Mats Sundin ended up retiring after season one in my game, so based on that, its a great trade. I think you should make Tucker the captain though.

GAME 6: Toronto @ Buffalo
First Period We make our presence known early with physical play and puck possession, what we hope will be our staples as a team but Ryan Miller looks stellar early turning away all 15 shots he faces and we go to the break scoreless. Second Period A great PK from our boys and subsequent breakout leads Mark Bell in off the strong side and he rips a shot five hole on Ryan Miller to make it 1-0. Pavel Kubina with the helper. Just 11 seconds later Bell again finds the twine on a one timer from Colaiacovo and Steen to make it 2-0 and give us a hell of a lot of momentum. The period finishes out with Jack Johnson level Johcen Hecht with a hip check, sending him off the ice with the help of the trainer. Third Period Up 2-0, we don't let up off of the gas and thanks to great cycling of the puck down low Dustin Brown finds Pavel Kubina at the point for an open blast that beats Miller top shelf to make it 3-0. Kaberle also chimed in with an assist. Alexander Steen would score next on a great feed from Dustin Brown to make it 4-0. As Toskala battled for his first SO of the year Brian Campbell scored coming out of the corner to make it 4-1. Jeff O'Neill would get that goal back from Steen and Colaiacovo and then a nice one timer from Drew Stafford would give the Sabres the games final goal, but it's too little too late. Final Score TOR 5 - BUF 2 Three Stars 1st Star - Alexander Steen (TOR) 1 G, 2 A, 3 PT 2nd Star - Mark Bell (TOR) 2 G, 0 A, 2 PT 3rd Star - Pavel Kubina (TOR) 1 G, 1 A, 2 PT |

Good stuff, I can't cheer for Toronto or Tucker, but will be following along Was considering starting one up once the new rosters come out at the end of the month too, we'll see how motivated this gets me.

Already seeing this will be challening. Dealing Sundin really hurt us offensivley but I love Brown and Johnson and they more then make up for it with how I like to play. That said, we will be lucky to be anything more then a 6th seed. Thankfully, I have a lot of cap room to work with so my goal is to add a superstar in FA.

GAME 9: Atlanta @ Toronto
First Period An up and down first three minutes saw a lot of action that was finally highlighted by the streaking Mark Bell score on Lethonen from O'Neill and Gill to give the Leafs a 1-0 lead. Later on the in the period however, Garnet Exelby would drive home a blast from the point for a PPG, tying it up at 1-1. Just a few minutes later Jim Slater knotted the Thrashers second goal to give them a 2-1 lead before Dustin Brown tied it up at the 18:11 mark from Tucker and McCabe. Second Period The second period was relativley quiet as each team sured up defensivley, but Mike Peca managed to give Toronto the lead on a nice one timer from Ponikarovsky and Antropov at the 11:22 mark. Third Period The constant physical attack of the Leafs finally made it's mark on the Thrashers at they were beaten down to the point of no return. Jeff O'Neill would make it 4-2 at the 9:11 mark from Gill and then Peca took over scoring unassisted to make it 5-2, and then a minute later, on a feed from Tucker to give him the hat trick to make it 6-2. Jack Johnson also chimed in with a helper. Dustin Brown would keep the pressure up to make it 7-2 with a SHG and running Lethonen to the showers in the process. Assists from Gill and Kaberle. Dupuis and Hossa would score junk goals to make it 7-4 but the game was well in hand by then. The two win Canadiens play us remarkably tough and skate away with a 5-2 win for their third W of the season. I accidentally clicked out before getting the stats so I don't have a good write up for this one but we just got leveled. |

Pogge is doing okay, nothing spectacular. As far as Raycroft, my hope it to deal him soon, along with Gill because Kronvall needs to see some time with the big club. It'll also open up more money for FA next year where there should be quite a few big names available. Plus, I can accomplish all this while not really hurting our core because Gill is servicable at best and Toskala is definetly our #1. |

Lets hope you are right about the big name Free agents. During my season, I had to replace Sundin's offense via trade, because the pickings were very slim in the open market.

Trade
Toronto bolstered their weak crop of Centers today by trading Andrew Raycroft and Hal Gill to Tampa Bay for C Tim Taylor, G Johahn Holmqvist and a 2nd round pick. The deal opens up the way for young D Stefon Kronvall to see PT as well as clear some more cap space off of the books. |

First Period Daniel Alfredsson puts on a show in the first period by netting a natural hat trick on us and giving the Sens a huge 3-0 lead until Ponikarovsky scored with 14 seconds left from Steen and Kronvall to give us some momentum heading into the break. Second Period Steen gives us another big point, this time scoring from Wellwood and Colaialcovo but Toskala gives it right back on a weak goal scored by Dany Heatley to send us to the final period down 4-2. Third Period We come out blazing in the third but we end up down on a 5-3 PK when we get a huge boost. A turnover from Ottawa in their own end leads to a Jack Johnson blast for the SHG and cuts out defecit to 4-3. Then, 59 seconds later, Darcy Tucker scores another SHG to tie it up at 4. Sadly, a turnover in our own end leads to an unassisted Chris Phillips goal to seal it for the Sens 5-4. Near the end of the game we also lose Darcy Tucker to an injury from receiving a hip check. No prognosis yet. Final Score OTT 5 - TOR 4 Three Stars 1st star: Daniel Alfredsson (OTT) 3 G, 1 A, 4 PT 2nd star: Ray Emery (OTT) 61 saves 3rd star: Dany Heatley (OTT) 1 G, 2 A, 3 PT |

What's Holmqvist's rating? On the surface, looks like a solid trade. Taylor can play on the 3rd or 4th, less salary on the books. Nice trade.

Toronto @ Atlanta
First Period The Leafs come out hot, looking to end their 5 game losing streak as quick goals by Antropov (Johnson, Kubina) and Blake (Peca) make it 2-0. Bobby Holik would cut the deficit to 2-1 before Toronto was again on the attack with Bell (Taylor, Colaiacovo) and Steen (Ponikarovsky, Stajan) making it 4-1 going into the second stanza. Second Period Ilya Kovalchuk would score a snipers goal to make it 4-2 before Dustin Brown got dirty in front tipping in a Jack Johnson blast to make it 5-2 as we headed into the second. Third Period The fans got their moneys worth in the third as within the span on two minutes there were three fights. Bryan McCabe and Andy Sutton would be round one. Jack Johnson and Garnett Exelby would be round two and the main event was a battle between captains as Darcy Tucker and Bobby Holik went to town. Sadly this gave the Thrashers momentum and three unanswered goals from Krog, Hossa and Kovalchuck sent us into OT. Overtime Each team had chances but the extra frame ended 5-5 so we went into a shootout where Kovalchuck scored a highlight reel backhand goal to give the Thrahsers a 1-0 win in the shootout and a 6-5 win in the game. Final Score ATL 6 - TOR 5 Three Stars 1st Star: Ilya Kovalchuck (ATL) 2 G, 1 A, 3 PT 2nd Star; Bobby Holik (ATL) 1 G, 2 A, 3 PT 3rd Star: Marian Hossa (ATL) 1 G, 1 A, 2 PT |

Go read Game 25 .. it's the same f'ing scenario. We go up 3-0, let them come back, and the third period turns into one big offensive cluster f with Atlanta coming out on top 8-6 on the heels of a goal and 4 assists from Holik and 3 goals and 1 assist from Hossa. Worst part is Kovalchuck didn't play. |

Toronto News
We get a message from Vesa Toskala saying he wants out of Toronto for no apparent reason. Unfortunatley for him he won't get his way and he'll stay between the pipes for us until a deal can be made. |
