Worth emphasizing.

I would have expected this to be easier for those who have been on this board for a number of years and therefore know a little about me. I'm 100% certain you'll think it makes sense on multiple levels.

Was on "Do the Right Thing" myself.

Feel like "signature" is the best handle among the clues, perhaps... did some initial searching for "signature series" and "signature collection" and the like, but most came up with Disney stuff.

I can make vague connections from multiple words and phrases to The Shawshank Redemption, but I'm not sure that some of the themes in that book fit overall. It's not an awful fit, though, I don't think, as some of the overtones of that film probably fit with what I think I know of Mr. E Lou.

Goodfellas fits with some of it, but not convinced it’s the answer TBH

I don't think I'm letting my 12 year old watch Goodfellas or Shawshank.

It probably is. (That's not meant to be vague. I'm honestly not sure which of the more semi-direct clues gets you there fastest. It probably depends on how one thinks.)

I *love* Shawshank, but it doesn't fall especially high on the list of movies I'm excited to watch with my kid at this age.

Yet another movie that I'm fairly certain I'd enjoy, but have never gotten around to seeing.

A Few Good Men?

Thinking about legalism, writing a letter (the one asking for a transfer), signature moment (You can't handle the truth). It's also a movie I know you like and might not obviously seem rated R.

A really good guess, but not it.

EDIT: Related to fathers watching movies with their children, I am pretty sure that A Few Good Men is the first movie I saw and immediately wanted my dad to see. I saw it in the theater, rented it as soon as I could, and we watched it together. It’s among my last memories of time with him before his decline into Alzheimer’s.

Heh. And it also checks the “didn’t realize that was an R” box. However, it’s not the one.

Signature combined with the mention of a letter seems to point to a literal meaning, but I can't think of many movies that prominently feature somebody signing something.

Damn - I thought this one had a good shot at being it. It didn't fit perfectly but it fit well enough.

This isn't like a 1776 (not R-rated, right?) or Hamilton thing (too new?), right?

Hamilton was rated "R" on TV for language, good guess.

I'm not sure it is justified, but I am thinking about films that Ben enjoyed when he was growing up and is nostalgic over, so stuff that is either 80's or early 90's (or 70's or earlier with staying power).

Then again, after guessing Porky's, perhaps I should sit this one out and rejoin next time around.

Hamilton--yeah, too new. I'd made this decision before Hamilton was a thing, and it didn't beat it out.

The Patriot--Incorrect, but without going through them one by one, my guess is that this one probably hits in some way on 8 of the 10 clues. However, it definitely misses on the intended meaning of what I felt was the most critical clue, and I don't know of a way that it hits on a second important one.

Is anyone else kind of hoping that the movie ends up being something either wildly inappropriate or (even better) completely terrible?

Like the whole thing is his way of bragging that he made the poor kid watch Gigli.

For like a full day the only answer my mind could come up with was C Thomas Howell's 'Soul Man'. It's not even rated R.

Ok, yes...

"Signature" and "write my mother a letter" are the big two clues, in that order.

But there is a bit of duplicity involved in one of those clues.

I’m almost embarrassed to say I’ve also never seen either of these. Both probably could’ve been candidates if I’d seen them.

Anything where someone signs their name with a letter? Or maybe the movie title contains a single letter? I'm not getting a "baby's first R-rated movie" vibe from V for Vendetta.

Id like to say Beverly Hills Cop, 48 Hours or Trading Places, but I don't think they fit.

What we've found out is that there are a lot of R rated movies Ben should show his 12 year old.

Terminator 2 was my first R-rated movie (an awesome movie, I might add) and I turned out mostly ok

To be more clear, this is quite close, but missed on the two clues that I mentioned as most essential. It definitely doesn’t hit on the intended meaning of “signature,” and I don’t believe it’s anything like the one we watched with regard to letter-writing.

Final clue: I don’t know that I’ve seen more than 5 movies made since the first child was born. (Since then we’ve rarely wanted to waste 2 hours of a date night not talking/connecting, and it’s uncommon for me to stay up late enough to want to a tream an entire movie after the kids have gone to bed.) I can only think of 5 1/2 since then, and none of them are the one. They are Hidden Figures, 42, Selma, The Hate U Give, and Straight Outta Compton. I also started Black Panther on Netflix, but it bored me and I never finished it.

So, it was made before she was born.

As a real guess, I'll say The Matrix.

It surprised me by being R rated.
It focuses on a hero leading a group of rebels like the Patriot.
It's a really good film that one wants to share with others.
It came out before Ben's daughter was born.

The problem is that I don't see how it fits the other clues . . .

Not the Matrix. (Not particularly close on this guess.)

Did anyone guess Glory?

I haven’t seen it in a long time, but the letters, location, and similarity to some of the closer guesses make me think this is it right.
