Moungey Leads Park High Championship Dreams

It's a funny high school football season this year, as the WIAA decided to break up the conference alignments that formerly dotted the Wisconsin athletic landscape. They'll still retain the divisional levels, but no longer will we see here in southeast Wisconsin the Racine/Kenosha clashes, or, more importantly for those of us here in Racine, the annual Park/Horlick rivalry game.

But then, such a confusion of curiosity is only natural in a year where there's a Park High quarterback with a lot of buzz to him. Tim Moungey, a senior, is the Panthers' signal-caller and an unlikely key player at a school long noted for its punishing tailbacks and great linemen (Brent Moss and Johnny Clay, just to name the NFL pedigree backs, Kevin Barry an NFL offensive lineman of recent vintage).

Indeed, not since the greatest Park wide receiver in school history, J.C. Dawkins, has there been this much acclaim about a part of the Panthers' passing game.*

Moungey, who plays LOLB on Park's defense, is focused on getting the Panthers to their first state title since 2005 and their third overall (Moss and Dawkins' 1988 squad was the first). As for college, his top three choices are currently believed to be Florida State, Vanderbilt, and UNLV.

The Panthers had their first game of the season yesterday and routed Shorewood 31-0 at Horlick Field. Moungey earned Player of the Game, showing off skills with his hands and his feet on offense. He completed 8 of 15 passes for 125 yards and a TD with 0 interceptions and ran 6 times for 33 yards and another touchdown.

Two plays in particular stood out, the first a beautiful 14 yard TD pass to WR Wayne Harvey on 3rd and 2 on the first play of the second quarter to give the Panthers a 10-0 lead on the Greyhounds, who just moved up from Division 2 to Division 1 this season and looked clearly overmatched against the far bigger school. The second was a 25 yard run on 3rd and 7 with 3:02 left in the third, as Moungey caught Shorewood's defense unawares and rumbled the Panthers to the red zone, whereupon they scored via a run.

Reports after the game said that Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, and, in the biggest shocker of all, Big 10 school Minnesota called to express interest in the Park senior, both as a QB and an OLB.

"It was great to start the season on such a strong note," a smiling Moungey said. "Now we just have to keep it going and focus on winning that state championship."

* - You might also be interested in knowing that Dawkins is the school record holder in the 60 and 110 Meter High Hurdles and the 60 Intermediate Hurdles. He just missed winning the state title his senior year by .05 seconds. Park has a strong track tradition as well, especially recently, winning state titles in 1974, 1997, 1998, and 2000 for the boys and 1978 for the girls.

Park Pitches Second Straight Shutout, 22-0 Over Greendale

The War of the Panthers took place last night between same-named Park High and Greendale, but it was all Park in a second consecutive shutout for the defense, a 22-0 laugher that left the suburban version 0-2 and the urban variety a perfect 2-0.

Quarterback Tim Moungey played another quality game, connecting on 8 of 17 attempts for 155 yards and a TD, adding 49 yards on 7 rushes. He opened the scoring with a dazzling 77 yard bomb to sophomore wide receiver Cameron McKenzie who raced out to single coverage deep downfield and shot past the hapless Greendale defender to the end zone with 11 seconds in the first quarter.

But that wasn't the only highlight for Moungey. On defense, he whipped around the offensive tackle to hammer Greendale quarterback Brad Carp for a 6 yard sack and a forced fumble on 3rd and 12, making Greendale's subsequent recovery a moot point. He finished with 2 tackles, a TFL, a sack and a forced fumble at the LOLB position.

McKenzie won Player of the Game with 4 catches for 131 yards and a TD, a yardage total unheard of for I-formation, ground-game based Park.

Moungey Recruiting Update (QB)
Upgraded to 2* prospect at QB after the Greendale game and received his first scholarship offer, from Eastern Michigan. Schools calling this week included EMU's MAC foe Western Michigan again, another MAC school in Northern Illinois, and the second Big Ten school to express interest, Northwestern, the highest prestige program to call (3*).

Moungey Recruiting Update (LOLB)
Just like last week, Western Michigan called with interest, as did Big 10 Minnesota. Golden Gophers are said to have zero chance with the Park star, but that hasn't stopped the inquiries. Another conference stepped in, with Big 12's Iowa State calling.

EMU's Scouting Report - QB
Not the most accurate QB in the world, but has a knack for big plays both with his arm and his legs. Could be an exciting dual-purpose threat to revive interest in the program (4-8 in 2007, 3-9 in 2008, 0-12 in 2009, 2-10 in 2010). Will need to work on accuracy. Could become a bit too run happy, so may need to train to look for the pass first. Also occasionally throws into coverage. Overall, a player worth having on the team and projects as a starter, maybe even as soon as his freshman year.

Panthers Escape Two Rivers With 17-10 Win

The Park High Panthers were relieved to escape with a victory

For an instant, it looked as though prized Park High recruit Tim Moungey was going to literally lead his Panthers to another runaway victory. Moungey scrambled 3 times for 39 yards on the game's first three pass plays, but then he was sacked twice in a row for a total loss of 21 yards, forcing Park to settle for the field goal.

That first drive proved a harbinger of what was to come, as the Raiders' defense sacked the Park quarterback 4 times, forced him to run for short yardage on more than one occasion, and generated repeated pressure that caused numerous ill-timed throws that should have been picked off.

A poor day by the offensive line contributed to the problem. The guards were whistled twice for holding on two straight downs with 2:44 left in the third, and got flagged four times for holding last week against Greendale.

Those two holding penalties turned out even worse when Park's punter fumbled the ball trying to get the kick off and Raiders defensive lineman Jerome Schneider scooped the ball up and rumbled 46 yards downfield for the touchdown to make it a 10-10 tie.

But despite a horrific throwing day (4 of 13, 57 yards) and all the sacks, Moungey carried Park to the 17-10 win with a fourth quarter touchdown on a called quarterback smash near the goal line. That gave the quarterback his second rushing touchdown of the day and he finished with 12 carries for 12 yards and 2 TDs, earning him Player of the Game honors.

Moungey did not have any recorded statistics at LOLB.

Moungey Recruiting Update QB
Big 12 member Iowa State not only called to express interest, they offered him a scholarship on the spot. Other scholarships to play QB came from rumored early frontrunners UNLV and SEC team Vanderbilt, raising the number of confirmed quarterback scholarships to 4. The Minnesota Golden Gophers again called to try and get Moungey to look at them, and Central Michigan became the latest MAC team to give him a call.

Eastern Michigan became the first school to offer the Park High phenom a scholarship to play LOLB. Central Michigan expressed interest in him on either side of the ball, and, in the biggest surprise, Big 10 Illinois called about his playing on defense for the Illini, as did Northwestern, who previously appeared interested solely in Moungey's QB skills.

Panthers' Run Game Nets 31-0 Win

RB Derek Warren put on a performance not seen since John Clay went to Madison

The tradition of Racine Park's football team has always been around the running game. Last night, the Panthers got a new member of the legendary pantheon, as RB Derek Warren rushed 21 times for 192 yards and 2 TDs in a 31-0 rout of Greenfield High in Greenfield. That total included a 69 yard TD run early in the first half to make it a 17-0 game.

The Panthers continued to show off state-championship level defense, shutting out the Hawks and intercepting Greenfield twice.

Less stellar was D-I prospect QB Tim Moungey, who stuck to the air and struggled with his accuracy, completing just 7 of 20 passes for 125 yards and a TD, the last coming on a 33 yard rainbow to Dwight Everett. It was a beautiful play, one of the rare instances where Moungey was able to set his feet and deliver the throw. Much of the rest of the game was once again the offensive line doing a poor job of pass blocking, making the game perhaps closer than the final score indicated. All told, the Park senior signal-caller was sacked 4 times.

Big 10 academic powerhouse Northwestern offered a scholarship to play quarterback, while Central Michigan again called to try and lure him to the directional school. Illinois checked in about the Park senior playing QB and, in the biggest news of them all, 5* prestige Big 10 member Iowa called to express interest. The Hawkeyes are the most prestigious program by far to ask about Moungey.

Moungey Recruiting Update - LOLB
Nothing new to report here, with Northwestern, Central Michigan, and Minnesota all declaring that the Panther can play defense for them if he likes, a scenario that looks less and less likely as the season progresses.

Park's First Loss A 20-17 OT Thriller

Horlick Field is not only home to rotating home games between the three public schools of Case, Park, and Horlick, but also hosts Racine Raiders games. The Racine Belles of A League Of Their Own fame also played there when it was a baseball field.

An epic showdown between 4-0 Racine Park and 3-1 Waukesha North awaited at Horlick Field in Racine on Friday night and the game proved every bit worthy of the billing. Unfortunately for the Panthers, the Northstars were the winners in an exciting 20-17 overtime contest.

Paradoxically enough, it was Park senior QB Tim Moungey's best start of the season. He completed his first three passes and had a 25 yard scramble to take the Panthers deep in Northstar territory. But then the poor protection of the offensive line struck again inside the red zone. Moungey was sacked twice, including a devastating 21 yard loss that gave Park nothing after a lengthy opening drive.

No such problems awaited Waukesha North, as the Northstars sneered at the reptuation of Park's defense and staked out a 14-0 lead by the second quarter. Then, towards the end of the second half, the Panther defense intercepted and Moungey completed three straight passes for 81 yards to set up a field goal just before the half, giving Park a 14-3 deficit and the momentum heading into the locker room.

The Northstars got the ball to start the second half, and it was none other than Moungey who set the tone early, racing around the offensive tackle on second down to sack the quarterback. Another Park sack came on third down, and now, under shotgun, Moungey executed a drive that sparked the Panther rally, hitting Carlos Gray in the endzone for a 35 yard TD to make it a 14-10 ballgame.

That score held for the rest of the third quarter and most of the fourth, until, with a little over a minute to go in the game, Moungey found favorite target Cameron McKenzie for a 28 yard gain to have Park knocking on the door. A Derek Warren run later, Park was in the endzone with their first lead of the game, 17-14.

But Waukesha North came back to get the Chris Wright field goal and the game went into overtime. There, Park's offensive line allowed the fourth sack of the game, a 9 yard loss that caused Mike Johnson to shank a 36 yard field goal try.

Despite Park's own answering sack on the other end, Wright did what Johnson failed to, hitting a booming 44 yarder for the victory to equalize both teams' records at 4-1.

"It's frustrating, really frustrating. We wanted to go undefeated and to lose like this really hurts. All credit to North, though. They showed how good they are this year," Moungey said after the game.

Ironically enough, it was the Park star's best game of the season on both sides of the ball: 12/25 for 226 yards and a TD on center, albeit with -10 rushing yards due to the sacks, and 3 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and a sack.

His performance was enough to get him upgraded to a 3* QB and a 2* LOLB, according to Rivals.com and led to some interesting effects on the recruiting trail.

Moungey Update - QB
His elevation to 3* status meant that he received calls from not one, but *two* 6* programs, Big Ten's Ohio State and the Big 12's Oklahoma. Even more impressive, the Buckeyes and the Sooners are ranked #6 and #1 respectively, signaling Moungey's arrival to the big time. 5* Michigan also inquired about him at QB, but it's believed the Park senior has no interest in playing for Rich Rodriguez.

Iowa State and Western Michigan formally offered scholarships for him to play on defense, and the Broncos, Central Michigan, and Minnesota all again called to express interest in having him play OLB.

Defense Wins Ugly 10-7 Contest

Sun Prairie is noted for its national powerhouse cheerleading team

Many observers in southeast Wisconsin looked at Racine Park's road game against Madison-area high school Sun Prairie as a classic trap game. The Panthers were coming off an emotional OT home loss to Waukesha North and the Cardinals looked better than their 2-3 record indicated.

But even though Tim Moungey had his worst game under center yet (5 of 18, 72 yards, -18 rushing yards, 3 sacks), the Panthers' defense got the job done and RB Derek Warren did the work on offense, rushing 21 times for 170 yards and a TD.

Initially, it didn't look that way, as the Cardinals took a 7-0 lead on a drive when they made four straight third down conversions of 12+ yards before scoring on a screen pass on second and goal. Fortunately, Park's defense stiffened up the rest of the way, including Moungey's 2 tackles, to deliver the much-needed win..

One college scout at the game commented on Moungey, "Really rushed his throws tonight. Doesn't appear to trust his offensive line at all, which isn't surprising. Did have a nice 28 yard pass to Cameron McKenzie on Park's first drive. Also locked on to McKenzie too much. On the other side, his receivers dropped a couple passes and he showed real leadership and moxie, just like he did last week against North.

I see him as a kid who should probably go somewhere where he isn't rushed into the starting spot. Let him develop and fight his way up the depth chart at a good program. If he goes to a bad school to play right away, he won't ever learn to correct his deficiencies."

Despite the poor game, #6 Ohio State called again. The Buckeyes love the flashes of two-way threat he's shown, and with the 3.57 GPA, they know he's got the intelligence that Terelle Pryor didn't. Michigan also rang up a second time. The third school to call was none other than #21 ranked Notre Dame, increasing the number of high prestige schools interested in the Park Panther.

Moungey Update - LOLB
Vanderbilt officially offered a scholarship on defense. Minnesota called for the fifth time, and the Golden Gophers seem desperate to convince him to come to the Twin Cities and play D. Northern Illinois contacted again for the first time in a while, and made their first inquiry on Moungey's interest in defense. Yet the most intriguing call came from #15 Michigan State, the highest ranked team to inquire about Moungey on the defensive side of the ball.

Izulde Head Coach Join Date: Sep 2004	Park Pitches Second Straight Shutout, 22-0 Over Greendale Basic design of the other Park High logo, although the Panther is usually bicolored, as you'll see in next post's photo The War of the Panthers took place last night between same-named Park High and Greendale, but it was all Park in a second consecutive shutout for the defense, a 22-0 laugher that left the suburban version 0-2 and the urban variety a perfect 2-0. Quarterback Tim Moungey played another quality game, connecting on 8 of 17 attempts for 155 yards and a TD, adding 49 yards on 7 rushes. He opened the scoring with a dazzling 77 yard bomb to sophomore wide receiver Cameron McKenzie who raced out to single coverage deep downfield and shot past the hapless Greendale defender to the end zone with 11 seconds in the first quarter. But that wasn't the only highlight for Moungey. On defense, he whipped around the offensive tackle to hammer Greendale quarterback Brad Carp for a 6 yard sack and a forced fumble on 3rd and 12, making Greendale's subsequent recovery a moot point. He finished with 2 tackles, a TFL, a sack and a forced fumble at the LOLB position. McKenzie won Player of the Game with 4 catches for 131 yards and a TD, a yardage total unheard of for I-formation, ground-game based Park. Moungey Recruiting Update (QB) Upgraded to 2* prospect at QB after the Greendale game and received his first scholarship offer, from Eastern Michigan. Schools calling this week included EMU's MAC foe Western Michigan again, another MAC school in Northern Illinois, and the second Big Ten school to express interest, Northwestern, the highest prestige program to call (3). Moungey Recruiting Update (LOLB) Just like last week, Western Michigan called with interest, as did Big 10 Minnesota. Golden Gophers are said to have zero chance with the Park star, but that hasn't stopped the inquiries. Another conference stepped in, with Big 12's Iowa State calling. Could be an exciting dual-purpose threat to revive interest in the program (4-8 in 2007, 3-9 in 2008, 0-12 in 2009, 2-10 in 2010). Will need to work on accuracy. Could become a bit too run happy, so may need to train to look for the pass first. Also occasionally throws into coverage. Izulde Head Coach Join Date: Sep 2004	Defense Wins Ugly 10-7 Contest Sun Prairie is noted for its national powerhouse cheerleading team Many observers in southeast Wisconsin looked at Racine Park's road game against Madison-area high school Sun Prairie as a classic trap game. The Panthers were coming off an emotional OT home loss to Waukesha North and the Cardinals looked better than their 2-3 record indicated. But even though Tim Moungey had his worst game under center yet (5 of 18, 72 yards, -18 rushing yards, 3 sacks), the Panthers' defense got the job done and RB Derek Warren did the work on offense, rushing 21 times for 170 yards and a TD. Initially, it didn't look that way, as the Cardinals took a 7-0 lead on a drive when they made four straight third down conversions of 12+ yards before scoring on a screen pass on second and goal. Fortunately, Park's defense stiffened up the rest of the way, including Moungey's 2 tackles, to deliver the much-needed win.. One college scout at the game commented on Moungey, "Really rushed his throws tonight. Doesn't appear to trust his offensive line at all, which isn't surprising. Did have a nice 28 yard pass to Cameron McKenzie on Park's first drive. Also locked on to McKenzie too much. On the other side, his receivers dropped a couple passes and he showed real leadership and moxie, just like he did last week against North. I see him as a kid who should probably go somewhere where he isn't rushed into the starting spot. Let him develop and fight his way up the depth chart at a good program. If he goes to a bad school to play right away, he won't ever learn to correct his deficiencies." Moungey Update - QB Despite the poor game, #6 Ohio State called again. The Buckeyes love the flashes of two-way threat he's shown, and with the 3.57 GPA, they know he's got the intelligence that Terelle Pryor didn't. Michigan also rang up a second time. The third school to call was none other than #21 ranked Notre Dame, increasing the number of high prestige schools interested in the Park Panther. Moungey Update - LOLB Vanderbilt officially offered a scholarship on defense. Minnesota called for the fifth time, and the Golden Gophers seem desperate to convince him to come to the Twin Cities and play D. Northern Illinois contacted again for the first time in a while, and made their first inquiry on Moungey's interest in defense. Yet the most intriguing call came from #15 Michigan State, the highest ranked team to inquire about Moungey on the defensive side of the ball.
