Kirstie Alley has died of cancer. She was 71. I had a big crush on her in her "Cheers" days, but then she went from Scientology to full blown MAGA. Still, RIP.

Wow. No idea she was sick, apparently she kept it pretty quiet.

One of the horrible things about MAGA is the way I view the hard core supporters. While I am not happy about her dying I am also like, well, another vocal supporter gone, too bad...no great loss. It just makes me view them as irredeemable souls.

Damn, tWitch died. It was long enough ago that I remember watching him on So You Think You Can Dance and then he eventually joined Ellen's show. Appears to be suicide.

TMZ has fairly specific reporting about his wife running into an LAPD station saying her husband left home on foot without stuff which was unusual, and then separately, LAPD/ambulance got called to a hotel where someone died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot.

There was no mention of cause of death which, from reading tons of these things, usually means drugs or suicide.

aww...

My wife had a customer in Hawaii who was childhood best friends with Franco. She had the pleasure of having dinner with him a few times on various sales calls. She said he was a lovely man.

also fun fact, my last name is Harris, my sister was in grade school during the height of the Steelers runs. All the kids would call her Franco and she HATED it.

Man, the timing too, they are retiring his number Saturday By all accounts he was an amazing man, R.I.P

As a kid whenever we played sandlot Football we would always pick who we were, my friend was always Franco Harris and I had to be Chuck Foreman so we could never be on the same team LOL.

Franco was the guy I wanted to be as a kid on the playground. My favorite player, and even though I was still too young to understand the why he left Pittsburgh, I still tried to cheer for him with Seattle. I thought he was a football god. RIP

I don't even remember him playing, but he was always a presence in the media and around Pittsburgh. Always really positive and pleasant. The surprising thing is that he just seemed ageless. Never lost the dark beard, even into his 70's.

They have retired numbers and then "officially retired numbers." The only ones officially retired, before Franco, are Mean Joe Greene and Ernie Stautner. There are 9 or 10 others that are out of use but not officially retired (Bradshaw, Bettis, Polamalu, Jack Lambert among others).

Kind of wild - I was looking at Franco's reference page. He had 90 career fumbles, which seemed like a ton to me. But Walter Payton and Tony Dorsett were around the same number. I guess at some point in the late 80's/early 90's, someone figured out that running backs taking care of the ball was really important.

Pele has died at the age of 82. He was the biggest sports star in the world along with Ali when I was a kid. Even though soccer was definitely not as popular in the US when I was a kid, his name still carried a a lot of weight.

We had just watched one of the world news's death retrospectives and my wife said something along the lines of "Oh, they're doing this with a day left? That guarantees that someone big is gonna die and be left out." (Last year: Betty White.) Well, there you go.

Benedict XVI, the Pope Emeritus, has died in Vatican City at the age of 95 following a period of ill health.

Benedict, who was the first pontiff in almost 600 years to resign his position, rather than hold office for life, passed away on Saturday, according to a statement from the Vatican.

Don't know what to think of him and why he stood aside. He said age but my cynical self thinks he felt guilty about some events (e.g. handling of sexual abuse by priest) and didn't think he was worthy.

FWIW. I've watched The Two Popes a couple times and enjoyed the dialog between the two. I like to think it's 80% accurate but probably more 95% embellishment.

I have been watching some of the clips posted on Twitter of some of her interviews. The matter of fact way she would call people on their BS without even slightly raising her voice is jarring when compared to journalists today. It was going to be an interview. She would give the subject of the interview room for their talking points early but once that was done, the interviewee was going to answer her fair questions or be called out for doing so.

RIP Gianluca Vialli: Gianluca Vialli - Wikipedia

Such a fun footballer to watch in Italy and England. The time I lived in the UK coincided first with him playing in Serie A (so I watched him on Channel 4's Football Italia) and then he moved to Chelsea in 1996, eventually becoming player-manager (likely the most successful manager of the pre-Roman Abramovich era.

My favorite highlight was him and Chelsea playing in a blizzard against Tromso above the Arctic Circle as part of the Cup Winners' Cup: When Chelsea faced Tromso in an Arctic blizzard - The Set Pieces

I just learned that Eight Is Enough was based on the life of syndicated newspaper columnist Tom Braden. Then I read Tom Braden's Wiki and now I want a prequel of the show to be made.
