Pierce April's Best Hurler in RL
Friday, May 1st, 2048: Veteran Don Pierce put together quite a successful stretch in April for the Portland Axemen, earning himself the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

Pierce racked up a 4-0 record in 5 starts, posting a 1.53 ERA over 35.1 innings and striking out 31.

Abe Voted Best CL Pitcher in April
Friday, May 1st, 2048: "The kid had it all working last month," a veteran teammate told reporters. "He keeps up those kind of numbers, we might have to start inviting him out with us after the games."

Shinji Abe put together a very solid month to take home the Continental League's top pitching honor in April.

The 25-year-old reliever threw like a veteran. In 12 relief appearances he raked in 1 save and 14 strikeouts in 14 innings as he put together his 4-0 record and 0.64 ERA.

Palmeiro Awarded April's RL Top Bat Prize
Friday, May 1st, 2048: Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 29-year-old Héctor Palmeiro put together a solid offensive month for Ann Arbor and was crowned April's top batter in the Republic League.

He batted .270 with 12 home runs, 22 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

CL Announces Best Batter Award
Friday, May 1st, 2048: Arturo Caro received the Continental League Batter of the Month trophy earlier today for his efforts at the plate this last month.

"He might be getting older," Havana's manager told reporters, "But he's been around long enough to know what it takes to put a stretch such as this together... and he doesn't keep that to himself. He's always talking to the younger guys in the clubhouse helping 'em any way they'll let him. Arturo's value to our team goes farther than the numbers he puts up on the field."

To win the honor Caro put up a .400 batting average, 9 home runs, 28 RBIs and scored 23 times in April.

RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Friday, May 1st, 2048: Otto Rowe was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 24-year-old right fielder definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen April's Republic League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 23 games Rowe batted .298 for Maricopa, slapping 25 hits in 84 at-bats with 2 home runs, drove in 11 runs and scored 6 times.

Continental League Names Rookie of Month
Friday, May 1st, 2048: Youngster Yoshida Tanaka emerged as the latest Continental League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from St Louis deserved the honor, batting .364 with no home runs and 5 RBI. Is the month of April a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Tanaka enjoy the limelight.

Canseco Socks 300th HR
Friday, May 8th, 2048: The crowd roared -- they knew they were seeing history -- and Iván Canseco was delighted, too: The 35-year-old Beach Boys second baseman was making history with his 300th career homer. The crowd buzzed and roared again when Canseco stuck his head out of the dugout for a curtain call.

"Never, as a kid, did I ever think I'd hit even one," he told BNN after hitting No. 300 in a 6-1 victory over Portland. Canseco went 2-4 in the game, had 3 RBI, and scored 2 runs.

His all-time numbers show Canseco has compiled a .266 batting average and collected 2036 hits, 300 home runs and 1254 RBIs.

Caro Makes 400 HR Mark
Wednesday, May 13th, 2048: Arturo Caro circled the bases and raised his arm in triumph. He had finally hit his 400th home run. It was a homer for a lot of people: himself; his teammates past and present; his former managers and coaches; and especially his family, who sat near the plate cheering his every at-bat during the past few games.

Caro spoke with BNN and said, "I knew number 400 would come sooner or later. I had to keep reminding myself, 'Relax, relax, just let it happen, let it happen.' And it finally did."

His milestone homer came in the Havana Banana Sluggers 7-4 win over the Plantana Pirates. Caro went 3 for 4 in the game, scored 2 runs, and batted in 3.

Caro has put up a career batting average of .306 with 2141 hits, 400 homers and 1236 RBIs.

3000 Hits for Robertson
Saturday, May 23rd, 2048: Wes Robertson was bubbling over with joy, celebrating his 3000th hit in the Chicago 2-1 victory over the Raindrops at Chicago Stadium.

"I learned what hard work, focus, dedication, and opportunity can do. This is how it pays off."

The 39-year-old left fielder achieved that milestone with 1 hit in 3 at-bats to join the exclusive 3000-hit club.

His manager said, "Wes plays the same every day and every inning -- with all his heart. That's why he's such a special player."

In 2462 career games Robertson has batted .304 with 3000 hits with 611 doubles, 121 triples and 252 home runs. He has also collected 1383 RBIs and scored 1762 runs.

Beach Boys Frank May's #1 Pitcher
Monday, June 1st, 2048: Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Reginald Frank still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in May. The 35-year-old starter for Waikiki was named Republic League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 5 wins and no losses with 14 strikeouts in his 6 starts, putting up a fine 1.14 ERA in 47.1 innings of work.

On his stats sheet for the year Frank shows a 8-1 record, 10 starts, 76.2 innings, 25 strikeouts and a 1.64 ERA.

May's Pitcher of the Month Goes to Rivera
Monday, June 1st, 2048: Gabriel Rivera's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 5-0 in May, the 29-year-old Stafford hurler has been named Continental League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 41 in 40 innings, logged an ERA of 1.58 and allowed opponents to hit .197 against him.

To date this season Rivera is 7-1 with 11 starts and an ERA of 1.89 with 70 strikeouts in 71.1 innings.

Roa Snags RL Batting Honor in May
Monday, June 1st, 2048: When Esteban Roa stepped up to the plate in May, he did it with confidence and today he was honored with the Republic League Batter of the Month award.

The young Maricopa right fielder posted a .404 batting average with 6 home runs, 25 RBIs and scored 18 runs. Roa also worked pitchers for 15 walks to post a .483 on-base percentage.

So far this season Roa is hitting .331 with 11 home runs.

Medina Brings Home CL Batter of Month Honor
Monday, June 1st, 2048: Prospective free agents love to have hot streaks and Félix Medina is no exception. The Havana left fielder capped off a fine month by hauling in Batter of the Month honors in the Continental League.

In May Medina hit .340 with 11 home runs, 30 RBIs and 26 runs scored.

Currently Medina is hitting .291 and has collected 13 home runs, 39 RBIs and scored 36 times, while playing in 51 games.

Tadaaki Nagai Captures Rookie of Month
Monday, June 1st, 2048: Yes, Tadaaki Nagai is just a rookie. But he is a special rookie. Today the 23-year-old Waikiki starter was awarded the Republic League Rookie of the Month trophy for his standout performance in May.

He dominated the rookie class, registering 4 wins and no losses in 6 starts with 25 strikeouts in 33.1 innings and a 3.24 ERA.

Not bad for a first-year man.

For the year Nagai has a 5-1 record with a 4.03 ERA in 10 starts.

Rookie Gutiérrez Named Best in May
Monday, June 1st, 2048: Sancho Gutiérrez is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Continental League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In May the Plantana hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .337 average with 30 hits, no home runs and 11 RBIs.

This year Gutiérrez is batting .286 with 42 hits and 1 home run. He has scored 18 times and has batted in 16 runs.

Mullets Suzuki Sizzles with Cycle
Saturday, June 13th, 2048: Most fans have never seen a player get a single, double, triple and home run all in one game -- but it happened today at Pirates Park. Shimpei Suzuki of the Oshawa Mullets hit for the cycle against Plantana. He went 4-4 in the 9-0 victory, scored 4 runs and had 3 runs batted in. It was a day to remember for both Suzuki and the fans.

Shimpei Suzuki hit an RBI triple in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off Jeff Lyon in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, walked in the 7th and doubled in the 9th.

Batting .258 to date, Suzuki has 18 home runs and 55 RBIs.

Caro Hits for the Cycle
Monday, June 15th, 2048: The big buzz in the baseball world is about Arturo Caro's performance today at Molson Stadium against Oshawa. Caro had 5 hits en route to hitting for the cycle, leading the charge for the Havana 9-2 triumph over the Mullets. A cycle requires each of the four types of hits possible -- single, double, triple and home run. A batter has to have power, speed, and a little luck to do it.

"It was one of those games you dream about," Caro told the press. "I never expected to do something like this when I showed up at the park today. All you really want to do is hit it hard and put it into play. The hits will come." And the hits did come today. The 34-year-old third baseman rounded out his superb batting display with 5 hits in 5 at-bats, 3 runs batted in, and 2 runs scored.

Arturo Caro hit a two-run home run off José Estrada in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, doubled in the 4th, hit an RBI triple in the 6th, walked in the 7th and tripled in the 9th.

Caro is hitting .332 this year with 22 home runs, 59 RBIs and 54 runs scored. He has 85 hits in 256 at-bats, 39 walks and a .421 on-base percentage. Caro has played in 65 games.

Cardoza Earns RL's Best Pitcher Honor
Wednesday, July 1st, 2048: There was little doubt around the Republic League that Daniel Cardoza would be awarded Pitcher of the Month honors for June. Today, they made it official, naming the 22-year-old Ann Arbor Wolverines starter the latest honoree.

He thoroughly dominated the hitters who stood in against him, holding them to a .206 batting average while fashioning a 2.00 ERA in 5 starts. His record for the month was 4-0 in 36 innings of work.

In 16 starts this season Cardoza has recorded a 7-4 record and a 4.13 ERA.

CL Relief Ace Morgan Named Best Hurler
Wednesday, July 1st, 2048: Paul Morgan has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in June and stole away with the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Freedom bullpen ace collected 5 saves and 22 strikeouts in 15.1 innings, holding the opposition to a .170 average and posting a 1.76 ERA and a 5-0 record.

Morgan has worked 38 innings in 35 relief appearances thus far this season and picked up 13 saves. He has dished out 51 strikeouts and walked 15 with a 7-2 mark and a 1.89 ERA.

López Swings for the Cycle
Saturday, July 4th, 2048: "It's too bad I can't do that every day," António López said with a smile to reporters after today's game. "It would do wonders for my batting average." López had every right to be in a good mood after hitting for the cycle today against Portland at Gambler Anonymous Palace. The Wildcats won the ballgame 16-3, he hit for the cycle, had a 4-for-5 game and boosted his batting average up a few points. The 34-year-old Las Vegas center fielder chalked up 4 runs batted in and 4 runs scored for the game, too.

Who says you can't have it all?

He told the press that a triple is the tough hit to get in a cycle. "As soon as it left the bat, guys jumped off the bench and were rooting hard for me to have enough gas to get there," López said. "It was hard to enjoy it... I was breathing too hard... you got to really be in shape to run out a triple."

António López singled in the 2nd, doubled in the 4th, hit a solo-shot off Luis Jiménez in the 5th, hit a two-run triple in the 7th and grounded out in the 8th.

So far this year in 82 games López is hitting .243 with 12 home runs, 52 RBIs and 54 runs scored.

Donlon is batting .320 lifetime with 2500 hits, 508 doubles, 75 triples, 449 home runs, 1749 RBIs to date. He has also scored 1501 runs.

Street Slams Milestone Homer
Saturday, July 18th, 2048: At The Brewery Ludovico Street smashed his 300th career home run in a game against St Louis today. The 34-year-old right fielder had a hand in the Chicago Southpaws 10-1 victory with 2 home runs and 4 RBI. For the day he went 3 hits-4 at-bats.

At the press conference after the game, Street downplayed his achievement.

"Obviously, I've hit 300 home runs so I belong in that 300 club. But when you talk about the other guys that have done it, I'm not as good as they were. Those guys were the greatest of all time. I've just been able to scrape together some good years and stayed healthy and gotten there."

In his career Street has played in 1467 games with a .262 batting average. Among his 1423 hits are 259 doubles, 42 triples and 300 home runs. He also has scored 935 runs and driven in 945 runs.

New York Starter Named RL's Top Pitcher
Saturday, August 1st, 2048: Emílio Martínez really strutted his stuff in July with 5 wins and 1 loss and walked off with the Pitcher of the Month Award in the Republic League. The New York starter was good news for his club, but bad news for the opposition.

In 37 innings of work, Martínez limited opposing batters to 34 base hits and a .248 batting average. He totaled 29 strikeouts, issued 5 walks and had a 1.70 ERA.

In 26 starts this season Martínez has gathered 12 wins while suffering 4 losses. He has pitched 150 innings, allowed 150 hits, struck out 122 and has a 3.42 ERA.

Macías Is July's Top Starter
Saturday, August 1st, 2048: This month the Continental League spotlight fell on pitcher Pedro Macías of the Stafford Terriers.

What a July he had!

A fine 3-0 won-lost record, 3.00 ERA, 5 starts, 33 innings pitched and 27 strikeouts -- good enough to get him the CL Pitcher of the Month.

To this point in the season Macías has 10 wins and 5 losses and a 4.26 ERA.

RL Batter of the Month Honors to Arrington
Saturday, August 1st, 2048: Today New York's Michael Arrington was named Republic League Batter of the Month for July. He slammed opposing pitching hard all month long, bashing out 29 hits in 87 at-bats.

With a .333 batting average, 9 home runs, 28 RBIs and 21 runs scored, he was a solid choice.

In 102 games this season Arrington has compiled a .338 batting average with 129 hits and 21 home runs. He has also scored 78 times and knocked in 88 runs.

Havana's Caro Snaps up July Batting Award

Saturday, August 1st, 2048: Arturo Caro is in the final year of his contract with Havana and today added a timely piece of hardware to his trophy case. Playing in 25 games in July the 34-year-old third baseman ripped Continental League pitchers for a .360 batting average, nabbing him the Batter of the Month award.

He also rang up 9 home runs, 20 RBIs and 21 runs scored.

If Caro keeps up this pace, he'll cost someone a lot of money.

This year Caro is batting .321 with 130 hits and 32 home runs. He has scored 83 times and has batted in 84 runs.

RL Picks Rookie of the Month
Saturday, August 1st, 2048: Otto Rowe certainly made his presence felt in the Republic League in July. The gifted right fielder for Maricopa ripped opposing pitchers for a .235 batting average and was the top votegetter for the Rookie of the Month trophy.

He won it by going 24-102 in 27 games with 4 home runs, 21 RBIs and 12 runs scored.

Presently Rowe is batting .251 with 96 hits and 20 home runs. He has knocked in 66 runs and scored 44 times.

Plantana Newcomer July's #1 Rookie
Saturday, August 1st, 2048: Sancho Gutiérrez earned July's Rookie of the Month honors in the Continental League for last month's performance. The boyish Plantana shortstop might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Gutiérrez hit .293 with no home runs, 8 RBIs and 12 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

Hitting .289 to date, Gutiérrez has 4 home runs and 37 RBIs. He has played in 91 games.

Sunday, August 16th, 2048: The Cleveland Naps had something to celebrate today even though they dropped a 9-4 decision to Waikiki. The reason -- the splendid slugger Jim Lynn hit his 300th career homer in today's contest at Waikiki Beachpark.

"I'm fortunate to be here," Lynn told the media after the game. "The Naps have a classy organization and some great fans. Homer #300 was for them."

Homer #300 for St Cloud's Nation
Thursday, August 27th, 2048: St Cloud's outstanding second baseman Stanley Nation joined the 300 home run club today at Fog Bowl with a booming blast in the Raindrops win over the Southpaws. They topped Chicago 10-9.

On his milestone day Nation had 1 hit in 5 at-bats with 2 RBI and 1 run scored.

Tongue-in-cheek he told the press, "Don't tell me when I get close to the next milestone. Just tell me after I reach it. It will be easier to hit that way."

During his career Nation has notched 1431 hits and a .253 average with 300 home runs and 961 RBIs.

200 Wins for Plantana's Árias
Friday, September 25th, 2048: What would you do after you had just won your 200th game? Run around Memorial Stadium III doing cartwheels, jumping for joy and waving to the crowd? Well, maybe you and I would do that, but not Pedro Árias -- that's not his way.

After he notched number 200, the 40-year-old Plantana hurler spoke to the press like he always has -- in a soft, quiet voice. He wasn't doing any cartwheels or even anything resembling a jump for joy. "Obviously it feels very good," Árias commented. "To win this many games, you've got to have a lot of help."

Árias got his milestone victory by beating the Washington Freedom 6-0. He held them to 3 hits in 7 innings and rung up 3 strikeouts with 1 walk.

After sharing his thoughts with the press, he went to the clubhouse. There he was greeted by the guys who had helped him get #200. His teammates showered him with champagne and then gave him a rousing round of applause. That got to him -- for the first time today, Árias's face broke into a big smile.

Árias has a lifetime record of 200 wins and 205 losses and a 4.55 ERA.
