The Gators rolled to a 37-24 win over Mexico City. The Aztecs played better than expected, and moved the ball very well overall, but the youngsters just couldn't keep up with the Lowcountry offensive juggernaut. The key numbers...
  • Irving Donovan carried 25 times for 156 yards. His longest carry of the day was 14 yards, and he had seven carries of 10 yards or better. That's some serious consistency. Stevew seemed to play a lot of Pass-Aggressive, and Donovan made 'em pay.
  • Morris Marrero was very, very good as well: 19 for 30, 329 yards, 4 TDs, 0 INTs. He was the League's Offensive Player Of The Week.
  • WR3 Rufus Farrell had a banner day: 8 catches for 119 yards and 3 TDs.
  • Darnell Chamberlain chipped in 5 catches for 117 yards.
  • We only had to punt once, in our first possession of the day.
  • The return game was strong, too. Chamberlain run back 4 punts for 44 yards, and the Chamberlain/Ford combo averaged over 25 yards on four kick returns.
  • C Clifton Carpenter was 7 for 12 in KRBs with a Pancake, and RT Pat Buchanan was 4 for 5 with a pancake.
In other division action, Jax won in overtime, and Curacao and Savannah both lost, and pretty much have already dropped off the map for any contention this year. As predicted, the Southeast is a two-horse race.

Up next week, we've got a big matchup against cartman and the 4-1 Driftwood Rabid Javelina.

Week 7 Preliminaries...

Based on the stats, there would appear to be some question as to whether or not we can run the ball against the Rabid Javelina. However, unless they've got a bunch of players who are better than advertised, I believe we'll be able to put up solid rushing numbers against them, and we clearly have an advantage over their secondary.

Man, we suffered a frustrating loss. We outgained the opposition 401-243, but lost 24-21. Our special teams was the primary culprit. We had three field goals blocked, including a potential game-tying one at the end of regulation. The Rabid Javelina also returned a punt for a TD, and averaged 27 yards per kickoff return as well. The offense moved the ball pretty well, and the defense stuffed the run game (25 carries, 48 yards) and neutralized the passing game (16/27, 208 yards, 0 TDs). Here are our stats, heading into the bye week:

Marrero's performance has been nothing short of brilliant. Getting him without giving up a first round pick has been huge for us. Barring injury, I see him being able to keep us in title contention for 4-5 seasons. He's leading the league in passing yards, yards per attempt, TDs, and passer rating.

Donovan's more of a workhorse than I'd expected. If he remains healthy all year long, then our picking of Stinnett in the top 12 may prove to have been overkill. He's leading the league in rushing.

Chamberlain is looking like an absolute freak so far. Because of my low number of short passes, I VERY rarely have receivers near the top of the league in YAC, yet he's #2. He leads the league in yards and yards per catch.

Given that 11 of our first 12 picks were offensive players, it's no surprise that we're #1 in total offense, and #29 in total defense.

I haven't had time to do game-by-game updates, but a quick recap:
  • Lost 24-21 to Jax
  • Won 31-24 over Savannah
  • Won 31-12 over a strong Toledo squad.
Currently, we're 7-3, and one game behind Jax. We have the chance to have a statistical trifecta that I've never seen:

QB Marrero is 16 yards behind the league leader in passing yards.
RB Donovan leads the league in rushing by 54 yards.
SE Chamberlain leads the league in receiving by 102 yards.

Overall, we're 2nd in rushing, 1st in passing, first (429.3) in total offense, and first (29.1) in points per game. We're 28th (335.0) in total defense and 26th (21.3) in total offense. If you like offense, check out a Lowcountry game, 'cause you're bound to see some.
