Crap. Do I even have a chance to clear the next height or is my injury too bad?

King,

You do have a chance to clear, the only limitation this injury will cause is forcing you to quit after 7 attempts - so basically you have 1 more jump.

And I'll need to know you intentions ASAP, because 16' is next and I need to know if you're planning on attempting it. If I don't hear from you this morning, I'll run with the information I've already recorded.

In case I had not made it clear, Mello is finished jumping.

EVENT 8 - POLE VAULT

16' 4"

-----------------------------------

Lesgettham announces he will attempt this height

Mighty annouces he will attempt this height

-----------------------------------

Legettham's strategy to give a shot at his personal best worked out in the hight jump, but it didn't work out here - as he clips the bar on the way up. (7)

Palmer can't clear his first attempt (7)

Mighty cat get over the bar on his first attempt (7)

Babson can't clear on his first attempt (5)

Elli can't clear on his first attempt (7)

Night's easily sails over the bar (3)

Palmer announces he has finished jumping

Babson can't clear on the second attempt (6)

Elli announces hs have finished jumping

Babson fails to clear on his 3rd and final attempt (7)

-----------------------------------

Legettham finishes his event with a height of 15' 4"

Mighty finishes the event will a height of 15' 8"

Babson finishes the event with a height of 16' 0"

Elli annouces he will stop at a height of 16' 0"

In a move that isn't overly surprising, Ivanov has consulted with trainers, and it has been determined that continuing the event is not in his best interest - therefore he is withdrawing.

EVENT 8 - POLE VAULT - Status Report

The only athlete left in the competition is Nights. He has already won the event, but the decathlon isn't about winning events it's about maximizing each one - so the higher he goes the more points he'll get to move up the board. I have instructions from him, but the one situation he described that he would want to think about occured - so I'm waiting on new instructions before we continue. Hopefully, I'll have them tomorrow and we can wrap up event 8.

-----------------------------------

Night's hot streaks of easily clearing ends as he isn't event close to clearing this height on his first attempt. (5)

Nights can't quite clear on his second try. (6)

Night's chest skims the bar on his 3rd attempt and it wiggles off the platform. (7)

-----------------------------------

EVENT 8 - POLE VAULT - Review

The big winner in this event was...

Gunner. He didn't perform great, but he also didn't lose ground to the field. As long as he doesn't fall on his face or get injured, I expect he'll be very satisfied. Mello's risky strategy paid off, but he still has a lot of ground to make up, even to get into the medal contention. Babson also had a good event.

The big losers, not counting Gonzalez, who's injury probably kills his medal hopes and Ivanov, who had to resign was...

Nights. Yeah, he won the event, but he was capable of clearing 17' 8" and anything under 17' is disappointing. Had he cleared even 17' he would have gotten about 100 additional points and may have put himself within striking distance of Gunner. Cat also preformed extremely poorly, in fact, so poorly I believe he'll be in last place when then leaderboard is posted.

A LOOK AT THE LEADERBOARD

Gunner
is really in the driver's seat at this point, and things don't get any better for the challengers, because Gunners is very good in the next event.

Nights made a nice jump into second and since he's also good in the Javelin and Lesgettham is injured - he probably is well positioned to at least take home a silver.

Lesgettham's effort has been admirable taking into account the injury he's been dealing with. He'll be hard pressed even with his lead to hold on to 3rd place.

The rest of the field is pretty tightly bunched, the only ones I think definately don't have a shot at a medal are, Cat, Palmer, and Soldier.

The injuries to Lesgettham, Ivanov and Gonzalez probably helped Pflaggstettler more than anyone. He's primed to jump into the medals in the next 2 events and it appears the biggest challenger from behind is going to be Kappe.

Mello:

1.) Normal
2.) Normal
3.) Conservative if he has no score. Normal if he does have a score.

If he hits the max for normal after any throw, he wants to stop to avoid injury risk.

Normal all three, not much chance to win, or rest for the 1500, so I'll go for it. of course, near max means sit down.

I'm still waiting on instructions from a few people - and I'll begin posting results as soon as I receive them.

I also have a few people who have already sent in instructions for all 3 attempts - that because of the results might want to reconsider their instructions. So when the results of throw 1 are posted read them carefully and make sure you let me know if you wish to modify your original instructions.

EVENT 9 - JAVELIN - Throw 1

Pflaggstettler - a nice starting throw of 211'.

Lesgettham - 198' for the first effort - not bad considering he's still dealing with the injury he sustained in the hurdles.

Yellope - 214' get's David a number to build on.

Palmer - strides towards the line - tosses the javelin and in an effort to stay behind the line he twists awkwardly. The throw is a foul and he appears to have twisted a knee.

Mighty - Foul

Gonzalez - Another competitor dealing with an injury - 180' is the best he can do on throw one.

Mello - A good first effort of 213'

Babson - Brian's first throw looks like a carbon copy of Mello's - same trajectory - same basic speed and the result....the same 213'.

Kappe - clears 200' with a conservative approach - 208'

Soldier - 194'

Gunner - The leader - as has been the case throughout this meet - he puts himself in a good spot with his first throw - a great 229' effort - it might be good enough to win the event.

Elli -a huge throw - as it sails down the field it becomes obvious that Gunner's toss won't win the event outright. The official measurement...232'

Cat - a short 170' effort

Nights - has a score but he'll need to do better to stay in 2nd place - 189'

I don't like being injured.

EVENT 9 - JAVELIN - Throw 2

Pflaggstettler - he crosses the line on the toss and fouls.

Lesgettham - second toss looks very similar to the first - but it actually measures out several feet shorter - 191'.

Yellope - does exactly what you are supposed to do - build on a good first throw - the second toss is very good - travelling a distance of 224'

Palmer - with his knee tightly wrapped he steps up to the line and begins his stride for his toss - with the pain of the injury plainly visable on his face - he gruts as he launches his 2nd throw. The toss is very good and it comes down just short of where Yellopes was measured. The official measurement is - 222'

Mighty - A big second throw easily overcomes the initial foul on this event - 225'

Gonzalez - improves slightly - 182'

Mello - can't better throw 1 - 207'

Babson - foul.

Kappe - foul

Soldier - foul

Gunner - Leadin the event with a good throw already in his pocket - he over strides trying to get as close to the line as possible and his toe crosses - foul

Elli -Happy with his initial 232' effor - Elli passes

Cat - a big improvement - still towards the bottom of the event standings, but a toss of 204' will bring significantly more points that a 170' effort

Nights - also gets into the 200' range - 209'

If anyone wants to change their previous instructions they can, but if not...
