1947 April- We 18-7 and lead the division by 1.5 games over the Giants. We lost our closer, Ray Scarbough, for 3 weeks with wrist tendinitis. Irvin hit .435 for the month, in fact everyone outside of Lorenzo Davis is crushing it. Our pitching has been very solid as well. May- Rough month, we ended it 34-18 with a 1.5 game lead over the Giants. George Suttles will miss a month with a quad tear. Satchel Paige has an achilles issue and will miss a couple of weeks. Luke Easter broke his hand and will miss a couple of weeks. Willie Wells, who isn't hitting at all, broke his collarbone and will miss a month. The lineup is still killing it but the pitching has slipped some, speficly 5th starter Jesse Flores and Paiges replacement Spec Shea. June- Injuries have really decimated us this year. We end June at 50-29 and tied for first with the Giants. Ray Dandridge missed 3 weeks with a shoulder issue. George Suttles missed 3 weeks a shoulder issue as well. Hilton Smith missed 3 weeks with a back strain. Irvin is hitting .388, Easter is .332 with 12 homers, Gibson has 20 dingers and Campanella is having a breakout season. Paige has been phenomonel and Day & Radcliff have both been good. Some bad news now. Our finances have really been shitty, we aren't drawing very well at all despite winning 3 straight titles. I think we're very much viewed as the little sisters in this city and It's all I'll be able to do to keep us abover water heading into the offseason. July- We end the month at 66-36 but we've opened a 5 game lead on the Giants, we may be in the clear. We lost Sacrbough again for 3 weeks with an achiles injury. Ted Radcliff broke his foot and will miss a month and a half, that hurts. Damnit! Leon Day tweaked his knee and will miss a month. I didn't want to do it but I'm calling up our best pitching prospect, Lew Burdette, from AA. Jesse Flores, who has been sucking all year, hurt his shoulder so I'm calling up our 2nd best pitching prospect, Blackie Schwamb. Lorenzo Davis broke his finger and will miss a month. Is the hardest setting on mogul just everybody getting injured? We've also had to sell off some prospects to get some cash and try and stay above water. August- We're 85-50 with an 8 game lead. We're going to win the pennant but it appears as if our run is coming to an end. Roy Campanella broke his hip and will miss close to 2 months, probably the rest of the season, so yeah. Hilton Smith out 3 weeks with a leg issue, yay. Willie Wells sprained his ankle and is out a couple weeks. September- We finish the season 100-54 and win the League by 13 games. We'll face the AL champ Yankees who went 98-56. Irvin led the league in hits again, with 202, he also led the league in runs with 128. Gibson placed 2nd in homers behind Ralph Kiner with 39, Irvin and Easter tied for 8th with 24. Gibsons 98 RBI were good for 10th in baseball. Paige led baseball with a 2.13 ERA, Leon Days 17 wins placed him tenth. We're almost $8,000 in the hole though so we'll have to retool in the offseason for sure. Luckily we only have 1 arbitration eligable guy, backup Catcher Andy Seminick, but we'll still have to trim a ton of salary to move forward. |

1947 World Series The 47 World Series was another remarkable 7 game affair between us and the Yankees. We took game one at home, 3-1 behind Satch. They clobbered Ted Radcliff in game two, winning 10-5. We took games 3 and 4 in New York to put them on the brink but down 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth of game five, Charlie Keller hit a 3 run bomb off of Al Gerheauser to give them the lead. We scored one in the ninth but it wasn't enough and the series returned to Philly. Radcliff got beat up again and they coasted to an easy 8-4 win to set up a seventh and deciding game between Leon Day and Spud Chandler. Pee Wee Reese had an RBI double to give them a 1st inning lead but we would counter with two runs, one of which came from a Luke Easter homer, in the bottom of the inning to make it 2-1. A Josh Gibson RBI single in the third made it 3-1. Hank Bauer would knock in a run in the top of the fourth to make it 3-2 and Mickey Vernon would homer in the sixth to tie it up at 3-3. In the bottom of the seventh, Irvin would single, steal second and score on a Dandridge single to put us up 4-3. In the eighth, Chandler singled and Keller doubled to lead off the inning, Reese would place Chandler with a sacrifice fly and we brought in Scarbough to relieve Day. He allowed an RBI single to Joe Gordon and the Yankees took a 5-4 lead. A Hank Edwards pinch hit RBI single in the bottom of the inning tied it again at 5. A wild affair. In the ninth, Johnny Lindell singled off of Andy Karl to score Frankie Hayes and put the Yankees back ahead 6-5. In the bottom of the ninth we were down to our last out with nobody on and Luke Easter at the plate. He blasted one into the left field bleachers to improbably tie the game at 6-6. In the bottom of the tenth, Suttles and Northey led off with back to back singles, putting runners at the corners and setting the stage for pinch hitter Eddie Miller to single up the middle and score Suttles and give us our 4th straight title. Dandridge hit .394 in the series and while Easter struggled, I'd say hitting two bombs in game 7 more than makes up for it. Gibson hit .318 and Ron Northey had 7 hits in 18 at bats. Playing in the series and getting four home games got us enough cash to get out of debt, but just barely. We have Willie Jones ready to play 3B and Del Ennis capable of playing a corner outfield spot so we may have to look long and hard at moving some players. If we go another year like this we'll be well in debt and it will be much harder to get out of.

1948 Off season Willie Wells retired at the age of 41. In his four seasons he had 339 hits for a .247 average, 15 homers, 136 RBI, 186 runs scored, 25 doubles, and 27 steals. He owned a .363 OBP and a .650 OPS. More importantly, he commited just 5 errors in 2758 innings at shortstop. We traded 3B Roy Dandridge to the Boston Braves for a 21 year old 2B prospect named Roy Hartsfield and $40,000. I didn't want to do it, but Dandridge is 34 years old and Willie Jones is ready to play everyday. It was a move that had to be made. We moved SS Dick Seay, SP Ted Radcliff and a couple of minor leaguers across town to the Athletics for 27 year old 3B Mickey Rutner who is nothing more than cheap organizational depth. This was nothing more than a cost cutting maneuver. We sent LF George Suttles to Detroit for 20 year old pitcher Billy Pierce and $13,000. We trimmed more salary by sending infielders Eddie Miller and Frankie Gustine to the Yankees in exchange for a decent pitcher name Butch Wensloff and a catcher and a shortstop, neither of whom are anything special. Hilton Smith was one of 4 players sent to the Cubs in exchange for middling 31 year old pitcher Hi Bithorn. It saved us about $40K in salary. We extended the contracts of 2B Lorenzo Davis for 4 years at $31K per year, Josh Gibson for 3 years at $41K per year, Luke Easter for 4 years at $35K per year, Roy Campanella for 7 years at $30K per year, SP Leon Day for 5 years at $40K per year. This leaves only Irvin and Paige, both of whom want and deserve more money than we can offer. We'll play out the year and hope our coffers get padded now that we've trimmed a good deal of salary and see about extending them later in the year. This is clearly not the same team, outside of Paige who is old, and Day, we are untested. The lineup should still be ok with Campanella, Easter and Gibson in the middle and Irvin and Davis at the top but I wouldn't be surprised if we did not win the NL this season. |

1948 Season
April- We finish the month 16-10 and half a game behind the Giants. May- We're 30-24, 3 games behind the Giants. Our starting SS Wally Flager and Roy Campanella both spend a couple weeks on the DL. Irvin, Davis and Campanella are all hitting very well, Easter is eh, Gibson is powerful. Butch Wensloff has sucked and Lew Burdette will take over his spot in the rotation. Day and Paige have struggled, our two best starters have been Spec Shea and Billy Pierce. We're still losing too much money. June- We have our best month of the season so far and we're 50-32, half a game behind the Giants. Luke Easter, who is really struggling and making us regret his new contract, breaks his collarbone and will miss about 3 weeks. Irvin continues to be out of this world, in fact our whole lineup is really hitting well. Our pitching is coming around as well. Unfortunately we're close to going in debt and likely will very soon. July- We have an amazing July and end it 70-37 with a 5.5 game lead on the Giants. Irvin is hitting .386 with 22 homers. Gibson has 27 blasts. Campy is hitting .353. Our pitching is really good. August- Despite 3B Willie Jones missing most of the month with a shoulder separation, we still finish it 92-43 and 6 games up on the Giants. September- We end the season 103-51 and win the league by 8 games. We will meet Boston, who also went 103-51, in the world series for the second time in three years. Monte Irvin leads the league in runs but falls short of 200 hits, collecting 194 to place 4th. Del Enis and his 176 hits is 9th. Gibsons 40 homers puts him 1st in baseball. Irvin has 28 to finish 5th. Gibson and Campanella finish 7th and 10th in RBI with 99 and 94. Billy Pierce is amazing. The 21 year old leads the league with a 1.70 ERA and 23 wins. Lew Burdett at 1.90 and Spec Shea at 2.30 finish 2nd and 4th in ERA. Paige collects 18 wins. We're almost $11,000 in debt and will once again need to use the postseason to get out of hock. Pierce is arbitration eligible so that's gonna be a quandary, and Paige and Irvin are free agents, bleh. |

1948 World Series Quick write up here on the series as I'm moving along swiftly. We split the first two games in Boston and games 3 & 4 in Philly. Tied at 2 games each, down 5-3 in the bottom the eighth, two me on for Luke Easter and I shit you not he blasts a 3 run shot to give us the lead that we would hold. We went back to Boston and closed them out in game six, 5-3 to win our 5th straight title. Campanella hit .360 with 7 RBI, Gibson was .320 with 2 homers, Easter went .391 with 2 homers and 6 RBI. Spec Shea went 2-0, throwing 17 innings with a 1.06 ERA. The bad news is we're still in debt and more changes will have to come next season. |

1949 Off Season Because of our debt, Irvin and Paige are nonnegotiable and become free agents. We have to let our SS, Wally Flager walk as well. Billy Pierce gets $75,000 in arbitration but we most assuredly will have to trade him. We send Billy Pierce to the Cubs for a decent 20 year old pitching prospect named Johnny Kippstein and enough cash to get us out of debt. We use that money to bring Irvin back in the fold with a 5 year deal at $75K per. This gives us a two year window with very few contracts that'll need to be renewed. We'll have to deal with arbitrations but who cares, I want more titles. To that end we sign Phil Rizzuto to a 5 year deal at $10K per season. We make a trade to add a couple of young pitchers to our staff, Curt Simmons who will start and Marv Rotblatt in the pen. We're almost $200,000 over budget but so what. I guess, but it could only be about those guys for so long, I think I've accomplished what I wanted to do with the initial set of guys, now I've got to move forward and I'm interested in playing through the modern era and seeing what happens in other areas. I'll be doing capsules on everyone once their playing days end though.

1949 Season April- We went 15-10 and are 2.5 games behind the Giants and a half game behind the Cubs. We haven't really hit yet, and two of our starters, Leon Day and Butch Wensloff have been awful.
May- Terrific bounce back month that we finished at 34-18 and 2.5 games up on the Giants. Josh Gibson missed a couple weeks with a back sprain. Irvin and Davis are coming around and Easter is hitting .322 with 10 homers, good to see him putting a good season together. The pitching is coming around as well. June- We finish June with a 53-26 record and a 5.5 game lead on the Cubs. Hell of an amateur draft. Mantle went 1st to the Browns, Bunning to the Cardinals, Mays to the Senators, Matthews to the Braves and Backs to the Pirates. Our primary setup man, Dick Fowler, has a vertebrae issue that will force him out the entire season, damn. Easter is killing it this year and Curt Simmons is pitching his brains out. July- Not a great month, we had a losing record and finish it 66-40 with a 1 game lead on the Giants. Curt Simmons missed two weeks with a broken finger. Campanella is having a down year, Jones and Ennis aren't playing that great. The pen is average but the starters are still putting up good numbers. August- At the end of August we're 84-51 with a 2 game lead on the Giants. September- On the 16th, with a week left in the season we're tied with the Giants. We call up young stud Tommy Lasorda to be our primary setup man. It doesn't help. We finish the year losing 8 out of 10 and lose the pennant to the Giants by 2 games. Damn. Well, we put all our eggs in this basket and came up short but I've got to take another run at it next year while there's still time, even though we're $100,000 in the hole. Irvins 174 hits put him in the top 10 and 114 runs put him 3rd, Gibson was 3rd in baseball with 32 homers and Easter was 6th with 30. Burdettes 2.71 ERA and Simmons 2.95 both put them in the top 10 in ERA while Burdettes 19 wins placed him 10th. |

1950 Offseason We make a few minor trades to add some pieces to our pen and with young lefties Lasorda and Marv Rotblatt we should have a pretty good relief corps. Our pitching depth however is pretty bad. We can't take on any salary, we can't increase any of our operating budgets, so this is really pretty much the last year. Gibson, Spec Shea and Ray Scarborough are all their final contract years and there's nothing we can do to keep them. We're going for it all but if we're out of it in late July we will have to blow the team up. In the end we got very little support from the fans, which may have to do with us being considered the second team in the city, the fact that we went black and never went back, who knows, but I'm proud of the run this team has had. Let's get one more for the road, shall we? |

1950 Season April- We went 19-7, 3 games up on the Cubs. Everyone is raking like the good old days and the pitching has been solid. May- 37-16, 6.5 games up on the Braves. Dick Fowler, who hadn't been pitching that well anyway, missed a couple of weeks. Ennis and Rizzuto are struggling some but our hitting and starting pitching continues to be very solid. June- 57-23, 11.5 games up on the Cubs. Willie Jones broke his elbow and will miss about 3 months. Ron Northey replaced a struggling Del Ennis as our everyday Left Fielder. July- 71-35, 10 Games up on the Giants. August- 89-46, 13 Games ahead of the Giants. Monte Irvin, Josh Gibson & Roy Campanella each missed a couple of weeks with minor ailments. Everyone should be back shortly though, including Willie Jones. September- We finish the season 103-51 and win the pennant by 15 games over the Giants. We will square off with the Red Sox, who went 94-60 and won the AL by 2 games over the Yankees, in the World Series. We only lost $45,000 on the year because our operating expenses were cut dramatically, hopefully nobodies development declined that badly. Lorenzo Davis was 10th in the league with 171 hits. Easters 34 dingers placed him 3rd and Gibson with 27 and Davis with 26 also placed in the top 10. Easters 97 RBI was good enough for 9th. Davis scored 106 times and Irvin 98 to put them both in the top 10. Curt Simmons and Cal Hogue both placed in the top 10 in ERA and Hogues 19 wins were good enough to tie him for 6th in the game. |

1950 World Series We took game one in Boston in a tightly contested 6-5, extra inning affair between Bob Feller and Lew Burdette, highlighted by Willie Jones 10th inning homer. Irvin and Davis also went deep. Luke Easter didn't play because of hip soreness, he'll also miss game two. We rolled in game two, winning 9-1 behind Cal Hogue. Gibson had 3 hits including a homer, drove in 3 and scored 3 times. Irvin and Northey also added 3 hits each. Back at Shibe for game 3, Curt Simmons tossed a 4 hit gem as we won 3-0 and inched closer to another title. Gibson added 2 more RBI. Bob Feller staved off the sweep in game five, as they got to Leon Day for 5 runs in the first two innings and coasted to a 6-1 win behind Fellers complete game. We wouldn't let it go back to Boston though, as Monte Irvin, perhaps in his last game in a Phillies uniform, collected 4 hits and drove in 4 runs to lead us to a 7-3 victory behind Burdette and clinch the title. Irvin hit .429 in the series, Davis scored 6 times, Gibson knocked in 6 runs as we just overpowered them. It feels so good to get this one. |

Because of our debt situation, we lost backup outfielder Johnny Wyrostek, closer Ray Scarborough & Josh Gibson.
Arbitration saw Burdette & Simmons get big raises and Spec Shea get a small raise. We can't add any salary so we're kind of behind the 8 ball here. Do we try and move forward with this roster or do we start breaking it up? The interesting thing is that I think I can win with the pitching staff I have, but I wont be able to put any money into scouting, development or our medical staff. The lineup, even without Gibson, still has a ton of talent. Hmmmm. Problem is, we have a ton of guys in their last year and we can't do anything to resign them. Davis, Easter, Burdette, Simmons, Shea, Rotblatt will all walk next year for nothing. I'm really gonna have to take a little bit to think on this. I could always keep everyone and see how we're doing come the trade deadline but that's a big risk too. |

1951 Offseason We traded Phil Rizutto & Spec Shea for some depth pieces, 4 players in all, none of whom stand out but it saved us about $20,000. We have a kid named Clem Koshorek who is more than capable of playing SS for us anyway. We made a very nice deal, sending 3 minor leaguers to the Browns to get 21 year old SP Bob Purkey who had a good year last year and has some upside. Even better is that he's under team control for another two years. These moves have made me decide to make another run here. Why the hell not. Wish I still had Gibby though  Scarborough went to the hated Giants and Gibson signed with the Senators. I slashed our operating budget to next to nothing so we're projected to actually make a small profit this year. We've never won AND made money, that would be something. 1951 Season April- We went 16-10 despite losing Willie Jones for 3 weeks with a sprained ankle. We're 3 games behind the Giants. The bullpen is really struggling, we have a young closer Marv Rotblatt who's lost 3 games. Our hitting and our starting pitching has been solid though. May- We end May 31-22, 3.5 games back of the Giants. Of course we're gonna be right on the brink of knowing whether to start moving people or hunkering down for a pennant chase. Bob Purkey will miss about 3 weeks with a broken hand just when he was starting to find his groove. Our bullpen is not so great but there isn't much we can do. June- We have our best month of the year and end June 51-30 and 1.5 game lead on the Giants. Early in the month we called up our best pitching prospect, Mel Held, and installed him as closer to try and help our bullpen. Bob Purkey developed elbow tendinitis not long after coming off of the DL so he's out another couple of weeks. Ughh, in the middle of a terrific year, Curt Simmons comes down with a back issue that will sideline him most, if not all of the season. Day, Burdette and Simmons have been so good for us so far. Irvin and Jones are having great seasons too, other than that our hitting is sort of pedestrian. Lorenzo Davis is struggling. July- We went 17-8 in July despite Lew Burdette tweaking his knee and missing most of the month, the last thing we need is more pitching injuries. We had a good number of off days in July so we went with a 4 man rotation and got by. Our record is 68-38 and we own a 3.5 game lead on the Giants. August- At the end of August we're 85-50 and tied for 1st with the Giants, a real dog fight. Luke Easter broke his ankle in the middle of the month and will miss between 3-4 weeks. Campanella will move to 1st and longtime backup catcher Andy Seminick will take over behind the plate. With Held and Lasorda at the top of our pen we've really improved there. It'll be a dogfight for the pennant, that's for sure. September- A week into the month we're 1 game back and Curt Simmons is 6 days away from returning. We lost 2 out of 3 to the Giants with our top 3 starters going and fell 3 games back. Damn. Welp, a 5 game losing streak in the middle of a tight race is never a good thing and we finish the season 94-60 and lose the pennant to the 98-56 Giants. What can I say, we gave it our all. Lew Burdette and Leon Day both finished top 10 in ERA. Irvin had 183 hits, good for 7th. Willie Jones (26) and Ron Northey (24) led us in homers. We didn't have anyone score or knock in 100 runs. We managed to make $46,000 this year to only leave us $102,000 in debt, which we'll be spending the next couple of years trying to get out of. The Giants will take on the Red Sox in the world series. 1951 World Series The Giants, led by Sid Gordon & Duke Snider, rolled past the Red Sox in four games to claim the 1951 title. New Yorks staff held the Sox to 1 or fewer runs in 3 of the 4 games. |

1952 Offseason Our debt caused us to lose 1B Luke Easter, 2B Lorenzo Davis, RF Ron Northey, IF Danny Murtaugh and OF Dick Wakefield. So 3/8 of our starting lineup is gone. Willie Jones got bank in arbitration. Burdette, Simmons and Rotblatt all got small raises in arbitration. I'm implementing a house rule, I can only accept trades offered on the trading block, I can't go out and offer trades. Want to make this as difficult as possible. The question is, with more salary parred and more income expected to come in this upcoming season, do I keep what I have left in tact or gut the team. I feel like I'll be asking myself this question every year, heh. Monte Irvin and Roy Campanella have no trade clauses and wont approve trades to any team. I put Willie Jones on the trade block and get some intriguing offers. In the end I settle on Cincinnati's offer that includes a 23 year old power hitting left fielder named Jim Greengrass, A good 22 year old SS prospect named Roy McMillan, and a quality reliever by the name of Ed Blake. Not only was this the best offer talent wise, but money wise as well as only Blake at $4,500 this year is making any kind of money. We'll save about $55,000 with this deal. We switch McMillan to 2B and he'll likely get that job to start the year. So yeah, a much different looking team coming into the 52 season. We will give our best SP prospect Troy Herriage the 5th starter spot, our pitching should really solid. On offense it's a crapshoot. Campanella will move to 1B and longtime backup catcher Andy Seminick will take over behind the plate. McMillan and Koshorek at SS & 2B are very good defensively but likely wont hit much. Greengrass is the wild card, he hit 29 homers last year and if he can produce like that and continue to blossom we may be ok. We're $100,000 in debt but $100,000 under budget so we may be able to get out of debt by seasons end but even then we'll have to be super thrifty and we have a cavalcade of expiring contracts and arbitration eligible players. We'll see. Edit: Spec Shea signed with the Braves, Lorenzo Davis signed with the Red Sox, Luke Easter went to the Tigers and Ron Northey went to the Giants. 1952 Season April- A very pleasing 17-9 record to start the season, good for a 2 game lead on the Braves. Irvin is having his typical great season and Roy McMillan is doing a good job out of the 2 hole. Campanella is hitting .370 and Greengrass has clocked 9 homers and 33 RBI, which lead baseball. Our pitching has been tremendous save for rookie Troy Herriage. May- We end a down month 31-22 and a game behind the Giants. Lew Burdette will miss a month with a collarbone break, damnit. We get a very tempting offer from Detroit who is willing to give us power hitting Vic Wertz, in the prime of his career and locked in at a nice salary for 6 seasons. They want Day & Held though. Jesus. I'd be giving up on the season if I traded Day, but I'm gonna lose him anyway. And Held is the glue to our bullpen. I hate decisions like this. I don't think I'm winning this year. I do it. We're essentially trading a closer for a stud, power hitting OF/1B. Wertz is currently 2nd in baseball in hits and 3rd in RBI, he's legit. We move Dick Fowler from the pen to the starting rotation till Burdette is healthy. Ed Blake becomes the closer. The back end of the pen is very weak and the starting staff obviously takes a blow but the offense is really bolstered. Wertz & Greengrass in the heart of the order is going to be monster. Roy McMillan really tailed off in May. June- We finish the month 45-35 with a half game lead on the Giants. Man, the NL sucks this year. Greengrass and Wertz are tied for 3rd in RBI. You can see Irvins slight decline but he's still getting on at a .400 clip. We're a solid team right, hopefully getting Burdette back will push us over the top. We're slowly coming out the hole money wise. I'd really like to get out of debt before the season ends so we don't get gutted. Pittsburgh got Roberto Clement 1st in the draft and Al Kaline went 2nd to the Tigers. We took Hank Aaron with our 1st rounder. July- We're 60-46, 2.5 games behind the surging Reds. Curt Simmons missed a couple of weeks with a shoulder issue but he's back. August- We have a very strong August and finish it 80-55 with a 6 game lead on the Giants. Curt Simmons has a balky knee and might miss the rest of the season but barring a collapse it looks like we're going to win the pennant. And YAY, we're out of debt! September- We end the year 89-65 and win the pennant by 7 games over the Giants. The league was weak this year but I'll take it any way I can get it. We'll play the AL champ Yankees who went 93-61 and won the pennant by 6 games over the White Sox. Wertz & Greengrass tied for 2nd in the league with 30 homers each. Wertz also drove in 112 and Greengrass 108. Irvin went .324/24/56 and scored 122 runs for 3rd in the league. Lew Burdette was our stud this year as his 2.26 ERA is good for 1st in the league, we'll be relying on him heavily in the world series. Closer Ed Blake was also phenomonal, posting a 1.41 ERA over 63 innings. |
