Yánez Picks Up Best CL Batter Honors for April

Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 28-year-old Jesús Yánez put together a solid offensive month for Washington and was crowned April's top batter in the Continental League.

He batted .353 with 5 home runs, 14 RBIs and 19 runs scored.

It's official. BNN writers have voted Gary Berry of the Ann Arbor Wolverines the Republic League Batter of the Month award for April.

During the month he recorded a .338 average with 11 home runs, 17 RBIs and 18 runs scored.

Terriers Reliever Cops Pitching Award

"The kid had it all working last month," a veteran teammate told reporters. "He keeps up those kind of numbers, we might have to start inviting him out with us after the games."

Horace Strickland put together a very solid month to take home the Continental League's top pitching honor in April.

The 25-year-old reliever threw like a veteran. In 12 relief appearances he raked in 10 saves and 9 strikeouts in 12.2 innings as he put together his 1-0 record and 2.84 ERA.


Giuggioli Acclaimed Top Pitcher in April

Veteran Alonso Giuggioli put together quite a successful stretch in April for the Maricopa Rattlers, earning himself the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

Giuggioli racked up a 3-1 record in 5 starts, posting a 2.12 ERA over 34 innings and striking out 33.

CL Selects Rookie Star of the Month

A veritable toddler to the Continental League, José Carlos Soto just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for April.

Over the past month the 25-year-old left fielder for Washington hit .306 with 26 hits, 2 home runs and 7 runs batted in. He also logged 5 walks and compiled a .341 on-base percentage.

Paul Thompson is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Republic League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In April the Chicago hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .265 average with 22 hits, 8 home runs and 23 RBIs.

Martínez Captures CL Batter of Month Award

It's official. BNN writers have voted Miguel Martínez of the Oshawa Mullets the Continental League Batter of the Month award for May.

During the month he recorded a .298 average with 7 home runs, 24 RBIs and 25 runs scored.

Currently Martínez is hitting .295 and has collected 13 home runs, 37 RBIs and scored 37 times, while playing in 49 games.


Patenaude Takes Best Bat Award in May

Wilbur Patenaude earned May's Batter of the Month honors in the Republic League by reeling off a .439 average, going 50 for 114 with 4 home runs, 24 RBIs and 18 runs scored.

The soon-to-be free agent was hitting with great urgency in an effort to bolster his asking price in the Ann Arbor clubhouse and around the rest of the league.

In this current campaign Patenaude is hitting at a .385 clip with 9 home runs and 45 RBIs.

CL Selects López May's Best Pitcher

Fernando López has made fans throughout FOOL-X take notice over the past month with an exceptional 5-0 record. No pitcher in the Continental League threw better in May, garnering him the Pitcher of the Month award today.

In 6 starts López compiled a 1.28 ERA, putting up a 5-0 record, striking out 32 and tossing 42.1 innings.

This season López has registered 7 wins and 2 losses in 10 starts with a 1.64 ERA.


RL Top Pitcher for May Picked

León Lara has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in May and stole away with the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Beach Boys bullpen ace collected 9 saves and 15 strikeouts in 14.2 innings, holding the opposition to a .137 average and posting a 1.84 ERA and a 3-0 record.

This season in 24 relief appearances Lara has thrown 27 innings and collected 12 saves. His won-lost record is 5-2 with a 3.00 ERA.

Pollock Earns CL Rookie of Month

Nicholas Pollock's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Omaha center fielder has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In May he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .300 with 6 doubles, no triples and no home runs. Pollock also scored 17 times and drove in 8 runs.

So far in 2121 Pollock is batting .278 with no home runs, 11 RBIs and 29 runs scored. He has 57 hits in 205 at-bats and a .339 OBP.


May's Top RL Rookie Named

Youngster Paul Thompson emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Chicago deserved the honor, batting .265 with 6 home runs and 14 RBI. Is the month of May a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Thompson enjoy the limelight.

In his season totals Thompson has 14 home runs and a .265 batting average.

Yánez Wins CL's Best Bat Award

Jesús Yánez battered Continental League pitchers all June and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around FOOL-X long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 28-year-old Yánez told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 27 games, Yánez hit .373 with 9 home runs, 29 RBIs and scored 23 runs.

Yánez is batting at a .342 pace this season, picking up 96 hits in 281 at-bats with 20 home runs, 61 RBIs and 58 runs scored.


Red-Hot June Lands Ruíz Batting Prize in RL

León Ruíz really smoked the ball in June on his way to Batter of the Month honors in the Republic League.

The Portland center fielder hit .310 with 14 home runs, 31 RBIs and 30 runs scored to round out his great month.

Ruíz is presently batting .309 with 19 home runs, 62 runs scored and 62 RBIs. His OBP is .384.

June's Best CL Hurler is Martínez

In June, the elite pitcher in the Continental League was Juan Martínez, thanks to some great numbers coming out of the bullpen.

The Havana relief specialist posted a 3-0 mark and an ERA of 0.61 in 14.2 innings with 9 strikeouts and 9 saves in 9 save opportunities.

This year Martínez has 23 saves. In 33 relief appearances he has hurled 30.2 innings, fanned 33 and given up 6 walks with a 4-1 record. The Havana reliever has recorded a 1.76 ERA and allowed the opposition to hit .170 when he is in the game.


RL Picks June's Top Pitcher

Paul Springer's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 5-0 in June, the 28-year-old Waikiki hurler has been named Republic League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 40 in 40 innings, logged an ERA of 2.92 and allowed opponents to hit .268 against him.

This year Springer has a 9-4 mark in 16 starts with a 4.27 ERA. He has given up 108 hits in 103.1 innings, struck out 88 and issued 21 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .268 batting average against him.

#1 Continental League Newcomer Named

José Carlos Soto earned June's Rookie of the Month honors in the Continental League for last month's performance. The boyish Washington left fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Soto hit .327 with 5 home runs, 18 RBIs and 16 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

Soto is presently hitting at a .297 pace with 12 home runs, 39 RBIs and has scored 49 times.


Rookie Wiz Gets June Award in RL

Andrés Gonzáles earned the Republic League Rookie of the Month award for his fine play in June.

The 23-year-old Maricopa right fielder batted .391, smacked 2 home runs and drove in 6 runs. He also tagged 36 hits, scored 18 runs and picked up 4 walks for a .412 on-base percentage.

In his stats this season, Gonzáles has posted a batting average of .321 with 86 hits in 268 at-bats, 2 home runs and 17 RBIs. He has also scored 40 runs, walked 9 times and compiled a .341 OBP.

Manchester's Yamashita Chosen CL Batter of the Month

Kiyotaka Yamashita had quite a month with the bat in July and the Manchester center fielder was crowned Continental League Batter of the Month for his outstanding efforts.

To win the honor, he batted .324 with 23 hits, 5 home runs, 15 RBIs and 17 runs scored. He also drew 28 walks to post a .520 on-base percentage.

This season Yamashita is batting .314 with 49 RBIs, 64 runs scored and 18 home runs.


RL's #1 Batter Chosen

Miguel Guerra feasted on Republic League pitching in July and today he walked off with the Batter of the Month award.

The Las Vegas first baseman rapped out a .361 batting average while collecting 30 hits, 6 home runs, 22 RBIs and 21 runs scored.

During the current season Guerra is batting at a .319 clip with 23 home runs and 84 RBIs. He has played in 96 games and scored 66 times.

Alberta Starter July's Best Pitcher

Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Ricardo Alemán still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in July. The 32-year-old starter for Alberta was named Continental League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 4 wins and no losses with 36 strikeouts in his 5 starts, putting up a fine 1.96 ERA in 36.2 innings of work.

For this year Alemán has chalked up 11 wins and 5 losses in 21 starts with 127 strikeouts in 132.1 innings and a 3.06 ERA.


Republic League Premier Pitcher is Fernández

A standout performance in July earned Norberto Fernández the Pitcher of the Month Award in the Republic League. When his name was penciled in to start by the Maricopa skipper, it meant trouble for opposing teams. For the month the Rattlers star racked up 4 wins and no losses.

In 37 innings of work, Fernández limited opposing batters to 25 base hits and a .185 batting average. He notched 29 strikeouts, issued 12 walks and had a 1.95 ERA.

This season Fernández has compiled a 9-5 record with a 3.68 ERA in 21 starts.

Soto Voted July's Top CL Rookie

A rookie, José Carlos Soto is turning heads around the Continental League, especially since he just netted July's Rookie of the Month trophy.

The Washington left fielder batted .304 last month and collected 28 hits, 6 home runs, 12 RBIs and 22 runs scored.

This could be the first of many such awards if he continues this torrid hitting, but he's definitely put himself in a good position to claim the Kien-lung Teng Award later this year.

Batting .299 to date, Soto has 18 home runs and 51 RBIs.


Rookie Right Fielder Honored by RL

The Republic League made the official announcement today. The Rookie of the Month trophy went to Oscar Norton of Portland. He was voted the outstanding rookie in July.

Last month the 25-year-old Axemen right fielder played in 27 games and hit .270 with 6 doubles, 1 triple and 10 home runs. Norton also scored 16 times and drove in 24 runs.

A look at his current stats shows Norton with a .251 average, 20 home runs, 61 RBIs and 51 runs scored. He has played in 102 games.

The #1 hitter in the Continental League in August was Havana center fielder Ramón Cordero. He was selected the Batter of the Month.

Cordero starred with a .378 batting average, 13 home runs and 31 RBIs.

Thus far this year Cordero is hitting .304 with 33 home runs, 94 RBIs and 84 runs scored.

He stood out this month with a .385 batting average, 42 hits and 6 home runs, along with 19 RBIs and 30 runs scored.

This season Yap is batting .348 with 25 home runs.

Havana Starter Selected Best Pitcher

Pancho Miranda of the Havana Banana Sluggers outdistanced his peers on the mound this month. He fashioned a fine 4-0 won-lost mark and 0.52 ERA in 5 starts to get the Continental League Pitcher of the Month honors.

Miranda had a very impressive August, finishing with 30 strikeouts in 34.2 innings and holding opposing hitters to a .158 average.

This year Miranda has worked 153.2 innings with 124 strikeouts en route to a 10-7 record and a 3.46 ERA.


Nájera Nabs RL #1 Pitcher Award

The Republic League hitters didn't have a chance in August when the Portland Axemen manager wrote "Nájera" on the lineup card. Outing after outing, Carlos Nájera held teams in check and usually got a win.

He excelled with a 5-0 mark and 1.91 ERA in 5 starts. The talented Axemen star pitched 37.2 innings, fanned 29 and held opposing teams to a .182 average.

For his superb mound work Nájera was named the RL Pitcher of the Month by the baseball writers.

His record for the year is 11-7 in 25 starts and Nájera has a 3.52 ERA.

Alberta Second Baseman Rated Best Rookie

The Continental League made the official announcement today. The Rookie of the Month award went to Fernando Ojeda of Alberta. He was named the best rookie in August.

Last month the 26-year-old Renegades second baseman played in 28 games and hit .312 with 2 doubles, no triples and 1 home run. Ojeda also scored 6 times and drove in 13 runs.

So far this season Ojeda is hitting .271 with 3 home runs.


RL Spotlight Shines on Rookie Star

Jiménez CL Outstanding Batter of the Month

There's nothing like putting up good, solid numbers in the last year of your contract. Today António Jiménez helped his contract negotiations by nabbing September's Continental League Batter of the Month honors.

The Manchester catcher put together a .369 batting average with 11 home runs, 25 RBIs and 25 runs scored.

Someone will surely be opening up the vault this offseason if Jiménez continues at this brisk pace.

Jiménez has collected 148 hits for the Terriers this year, 26 of them home runs. He has also netted 79 RBIs and scored 89 runs while batting .272.


Horiuchi Crowned Batter of the Month in September

Eichiro Horiuchi let his bat do the talking in September and the Republic League heard him loud and clear. He made plenty of noise as he put together a .378 batting average and was named the top hitter of the month.

Horiuchi's month to remember saw him accumulate 42 hits, 8 home runs, 25 RBI, 22 runs, 5 walks and a .410 on-base percentage.

For the season Horiuchi has produced 197 hits in 650 at-bats for a .303 average with 46 home runs and gotten on base at a .328 clip.

Vázquez Chosen September's Best CL Hurler

September's top-rated pitcher was José Vázquez of Oshawa Mullets. He demoralized Continental League hitters in posting a 4-1 record and captured the Pitcher of the Month award.

In 6 starts, Vázquez limited opposing batters to a .224 average. He rang up 39 strikeouts in 37 innings of work, issued 15 walks, and crafted a 1.70 ERA.

This year Vázquez has a 16-5 record with a 2.55 ERA in 32 starts.


Republic League Announces September's Top Pitcher

The Pitcher of the Month has been chosen and the Republic League trophy went to Maricopa hurler, Andy McDermid.

During the month, McDermid was impressive with a 2.17 ERA and 5 wins and no losses. In 37.1 innings he struck out 45 and gave up 25 hits and 10 walks.

So far this year McDermid has a 15-8 record with a 3.50 ERA.

CL Names Washington's Torres Top Rookie

The premier Continental League rookie in September was Washington's second baseman António Torres.

Last month he played in 21 games and hit .452 with 1 double, 3 triples, and 1 home run. Torres also scored 13 times and drove in 9 runs.

So far this season Torres has hit .240 with 2 home runs, 24 RBIs and and scored 36 times.


RL Rookie Vote Goes to Pitcher

Andy McDermid is beginning to make a name for himself and he did it by posting a 5-0 record and a 2.17 ERA in September. For his spectacular mound performance last month he has been named BNN's Rookie of the Month in the Republic League.

The 21-year-old newcomer isn't at all intimidated by his lack of experience, at least not outwardly. In fact, by the way he has pitched beyond his years, you could easily mistake him for a veteran.

In 5 starts for the Rattlers McDermid has struck out 45 batters in 37.1 innings, holding opposing hitters to a batting average of .188 during his hot streak.

This season McDermid has a 15-8 record with a 3.50 ERA in 31 starts.

Okay, so I am not terribly surprised to not be in the playoffs. I felt I had too many wildcards and possible things that could go wrong, and I had a major hole at catcher.

But I didn't think I would fall to 69-93. And that was an improvement on my Pyth record, which suggests my Hibbies were even worse than there final crappy record.

Looks like it's back to the drawing board. Of course when you have been throwing out a solid rotation for two decades because of two 200 game winners who are now 37 and declining, it doesn't take Einstein to figure out the end is near as they fall apart.
