Fictional Character Draft - Signup Thread (Signups closed)

Is there any interest in doing a fictional character draft? I know we've done literary draft, but this would focus more on characters. The idea is hardly full formed but I was thinking about a similar format to some previous drafts where you have to fulfill two different categories, without repeating.

My idea is in rough form, but here's what I came up with.

Character Types:
Movie Character
Literary Character
Television Character
Play/Musical/Operatic (Live Performance) Character
Comic/Animated Character
Computer/Video Game Character
Hero
Villain
Female Character
Child Character

And a list of creators:
Pre-19th Century Creation
19th Century Creation
Pre-WWII 20th Century Creation (1900-1945)
Cold War Creation (1945-1990)
Modern Day Creation (1990-Present)
Female Creator
Multiple Person Creator
One Great Work Creator (Creator associated with only one work)

The second category still needs some work, but the idea is roughly that if I choose someone who Jim Gindin created as my Computer Game Modern Day Creation, no one else could choose a character by him, and I couldn't choose any other Computer Game or Modern Day characters.

If there's interest, and we can finish out the second category, I would be happy to run this.

I sat out the last draft to calm down my attitude on drafts.

I'd be in on this one.

Definitely seems to be interest, and would think we'd be looking for 10 people.

I'm suggesting as the last two creator categories:
Unknown/Anonymous Creator
Non-European/American Creator

Ideas would be welcome. Also, I think there will be a rule stating no religious figures, as I would not want to open that can of worms.

I think this is wise.

I'd almost say that you should do it for any character with questionable fiction/non-fiction origin, but that would be very tough to police.

Dola,

I have one concern. If each category combination can only be used once, how many Computer/Video Game Characters are going to be outside Cold War and Modern Day?

I actually see I think 7 creators that Computer/Video Game Characters can fit under. 5 of them are not time-period specific.

Since people will have to state the creator that the character comes from I'm not too concerned about this. To use an example I don't think will upset anyone's draft boards, Ronde and Tiki Barber have written a series of fictionalized children's books. If someone wanted to choose one of them from that series I don't see the issue with it. If you want to PM me an example you're thinking of who might cause debate I'd be happy to rethink this.

I agree with Wade as I too see multiple categories beyond the two time periods that a Computer/Video Game Character could fit in.

Sure, but if there are 10 people drafting, then the Computer/Video Game character needs to fit into 10 categories, right?

I think you're misunderstanding.

Look at Barkeep's Example:

Quote:
The second category still needs some work, but the idea is roughly that if I choose someone who Jim Gindin created as my Computer Game Modern Day Creation, no one else could choose a character by him, and I couldn't choose any other Computer Game or Modern Day characters.

The category combos are not limited by what someone else picks, just the specific creator.

So, two people couldn't pick a JG character. But two people could put a computer game character in modern day creation.

No. Multiple people can use the same Character Type/Creator Type combination but one person can't use either a Character Type or Creator Type twice.

So to use the historical person draft as an example, multiple people could do Renaissance (Era) Artists (Category).

The added restriction here is that a person may not use a work by the same creator. So if I choose a character by Maide Upauthor no one else can.

I'm always up for a good draft but have 2 questions.

Maybe it is because I haven't had my coffee, but I am nor wrapping my brain around the way the catergories interact. Obviously I have to have one player for each catergory, then each one of those has to come from the second catergory, and I can't use something from that one more than once?

Also, what schedule you looking at? I will be largely unavailable this weekend, as long as there is no weekend play I am in.

Ok, let's give an example.

We have a movie character "Bob" created by "John Smith" in 1982
We have a novel character "Fred" created by "John Smith" in 1995
We have a novel character "Joe" created by "Geoff Jones" in 1995
We have a movie character "Barney" created by "R. Summers" in 1995
We have a novel character "Jimmy" created by "Lenny Doe" in 1995
We have a movie character "George" created by "Doug Johnson" in 1982

Contestant 1 chooses Bob for his Movie Character, Cold War

Contestant 2 could NOT choose Fred, because John Smith has been used already. Everyone else is available. So let's say Contestant 2 chooses Joe for Novel Character, Modern

Contestant 2 now NOT choose Fred, because John Smith was taken. He also cannot take Barney because he already has a movie. He also cannot choose George because he is from the cold war era. He chooses Jimmy for novel character, modern.

Contestant 1 Only has George left because he already has his Modern, a novel, and John Smith has already been taken.

Let me find another way to put it as well:

1. You MUST pick 1 and only 1 of all of the character types.
2. You MUST pick 1 and only 1 of all of the creator types.
3. A SPECIFIC creator can only be selected once by anyone in the entire draft.

This is a very concise and accurate summary of my intent.

I think it provides lots of freedom, as many characters and creators can fit into multiple categories, while still promoting some strategic drafting.

If we can finish sign-ups today I'd love to start tomorrow and we could certainly take the weekend off/go slowly.

After I wrote the complicated example I thought of putting it this way.. figured I'd leave the example since I spent the time to do it .

This is one of the bad things about my job now, inability to read the board during the day.

If you are ok with working off my list most of the time, I'm interested.

No problem at all. I will admit I have a period during the day on Friday when I will be unavailable so if there's someone else who's not in the draft willing to work of people's lists that would be great. I'm going to go ahead and do the draw for picks so we can start first thing in the morning.
