[Monopoly] New Monopoly Piece - Vote to Remove an Old Piece

Rest in pieces: Hasbro to replace a classic Monopoly game token | Games Blog - Yahoo! Games

So they're replacing one of the "classic" Monopoly pieces. Honestly, I don't think I could name all 8 as I've played on sets with wooden pieces, special sets with a train and other ones so I never thought there was a defined set as I thought it changed from time to time anyway.

So which one should be removed?

And should there be a poll for which new one should be selected?

If you wanted something more "up with the times", why not a computer mouse? Then again, that may be anachronistic in 10 years. Similar with picking any particular single phone or tablet. Maybe a laptop?

I suspect Shoe and Wheelbarrow will be 3rd and 2nd most likely to be voted out but Iron will be gone.

As a note - there may be ways to eventually see how people voted here, so if you're leaning toward eliminating the top hat... do so at your own risk.

For the new one, I guess they're all ok. Nothing really jumps out at me. Hard to replace something iconic. None of them are bad, tho.

They have voting on FB for one you most wish to keep and one you want to add. Save the hat, add the cat.

The battleship was gone for a pretty long time, most setsin the 70s and 80s at least didn't have them. he cannon was another example of this I think. They'd appear in deluxe editions (like the one from the mid 70s with the spinning deed holder) that had ten pieces, but not the standard sets. The train...introduced first in the 50th anniversary set in the 80s maybe?

Voted battleship since (as cuervo noted) my set didn't have it anyway.

I used to always play as the battleship. I didn't even remember the dog, so I won't forget it if it's gone.

They can replace them all. I have well over 100 board games in my house, and Monopoly is not one of them new pieces or not.

Great marketing ploy though.

That's what I love about this. The free publicity Monopoly is getting for this is absolutely insane. There may be some grousing from some about changing pieces, but the hardcore Monopoly people know that they have changed pieces before, and all this does is create more collectibles. I imagine the set that includes all the old pieces and the proposed new pieces will sell like hotcakes.

Just toss the pieces from Clue in if you need more variety.

I also don't remember a battleship.

Exactly: it's brilliant marketing.

There was this great thread of "thought" in the comments in a Yahoo article:

"It's a cheap money grab that will never work so why mess with a good thing!"
(so why were you commenting?)
"These are an American institution, you can't change them."
(wait? you're going to waive aroud 'merica as a place to not innovate in a private company?)
"It's because it's a modern world and they can't think of a way to innovate!"
(you mean like using a social media platform to generate tons of free publicity for a superficial change to a 80 year old product and make gobs of sales?)

I don't know if the old ones will sell like hotcakes, but the new ones should garner some interest. And that's the challenge they have - how do you keep selling a game that has been around for nearly 80 years and which almost everybody already owns?

This is just one of their usual tricks that they pull out every now and then. Remember the money bag token? Was selected a similar way in the 90s and lasted until about five years ago. Every couple of years they get attention when local news stations have stories about Monopoly "getting rid of paper money!" No, they're not - they just came out with another electronic/credit card version.

Now, sometimes they do make what look to be longer-term changes. A couple of years ago Mediterranean and Baltic went from purple to brown, the title deeds changed shape, and the color of the denominations changed. This actually brought them more in-line with overseas versions of the game. Before that the dimensions of the boxes changed and the board had to fold in four rather than half (this happened across numerous games).

What I thought was one of the more brilliant promotions (well, I think the idea was but I don't know how visible it was) which I REALLY wish they'd bring back was with the Johnny Lightning brand of die-cast cars. Each space on the board was given a themed car, and each car came with a token version of that car. For a Monopoly collector like me, this was AWESOME.

For the most part, they've done as good a job as they can of keeping the product in the public's consciousness for being an 80 year old board game that most people have (as cuervo stated). Between marketing it in a gazillion forms on practically any electronic platform I can think of to partnering with McDonalds, they've kept the product "fresh".

I question the sanity of people who picked anything other than the thimble.
