Looking for advice - need a new vacuum cleaner
So we are in a new place and want to buy a new vacuum cleaner as the one we currently have is many (10?) years old.
I haven't really narrowed the field down at all (e.g. bag or bagless, etc.) so all suggestions are welcome. Though, I think Mrs. dzilla will nix anything robotic. I also haven't settled on a budget. Looking for suggestions and advise. |

Funny you mention this.. we had a Kenmore bag vacuum for the last 8 years and it was time to get a new one.
I did my due diligence and looked around and finally purchased this one about a week ago: Shark - Rotator Pro Complete Lift-Away Bagless Upright Vacuum - Champagne Model: NV552 It's like half the price of a dyson and had almost all excellent reviews. We really love it so far, I vacuumed our house with our old vac and then went over it with the Shark and the canister was full of pet hair and dirt. We were shocked at how much dirt and hair the Shark pulled up - we expected some since our old vac is so old, but not as much as it picked up. This one came with a bunch of accessories and lifts off the base so I can do the steps and stuff like ceiling fans and under the stove/refridge. I highly recommend it so far. |

No help to add, other than: every time I have to buy a new vacuum, I am flabbergasted by how much vacuum's cost.

Kenmore Progressive bagged for about $260ish is a good choice typically. A refurbed Dyson is a solid choice. I think the Kenmore's are just rebadged Panasonic vacuums, or at least were. Personally have no carpets in house but the people I know with Dyson's seem to enjoy them. But why spend $500ish if something half as expensive is good. Just avoid anything less than $130ish. There's a real solid middle class of vacuums.

I always scoffed at Dysons because of the price. Then we got one as a hand-me-down. Holy crap, they're amazing. Still not sure if I would buy one because they're just stupid expensive, but damn if they aren't about a billion times better than the economy models I've used all my life.

Just bought one today. Got a Hoover for $109 plus tax. As long as it picks up the dog hair I don't care.

Oreck fan here
Edit to add: We don't have any carpet in our home, only hardwood floors and linoleum. Oreck works great for the cracks and corners, etc. Would not work well on carpet I don't think. -- Last edited by corbes : 07-31-2014 at 10:03 PM. |

Have had a Dyson for ~4 years. It is still amazing. Had 2 dogs and a cat when I got it. Same experience as MizzouRah, vacuumed with old machine followed by the Dyson. The Dyson came away with a full bin of pet hair and gunk going over the same room the old vacuum had just done. Can't say enough about how great bagless is.

We have 2 Labs in the house and my wife thinks vacuuming is a nervous habit (2-3 x/day...seriously) We burned up several $100 varieties...a Dyson from Costco lasted about 9 months....
Fed up and frustrated I bought a top of the line shop vac (go ahead and laugh) It was like $150 and all of my existing hoses and attachments fit it. 3 years later she grumbles about the size of the thing but it does an amazing job of cleaning and lasts great. |

There's Dyson and then there's everything else. It's not even remotely close. I've found the pet focused model to be the best of the bunch.

Nice! Given that I do all the vacuuming it would be more like her birthday gift to me. I appreciate all the love you guys are giving Dyson, but I am having a hard time seeing the value in $600 vac versus a $300 vac (unless it vacuums while I am sitting on the couch). I will give them a look when I am at BBB which is where I will probably the vac since they have the 20% coupon. I am liking that Shark that was mentioned in the first post, but definitely still open to suggestions. Thanks for all the input so far. |

Dyson's are good I guess.. but for the half the price, people rave about the Shark, especially the one I purchased. We love it.. even cleaned under the stove and refrigerator tonight and filled up the canister.. it comes with all kinds of neat attachments.
All I know is it picks up twice what our old vacuum did and is easy to detach so I can do the kitchen floor, stairs, etc.. |

A friend started a mattress company several years ago in Charlotte, NC. His pricing structure was very simple 3 tiers Good Better Best All Below Queen->Queen->King 200-300-400 300-400-500 400-500-600 His $600 King was amazing a Tempur Pedic seeming doppelganer. He seemed to do REALLY well for a few years then his shop was shut down and I was confused. Turns out his company was bought out for 18x annual gross earnings. The rumor still maintains that he sold crap mattereses broke laws all kinds of stuff. He said in the King Top of the line mattress he had almost $50 in it. The company that bought him our was something like ABC Venture Capitol Group...research indicated it formed bought him and closed...articles of incorporation shwoed the company was formed by 5 people...2 of which were big shots in more popular bedding companies... |
