Oden had a pretty funny quote about how Miami's a good situation because there's not as much pressure for him to immediately star: “The cool thing about playing for the Heat is when you’re LeBron’s teammate and you screw up, nobody gets mad at you for missing a shot or turning the ball over — they get mad at LeBron for passing to you in the first place.”

Hilarious, and no doubt true.

Not sure where else to put this.

After 20+ years of absence,The Philippines booked a ticket to Spain for the FIBA Basketball World Championship by finishing second place in FIBA Asia 2013.

Here are highlights of the semifinal game against Korea, a team that has haunted our basketball dreams for so long. I attended the game with my friends. It was surreal and awesome to finaly break the Korean curse.

I have a Filipino playwright friend that's got to be ecstatic with this news. He's the most basketball crazy guy I know and all his energy is directed towards Filipino teams, especially Ateneo.

It's the national sport, as illogical as it sounds.

The best part of that vid is the final minutes of the game. The crescendo all the way to the end was awesome, it really did feel like the entire arena was just exploding with each made shot.

And the local announcers are awesome.

Yeah, probably 60-70% of the guys I ball with these days are Filipino. We've got a big Filipino population west of Sydney, and I'm out there most Saturdays shooting around. It's fun because, even at 6'1, I get to play PF/C rather than my usual PG/SG position.

The first NBA game in the Philippines in 33 years will be played tonight between the Houston Rockets and the Indiana Pacers in a preseason matchup.

For the most basketball-crazy country, this has been long overdue.

Flying out to the US next Tuesday for my first visit, and super excited about catching two live NBA games - IND@NOP and SAC@GSW - only two games that happened to be on the same night I was in an NBA town, but I like the Pacers and Warriors, so I'm happy... Even though I spent nearly $2k for the 4 seats!

The Rockets looked good. The Howard-Harden pick an roll will need some work, but it was devastating when successful. Howard in particular looked healthier than the past year.

I find it amusing that Deadspin attacks ESPN and Simmons so much when they've fallen into the same hole where they care more about pop culture and driving page views than actually producing good sports content. At least Simmons helped launch Grantland, which is the best place on the web for reading long-form sports journalism.

I also don't really shed may tears for Magic leaving. Just because a player is good at playing basketball doesn't mean he's good at talking about it, and Magic fell into that category imo.

As weird as it is seeing Bill Simmons becoming "the establishment" in sportswriting/sports entertainment and as awkward as he can sometimes be, I'm fine with this move. Magic was not adding anything to the show, and he's obviously not the type of guy to be very incisive towards current players.

I thought Doug Collins has done a pretty good job in the past, especially when it came to doing the Olympics for NBC (he clearly did his homework and was knowledgeable about international players outside the NBA). Hopefully he's old enough that it won't be one of those deals where he's angling for a future head coach opening and he feels free to tell it like it is.

I wonder how long he can stay healthy. Reports from TDS were that the team looked really good, but it's still pre-season.

This. I'm hoping it's because it's preseason but I'm sure that's not the case.

RIP Shumptop. It was roughly 1 year old. Shumptop is survived by Norris Cole's inferior flat-top and Nerlens Noel's baby top.

He also predicted Jordan would come back and play in the NBA this year.

He's bored.

so there´s at least 1 reason for me to actually root for the Heat in some small way. Great that he made it back, still hope it turns out in a Ilgauskas-type way.
Didn´t realize it´s been that long. Out for almost 4 years, crazy.

RIP 2013 offseason. I read through the entire thread this morning at work and I see why this thread's down to the second page and there's no 2013-14 regular season thread - we've got too many Celtics and Lakers fans here with nothing to be excited about :P

Anyway, Magic-Pacers, Heat-Bulls and Lakers-Clippers start off the season tonight. Buckle up.

I'm pumped for the Rockets season to start tomorrow. It looks like McHale has settled on the Howard as PF and Asik as C starting lineup that I was dreaming about when talk first started about Dwight coming to Houston. It also appears that Patrick Beverly will be starting at PG and Jeremy Lin will be first off the bench. I think the Rox have a chance to be very, very good this year if they can stay relatively healthy.

While I certainly get the logic behind the theory that a team should either be a top-five contender or actively tanking, I must say that I am happy that the Pelicans have decided to make a push this season. Sure, they are not going to win the championship.n1. But they have a player that they hope becomes a superstar in Davis. Isn't it better for him to be getting experience in close games against good teams? Isn't it good that he might get playoff experience, even as an 8 seed? And New Orleans is not really a basketball town. The fans will not keep coming to see a 20 win team. If you want to build up the fan base, you need to create a bandwagon effect to get people excited to come to the games--then hope that it becomes a habit.

As for the rest of the league, I think that Miami will three-peat. The winning streak last year showed me that they are mentally tough enough to deal with the grind, and they want to go down as one of the all-time teams.

I see the Clips coming out of the West. I think that OKC is a disappointment this season.

n1. Or, let's say that it is very very unlikely. I am reminded of the words of Moe Szyslak, "That sniper at the All-Star game was a blessing in disguise."

What do you mean? We get to see if Dennis Schroder does develop into Rondo 2.0... wait I mean that Greek Mystery guy... scratch that - it's a potentially dominant wing scorer in Shabazz Muhammad... oh wait no, we drafted a stretch 4 who will never be above-average defensively. At least we traded mid-level assets like Brandon Bass, Courtney Lee and Gerald Wallace so we could properly tank... or maybe we can wait until we're 15-25.

So yeah, I'll be watching Kansas, Duke, Kentucky, Arizona, and any random Australian national team games I can find.
