1911 FOOL-H Season Thread (Including Playoff Results)
I'll run the season first thing in the morning. I just got home not too long ago, have a lot to do before the morning and I'll be up early again, so...I'll do it then, lest I literally post the results with one eye open and in one post.

New York Left Fielder Best NL Rookie
Thursday, June 1st, 1911: Bill Kenworthy was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 24-year-old left fielder definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen May's National League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting. In 28 games Kenworthy batted .370 for New York, slapping 40 hits in 108 at-bats with 1 home run, drove in 22 runs and scored 26 times. Kenworthy is swinging at a .364 pace on the year with 2 home runs, 49 RBIs and 46 runs scored. He has played in 55 games. Red Smith Triumphs in AL Rookie Vote Thursday, June 1st, 1911: Red Smith's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young New York third baseman has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month. In May he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award. During the month he hit .413 with 8 doubles, no triples and no home runs. Smith also scored 22 times and drove in 17 runs. This season in 55 games, Smith has hit at a .394 clip with 87 hits, 1 home run, 36 RBIs and 41 runs scored. Rucker Wins Best NL Pitcher Thursday, June 1st, 1911: Nap Rucker's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 7-0 in May, the 26-year-old Cincinnati hurler has been named National League Pitcher of the Month. He fanned 37 in 76.2 innings, logged an ERA of 4.34 and allowed opponents to hit .265 against him. In 20 starts this season Rucker has fashioned a 9-5 record and a 4.64 ERA. |

June's Best NL Rookie Named
Saturday, July 1st, 1911: Youngster Jack Fournier emerged as the latest National League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Pittsburgh deserved the honor, batting .400 with 2 home runs and 16 RBI. Is the month of June a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Fournier enjoy the limelight. This season Fournier is hitting at a .363 pace with 6 home runs, 54 RBIs and has scored 52 times. Smith Wins Rookie of the Month Saturday, July 1st, 1911: Red Smith is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest American League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers. In June the New York hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .381 average with 43 hits, 1 home run and 23 RBIs. On the year Smith has hit .389 with 2 home runs, 59 RBIs and scored 65 runs. NL Top Pitcher Award for June to Dowling Saturday, July 1st, 1911: Pete Dowling of Boston had a tremendous June with a 7-1 mark and was chosen the Pitcher of the Month in the National League. Dowling restricted opposing hitters to 60 base hits and a .226 batting average. He rang up 33 strikeouts in 72 innings of work, surrendered 17 walks, and crafted a 2.63 ERA. Dowling has posted a 16-5 record for the year with a 4.18 ERA. Teams are hitting .255 against him and he has rung up 63 strikeouts in 200 innings. |

Kenworthy Top of His Class in August
Friday, September 1st, 1911: Bill Kenworthy was voted the top rookie in the National League for his solid performance last month. In August, the New York left fielder posted a .321 average while racking up 34 hits, 4 home runs and 21 RBIs. This year Kenworthy is batting .348 with 9 home runs and 99 RBIs. Top AL Rookie of the Month Named Friday, September 1st, 1911: The premier first-year player in the American League last month was Benny Kauff. Baltimore's center fielder put up some big-time numbers in August to haul in the Rookie of the Month Award. Kauff hit at a .376 clip while collecting 1 home run, 18 RBIs and scoring 29 runs in 30 games. This season Kauff is batting .347 with 203 hits, 6 home runs, 62 RBIs, 41 walks, .392 OBP and has scored 117 runs. He has played in 137 games. Dowling Gets August's Top Pitcher Trophy Friday, September 1st, 1911: When Pete Dowling takes the hill, he's a good bet to nail down the victory for the Boston Beaneaters. At least that's the way it was in May. He excelled with a 7-3 mark and 3.39 ERA in 10 starts. In 85 innings, he fanned 27 and walked 18. That's why he was honored today as the Pitcher of the Month by the National League. Checking out his stats for the season, Dowling has notched 27 wins and 10 losses in 45 starts, 3.91 ERA and struck out 108 batters in 345.1 innings. |

NL Awards Player of the Week
Monday, September 18th, 1911: Dave Callahan made quite a splash in the National League this past week. The Brooklyn Royal Giants left fielder drilled opposing pitchers for 11 hits in 24 at-bats to roll up a .458 batting average and the National League Player of the Week Award. He also contributed no home runs, 12 RBIs and 8 runs scored to his club's offensive attack. Callahan is currently batting .246 with 2 home runs, 84 RBIs and 69 runs scored. He has 138 hits in 560 at-bats. AL's Star Player Named Monday, September 18th, 1911: Ginger Beaumont showed showed his stuff this past week as the veteran rode a hot streak all the way to American League Player of the Week honors. The 35-year-old Yankees left fielder compiled a .457 average (16-35), 1 home run and 6 RBIs. Beaumont on the season is batting .340 with 2 home runs. His totals include 67 RBIs and 125 runs scored. He has played in 151 games. Redlegs Flick Smacks 5 Hits Sunday, September 17th, 1911: It seemed that Cincinnati right fielder Elmer Flick could do no wrong as the Redlegs kayoed the Beaneaters 3-0 today as he rapped out 5 hits in 5 at-bats. Boston pitchers couldn't get him out as Flick seemed to know which pitches they were throwing. "I think the Redlegs were stealing signs," growled one unhappy Boston fan. "I just felt good today. I saw the ball well and just wanted to make good contact and put the ball in play," said the jubilant Flick in the postgame press interview. E. Flick singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit an RBI triple in the 5th, singled in the 7th and hit an RBI single in the 9th. This year Flick has socked 246 hits in 662 at-bats for a .372 average with 16 home runs. He is getting on base at a .434 pace and his totals also include 94 RBIs and 137 runs scored. |

Flick Punishes NL Pitchers This Week
Monday, September 25th, 1911: His critics are starting to suggest that Cincinnati's Elmer Flick doesn't have much left, but the 35-year-old Flick prefers not to think that way. He cooked up a remarkable week in the last seven days, topping it off with the Player of the Week Award in the National League. The veteran right fielder for the Redlegs rolled to a .583 average (14-24) with no home runs and 4 RBIs. In 157 games this season Flick has compiled a .374 batting average with 256 hits and 16 home runs. He has also scored 143 times and knocked in 96 runs. Star of the Week Picked in AL Monday, September 25th, 1911: What's in a number? In baseball, just about everything. The numbers that Philadelphia's Tex Erwin put up last week were the envy of the league, as Erwin came away with American League Player of the Week honors. He belted out 9 hits in 21 at-bats, 1 home run and 7 RBIs last week as he posted his .429 batting average. For the season Erwin is batting .309 with 196 hits and 18 home runs. He has scored 106 times and batted in 86. Hahn Stops Pittsburgh Friday, September 22nd, 1911: Noodles Hahn of the New York Giants was really in the zone as he mowed down the Pittsburgh hitters 2-0 in a sterling mound performance. "I'm feeling good overall," he said. "I'm executing my pitches, I'm able to hit my spots and I'm getting outs in key situations." Hahn shut down the Pittsburgh Pirates, blanking them on 6 hits while registering no strikeouts and 1 walk. This year Hahn has fashioned a 13-16 mark, 4.62 ERA and pitched 263 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .324 against him and he has logged 74 strikeouts. |

I think I forgot to export after I made a few changes so I just exported now, but a little too late, as I just realized the season has already started.
Maybe I didn't forget to export though. Who knows.

My team had 10 more HR than any other team in the NL, and second only to the Athletics in all of FOOL-H. The odd thing about that is my park might just be the worst Home Run park in the entire league.
Zwilling hit 21 of his 28 home runs on the road. if we had a more offensive ballpark, he just might have broken 40! Honus Wagner had a pretty disappointing season, but doesn't appear to have really slipped much in the way of ratings. Now I just wonder if this is a sign to get ready of bad ratings drops in the offseason, or just a generic "offseason" for him. At the age of 37, I expect it might be more of the former than the latter unfortunately. |

Ty Cobb and Dutch Zwilling look like they might have a nice long career of fighting over the NL Hitter of the Year award. Cobb at 24 and Zwilling at 22 are arguably the best two players in all of FOOL-H

I don't think old time baseball handles VORP too well.....
My third pitcher George Mullin had a higher VORP from hitting than from pitching... Hitting: .679 OPS, 17 RBI Pitching: 22-18 3.78 ERA Hitting VORP = 10.2 Pitching VORP = -4.5 Or maybe this means that basic starting pitching is so easy to get in this league that a mediocre at best hitter is more valuable than an average pitcher? Or maybe I should just be happy that one of my pitchers had a higher OPS+ than my starting catcher (111 to 104)? Old time baseball is kind of tough to get my head wrapped around it. I think I've already altered my basic strategy for building my team 3 or 4 times since we started... |

I feel completely lost, especially with all the players that can do so much and how difficult it is to see that a guy can both hit and pitch in the OOTP interface.

Wow, yet another fade by my FOOL teams, at least this time I squeaked the playoff appearance.
Hoping to turn around another trend, I have fiddled with my team majorly for the playoffs. Usually I "go with what brung me", this time I cut down to effective pitchers only and tuned my strategies a bit. Good luck to the other playoff contenders.
