NL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Saturday, May 1st, 1915: Whitey Witt earned April's Rookie of the Month honors in the National League for last month's performance. The boyish Chicago shortstop might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level. Witt hit .324 with 2 home runs, 13 RBIs and 14 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award. American League Names Rookie of Month Saturday, May 1st, 1915: Braggo Roth was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 22-year-old center fielder definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen April's American League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting. In 25 games Roth batted .333 for Chicago, slapping 34 hits in 102 at-bats with 4 home runs, drove in 16 runs and scored 12 times. April's Pitcher of the Month Goes to Johnson Saturday, May 1st, 1915: Walter Johnson's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 5-0 in April, the 27-year-old New York hurler has been named National League Pitcher of the Month. He fanned 29 in 48.2 innings, logged an ERA of 3.14 and allowed opponents to hit .236 against him. |

Cicotte Earns AL Top Pitcher Trophy
Saturday, May 1st, 1915: Eddie Cicotte has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in April and stole away with the American League Pitcher of the Month award. The Athletics bullpen ace collected 10 saves and 5 strikeouts in 16.1 innings, holding the opposition to a .254 average and posting a 2.20 ERA and a 2-0 record. |

Wilson Gets AL Batter of the Month Trophy
Tuesday, June 1st, 1915: Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 31-year-old Chief Wilson put together a solid offensive month for New York and was crowned May's top batter in the American League. He batted .451 with 2 home runs, 35 RBIs and 32 runs scored. Posting a .382 batting average to date, Wilson has 4 home runs and 57 RBIs. Cincinnati Newcomer May's #1 Rookie Tuesday, June 1st, 1915: A veritable toddler to the National League, Hack Miller just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for May. Over the past month the 21-year-old center fielder for Cincinnati hit .368 with 28 hits, 4 home runs and 15 runs batted in. He also logged 4 walks and compiled a .400 on-base percentage. This year Miller has hit at a .331 pace and produced 33 RBIs, 6 home runs and scored 23 runs. May's Best Rookie Trophy Awarded Tuesday, June 1st, 1915: Youngster Ben Paschal emerged as the latest American League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Chicago deserved the honor, batting .351 with 4 home runs and 31 RBI. Is the month of May a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Paschal enjoy the limelight. So far this year, Paschal is batting .309 with 6 home runs and 43 RBIs. Scanlan Wins Best NL Pitcher Tuesday, June 1st, 1915: Veteran Doc Scanlan put together quite a successful stretch in May for the Chicago Cubs, earning himself the National League Pitcher of the Month award. Scanlan racked up a 4-0 record in 5 starts, posting a 3.08 ERA over 38 innings and striking out 16. His record for the year is 5-2 in 11 starts and Scanlan has a 4.09 ERA. |

Do we need to make some adjustments to the modifiers so our numbers aren't so crazy? Offense is fine, I guess, but I feel like things might be skewed a bit too high. Thoughts?

Cobb Hits .415
Friday, October 1st, 1915: Ty Cobb put up some astounding numbers in 1915. When the smoke cleared, he had put up a scorching .415 average for the season. Cobb, 28, racked up 295 hits, including 44 doubles, 9 triples and 6 homers. He also chipped in 127 RBIs and scored 147 times. "To hit .400, you have to block out a lot of stuff," said the Giants center fielder. "You can't let a slump get hold of you, you can't get tired of the press coverage, you have to be focused on every pitch. And you sometimes have to be a little lucky." Baltimore's Kauff Bats .414 Friday, October 1st, 1915: Benny Kauff of Baltimore has joined a mere handful of men to hit over .400 for a single season. The 25-year-old Orioles center fielder hit .414 in a colossal year at the plate, rapping out 271 hits, 43 doubles, 6 triples and 12 home runs. Baseball's latest member of the elite .400 club also drove in 101 runs and scored 147. "As much as I could, I tried to just forget about hitting .400 and just focus on each at-bat and trying to help my club," Kauff told BNN. "But as you guys know, there is no way to quietly hit .400." |

What, did Babe Ruth knock the league that far out of whack? I'm fine with the stats as-is. If things are a bit high, eh, they'll straighten out as we get to a more modern era.

I always thought that was a pitching dominated era, but I don't know if changing things will make it easier for people to get a grip on how to run their teams. I think we are all kind of winging it.

I don't know if the low stuff ratings for these pitchers hurt with the current pitching model. I also know that I have a hard time finding pitchers with decent individual pitch ratings. We're also used to favoring hitting over fielding as Alan mentioned in an earlier post, so it may well be we're starting guys that would not have played in that era due to poor defense. So if we favor offense over defense, that would skew the numbers. Lots of possible factors.

We start the season on fire, play fairly badly in the middle, and finish with a bang to sneak into the playoffs.
Ruth hits 57 homers this year. I like that he is who he's supposed to be!

Rube Waddell, THE Yankees mainstay of my entire tenure, has retired and entered the HoF (according to the game anyway). He has 309 career victories and 2541 Ks.
I'm not much the one for being sentimental about my fake baseball players (I literally could not identify one player on my FOOL team by name right now...), but Rube has been a favorite of mine. Especially the home town discounts he has taken over his last several contracts to stay a Yankee. For over a decade, I have plugged Rube in at #1 and sorted out the rest. He allowed me to trade Christie Matthewson (a very bad deal for the Yankees in retrospect). He has been part of 5, 4 and 3 man rotations. He was the man.
