*head explodes* Just 2 posts ago there was a rule and explaination about why not to just guess a series and how it's wrong. Not only that but we've also had a non-freebie instance already today, too. C'mon, guys. If it's been on the board for 2 hours, it's statistically improbable (not impossible but improbable) that someone is going to snipe it in the 5 minutes it would take to read the rules.

At the bottom, I try to keep it current with the ones that have been guessed. Obviously if I go afk and can't check on results, it won't be current but if it's there with a name (or N/A) next to it, it's off the board.

This is a good illustration of the new rule. Since you are guessing one that has already been answered correctly your guess didn't happen and you may guess again.

Silver 1 is the only GSB left on the board.

Ta da. And that's it for the GSB's for today.

Tomorrow's theme will be Atari, I think. At least half of these games I've never played but I've read about most and was just reading up on some others tomorrow. Problem- my perspective might be off since the Atari 2600 was released 2 years before I was born so the gold game may be really easy while a bronze game may be really hard.

I was thinking about what to do since this is a little time consuming to think up games and then dig up screens, particularly someplace that I feel confident in their correctness. So, starting next week, the game will be an every other day occurrence. The new sets will be release at some point on Mon/Tues, Wed/Thurs, and Fri/Sat.

Here are just some of the ideas I've been kicking around and filling in on my spreadsheet: Atari, Arcade, Genesis, SNES, Playstation, NES Baseball, SNES Sports, 90s Arcade, Meyer/Wright, and Arcade Fighting Games. Some of those should be showing up soon.

One freebie left for those of you who haven't been able to get into the game yet (Jeeber, I even saw you looking at this thread at one point). I'm not sure I'm going to have any freebies on the board tomorrow so might want to get in today, otherwise Monday/Tuesday will be the next set.

Darn I got here too late. All the ones I'm certain on are long gone.

Man that #2 sure does look familiar, but I can't place it for sure. Really thought it was Diablo, guess not though. So I guess I'll guess Diablo 2, but I'm really not sure.

Looks like I might be waiting for the next round of freebies, and classic PC gaming was supposed to be my strongpoint.

For a point of clarity, I never said it wasn't Diablo. I just said it didn't count as being answered since Wolfpack already had a freebie from the first day (the idea being it would be good if another person who hadn't answered could get into the game).

Hopefully we can get past these few opening glitches so that things run more smoothly.

Atari Classics

Today's Theme: Atari Classics

Here's a "stealth" one since it is technically Friday. This should give a better chance at some of the international and early morning crowd. But this one is a toughie and an oldie: Atari classics. Unfortunately, I wasn't alive when the Atari 2600 came out much less the 800 and 400, which some of these were for. So I've had to rely on gaming sites to give me some perspective as to the popularity and influence of some of these games so a bronze may prove to be the hardest one here- it's hard for me to guage. I have personally played the 3 bronzes with #2 being a personal favorite from after school daycare growing up. The silvers are supposedly classics according to a couple of places I was reading and the gold is, well, a flat out hard one, I think.

Also, since there's still a freebie from yesterday (#2) and due to the difficult content here (for instance, I didn't want to use Pac Man for Atari when it's really more of an arcade game), there will be no freebies today as I mentioned earlier. Monday/Tuesday will signal the return of the freebies with some SNES classics that I hope everyone can recognize. So, good luck- I'm heading to sleep. I won't be around to make any rules clarifications so hopefully things run smoothly.

Ok, so JeeberD is finally in and the curse of Freebie 2 is over. Also, the 5 guesses are all correct and the scores will be updated shortly. Bronze 3 is the only game left on the board.

I played a lot of Pitfall and Keystone Kapers after school so I knew those personally. Bronze 3 I played on PC but it was apparently on Atari before that, if my sources are to be believed. According to Gamespot, MULE (which I had heard of) and Star Raiders (which I had not) were classics so I put them on there. For the gold, I was just looking over some old Atari webpages and said "that's probably not a famous game but a famous license and if you squint really good, it looks like Spiderman".

For those looking for freebies, there will be a full compliment of at least 4 Monday as the theme will be SNES classics and there are a ton of them. Per capita, that must be the highest quality of any gaming system- sure, the SNES had some crap games but not nearly as many as the NES or PSX and they had so many great classic games.

Some of these just happened to be before my time. For instance, the SNES Classics next week I've filled up in about 5 minutes with game ideas and have spilled over to the next edition (in a couple of weeks) or the Playstation RPG category I filled up in about 30 seconds. This is scary- I've got about 12 weeks of ideas- unfortunately only about a third have games put to them right now.

This ends today's game- I'll updated both this and the Thursday game (which I forgot to update with Jeeber getting the final one) and then standings and games list. Here's a preview of what's to come in the next two weeks as I've got almost all of the games for the following categories: SNES Classics (1st Ed), Playstation Classics (1st Ed), NES Classics (3rd Ed), SNES Sports, Sid Meyer/Will Wright, and Nintendo RPGs. I was having a hard time with Arcade Classics so they got bumped to have a little more time to work on them. I wanted to make sure I had some freebie heavy categories next week so anyone who hadn't gotten into the game can get in next week.

SNES Classics

Today's Theme: SNES Classics

I think this was the easiest category for me to put together. Came up with all 10 games in maybe 1 minute (granted getting screens takes a while). Per capita, I think this is the best system ever. The NES and PSX might have had more games total but the SNES had nearly as many quality games with half the total released. It doesn't suffer nearly as bad of the "see a good game, look to the left, look to the right, and you'll see 1 good game and 7 pieces of crap". Don't get me wrong- there are still clunkers, just not as many.

Good mix of genres in these games and I've pretty much already filled up the slots for the second edition of this with even more good games. Some of the best games of all time are here and all 4 freebies are mentioned in "best console game of all time" and "best game in genre" discussions. Hopefully these won't go too quick (also, can everyone see the PNG freebie or are there people playing who can't see PNGs?)

This is the first one that has kindof gone as I've envisioned it with a gold and silver being the last 2 to be guessed. The gold is somewhat but not really rare (I have a copy but have only played it once) but notable. I'd love to share some memories about the freebies but they haven't been guessed yet so best to wait.

As for the guessed ones, I believe KI is the only one I don't own despite it possibly being used as a doorstop at used video game places because it is so prevalent. Never was really much for fighters- sure, when a good one like Soulcaliber comes along, I'll play quite a bit, but the genre as a whole doesn't so much for me.

Star Fox's 3rd route is absolutely brutal. Never beaten it, but I have beaten the Monarch Dodora; I'm not even sure I've made it to MacBeth because I've died a lot in Section Z. I figured if I had used a gameplay screen, it would have been a complete gimme. Pilotwings is a fun idea and both the SNES and 64 versions are good for some fun. Heck, Super Monkey Ball even stole some of their gameplay for their multiplayer games and those are really fun. I actually found a set of the Mario Paint mouse and mousepad so that's in my collection Lost Vikings is a fun puzzle game but I never played it when the system was out and, while I have a copy, haven't gone back to it. An early game by Blizzard, yes, that Blizzard.

The three new ones are right. Mario World was, indeed, a really good game. That said, I think it was less a huge step forward and masterpiece than SMB3 was. Then again, I only say that because SMB3 was so tremendously good and there was so much amazing stuff that it still baffles me to this day- it's like video game art (I mean, really, who the hell programs the mechanics for Kuribo's shoe and then just uses it for one level or the ability to p-wing fly under the grassy levels, etc). Back to Mario World, that was 8 of the ones you need to get the full 96 levels- real pain to find some of those (like the chocolate ones that have one path count twice so you have to find secret exits out of both). The second special level had to be the hardest in that game- you had to control balloon mario and dodge the entire level. Blue Yoshi- easily the best of the three.

I think one of my greatest gaming "sins" is that I've never played Super Metroid (mainly on the grounds that it's so damn expensive, even today). It's supposed to be one of the greatest games ever and I've never played it. Another freebie note: Whoops- looks like the picture for Freebie 1 is in another language Didn't notice that until now. In my mind, one of the two best console games of all time- I think the first paragraph should easily tell you the other.

Lastly, there was Battle Clash, the gold game. It was one of the few games released for the SNES Super Scope, essentially, the SNES equivalent of the NES light gun. It was a funky shoulder mounted thing with a scope and it never really caught on.
