FOFC - Manager Update

I continue to read and discover that my assumptions on starting pitchers was correct, Maddux tonight and Martinez tomorrow. Of course the Late 20s could change that, they have other arms they can go to like Smoltz, Eckersly, and Glavine, but I'm guessing they stick with their guns. What to do about tonight's game? I need to check with Howser to see how Treacy did at third during infield practice, I missed that yesterday. I was on a conference call with the team owner.

FOFC - Manager Update

I arrrive at the ballpark, head into my office. On my way, I stick my head into Howser's office and say, "Dick, come by my office in a minute, I got something to ask you."

"I'll be by in 5 minues."

"That'd be great, it'll give me time to dress out."

I head to my office and start putting on my uniform. I'm almost completely dressed out when Howser walks in.

"What's up Benton?" he asks.

As I tie my shoes I say, "I asked Treacy to take balls at third last night, how'd he do?"

Howser rolls his eyes, "Well he survived."

"That good?" I ask as I begin looking around for my hat.

"It wasn't pretty. I don't think he fielded anything cleanly. He's probably pretty black and blue this morning."

"So playing him at third isn't a good idea?"

"I wouldnt' recommend it unless we have the plague or something and he's all you got left."

I look up from my search and give him a quizical look.

"OK he's better than that, but as long as Palmer and Fouts are healthy, even if they aren't hitting you have to play one of them. If you put Treacy over their he could kill us defensively."

I nod, "That's what I wanted to know. I'm sorry to hear that, that would have given me a spot where Treacy could have stolen some at bats."

Still looking around, "Have you seen my hat?"

"I saw one on the table outside your office, did you leave it there last night?"

"I thought I left it on my desk," I say as I head that way. I look at the hat and sure enough it's mine. I put it on and say, "So who should we play at 3rd tonight?"

"I don't know. It's pretty much a toss up."

I start scratching my head, "I was thinking of giving Palmer another start, but Fouts can bat left against the right handed pitcher...." I stop talking.

Howser looks at me funny. "You ok," he querries?

I take my hat off, and smell the inside of it, I rub my head and feel a slighty greasy substance. "I think I know why my hat was out here.," I say as I quickly duck back into my office and head for my private bathroom.

Howser walks behind me starting to laugh, guessing at what just transpired. As he walks through my office door, he looks back down into the lockerroom and sees several relief pitchers high-fiving and laughing. He walks into the bathroom and sees me attempting to wash my forehead off with soap.

"Got something in your hat?" he asks with a huge smirk. "Guess some of the guys are bored."

I laugh, "I guess so, now get out, My head is on fire and I'm going to have to get in a shower to get all this mess off."

I arrived at the park early today just to take some extra BP. I think my swing feels really good right now, but as I peak at the lineup card I notice I'm on the bench again. I really don't mind all that much since we are winning. I think I need to go buy some more seat cushions since the splinters on the bench can be a pain to remove from my ass.

Wow, a ton of webgems to help me through the game. Thanks.

On the other hand, too many hits and too many walks for Mighty to be satisfied. May need to an off day stint on the side with the pitching coach to tune it up a bit, skip.

GAME 13 - Sunday, April 15th - Radio Broadcast

Checked swing by Collins
Called ball four
Bullock motions down to
the third base umpire
He gives the "safe" sign
with no hesitation
Eddie walks to lead it off

Collins watches Hunter as he
inches away from the base
It's a pitchout!
Bullock steps out...
Collins takes off!
Bullock pegs it down
He slipped on the throw
But he got it off...
It's way over the head
of shortstop, Nights...
Treacy takes it, however,
backing up the play...
Collins has himself an easy stolen base

Chance smacks a fly to right
Pflaggstettler is waiting on it
Pounds his mitt
Persimmon takes it in
One away in the top of the
1st for Dead Ball Era

Jackson lines a wicked line drive
to the left of first
Gonzalez stabs his glove out
He's got it in the webbing!
David looks surprised to get that one
Collins hurries back to second
And there's two away

Cobb hits one high to center
Tucker is racing after it...
He has a long way to go...
Still running...
Now he reaches out...
GOT IT!
Man, A. J. is a zebra for sure
out there in center
The runner races back to second
Owen Hunter holds Dead Ball Era
scoreless in the first inning

Tucker starts... but lays
off the pitch upstairs
Ball four, McGinnity walks him

Tucker takes his lead from first...
He's challenging McGinnity's pickoff move
McGinnity looks the runner back
He's off to the races!
The peg down...
It's too high

Chance needs to work on his
throwing technique
He almost fell throwing that

Nights chases the high fastball...

Hit to deep left center...

didn't help things any...
But, picture day is a great idea
and the FOFC fans loved it

Nice continued surge to start the season boys.

8-0 in one run ball games shows we're doing the little things right to come out on top.

Course, 8 one run games in the first 13 games of the season means we should start trying to win by more or our beloved skipper might not make it to the All-Star break

Baker hits a grounder into the hole
Gonzalez makes an incredible stop...
But he's in no position to make a throw
Score that a single

Baker is taking his lead from first
Slider, down and in...
Breaking on the pitch
There goes Baker for second
Hays fires it down...
Right on the money...
Baker is out by a mile

Wallace swings and misses
Strike three
Wallace didn't have a good
cut at that pitch
And that will do it for Dead Ball Era
FOFC wins 2 to 1
Williams gets credit for the win
Knowles notches the save
Walsh takes the loss
The hitting star for FOFC
was Stan Gunner
He was 1 for 1 with a homerun
And that wraps things up
So long from FOFC.

Dead Ball Era had a chance to come back in the 9th but Home Run Baker was gunned down trying to steal second, to get himself into scoring position. "I'm not sure why teams keep trying to run on us, especially in criticle situations. Don't they realize how good Bullock's and my arms are? FOFC - MANAGER UPDATE

I wake up and pack my suitcase. We are heading on the road for our first road trip. It's only a short one, but it will be interesting to see how we perform away from our comfort zone. This schedule is ridiculous, starting out with a 14 game home stand. I think we pay for it in July, where we are away from home almost the entire month (will need to pack extra underwear for that trip).

I head to the stadium and I'm one of the first ones there. I load my bags in the team bus and get on board. I start reading a book that I brought along for the trip. Half way through the second chapter, Sal flops down next to me.

"Hey Skip," he starts off. "Lou Scribe pulled me aside last night after the game. He would like to do a piece on our teams fast start and great pitching."

"OK," I respond. "You supposed to handle it?"

"I already gave him some information, but he wants some comments from you."

"So when am I supposed to speak with him?"

"He says he'll grab you while we are on the road."

"Odds are we'll stink it up while we are out here and all the works he's done so far will become irrelavent." I smirk.

Sal laughs, then he gets up and heads to his seat.

"Hey Sal," I get his attention once more, "You and your guys are doing a fantastic job."

"Thanks, but it's easy to do when you have tallent to work with. What's the old saying, You're only as good as your tools." He smiles.

towards Willie Wells
Wells scoops it and fires it to second...

The pitch is just inside
and Gibson holds up
Bullock points down at the

And barks at the home plate umpire
The ump points out at Babson

Appears to lose sight of it
Has it again...
And makes the catch in medium center
That ends the inning

Give Pflaggstettler a single on the play

Swung on and sliced down the line
Dihigo runs over
He's near the dugout steps
Reaches in...
The ball bounces into the dugout
. . . Potpie back in the box
And here comes the next pitch
Grounded towards the bag
Dandridge grabs it
Over to Leonard
Got him!
Score It: 5-3
One down for FOFC...
Dandridge calls time as
he comes to the mound
to have a word with the pitcher

I'm sure he wants Barnhill to bear down
And not worry about the runners

Swung on and rocked toward Ray Dandridge
He leaps in the air...
Just out of his reach!
The runners are on the move
The throw comes in to the plate...
No, it's cut off
Over to first, but Bullock
dives back in safely
He comes through with a hard shot
and FOFC scores two

Beats Bell for the out
With one down

Potpie yells something out to Fozborg
Sirr nods his head

Wells is down
That was way inside
No call yet...
Now the umpire motions Willie to first

Fozborg comes with his best heat...
And this time it's too much for Charleston

Oh has hit his 3rd homerun
for Japanese League
And right here in Negro League
I FOFC on top 8 to 3

Base hit to left for Gibson
Bill Madlock is waving Wells to third...
The throw is cut off...
That holds Gibson at first

Hard ground ball to second
Blade grabs it
Over to first
In time!
Score It: 4-3

Blade rips the curve to left-center...
Bell racing back to the fence...
He reaches for the drive...
Can't quite reach it!!...
Blade makes it easily into second
That's a double for Blade

Nights rips one on the ground
It's a 'daisy cutter' to Dandridge
Ray fields it cleanly
Looks Blade back to second
Now fires it over to first...
Easy out
Negro League I gets the first
out of the inning

A line drive...
But right at Martin Dihigo
He doesn't have to move to
catch the wicked liner
Blade scurries back to second
With two gone, FOFC ahead 8 to
3 in the top of the 9th

Pflaggstettler swings...
He hits it to deep left...
Charleston is at the fence...
This one is going... going.....

CAUGHT!!!
Oscar Charleston makes a great catch
at the fence!

Unbelievable!!!
The crowd is giving him
quite the applause
That retires the side...
Persimmon Pflaggstettler fails to come
Through in the clutch
That's something you won't see very often

Checked swing by Torriente
Called ball four
Bullock motions down to
the third base umpire
He gives the "safe" sign
with no hesitation
Cristobal walks to lead it off

Hit right back to Fozborg
Turns and throws to second for one
On to first and Dihigo is gone as well
That's two away

It's grounded past the mound
Blade races to his right
Nights to his left
Nights scoops it up
Throws on one bounce to Potpie...
Ray beats it out!

Dusty Baker will send up a pinch
hitter for Dave Barnhill
Yes, Jelly Gardner steps out of the dugout
He will be up there against Fozborg

Base hit to center for Gardner
Dandridge is being held at
second by Bill Madlock
Dandridge will stay at second

Base hit to left for Bell
Bill Madlock puts up the stop sign...
Runners hold.

Base hit to right for Wells
Dandridge scores
Bill Madlock plays it safe and
stops him at third...
Runners hold.

He rips a grounder to second
Taken by Blade
Over to first
In time!
Score It: 4-3
And that will do it for Negro League I
FOFC wins 8 to 4
Babson gets credit for the win
Rodney notches the save
Paige takes the loss
The hitting star for FOFC
was Billy Bullock
He was 3 for 4 with a homerun
He also knocked in 5 runs
And that wraps things up
So long from Negro League I.

NL Post WWII erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 8th inning when they tallied 5 runs on 3 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Eddie Mathews who silenced the crowd when he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 3rd of the season). NL Post WWII rapped out 8 hits for the night. The win was credited to Gaylord Perry(2-1) who went 1 inning allowing no runs. Early Wynn(0-3) was the loser. Cuellar(1-2) was very good in the win. He gave up just 3 hits and 5 walks in 8 innings lowering his ERA to 4.05. The left-handed Cuellar lost his chance for a no-hitter when Dick Lundy singled with one out in the 6th inning. Negro League II had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Japanese League managed 9 in their victory. The winning pitcher was Victor Starffin(1-0) who allowed 1 run in 2 innings. Keishi Suzuki gained credit for his 1st save. Old Timers made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. Pud Galvin(1-1) absorbed the loss in relief. 'When Mays is on like that it is a tough game to play, no doubt about it,' Frank Selee said. 'He always pitches well against us.' Walter Johnson(2-2) was charged with the loss. He allowed just 5 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings. NL Pre WWII now has a record of 11-3. Billy Bullock had a big day with his bat. He doubled which scored a run in the 4th inning, cracked a two-run shot (his 2nd of the season) in the 6th inning and slapped a one-base hit plating two runs in the 8th inning. Negro League I threatened in the 9th but FOFC was able to put down the rally. Babson(3-0) went 7 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory. James Rodney recorded his 1st save. Satchel Paige(2-1) was hit with the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 7 innings of work. Babson was humble when questioned about his performance, 'Well, I felt pretty confident in my pitches this afternoon. But, I had great support behind me and I just threw what was called. That was an extremely well called game!'

FOFC - Manager Update

I've already gotten so accustomed to my morning routine that I failed to notice the cover story on the Sports page today. I didn't notice it dealt with my team until I closed it after reading the synopsis of last nights games.

I look at the picture on the cover. It's a great shot of Babson throwing a pitch with Maglie in the backgroun on the top step of the dug out watching. There are inset pictures of Mighty and Nielsen as well.

Blistering
by Lou Scribe

The late Spring sunshine has been hot, and there are several red, sunburned faces around the Dynasty League lockerrooms to prove it. However, nothing is as hot as the FOFC All Stars and more specifically their pitching. The FOFC All Stars, proved durning the spring with a 12 and 8 record that they would be able to compete with the games greatest players ever, but there were still some reservations from the fans, players, and even the manager.

"I feel like our pitching is good enough to let us compete, but Spring training is just that - training. The stats we accumulated are thrown out and we start from scratch. We'll have to see how we do when the lights come on." Manager Benton Breeze commented at his press conference following the last Spring game.

So far (with the lights on) so good.

How's a 14 and 1 record sound? Pretty good right? Well that's only part of the story, and it doesn't truly capture the teams dominating pitching. If I were to tell you that the FOFCers have a team batting average of .269, which places them in the middle of the pack, have 15 home runs which is also middle of the pack, and have managed to score only 62 runs, the only teams that have scored less are the 6 and 9 Caribbeans, the 4 and 9 Post- Americans, and the 3 and 11 Japanese teams, you would probably guess the All Stars are around a .500 team.

Let's get a little more specific about the teams offense...Pflaggstettler is the only full time player hitting over .300, but he is way over that number currently sitting at .453. The Catcher platoon of Bullock and Hays are hitting a combine .333 with Bullock getting the most at bats so far and carrying an impressive .375 average. The rest of the regulars are under .300 and Gunner who isn't even a full-time starter leads the team in home runs with 3. To give you a bit of comparison, Jimmy Foxx leads the league in homeruns with 9 and it takes 5 to get on the short list leaderboard. Pflaggstettlers 12 RBI lead the team, but that won't put him on the list of league leaders either. Despite the rather vanilla offensive statistics the team has a 2.5 game lead in the National League. How is that possible you ask?

...it's the pitching stupid.

"We've really done well pitching," says team pitching coach Sal Maglie. "Coming into the season we really preached to our guys to pitch to spots, but to challenge hitters. We knew free passes would kill us. In this league you can't be giving teams baserunners, and so far so good."

The FOFCers have only issued 40 walks, second lowest in the league to the Old Timers. With the low number of walks and the great pitching the FOFCers are only allowing just over 1 baserunner an inning. The teams ERA is 2.43, almost an entire run better than the next closest team the Pre-Nationals who are at 3.35. The biggest reason the All Stars have a low ERA - try the top 3 pitchers in the rotation - Babson, Nielsen and Mighty. All 3 are in the top 7 lowest ERAs in all of baseball. The league leader is Cannonball Dick Redding at 1.44, but Mighty is second (1.57), Nielsen is 4th (1.85) and Babson is 7th (2.03). The two right handers at the end of the games Kronside and Sammy Knowles have combined to go 14 scoreless innings, striking out 14 and walking only 4.

"We've been doing so good that pitchers like Rodney and Fozborg are getting very little work, and these guys are good enough to start for team in this league," Maglie points out. "Our 5th starter is 2 and 0 with a 3.21 ERA and he's goine 7 innings in both games. Not bad."

All that is great, but it still doesn't give you the full affect of how dominating the FOFC pitchers have been. Let's try throwing out a few more numbers -

9 and 0 in 1 run games
1 and 0 in extra innings
In the 15 games played - 7 times they have held opponents to 0 or 1 run.
In 9 of the 15 games opponents have been held to 2 or less.

Now is the pitching coach Maglie smiling - absolutlely. "We have a 2.43 ERA and that is awesome in any league, but we've done it against hitters with last names of Ruth, Gehrig, Gibson, Charleston, DiMaggio, Cobb, Speaker...I could go on and on and on. I'm extremely proud of my staff."

What about the Manager Benton Breeze -

"We've pitched well and gotten timely hitting, and I'm thrilled by our 14 and 1 start, but the numbers as impressive as they appear are hidding some very unsettling facts." Benton explains, "We are 9 and 0 in 1 runs games, that means we are 1 bad pitch, or misplayed ball away from losing those games.
We've played 14 of our 15 games at home, and that is a huge advantage. Our park isn't as cavernous as the Dead Ballers, Old Timers or the Centurions, but it's designed to help our pitchers, and they've benefitted from that. We have also benefited from being healthy this season. Have you seen some of the names on the Injury Report. Wow."

And of course we get his typical response for this time of year...

"It's early and there is a bunch of baseball still to be played. I just hope we can continue to play this way."

His Robness would like to mention he is 3rd on the strikeout list....with only 3 games pitched to everyone else's 4.

Battters may begin trembling now.

GAME 16 - Wednesday, April 18th - Radio Broadcast

In the dirt
And Blade holds up
He draws the walk
Nice way to start out the inning

Swung on and lofted very high...
and deep...
Charleston starts back, turns...
He's at the fence...
And he pulls it in!
Williams gets the first out in the inning

Base hit to center for Tucker
Blade is racing towards third...
The throw is going to third...
Blade is safe at third!
And Tucker advances to second on the throw

Just inside with a fastball
Williams is visibly upset...
Gibson is quickly out to calm him down
Dihigo comes over as well
Blade on third, Tucker on second
and Pflaggstettler on first
They'll be loaded up for Jeeberoni Potpie

Potpie swings and hits a high fly to right
It is right along the line...
Torriente is over at the
fence... reaches...
It's going to be close...
Just out of the reach of Torriente
Foul ball into the seats
He would have had a chance
in most other parks
Only a smidgen of foul ground out
there at Black Diamond Pk
. . . Potpie back in the box
And here comes the next pitch
Potpie swings and lifts one toward left
Charleston drifts over slowly...
He is under it now...
And makes the easy catch...
Williams needs one more out
to get the Ones out of this jam

Billy Bullock swings
This one may be out of here...
Back, back, back...
GONE! A homerun into the seats in left
Bullock gets a hearty slap on the back
from bench coach Chuck Tanner
as he ducks into the All Stars' dugout

There's a fly ball to Turkey Stearnes
Stearnes circles under it...
This one would end the inning...
He makes the play
After one-half inning
It's FOFC 4, Ones coming up

Grounded back to the mound
Nielsen comes up with it
Tosses it to first and gets him
One away, two to go in the
bottom of the 1st

Dihigo swings on a ball in on his fists
It results in a pop up to short
Nights is under it...
A few steps to his right...
One hands it for the out
Dihigo looked bad on that pitch
And there's two away

It's a sinker, up in the strike zone
Charleston hits it deep into the alley
Pflaggstettler is back to
the warning track...
To the fence...
He leaps in the air...
Can't reach it!...
It's in for extra bases...
Almost a fine play by Persimmon
Pflaggstettler
Charleston is at second with
a stand-up double

Gibson rips one hard to center
A. J. Tucker is on his horse
as he retreats to the fence
He is looking up...
Will he have a chance???

And this ball is caught!
At the end of one inning,...
FOFC leads 4 to 0

Hard slider, paints the inside corner

FOFC - TEAM UPDATE

Heading back into the dugout I mumble in a joking manner, "Damn writers jinxing our pitchers."

Howser got the joke and smirked, but Sal took me seriously, "At least we still won."

"No thanks to your "Blistering" pitchers," chirps Bob Hazzle.

"Well it's about time your players starting pulling their weight," Sal barks back.

Howser cuts in before I can to calm things, "Now, now, we need to stop speaking to each other this way or we'll scare the children." After a pause he continues, "We won, that's all that matters. Sal that won't be the last time your pitchers have a bad outing, and Bob, get over the article. It was well written and timely. Problem with those types of articles is the streaks come to an end. We'll have to see if our ended tonight."

I cut in and change the subject, "Any idea how Gazelle is doing?"

"No, I don't think it's serious though. Probably a strained hamstring. Tay is checking him out, but we probably won't know anything for sure until tomorrow."

FOFC - Manager Update

I woke up feeling lousy the day after our back and forth battle with the Ones, so I turned off the alarm and slept most of the day. I got out of bed just in time to catch the team bus to the park. Once at the park, I retreated to the closet called the Visiting Manager's Office, where I dozed on and off. I felt so bad, I didn't even bother to pick up the paper and read the results of other games. I was finally awaken by Dick Hoswer saying, "Ben...you need to get up, it's time to exchange lineup cards."

FOFC - MANAGER UPDATE

Leaving the field after the game, I'm not feeling well, I'm disappointed in the loss and I'm real disappointed in the fact we've had 2 straight poor starts, so I grumble, "Damn writers, jinxing our pitchers." This time it's not so tounge in cheek.

I...I...I don't get it. What does it mean when the other team scores more than us?

On a bright note, I have a three game homer streak going.
