Jaguars' Qualifying

On paper this should be Team 99's tourney to lose. Or will there be an 8-8 team that will shock everyone?

1st round

David Garrard versus Mark Brunell.

Midway through the first Brunell hits Tavian Banks for a 59 yrd touchdown to take a 7-0 lead. After the first quarter Team 99 leads 7-0.

(5) 1997 vs. (4) 1998

Team 97 is on the board first midway through the first on a Natrone Means 8 yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead which is how the first quarter ends.

Early in the second Team 97 strikes again on an 88 yard punt return for a touchdown to take a 14-0 lead, could the route be on? With just under 2 minutes left in the half Team 98 gets on the board on a James Stewart 24 yard tun to make it 14-7. Great stuff! Surprised the '05 Colts didn't do better, I thought that was the best overall Colts team in recent history. The '09 was good as well.

Texans' Qualifying

At best a 9-7 gets in, could a 2-14 team pull off three wins here to make it to The Finals?

1st round

(8) 2005 vs. (1) 2009

David Carr versus Matt Schaub.

That team seemed to be 2-14 for a reason and Team 09 proved determined to make sure no upset would happen as they cruised to a 35-0 victory.

Matt Schaub was player of the game as he was 17 of 20 for 292 yards with 3 touchdowns, he did have 1 interception so just 2 of his passes actually hit the ground. Andre Johnson caught 7 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown.

(7) 2002 vs. (2) 2008

David Carr versus Matt Schaub. A second matchup between these two and Schaub's team is again a favorite (though being only an 8-8 team). Will the first ever Texans team pull off the upset?

That question is answered and no doubt is left as Team 08 trounces Team 02 by a 42-7 final.

Steve Slaton is the player of the game as he ran for 119 yards with 2 touchdowns. Andre Johnson has 7 receptions for 104 yards. Matt Schaub threw for 284 yards with 3 touchdowns.

(6) 2003 vs. (3) 2007

Davi Carr versus Matt Schaub part three.

Early in the first Team 03 strikes first as Carr hits Andre Johnson for a 60 yard touchdown to give them a 7-0 lead. The first quarter ends 7-0.

On the first play of the second quarter Team 03 extends their lead as Domanick Davis scores on a 5 yard run to give them a 14-0 lead. After a Kris Brown field goal makes it 14-3 as Team 07 gets on the board they narrow the gap further late in the quarter when Schaub hits Andre Johnson for an 18 yard touchdown. At the half Team 03 leasd 14-10.

After a scoreless 3rd quarter Team 03 gets a field goal on the 2nd play of the 4th quarter to take a 17-10 lead. They would then go on to score touchdown in each of teir next two drives to go up 31-10. Team 07 adds a late touchdown to make the score look a little better but Team 03 pulls the upset 31-17 as Carr gets his first victory.

Andre Johnson for Team 03 was the player of the game as he has 162 yards receiving with a touchdown. David Carr threw for 285 yards with 2 touchdowns.

(5) 2006 vs. (4) 2004

David Carr versus David Carr. Which of the teams will be his second to get to the team semis? This will be the first game in the competition in which both teams had a recor below .500.

Tem 04 scores first with a field goal in the first quarter to take a 3-0 lead which is how the quarter would end.

Early in the second Team 06 would tie the game 3-3 with a field goal of their own. With just over 2 minutes left in the half Ron Dayne would score for Team 06 on a 2 yard plunge to give them a 10-3 lead. Team 04 would narrow the gap with a few second left in the half with a field goal to make it 10-6 at the half.

In the third, Team 04 hits a field goal late in the quarter to get them to within 10-9. After the third quarter Team 06 leads 10-9.

After hitting an early field goal in the 4th, Team 06 would add another with just under 2 minutes left to take a 16-9 lead. Team 04 starts on their own 32 with 1:43 left. Davis for 2, out of bounds, 2nd and 8 at the 34. Davis up the middle for 14, add 5 more for a facemask, 1st down at the Team 06 47. Jonathon Wells for 3, out of bounds, 2nd and 7 at the 44. Carr to Jabbar Gaffney for 22, out of bounds, 1st down at the 22. Jarrod Baxter for no gain, 2nd and 10. Carr to Billy Miller for 13, 1st and goal at the 9. Incomplete pass, 2nd and goal at the 9. Davis loses 1 yard, 3rd and goal at the 10, timeout. Carr back, looking, fires to Gaffney in the endzone but overthrows him, 4th and goal. Last chance, Carr back, feels the pressure, steps up and throws to Miller who is wide open but he throws it out of his reach, they turn the ball over on downs and Team 06 runs the clock out for the 16-9 victory.

DeMeco Ryans who led the team in tackles is player of the game, this was a game with no real player of the game.

Meh, I probably would have swapped out the 1987 49ers with the 1998 team. Young, Owens, Rice, Hearst (coming off a 1,500 yard season), a top 3 defense, etc. They beat a Packer team in the playoffs that was every bit as good as the Super Bowl championship team of '96, only to lose to the Falcons after Hearst went down with what would ultimately be a career ending injury. Obviously our backup, Terry Kirby, was not up to the task.

God damn TO - and god damn Rice's fumble that wasn't called.

Early in the 1st Team 89 gets on the board first as Montana scrambles for a 2 yard score to give them a 7-0 lead. They would add a field goal to give them a 10-0 lead after the first quarter.

Nice to see Moon get to represent the Titans/Oilers. Very curious to see how the Seahawks bracket plays out. Hard to imagine any squad other than the SB team ending up representing them but any D led by Cortez Kennedy has a shot at an upset.

An entire boring round sees the favorites advance with a 27-0 victory. It looks like Seattle was deprived of seeing a good competition.

Figured it would come down to the 89 or 84 team. Completely dominant in every phase of the game. #1 across the board in practically every major statistical category.

Not terribly surprising to see the 67 Rams knock off the 01 version. The 67 team had the Fearsome Foursome up front, and the 01 Rams lacked the O Line the 99 team had.

1st round

(8) 1983 vs. (1) 2008

Neil Lomax versus Kurt Warner. Probably the closest records between a number 1 and 8 matchup. The 1 seed may not be the best team in the group but their Super Bowl appearance gives them the top seed.

After a scoreless first quarter Team 83 scores twice late in the second quarter to take a 14-0 lead. They would extend the lead to 24-3 after the 3rd and a late 4th quarter touchdown by Team 08 would give us the 24-10 final as Team 83 upsets the number one seed.

Ottis Anderson was the player of the game as he ran for 108 yards and had 52 yards receiving and a touchdown.

(7) 1982 vs. (2) 1975

Neil Lomax versus Jim Hart.

Team 82 jumps out to a 17-3 halftime lead on their way to a 24-10 victory of their own as Lomax advances another team.

Pat Tilley is the player of game as he had 110 yards receiving and 1 touchdown.

(6) 1984 vs. (3) 1976

Neil Lomax versus Jim Hart part two. Will Lomax go 3 for 3?

Team 76 continues the string of easy victories as they win 31-10 after taking a 21-3 lead into the half.

Jim Hart was the player of the game as he threw for 258 yards and 2 touchdowns. Ike Harris had 108 yards receiving and 1 touchdown.

(5) 2009 vs. (4) 1974

Kurt Warner versus Jim Hart. Will Warner lead the only remainign Arizona team to the second round of team qualifying or will the final four be made up of two Lomax teams and two Hart teams.

Warner and Team 09 shut out Team 74 by a 20-0 score.

Beanie Wells was the player of the game as he ran for 106 yards with 1 touchdown.

Sad that the '84 team lost in the first round, but all of those teams were so good that it's not that surprising. Disappointed that the rest of the NFC West was so boring...I wonder who the favorites would be going into the group play stage?

NFC East -
1992 Eagles
1975 Cowboys
1990 Giants
1991 Redskins

NFC North -
1985 Bears
1998 Vikings
1996 Packers
1993 Lions

NFC South -
1987 Saints
2002 Buccaneers
1973 Falcons
2005 Panthers

NFC West -
1989 49ers
2005 Seahawks
1999 Rams
1976 Cardinals

AFC East -
1972 Dolphins
2007 Patriots
1982 Jets
1999 Bills

AFC North -
1995 Steelers
1980 Browns

2000 Ravens

AFC South -

1999 Jaguars
1993 Oilers
2009 Texans

AFC West -
2009 Chargers
1967 Raiders
1998 Broncos
1969 Chiefs

By decade:

1960's - 3 Teams ('67 Raiders, '69 Chiefs, '67 Colts)
1970's - 4 Teams ('72 Dolphins, '76 Cardinals, '73 Falcons, '75 Cowboys)
1980's - 5 Teams ('80 Browns, '82 Jets, '89 49ers, '87 Saints, '85 Bears)
1990's - 12 Teams ('98 Broncos, '93 Oilers, '99 Jaguars, '95 Steelers, '99 Bills, '99 Rams, '93 Lions, '96 Packers, '98 Vikings, '91 Redskins, '90 Giants, '92 Eagles)
2000's - 8 Teams ('09 Chargers, '09 Texans, '00 Ravens, '09 Bengals, '07 Patriots, '05 Seahawks, '05 Panthers, '02 Buccaneers)

2009 (Chargers, Texans and Bengals) and 1999 (Jaguars, Bills, Rams) are the most represented years, with '67, '05 and '93 each having two representatives.

If I had to seed these teams...

1's: 1985 Bears, 1989 49ers, 1972 Dolphins, 1998 Broncos
2's: 1999 Rams, 2007 Patriots, 1990 Giants, 1991 Redskins
